Just wanted to state that the 16 members of the XIBL and myself as commissioner are very disappointed to see the multiplayer functionality disappear from future upgrades. Shaun you are mistaken when you state "nobody was using it" in the release notes for 1.77. I know we might not be the majority of users, but there are at least 17 people out there who use the online MP functionality on a regular basis and find that it has worked flawlessly for us for 14 seasons of gameplay. We really hoped that Puresim was going to be the successor to BBPro when it came to the engine of choice for online career-oriented baseball leagues. But, alas, it appears that will not happen unless there is a change of heart. I know you need to prioritize what you can do with the game code and I understand your reasoning behind the change, but please just think about it as you move forward.

Doesn't anyone still think online leagues are a great way to get new people interested in the game...especially now that it is freeware? Not all online leagues have to be fictional either. I've seen enough people on here post about their solo historical leagues that I can't believe no one ever got a bunch of them together to play in an online MP league using real players.

Don't you guys ever get tired of beating up on the computer?

Touche! Maybe that wasn't the best choice of words. I didn't mean that playing against the AI was not challenging, just that there is a total different feel to playing against other humans. A feel that is definately worth giving a try if you like the career-based GM aspect of Puresim.

Your best bet is to petition Shaun for reinstating the MP option. However, you guys are definitely in the minority as far as play-styles are concerned. IF we had the ability to play head-to-head, I'd love being in an MP league. Simply simming out the games in that format holds no appeal to me.

Yea sorry about that, it was a difficult decision, but there were areas where it was really dragging the code complexity into a nearly unmaintainable state. It just never really caught on in the community either, even though I was quite proud of how seamlessly it was implemented from a front end perspective.

I have always loved the idea of multiplayer, so this doesn't mean I won't embrace a new implementation of MP some day, it was just a prioritization, focus and future proofing decision.

It's a bummer that such a great league will not be able to use v1.77 and beyond. I hope you guys understand this was not a snap decision.

Shaun

Very glad to hear this Shaun. I joined the XIBL league this past month and I have to tell you I am having a blast against other human opponents. It is a very different challenge indeed! I simply had the urge to try something new...something different...and MP has really filled the bill! I only regret that I didn't join the league sooner. If you haven't tried a MP league yet, I would encourage you to try it. It really is a different PureSim experience.

Thanks for the response, Shaun. I hope that you will be able to implement a cleaner MP environment sometime in the future. If you ever need people to help with ideas on how to improve the MP experience or test things you are working on please let me know. I'm sure many of the guys in our league would love to help out.

The one thing I am worried about moving forward is whether to upgrade the league to one of the stable freeware versions or not. I was going to wait until a good solid, bug-free version was released (that worked out the various things you keep addressing in each release) before making an upgrade. But, now we can't be choosy about it. Which of the freeware versions would you recommend if we did want to upgrade? Is there anything critically wrong in 1.76 that you are working on that we would be stuck with since we can't upgrade any further?

I'm fine staying with the 1.51 version for the league because it has really worked flawlessly for us and we've developed great stats from the XML, but I'm worried about future new owners who won't be able to use the freeware version to play in our league. As far as I can tell the only way to load the 1.51 version is with a valid serial number and freeware versions don't use one.

I'm sorry to hear that aspect of the game won't be supported in the new versions! I was always very much in favor of online leagues and think they would grow this community!!

Playing live online vs another human is pretty much standard now with games like Action, Strat, DMB, SAT, Replay and others with this capability built in. I don't pretend to have any idea how hard this must be to program but again many of the major replay style games have it now. Heck, I had no idea PureSim even had an online league still going and active?? With all the transitions and on and off again things that have happened to PureSim I think the lack of interest was due to so many changes and ups and downs over the years, and a lack of publicity, not a lack of interest...

Shaun, I think this would help the community to grow and would be very well received since the game is now free.

As Chairman of Total Sports World, an online league community committed to games such as this, we were terribly disappointed to hear this decision was made, as we had just begun conversation this week on expanding our Baseball lineup beyond just usage of Out of the Park Baseball. In fact, I had one of my younger Commissioners ask me if I thought PureSim would be good for his online league concept.

For those who haven't been to our website, www.totalsportsworld.net, TSW averages over 7,000 unique visitors with over 2.4 million hits per month. There are currently 11 member leagues that are part of TSW, and I am hoping to expand this to new product lines, therefore expanding our exposure (I know dneely has tried a league of ours before).

Shaun, if you ever reconsider, feel free to contact me via e-mail that I included on my profile. We would love to promote your product and the energy and effort you put into it. As a Commissioner of the same online league for nine years, you understand my interest in seeing this feature retained.

Thanks for your time,

Yeah Im pretty disappointed to see the multiplayer function go bye-bye. Im surprised there hasnt been many online leagues for PureSim. It seems like there are always players wanting to join online leagues (judging by other game engines). As an owner in the XIBL, its kind of a bummer since we were just discussing ways to get the league to the latest version as XCom said earlier, and in the 10 or so seasons Ive been in the league, its been a very smooth and very enjoyable experience.

I will say that after playing in many types of online leagues over the last 10 years that the XIBL's usage of Puresim is the smoothest, and gives you the most power as a GM.  Hopefully it will be a feature that is added back into the game in the not to distant future.
