ORIGINAL: Historiker Hey John, do you know whether there's a way to let conversions and upgrades cost something, so that naval or merchant points have to be spent? Unfortunately, no. It would have to be done in code. It was seriously looked at, but the whole production model would have had to change, and the whole idea of conversions was speculative. If the production model incorporated it, the model would be highly skewed for someone who just let things alone. There wasn't any time left for that extensive a rewrite. The choice ended up being that upgrades/conversions cost time and distance; time to do the deed and distance in that many have to happen where the shipyards are, so putting a radar on a DD (for example) means schlepping her butt back to Japan, as well as the refit time. F***!!! I read about that once and was hopeing soooo much! This would've ment that ANY ship suitable for a carrier conversion - and that's a lot, even for the Japs, might have that option. How can this be done now? I see no way without giveing the Japs dozends of carriers for free... So even the CS to CVL conversions are for free?
