Hello all. This is my first post on the Matrix boards. I was introduced to Forge of Freedom by a friend of mine known here as Kingmaker and have just started my first PBEM game against him, we're just on turn 9 with me as the US. Forgive the question if it appears too ignorant.

I'm a planner by training and nature, so when tackling the US economy I built myself a spreadsheet to better see my economy on a global scale. Naturally one of the formulas I built into this spreadsheet was one that shows how many buildings can be built in a specific city. My first read through the manual informed me that each mansion supports 4 buildings, including itself, and camps don't count against that number. Seemed straight forward. So if Albany had 2 Mansions she could support a total of 8 buildings, meaning 2 mansions plus 6 others.

My problem came about when I punched all the numbers into my spreadsheet and many cities showed to have more buildings in them than could be supported. For example, Albany showed supporting 10 buildings with 2 mansions. Checked the formula for error and that wasn't it. Checked to make sure camps weren't involved, and that wasn't it. So I assumed I must be mistaken about mansions counting towards the support number. Re-did the formula to take the mansions out of the equation and all the cities came into balance. Problem is, when my next turn came, many of those cities that should have had room to build in them did not, and that could only be if the mansions were counting against the total to support.

So, my questions are:

Do mansions count against the limit of 4 buildings per mansion?

If yes, how can I have a city with 10 buildings, but only 2 mansions and no camps?

If no, why can't I build more buildings in a city with 8 building comprised of 2 mansions and 6 others?

Thanks for your time.

Paul

Welcome and hello again. Mansions and plantations do not count towards the 4 buildings that each can support. Likewise camps are excluded. So your example with 10 buildings including 2 mansions and no camps is permissable and should show 8/8. The other one seems wrong though as it shouldn't have reached the limit with just 6 buildings and the two mansions. Which city/scenario is it? Not that the scenario should make any difference but I will have a look.

This might be in the "ReadMe" file -- did you check that, in addition to the manual?

I'm impressed that you've created a spreadsheet. Is Kingmaker really that tough to beat?

I ran a search check before replying but it didn't throw up anything. Not even the change with camps not counting which I thought had been a patch change. Maybe that was removed when the manual was corrected.

Thanks for the response Ironclad. The scenario we are playing is the Coming Fury (the normal one not the balanced economy one). As for which city it is, I have multiple cities that are in this situation. When I get my next turn I will provide a more detailed answer to that part of the question.

I confess I did not check the readme file, but it seems Ironclad did give it a once over.

As for Kingmaker, although I have known him for a while, we have never played as my area of interest and his never intersected. However when he started talking about FoF 6 months ago he got my attention and when the new patch came out I decided it was time to try it out. It remains to be seen how hard he is to beat, but as he does have head start on the learning curve he will certainly make less mistakes than I (who for example made the intuitive leap that he needed to build shipyards on his river cities to make gunboats, only to realize much later that he could strangely build them in cities without shipyards).

It's been so long that it's hard to remember, but we probably permitted gunboats to be built in any city because many gunboats were civilian vessels converted for military use by sticking a gun on top. That's how I'd rationalize it, at any rate!

I pleased, and embarrassed, to report that the only problem with the buildings ratio was in my formula. I failed to allow for buildings under construction which is why (as Union) I had so many out of balance equations since in 1861 I had construction going on every where.

Would be nice to have a copy of that spreadsheet. I like running things that well.

It's still very much a work in progress, but when I have it done the way I want it, I will probably offer it for download at The Blitz.

You might also want to give it to Brett Schulte, since at his blog (http://www.brettschulte.net/CWBlog/) he keeps a page devoted to FOF mods.
