Is it just me, or are the air-ground attacks causing less damage? Are your pilots getting fatiqued significantly? I would think so, running these missions almost everyday....

Looks about the same to me.

The fighter bombers tend to do less damage than the level bombers.

...then i guess it is just me...

I get bold and attempt a risky mid Solomons penetration with a small cruiser/DD task force. Everyone comes back fine and we disrupt the sleep of the Japanese based there.

Intel is still not giving me much but i'm betting on a move against Milne Bay or Port Morosby. Why? Everyone I playtest with seems drawn there like a magnet vs. the scenario's true target no matter the VP level. Must be a fear of Marines thing. (well in truth, they are far more formidable in firepower and experience vs. the mostly militia based squads of the Austrialians with the exception of 25th Brigade of the 7th Division.)

In anticipation of a possible move against NG, i continue to plan small reinforcements now that Lunga is supplied, secure and dug in (with an AV of no less than 650)

I have two HQ Corps which can be very beneficial in a fight that have arrived under Mac's SW Pac command, I US Corp and I Aussie Corp. Loading up the former for PM and the latter for MB. MacNik has recalled the Canberra, Australia and Hobart to join the light cruisers Leander and Perth. A request for DD support was granted by Nikmitz in Pearl harbor so half a dozen go with the Oz cruisers from Noumea which is busy refuelling my CV TF's. The op will take a few days given all the ships. Fuel drains to 25k tons just fueling back up the first. The 2nd will drain it even more but as long as i don't run around the map at full speed, i should be able to build back up fuel in time to replenish them again. The carriers will provide distant cover for the two x AP TF's that will deliver the HQ's to their destinations. I have also reinforced both bases with a couple more squadrons and have upgraded several B-17E groups to the new F model. This will reduce Luganaville's ability to harrass Tass for a couple days but the crews will appreciate the rest.

Fifth AF has arrived. It's tempting to ship it to PM to increase it's sortie potential since it is badly overstuffed at the moment. But i decided not to do so because of the airbases small size. I think the HQ will do a better job at Townsville with it's level 6 airbase where i have alot of level bombers available with a very long reach. (its also safer in case PM is attacked. Losing the valuable airHQ for SWPac would be bad)

Intel continues to give me a wealth of info. I definately know his target and thx to my sub screen, i know where his carriers are. The only question now is, exactly when he sets sail. I want to replenish the carriers and reposition them so i'm going to send them back to Noumea, mission mostly acomplished again. (252 troops remain to be unloaded of the I Oz Corp) The one remaining AP will split off and continue to unload, all others and the escorts bug out. I'd send more troops if i could....but alas, i can't this game. He might end up winning the land fight but i'll try to make sure he pays a heavy cost. If i can acomplish that Lunga is pretty much safe for the game.

Well, it appears to be starting. The classic air sweeps along with a surface probe. If I know Joe, he'll be coming at the target with every asset in his arsenal. I was hoping that he'd be a few more days (turns) before starting off allowing me a full time to refuel but alas.....I don't get to set the schedule.

Enterprise TF is fully refueled but the Sara group is at 50-75% It'll have to be enough. I'm tempted to rush in with a one two punch but the invasion is sure to be well covered. Since MB is not Lunga.....i may try a different tack here and simply seek a carrier battle first. Depending on how well that goes i may slip in some surface assets. either way, i'm mobilizing in full for the main event, including some last minute air transfers.

Someone may have already asked this in this thread or another, but I missed it.

What does "Base Administration" represent?

Is it based on airfield size? Nationality? Does it hinder repair/service rates? Or total aircraft that will fly even if operational?

Thanks in advance.

Chad

The base is overstacked. You can either overstack physically (too many aircraft) or administratively (too many air groups), and it affects how many aircraft can be launched per turn, how many aircraft will be destroyed and damaged in an attack, and how many aircraft can be repaired per turn.

It gets a little complicated, but administratively, you can operate 1 air group per size point of the base, plus 1 per hex of command radius for the best Air HQ within range. Air groups resting or training don't contribute to this administrative rating; only groups flying operational missions.

I am still a little confused, in your first paragraph you say that you can have too many aircraft, how do you determine what the limit is?

thanks

The hammer falls. My land airforces do poorly against the ultra concentrated Japanese, hitting nothing. Joe lands with a full Infantry regiment supported by several SNLF units. This could be a close one. Unfortunately my supply situation at MB is poor which might tip the difference. Otherwise i'd be more confident given i have four fort levels.

My plan is simple......my carriers will steam north and attempt to hit the invasion TF, more likely i'll meet carriers....in small one CV TF's. I'm holding back most of my heavy forces to screen the CV's in two x two CV TF formation. I'm sending in small intruder DD forces to try to hit the transports as well as Helena and her brood. The big Oz TF seen to the left of the map will draw off west flanking the battle. Depending on how well things go tomorrow they may charge in and try to further beat up the Japanese. I have reinforced PM with more planes. Its up to the carriers now.

1 air group

"The base is overstacked. You can either overstack physically (too many aircraft) or administratively (too many air groups), and it affects how many aircraft can be launched per turn, how many aircraft will be destroyed and damaged in an attack, and how many aircraft can be repaired per turn."

So even if airgroups have very low number of planes like for example split ones it still gets a penalty?

I'm not a dev, but its a good thing to penalize lots of small fragmented units on the same field. Everybody's a priority and needs first dibs. Therefore, no one is a priority and no one gets any dibs at all, because the supply and maintenance guys don't know who to give it to.

I screw up. In moving my carriers forward i figured Joe would move his carries south to cover his forces. Instead he maintains the same latitude with his invasion, and coupled with not setting my bombers to escort range....they attack the invasion force unescorted and meet LRCAP. 58 bombers are lost. ouch. Because of this, I figure a carrier clash now would be disadvantagious so i withdraw south. Ultimately ,we are talking MB here...not Guadalacanal......this is the base the Allies can best afford to lose and is the easiest Japanese target. As i said in the beginning synopsis of the scenario, the USN carriers are the key to Allied success.....losing them, even in damage, equates in most cases to losing the scenario.

I can't though.....let Joe get away with trying to invade without first having firmly established sea and air control.....so i send in the light forces even though i know some or maybe most will be hit or destroyed. The exception here is that i wont' risk major units such as my CA's and BB's. will not be banzai'd. 3 DD TF's and the Helena group will thus move in and attack the invasion force.

This turn Joe DOES move south....lol. Its too late though. My surface intruders hit his MB forces. Looks like he was being 'clever' here...i run into no less than 2 single ship TF's......and they pay the price. I only nab some shots at some more ships but it's enough to at least count as attrition. Naturally i pay the price as his carriers decimate the Helena group. Some unexpected revenge though....by pushing his carriers south, one single CV group runs into one of my intruder forces which proceeds to shoot up his Zuikaku group. way to go boys!!!!!!!!!

My subs get the groan award of the scenario......many hits.....all duds. the rest are misses....including two CV's. Oh how lucky Joe was this run out.

At least one part of my plan works perfectly.....the reinforcement of Milne Bay by the 7th Brigade + 1st Aus Corp HQ. His expected shock attack is slaughtered.....1:5 odds and 2000+ casualties for the Banzai'ing Japanese. Thx to Fifth AF, i have 20-30 B-17's....a near total dud vs. the ships, now hitting his troops there hard. Even if he succeeds in taking the base, they will continue to serve as target practice. Looks like his forces are retreating NE....possibly due to fuel. It may offer more opps to hit the invasion force

I am still a little confused, in your first paragraph you say that you can have too many aircraft, how do you determine what the limit is?

thanks

That's an exact number, depending on type (single-engined/multi-engined). I forget exactly how many, but it's in the manual.

pretty much looks like the Allied ships perform far better at night than they did in WITP. It´s exactly the other way around now it seems. In WITP the Japanese swept the floor with the US at night and now it´s the US that does so with the Japanese. Was radar that good in mid 42? This nearly looks like the all so mighty Allied air search radar coverage of the whole map of the Allied in WITP from 43 on with all it´s effects. Note: I´m not arguing against it, I´m just asking if it is senseless to engage Allied warships at night in AE like it is senseless to attack a base with 200 Allied fighthers at a base with radar in WITP.

And also B-17s now dropped 500lb AP bombs... if they are not in the database, how can a programme make a typo?

radar implementation in mid/late 42 was still a work in progress for the USN. As such it's impact on a battle could be marginalized or even minimalized. My personal viewpoint is that radar's impact in the game is a hidden factor in skewing results in the battle sets i've observed and is worth a followup.

The above should not be construed as meaning that all battles go in the USN's favor at night. Also bear in mind that surface combat contains a great deal of variability.
