Tanker(AO)

Yup. The funnel placement is a dead giveaway (and the deck armament is pretty conclusive, too).

Sy'mon says.

De ‘ting, fo’ sho’
Be an AO
De dinky stack
Shoved in de back
Mean she ain’t no T3
So what can she be

I’m guessing a T2-SE, Escambia class, built at Marinship, Sausalito, photo time late 1944, early 1945.

Oh, Brady, you nasty man! Remembered a couple T2-SEs got converted to fresh water distilling ships in late '44. This is probably one of those and you are sitting back laughing your head off! If so, very nicely done!

That would explain that weird oily Navy coffee

I’ve been wondering if she is not a repair ship, or some form of heavy lift ship. That is a very large gantry crane beside the funnel.

Pretty sure she's a T2-SE; they didn't build any other aux types on that design form. That's the Bay in the pic, and Marinship built T2-SEs, so could be a T2-SE-A2 Escambia class AO. But the Escambia class AOs didn't have an A-frame crane ahead of the after deck house, so I think Brady is pulling a fast one on us and this little beast is one of the T2-SE-A2s converted to water distilling ships. If so, it's either:
USS Pasig, AW-3, or
USS Abatan, AW-4

Darn. Beat me to it Shark7. Why do you think it's the Abatan?

Wow...a whole ship just for distilling

Forget about the Essex class carriers rolling off the line at 1 per month....when the Jap high command got wind of the US Navy converting entire ships to stills they had to know they were screwed. They should have contacted the Swiss Embassy the day they 1st heard about it.

To be honest, I wasn't sure exactly which one it was until I saw the picture. Still don't know which tug boat that is, which Brady is apparantly wanting guesses on still.

I dunno if we caught him at ALL of it, pal. I note that this tub was originally to be named the "Mission San Lorenzo."

Now, I don't kow the depths to which Brady's deviousness sinks these days, but when you consider the discussion in the P-38 thread that focused on the fictional Vonnegutian realm where Bokononism arose...

Tug/Firefighting boat. Just a multi-role vessel.
