Good morning. Did our 2 minutes silence at 11. Nice to see it being observed again.

Indeed it is. It annoys me that so many people can't be bothered to give two minutes of their year when so many gave everything to ensure that the future generations would be able to live freely

Although no sculptured marble should rise to their memory, nor engraved stone bear record of their deeds, yet will their remembrance be as lasting as the land they honored. ~Daniel Webster

Strange... I thought politics aren't allowed in here? So why does everyone celebrate Germany's defeat?

I didn't think people slept much, if at all, in Fleattle (what with the coffee and whatnot).

Last world cup?

It's not your fault that the politicians have set this date, but wouldn't the beginning of the war be a much better date for that?

not really. What better day than the day the fighting stopped and the survivors got to reflect and then go home?

As T. has already green buttoned me again, I guess I can say this one thing:
Many historians call the 1914 to 1945 era "the second third-years war".

So it leaves a bad taste seeing others celebrate this day.
Anyway, remembering the fallen is a good thing, no matter their nationality. Sad that they had to fall at all! Being forced to kill someone you don't even know is one of the - if not THE - most stupid things at all!

If you really think the laying of wreaths and a 2 minute silence is a celebration then I really don't want to attend any of your parties!

Well.....i suppose there would be some who would use Veteran's day to rub defeat and or this or that into the noses of those who were on a losing side of said conflict....but they're idiots. Veteran's day is about honoring those who had the ballz to go and fight for their country....to risk one's precious hide for a cause bigger than themselves. To use a real life example, when i went to Boeing field last and snapped those pics of the B-17 and 24 that visited. I got a chance to talk to two vets who flew them. It gave me an opportunity to tell them how much i respected what they did......being a typical Internet geek historian wannabe who can easily talk authoritively from the safety of my cushy comfy chair in front of a computer. Anyone with a computer and a google search tool can do that. Anyone can play a wargame and play armchair general. Its quite another thing to actually go up in one of those crates and face death every day. It was a humbling experience to be in the presence of such men.....all the more so in that to this day, i've yet to meet one who didn't scoff at such praise.

There was no talk about the defeated, or politics.

Besides that, here at least, it's also about India, Palestine, Malaya, Korea, Suez Canal Zone, Kenya, Cyprus, Suez 1956, Borneo, Vietnam, Aden, Radfan, Oman, Dhofar, Northern Ireland, the Falklands War, the Gulf War, Bosnia, Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Iraq, Afghanistan and anywhere else you can think of that British service personnel have served.

Well, I obviously have different a view than all of you.
I can see your point of view and appreciate it.

I see what followed this date, you see the poor men that died.
I didn't intend to annoy or insult anyone, sorry!

We have the Volkstrauertag (national day of mourning) which is flexible the second sunday before advent. As it is flexible, it doesn't create a connection with a historic event, just with the ones that have fallen, foreign soldiers included.

So for me, there's a difference when this day is "celebrated" on a specific date, that caused... well, we all know what followed...

Also, I didn't know that this is the day to remember the dead of all conflicts - which makes a significant difference.

Yes, it has evolved to be something more than just a celebration of the armistice.

At least, some had the chance to expect just the worst, again - despite obviously being just cultural differences and differences in understanding...

That's as sad as the weather is here...
