Place in history: The 1-16 Rata (nickname meaning "rat") was the world's first single-winged fighter plane with retractable landing gear. It was not a particularly fast or nimble craft, but after its debut, the bi-winged linen-skinned fighter became a thing of the past. In 1927, Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin demanded a technically superior fighter for the Red Air Force. Designers Nikolai Polikarpov and Dmitri Grigorovich were ordered to create one "under state supervision," while in prison. The resulting I-16 was small, light, and could withstand tremendous amounts of damage while still remaining airworthy. After pilots ran out of ammunition, many rammed their enemies in mid-air.

This aircraft: Delivered to its air force on July 10, 1940, this Rata served on the Eastern Front during World War II and it was shot down by German fire. In July, 1991, its wreckage was discovered in Karelia, Russia, and was rebuilt at the same factory where it was originally manufactured. A number of the workers who restored the plane had worked on the original I-16 production line as children. This craft is one of only a few flying I-16s in existence

GF unit was amused by this plane......she kept calling it the Rat plane (not knowing that it actually was called such) due to it's diminutive size and fat fuslage. When asked about this plane I was tempted to tell her that this was the machine made famous by that daring crime fighter , "Ratman" who long before that "Batman" feller came out, made his mark on Gotham city. But i was in purse swinging range.

Some might be surpirsed, but this was the plane i was most interested in seeing...even trumping the famed Zero that i had never witnessed in the flesh. I never expected to see one, much less a flyable one. It was a real treat! I can't wait to see it fly.

According to one of our hosts, there are only two pilots in the world, one in the US, the other in Europe who are certified to fly this beast. The next display for her will be in Sept.

Place in history: The P-40 Tomahawk debuted at the start of WWII and was a modification of the older P-36 Hawk. Because of this heritage, the plane was relatively easy to produce and could be hurried into service. Its low cost kept the aircraft in production as a ground attack fighter long after other airplanes had technologically surpassed it. The P-40 is particularly notable for being the shark-mouthed choice of the famed Flying Tiger squadron. The P-40 did not have the glamorous reputation of other US fighters, like the P-51 Mustang; but the plane had its proponents, who cited its high-speed agility at lower altitudes and its ability to make tight turns. Overall, the P-40s excellence lay in its great dependability and lack of complexity.

This aircraft: While this fighter was manufactured in the United States, it never flew for American forces. It was purchased by the British and then given to the Soviet Union in September, 1941, under the Lend-Lease (armament-sharing) program. For nine months this airplane spent its combat career in the skies over the Karelian battle front in Russia, defending Murmansk against invading German forces. On September 27, 1942, the craft's the oil tank was punctured by enemy fire. Its pilot managed to glide the aircraft to a belly-landing near Murmansk, where it was abandoned. It is the world's only remaining P-40C in flying condition.

Another unique plane. Not as unique a the Yellow 10 but as the print said, the only example in the world of a P40C in flying condition. very cool
