Bah, Russia is a thugocracy, and money buys the best thugs. He'll be fine as long as he continues to pay the Vory their due.

Yeah I seem to recall that certain people said that about Lenin. "Oh , we'll just buy him off". Come to think of it, they said the same about Hitler. Perhaps our Russian capitalist considers such a vessel a "good insurance policy".

Blech that yacht is hideous. Anybody know why the tumblehome design has come back in to fashion for ships? I've heard it is part of the stealth package but it has to be a pain to keep dry.

Who's yacht? Mike's yacht?

Welcome to the wonderful world of sailboat design. People pour millions of dollars every year into developing and tweaking the racing design rules, and tens of millions of dollars every year into finding any edge they can.

Most cruising boats are designed by racing sailors and are configured to let the owner race every now & then, without taking a major handicap hit. I could give ya 4 big reasons why a boat designed in the 70s or 80s has tumble home – but just think IOR Mk-1 and 2. I could give you a tutorial if you really want.

Given all these hundreds of millions of dollars spent on tightening up the rules, and finding ways around them, using the most powerful computational tools we got on the entire planet, I think a handful of amateurs, working for free, doing the AE thing, is something utterly beyond normal expectations.

Certainly seems a number of people around here don't know what to make of it... I thought you'd be on the waves by now, John?

Neither do I, pal. Not on the waves yet. Airplanes all day Monday flying East. Already packed and ready to boogie. Looking at a 0600 Bermuda local departure Wednesday.

The difference of course is that these days, the corruption is de rigeur all the way to the top. You think Mr Ex-KGB Vladi Putin is squeaky clean? Of course he isn't; why do you think he's had so many people killed?

Sailors from the age of sail used to decry the ugliness of steel vessels too.

He's not going to do it himself... That's why he's got 'not the KGB' on speed-dial on his mobile phone. I wouldn't open the door to any heavily accented delivery men Or go drinking tea that glows

I've just managed to get Repulse to Simon's Town repair yard after almost three months of trekking across the Indian Ocean.  She needs 375 days worth of repairs before she's ready for action again   I think I prefered the old style of not knowing   Seeing as it's taking that long she's off to the UK for her repairs instead, now I'm scared to see how long some of those PH ships will need...
