Frustrated tithe.  I tried updating my graphics card drivers but something went screwy in the middle of the update, now I keep getting a bblack screen when windows starts   I've updated all the drivers manually and it still keeps happening...

go into safe mode, uninstall the drivers and start from scratch

Done that. Safe mode works. Restart the PC and it works fine, when I install the new drivers and restart I get the black screen. Every tine Drivers have been unistalled and reinstall four times now,,,

The rollback option isn't there, so I'm going to try some older drivers from the website. I wish I knew where the original driver disk was right now.

Because they enjoy whining more.

If nothing else works, as a last resort you might try drivers designated for another O/S. I had an ongoing issue with getting one of my laptops to run an Epson Scan utility using the designated XP drivers. After a dozen unsuccesses i installed the "vista" version and wella.....program now runs perfectly even though i'm running XP and the program is the "Vista" version.

Nvidia drivers can be finiky. If all else fails roll back to old set.

Much as the French view wine as a 'flavor enhancer' with meals, I view playing AE and forum visits as a 'whine enhancer'. They truly complement one another. My whines wouldn't be nearly as complete if I didn't play the game. My gaming wouldn't be as fulfilling if I couldn't whine about how much I suck at the game.

This is very similar to my workstartion at work... (Vista x64 and nVIDIA 8xxx)...

I am still using "nVIDIA ForceWare v191-07 Vista (x64)" and it is OK.

Can you find those? Do you want me to find it for you?

I had a recent battle getting "Mass Effect" to work on my Win7(x64) rig. Forgetting the old axom that usually the simplest solutions are the correct ones, I patched, installed an older version of DirectX and read through several FAQ's before trying the most simple solution....running the exe as "administrator" problem solved.

I've noticed that Win7 is very finiky about this, right down to not giving any hint as to why. (in XP, on the rare occasions you'll get a msg saying you don't have priviledges.....Win7 just says program stopped working, search for solution? and if you click yes....it hour glasses then does nothing.)

I'm getting really fed up now.  Before the nvidia drivers are installed the PC loads fine using a VGA driver.  After the drivers are installed I get a black screen at the point where I'd usually get a windows is loading screen.  No mouse or keyboard, no cursor, no HDD activity, nothing.

I'v tried the 181.22 vista 64 drivers, and the same thing happens.  Not sure where to go from here.  There's no option to rollback the drivers, and system restore doesn't seem to have solved it.

not specifically. The only trouble i've had with Nvidia drivers is downloading one that says "supported device not found" when i try to run the executible forcing me to go back to their not so well designed website and search for answers.

In general i've heard that even some of the big wigs have been playing 'catchup' in terms of providing working drivers for Microsoft's new 64bit O/S's I had for example to scrounge up a 'homemade' driver pkg for a NetGear USB wireless modem because NETGEAR had (as of that time) yet to produce an official 64bit driver for Win7 and none of the older driver pkgs worked.

Might be that this particular driver set is buggy with certain rigs under Vista64. If none of the prior solutions work and you can't roll back, i'd next start searching the internet for home-spun solutions.

Getting closer, using XP drivers I get to the Microsoft Corporation screen but it freezes before it moves on. Still, it's further than I got using the Vista drivers...

Martin, can you go to "Safe Mode" (or VGA Only 640x480) and then remove (i.e. deinstall) nVIDIA driver?

Then reboot.

Only then try to install older nVIDIA driver that works!

Thanks for all advice Nik and Leo, finally got it fixed. Despite the best efforts of Vista I managed to uninstall all the nvidia stuff, and I also tracked down my orginal driver disk. Odd that none of the drivers from the website will work, but hey-ho...

Glad you're back up and running, Dixie.

It can be very frustrating to go in circles.  It's what I've spent my week doing at work, trying to configure a security environment.
