OK.  Nobody write anything funny, witty, interesting, informative, WitP related, or non-WitP related today.  I have a lot of work to do and I can't have all you chaps distracting me all day.

Well it hasn't happened yet, so you should be okay.

Seeing as most of you guys are foreign...  Does anyone know why foreigners feel the need to try and talk to British people in an (poor) impression of a British accent?

I suppose it beats talking louder and slower in the vain hope of making foreigners understand you.

That's how we talk to them, they should get their own way of communicating with foreign types

You're right, but I don't know why. I just know that, for some reason, it's very easy to slip into an "imitating" mode when talking to you British guys. I do that, just as I slip into some horrible "american" accent when I speak to a US native.

Every time I go away (mostly to North America it has to be said) there is always at least one person who hears us talking and wanders over with what seems to be either an impression of Dick Van Dyke circa Mary Poppins or Queen Victoria circa 1900. And did I mention they are terrible attempts.

I would probably give you more Monty Python circa 1975. That's where I learned my English.

I say old bean, dashed unsporting of you to speak of your American cousins that way.

Don't feel bad, every Brit I've known here either thinks North Americans talk like Texans, Californians or , God Forbid, Archie Bunker style New Yorkers. Even they don't say "Turdy-turd street". Only Brits trying to be NYers do. Your lot has never heard of Canada , or even discovered that there ARE other parts of the USA. On the other hand , it's easy to sound like a Londoner....Just sound like you are from somewhere else!

Of course part of the the problem might be that the British themselves not knowing what a British accent sounds like. With all your British actors doing American accents, and your country over run by foreignors, it's not wonder you are confused. At King Alfred's I was always being asked "what part of England are you from" by Brits. When I would reply "New England" , I acutally had people ask me "Is that near Wales?", and "Oh , that's near Devon isn't it?'. Needless to say , I quicly realized that Americans were not the only people poor at geography.

Poor is not the word I'll admit I wouldn't know most regional US accents from each other, but I do know that you don't just come in New York Gangster or Texan Cowboy varieties I wouldn't try to talk with the accent either, apparently I have a bad enough one already although I disagree.
