Next order of business. Deliver 1st USMC Air Wing to Lunga to increase AV support. I have moved two Wildcat squadrons and one Dauntless to the now officially opened Henderson Field.

It appears the power of a USMC full division has been augemented or are the numbers different now? By my math the 1st Marine Div now has a base AV of 510

many of the land devices have been scrubbed as well as general OOB reviews of formations. This has resulted in some formations having more base AV than in stock.

Interesting to see this added detail. I assume we still can't control exactly what the bombarding ships choose to bombard.

As I recall, bases now have varying bombardment-vulnerability ratings? Is this info visible on the map?

Also, in stock, it's often seemed to me that CAs bombard better than BBs. Is this the case in AE?

It appears the power of a USMC full division has been augemented or are the numbers different now? By my math the 1st Marine Div now has a base AV of 510

Afaik it did in vanilla witp as well?

In WITP a USMC div had around 430 assault points, compared to a US inf div with around 330, so they derfinetely increased it.

Bombardment in general [Naval], has been greatly toned down. I have not noticed that CA's do better than BB's.....rather it would be more accurate to say that adding BB's to the mix doesn't exponentially increase the naval induced casualties. With the improved logistics, BB's in bombardments are also less attractive unless supported by a strong supply line. (They are fuel hogs)

New Guneau

No radical change noticed. Joe appears to be moving in supplies to the small base due east of Lae. (why he doesn't go straight to Lae is a mystery......its not preventing my air forces from harrassing him.) Hori Force remains a static air target. Wary of a backdoor attack, i've moved 30th Brigade back 40 miles to help defend Port Morosby. Milne Bay continues to dig in.

Lunga

1st USMC Air Wing (45 av support) convoy arrives off Lunga and begins to unload, heavily guarded by surface forces with Wildcat cover overhead. My carriers are lurking SW of the island this time, still just outside escorted range from Rabaul. I suspect Joe might be using Shortlands as an anchorage for BB ops but i have no solid Intel yet. Its a great temptation to send the carriers in range to attack but i'm wary of a one-two punch from his carriers + 11th Air Fleet. The latter taken out of the equation, I have the edge (which explains why there's been little to no sign of the IJN) He's probably waiting for Hiyo and Junyo to arrive.

Silly question for the day...if the max visibility is 1,000 yds, how is there action as the range increases? It looks like multiple ships were sunk beyond a range of 1,000 yds. Lucky shots into the night?

Ships on fire, maybe? Max visibility was when battle started..and I think ships on fire can be quite easy to engage during the night.

Once ships are sighted, combat can continue as they pull apart up to about three times the initial sighting range (more if radar present). This accounts for gunfire flashes, ability to maintain visual contact once established, increases wakes from ships at combat speed, and stuff like that.

Watchtower's 2nd major troop/personell convoy is a complete success. 1st USMC Air Wing is landed and more supplies unloaded. Henderson field is now well situated with lots of supply and av support. It now boasts two Wildcat and two SBD squadrons...enough force to make the waters around the area uncomfortable for the Japanese. To christien this new change, SBD's raid Shortlands in a long range operation and catch the Japanese napping. Minor units of course but still good for my morale and partially makes up for Joe's bombardment TF using my small resupply TF for target practice. I'm planning an even bigger followup.

NG remains quiet. Milne Bay and PM continue to dig in still further. If Joe decides to go for them instead he's going to find resistance level's higher than imagined (hopefully)

AP bombs? SBDs now carry AP bombs as default load? What do they drop on normal range, a 1000lb AP bomb?

edit: just noticed that your SBDs from the carriers dropped 500lb GP bombs, so is it a typo in the database that the SBDs from Lunga drop armor piercing bombs?

At default normal and extended ranges, the SBD carries 1000lb and 500lb "GP" bombs. Based on date and experience level, the former can switch a few to 1000lb AP bombs.

so it´s wrong in the database that those SBDs dropped 500lb AP bombs?

I think it's a typo in the report. To my knowledge there is no 500AP bomb in the database.

Withdrawing all forces back to Noumea for a short break to refuel and refit. Henderson is now taking up harrasement duties on Shortlands and Tass in lieu of the IJN being anywhere nearby. If I know the head honcho, he's probably busing building up his forces and logistics for a big pulse. Question is, in what direction? My own forces are in good shape and despite the Carriers roving around, my primary base has a decent reserve built up of 35,000 tons of supply and 30k of fuel.

Is it just me, or are the air-ground attacks causing less damage? Are your pilots getting fatiqued significantly? I would think so, running these missions almost everyday....
