And also B-17s now dropped 500lb AP bombs... if they are not in the database, how can a programme make a typo?

ok Castor....because i know this issue is SO important to you. I had another pair of eyes look at the database and it appears my Mk I eyeballs were faulty. There is a device in there with that name 500lb AP currently in the scenario. It's an alternate device to the 500lb GP same as with the 1000lb GP.

I think american advantage in night combat comes more from high DL than radar. You see: Japs are in hex with allied ground units, coastwatchers present, frequent airstrikes, naval search, ...
I see it as americans know perfectly positions of enemy forces, maneuvred accordingly against dark background (in a bay with 3 landsides not a big difficulty)...
Japs even didnt know american surface ships are in the area (except carriers)

thanks. So I assume the Allied are now able to also hurt Japanese CAs if they get the right die rolls and deploy AP bombs instead of 500lb GP bombs?

Well remember that even the GP's can "hurt" them even in non penetration. Fire damage leads to SYS....and weapon mount damage must be repaired at a shipyard. The AP version can clean penetrate most Japanese cruisers so yes....the threat from the air cannot be discounted as Joe found out to a small degree.

Joe's forces appear to be withdrawing and my Intel shows signs that the focus of the Japanese might be changing. I'm not done yet though. After withdrawing South, then West, i am reapproaching MB with my carriers and hoping to pick off a few more ships. I wil also commit my Oz cruiser force as well. A risk but all war is risk.

Yes but in Witp non penetrating hits seldom made big damage, hope that changed for AE. I remember playing Japan and my CA's getting plastered by a dozen 500lb GP's and nothing relevant happening, a fire here and there, and in next turn all was good and not even damage got to 10.

It is better in AE than in stock. I agree that taken to extremes non pen hits can produce some odd results in stock....but overall i've always liked the distinction between penetrating and non penetrating damage. Another factor that enhances non penetrating damage in AE is the presence of actual shipyards. Even if the overall damage (SYS) is light...if enough major damage factors are acrued along with weapon mount damage....you need a shipyard or repair ship to fix it. End result is the ship is out of action for a signifigant period of time.

OT....did you see the pics of the CA-20 from Italy? (Boeing Museum thread) I figured you'd get appreciate that speciman.

My plan pays off and some further revenge is extracted from the Japanse. Joe is either trying to reinforce or evacuate his troops after the failed Banzai attack on the unflappable Aussies of Milne Bay. He must have thought that my carriers had run south and kept on running. As such we got a full day's shot at a IJN surface elements. Looks like at least one Japanese CL and several DD's were hit and hit hard, producing still more casualties from the invasion force. Additionally, my considerable land based airforce......marginal in naval warfare, are racking up the points against the invaders. Even if Joe gets them off the peninsula, they are not going to be in fightable shape for a while. I'm happy with these results as it aptly demonstrates why in RL the Japanese were reluctant to send in the Hounds without first having established sea and air control. RL tends to always look "timid" in comparison to WitP due to player ability to micromanage with minimal response time.......but even with those factors accounted for, some RL lessons can still be realized with a little luck.

Harrassment raids against Shortlands have been restarted. According to my Intel......we hit several anchored ships in the harbor.

Lunga continues to dig in. I am shipping in even more supply thx to the opportunity presented to me by the Japanese preoccupation with NG. Tulagi also has received additional supplies.

Minor skirmishes today. A Japanese sub torpedoes one of my damaged transports while I take a couple days to harrass Shortlands again, as well as bomb the krap out of the invaders hugging their beachhead at Milne Bay. Fifth AF's B-17's at Townsville are really hammering them thx to the HQ being based there. Looking at the ship losses, we seem to be running mostly even....i've lost more merchants, matched my his sub losses. Nothing larger than a DD on his side so far though i hit a heavy and light cruiser for damage. I figure the CL is at least a wreck.

Milne Bay Despite the low supply situation, i've decided to stage a deliberate counter-attack to test the Japanese defenses. The Japanese have been hard hit the last week by airpower, including Oz based heavies......the intel reports show substantial results being incured. I've mobilized my primarily Aussie cruisers to lurk south of MB in case of Japanese reinforcement or retirement runs.

Guad 18th USN Seebees arrived. Sending them to Lunga to assist with earthworks and expanding the airfield....if it can be expanded before scenario end!

Noumea Carriers home for quick rest/refit and refueling. Fuel situation is tight. only 9k at the base, but i have a reserve of 10k in a replenishment TF. Its enough to counter any sudden Japanese thrust. Given Joe's tendancy for max ops, i'm betting his fuel situation is far more critical. Its a waiting game again.

2nd Marine division arrives. I can't utilize them though.

Milne Bay

Two day's worth of attacks compress the flagging Japanese beachhead with heavy losses on the Japanese side. First day's fighting saw tenacious resistance and many Oz casualties but on Day 2 signs that Japanese strength was ebbing could already be seen. I continue to blast the invaders from the air, giving them no respite.

Noumea

Fuel reserves drained dry but my forces are mostly riding at harbor with full tanks. I still have almost 10k in reserves in a replenishment TF, but obviously i need to be more conservative with throwing my navy around for the next couple weeks so as to allow shipments to Noumea from the US to build back up a decent fuel dump here.

The only major surface force i have active at the moment is a 4 cruiser Ozzie TF that is lurking South of embattled Milne Bay.

Milne Bay

Australian attacks continue to mop up at the invasion point. Reports from the front indicate that the entire Yokosuka 5th SNLF was wiped out in futile defensive battles as elements from the two Ozzie brigades continue inexorably to advance against the beachhead. Massive Japanese casualties are being reported. Oz casualties are becoming light indeed.

Milne Bay

The Japanese are now reported as "surrounded" The battle appears inevitable at this point. On the 2nd day of this round of attacks, Elements of the surrounded Japanese "banzai attacked" resulting in the largest reported destruction of squads yet seen.

Noumea

The pipeline now has the base back up to 8k of fuel. (6k in my replenishment TF for a total of 14k tons of fuel) My carriers continue to refit, and replace some of the bomber losses suffered during the long range debacle attack. INTEL spots Japanese shipping in Shortlands. I'm guessing Joe is trying to build an airfield there that will alllow "R-Area" force to use more than just seaplanes.

erm....well no. See, when the scenario was being formulated, not all of AE's features were yet enabled. So during this playtest i belatedly realized that my rear area HQ's, to which most of my LCU's are assigned........were set to "permanent restricted". This is a handy editor feature that allows scenario builders to prevent some units under a designated HQ from ever being released from a restricted HQ....hence limiting their deployment. During past playtests, this went undiscovered because the feature wasn't enabled yet. now...... In this case, 98% of all my LCU's are in this predicament and even though i have enough PP's to move a couple big regiments, i cant. Hence i have to work with what i have at Lunga and PM and MB.

Joe doesn't know this though....and yes, the boo boo has been corrected for future scenario play. I consider it a challenge to my skills as Admiral in Chief to see if i can finish the scenario (which at this point is halfway completed) with 1st USMC and supporting units holding Henderson. It really all comes down to air and sea control anyway....just like in real life. I still have four full size carriers and a host of airpower to defend. Should be fun......as Milne Bay proved to be. hopefully i can repeat my successful defense at whatever Joe's next target is. I hope it's Lunga because even handicapped.....i have 650+ AV sitting there undisrupted and undamaged because of zero harrasement at this point.

Milne Bay

The principle battle over the beachhead is now over as a large chunk of the Japanese invasion body is wiped out over the past two days. Only remenents, primarily from the 29th Infantry regiment, remain...having been pushed back into the jungle where they will continue to be reduced until any left decide to surrender. It appears that the Japanese lunge for Milne Bay is officially a defeat at this point....unless Joe-san is trying to lull me into a false sense of security.......pretty hard given the limited scope on Japanese ground assets in this scenario.

Noumea Fuel reserves are back up to 12K. The carriers have completed repairs and are fully operational. 5 damaged DD's and a sub are sent back to Pearl for repairs. 18th Seabees are on Lunga now and are helping build up the earthworks at rapid pace. Supply is generous at 25k. No interference from the Japanese have made this part easy.

Milne Bay

and then there was one. Japanese pocket is reduced to the survivors of the 29th Infantry regiment. It appears that the Japanese HQ has left the survivors to their fate. A costly defeat. 5 whole SNLF units and 1/3rd of a Japanese army division. Forces the Japanese could ill afford to lose if they wish to retake Lunga.

This is a handy editor feature that allows scenario builders to prevent some units under a designated HQ from ever being released from a restricted HQ....hence limiting their deployment

Thanks, and indeed a good feature.

I am told it may be due to some ships in the scenario being allocated too much ammo vs. the ship class designation. If there's time its an easy fix though i'm not sure how it occured as i didn't mess with the values.

Milne Bay

The last organized resistance collapses this turn. Few Japanese surrender. Estimates indicate the loss of up to four battalions worth of SNLF troops and an entire Infantry regiment of the Imperial Japanese army. Given the starting str values when the Australian counter-attack began, i suspect that Joe might have been able to "Express" some of the marooned troops out before my carriers shut his operations down, but even so, it still represents a tremendous bag of troops. The bonus of course was that Milne Bay was held in the process and at sea losses were roughly equal so this definately equates to an Allied victory. The troops at MB are pretty worn out now. Time for rest. Hopefully there will be no quick followup move from the Japanese. I'd be suprised if there was given that Joe essentially left the troops there to their fate. One never knows though.

The war's not over yet however. The lack of Japanese activity tells me Joe is refuelling and refitting...prepping for the next target. Intel has drawn a blank so far on the target......another stab at NG? Dare i say....Lunga? (the subject of the scenario?? ) naw....

Either way....I continue to dig and in Lunga's case ensure that there's plenty of supply. Don't want to have another repeat of the tenuous situation at MB.

INTEL finally comes through. Target = Lunga. I expect the codebreakers to reveal additional LCU's planning for Lunga, similar to how Milne Bay was revealed as the first target. Curiously, Joe also seems to have established a base at Gasmata. For what purpose i'm not sure unless it's to facilitate barge runs to NG.

Question now is, what do i do about it. I'm moving an ARTY unit to Lunga this turn, (fortunately assigned to an unrestricted Corps HQ). and have moved 3 PT groups to Lunga (6 x PT each). I have also received a nice air reinforcement.....the 90th BG. Four squadrons of B-24's. I'm making room at Port Morosby for three of them. Which target to attack?

Recalling most of my subs from NG duty to refuel and prep for a lunge at Lunga. Also recalling my surface TF.....i may have them pay a visit to Shortlands first. I'm getting bored.

I have a plan now. It's been staring me in the face for some time now but the confirmation that Lunga is now the target snapped it into focus. Since i can't move troops up from the rear area, i'll just have to do what was done historically, use Tulagi as my reinforcement pool. Only this time the entire 2nd Marines will be moved to Lunga. Tulagi is not really defensible this round anyway and it's loss wouldn't impact me nearly as much as losing the airfield on Lunga. (Even if Joe were to attempt to take it at the same time, if i hold Lunga, it becomes a virtual POW camp for whatever is landed there.

Mobilizing the fleet for this since 2nd Marines is too valuable a commodity to rely on stealth. I'm back up to just under 30k of fuel...and with my major ship's bunkers full, a short jaunt to Lunga is more than affordable. Six AP's with a cruiser escort will set sail with my two reformed carrier TF's providing distant cover. Lunga has 63 fighters available for CAP and of course there are the PT's as well. The Australia group will bombard Shortlands to keep Joe off balance. Will also throw in the 90th at Shortlands and see how much damage they can do. My intel shows that the Japanese have completed a level one airfield there. Not much use but still a concern unless it gets to level 2. If my carriers stay intact i can also choose to blast it from long range using them as well. It would put me just inside Rabaul's range though.
