And move it down into the sewer with yours? You're the guy who's getting all worked up from fantasizing about my sex life, ya know (I'd call it a "love life," but, as sister Tina sang it, "What's love got to do with it?").

Again with the two of you? Not that there's anything wrong with that!

Hey, Yuri and I are old pals. Did I ever show ya the picture of us together?

No sloppy seconds for me, dude.

Sharon and I were kind of an item for awhile in high school, but she dumped me for Keith, who was a wrestler. I guess she liked his takedown technique.

I ran into her twice after that, once when I was home on leave from the Air Farce (and, yes, we went out for a few laps around the track) and later at our five-year reunion (when I saw, evenat the tender age of 23, poor Sharon had been ridden hard and put away wet a few times too often).

Too bad. I always liked Sharon. Great sense of humor. In her senior year, after she finished second to Jackie - who else? - for homecoming queen, she said to me, "She's gonna need dentures at an early age, 'cause somebody's gonna get so sick of that cheesy smile they're gonna kick it right down her throat."

I dont suppose any of this stuff is actually true.

Perish the thought. I doubt that even at my tender age I'd be able to keep up with the likes of you or JWE.

Grits is a collective noun.

Cllective noun? That sounds vagely communistic. I'm glad you were paying attention to your grammar teacher. I wasn't. (Or spelling either).

Well....my mom was a grammar teacher. I paid attention whether I wanted to or not.

I thought your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of Elderberries....

Yuri, you ignorant slut. I thought you were a student of history. You can't be elected king, you have to be born to the purple ... like Aretha Franklin ... or Duke Ellington ... or King Crimson ...

Only on your worthless rockpile of a planet, maybe - here on the Big Blue Marble, those were "selections," not "elections." When you "elect," you choose a representative from among peers. When you "select," you appoint one who becomes a superior, not a representative.

But, of course, I await your argument en riposte with bait on my breath ... hope they're not biting.

And do I have to explain to you that apostrophes are not used to form plurals, Mr. Grammarteer?

+1.
The idea (or false knowledge ) that most people have about Kings come from 17th century.
But in the first years, in Ancient Greece, in Holy Roman Empire, in middle age France, Britain, or else, Kings were elected...in fact, co-elected in their peers of the nobility.
Sometimes, the argument for electoral campaign was just to show a sword...it could convince...

Call it late stage rebellion against youthful indignities.

Sorry, but you don't define what 'elect' means. The people doing it are the definers, and they said they elected a king. From their peers (nobles). So there.

I'm with Pas on this one. Theres a great big line between an election and the choice of a figurehead.

No there isn't. It's just your democratized perspective. I suppose our early elections were not elections because only the landed had sufferage?

Bah. Elections are simply a group choosing a leader from amongst them. Nothing more.

In a very idealized sense you are completely right, but are we talking de facto or du jure?

Careful. None of the exemplar societies you name spoke modern English, and we are writing in modern English here (or in Mynok's case, making a vain attempt to do so).

The simple idea I was expressing by example is to preserve subtle distinctions in language so as to help people form rational thoughts. You engage in the silly sophistry you accuse others of pursuing by calling those processes "electoral campaigns." Let's be clear when being serious.

And, let's not be insulting. There was no need to throw in that "false knowledge" slam.

I don't dispute for a moment anything you say. My point was merely on usage, not politics.

And they weren't suffering. They exercised suffrage.

What does language, time period, or culture have to do with it? That's right. NOTHING.

"Elections" are not limited to some 20th century American concept.

Sufferage is a noun. My sentence used it as the direct object of a verb. Perfectly correct grammar and semantics.
