Shaun,

One thing I have noticed is that I believe older players are under-valued in the trade AI. I want to give you some examples. I started a 2003 replay season as the Pirates with default settings using 1.76b. I will not use any names. All of these offers are at the beginning of the season after Spring Training I don't believe salaries are the issue since every team has plenty of money.

Hitter ratings are Contact/Power/Eye/Potential; pitchers rated Stuff/Velocity/Control/Potential.

1. 39 YO LF rated as 94/100/100/6 signed for 1 year at 23MM for 32 YO CF rated as 39/52/32/23 signed for 2 years at 900M. Other teams best CF rated 78/60/26/1 an next best LF is rated 50/50/52/13. Team has 164MM in available finances. There are 28 players on my team that the other team would be willing to trade for this player.

2. 35 YO 1B rated as 76/77/65/15 for 24 YO C rated at 6/5/12/27. No other 1B listed on team's roster.

3. Trade that same Catcher of a pitcher rated 81/65/100/5 and is 37 YO.

4. 31 YO 91/80/68/3 LF for 69/42/93/47 SP. 4 pitchers on other team rated higher than SP on both stuff and control, but would be 3rd lowest rated pitcher in terms of stuff. LF is rated 3rd of all LFs in Contact and 6th in Power. 2 LFs are rated higher on both. Basically trading the 3rd best LF in MLB for my #4 starting pitcher.

5. Could also trade that pitcher for 70/82/79/20 32 YO 1B or 30 YO RF rated 91/37/39/1.

6. 41 YO SP rated 81/57/92/11 for 2B rated 42/29/45/31. Current 2B rated 79/75/37/41 and signed for 3 years.

7. 29 YO SS rated 91/47/54/9 traded Pitcher rated at 73/48/95/9. After making trade pitcher is starter #4 for new team.

8. 34 YO RP 84/62/100/7 for 33 YO RP 81/49/63/18. My pitcher is more of a middle relief pitcher with endurance of 39 while the pitcher I'm acquiring is a closer with endurance of 8. After making trade my reliever becomes choice #2.

I guess my point is that if you want an older team it can be relatively easy. At that point stockpile younger pitchers in the draft because you can trade them for just about anything. Here is an example of a team I built.

I know names don't matter as much, but here is who I was able to acquire using 1:1 trades from the 2003 Pirates: Derek Jeter, Manny Ramirez, Greg Maddux, Curt Schilling, Jeff Bagwell, Brett Boone, Mariano Riveria, Trevor Hoffman and Sammy Sosa. I traded the following players: Pokey Reese, Joe Biemel, Humberto Cota, JJ Davis, Randall Simon, Adam Hyzdu, Josh Fogg and Pat Mahomes and Jeff Suppan.

My rebuilt team ended the season 95-67 and won the Wild Card. St. Louis had a great season and won 107 games. By 1 game I had the 3rd most wins in the league. Despite the age of my team I only had 1 major injury to Trevor Hoffman who missed 7 weeks. Sammy hit 48 HRs, Manny had 42 and Bagwell hit 30. I had the best offense and 9th best defense. In the playoffs Arizona upset St. Louis and I ended up winning the World Series in seven games over Cleveland.

The one problem with modern-era play is that the small-market teams (Pittsburgh, Milwaukee et al) have way too much money to play with. This needs to be fixed. I've suggested setting difficulty levels for finances, with the normal level cutting small-market teams' finances by 30-40%. A hard level would cut them by 50-60%.

KG,

I agree the financials are another issue that needs a little bit of focus.  However, my main point was not so much that I could afford such a team, but through trades those types of players were available for relatively lower value players in my eyes and thus the CPU is not valuing them correctly.  So I just finished the next offseason and the following players were not signed to free agent contracts:

1.  40 YO LF rated 95/100/100 6; OPS last year of 984 - 23 MM
2.  307 YO LF rated 87/67/67/1; OPS last year of 845 - 7.2MM
3.  38 YO RF rated 84/62/83/15; OPS last year of 983 - 6.2MM
4.  34 YO 1B rated 75/89/74/14; OPS of 892 - 23MM
5.  33 YO CF rated 78/70/55/19; OPS of 793 - 5.6MM

Now for some pitchers:

1.  37 YO CL rated 90/68/83/4 ERA 2.05 - 5.7MM
2.  39 YO SP rated 85/56/97/1 ERA 1.13 - 22.5MM
3.  42 YO SP rated 84/58/94/11 ERA 3.85- 23 MM
4.  41 YO SP rated 81/67/100/7 ERA 2.96 - 23 MM
5.  33 YO RP rated 78/58/90/15 ERA 3.53 - 4 MM

Every team has over 100MM in available finances except for mine so that shouldn't be the reason for not offering contracts to these players.
