Well I'd never seen it and had no idea that patrol planes would fight each other. I assumed the nature of their mission would prohibit attacking enemy planes.

Then again when playing the allies in the early months the B-17 does seem to be the only air to air weapon capable of taking on a Zero one to one, so I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that they can take on a flying boat. Did Catalinas fight other flying boats too?

Thanks for posting.

Would be pretty hard to rival the 2 June 1943 when a Shorts Sunderland over the Bay of Biscay fought off eight Ju-88s, shooting down several and reportedly only two of the Ju-88s returned to base (damaged as well)

Dutch seaplanes fought Japanese seaplanes and bombers pretty often in the DEI, apparently. Lot's of kill claims on both sides, few actual lost.

And what is in Luftwaffe records about that day? It looks a bit like... overclaiming...

Actually it was Luftwaffe that recorded only two returning

It was quite common to have skirmishes between planes on patrol for both sides. While it is usefull to "know", it is also important to deny enemy his "knowlidge". Depends on your mission priority and friendly forces in the area. If you are on submarine patrol over convoy and enemy scout shows up - will you continue to look for subs or drive the snooper out of contact? Or when you are on submarine patrol over area where your Hunter-Killer group is hunting what you find - and enemy scout shows up? Will you look for targets or protect your H-K group?...
Catalinas were not that hot for patrol vs patrol fights, but B-17s and B-24s with their many machineguns surely were capable to take on anything slower.

Well there was a Fiat RS-14 floatplane in Med that destroyed two Spitfires. One was hit and veered to the other one.

USN patrol planes routinely fought their IJN/IJA counterparts. Several PB4Y crews qualified as "Aces".

http://www.history.navy.mil/avh-vol2/Appen4.pdf

(See the link...hopefully it shows air-to-air victories by type of USN patrol type aircraft...same records has types of IJN/IJA aircraft claimed, dates, locations, etc.

There were several battles between Fw 200 Condors and Allied long range patrol aircraft over the Atlantic. For example, the one and only Fw 200 C-5/U1 force landed in Spain after a tussle with a B-24D of the 480 ASG on 13 August 1943.

While the battles the British fight may differ in the widest possible ways, they invariably have two common characteristics – they are always fought uphill and always at the junction of two or more map sheets.

That also sounds incredible Obviously the secret is in excellent gunners... Too bad that such duels are impossible in WITP/AE...
