No, see, "redneck" is a term of prideful self-application on the one side, and intended as pejorative by those who are not proud to be rednecks.

"Hillbilly" is pretty archaic, and conjures up images of Li'l Abner, Daisy Mae and the rest. It's a pretty toothless (tee hee) general term anymore that is used harmlessly and even fondly as a description of poor, rural people in such places as West Virginia, southern Missouri, northern Arkansas and western Tennessee. Unsophisticated views of all Southerners tend to identify them generically as "hillbillies."

You've probably heard "peckerwood" connected with "white supremacist" by those who live in vague fear and are looking for a way to comfort themselves by applying dismissive, trivializing labels to those who are perceived to threaten them.

True enough. But from a consumerist perspective, I prefer Russian products. They just plain taste better. I was a tad young to remember a lot of details, but I do remember that chicken soup in Russia had a very full, pleasant smell. Here it barely smells at all.

A few years back my parents went to Russia to visit. Somehow (which is another story), my mother (god bless her soul) managed to sneak two large garlands of dried mushrooms through customs on the way back. As soon as she took them out of the bag, the whole house was filled with that magical, forest scent of mushroom that I hadnt felt for years. Maybe its different for folks in rural areas, but IMHO the food we get here is calorically rich, but tastes like processed ass.

I totally get the consumerist angle. But the thing is...I'm sure pas will back me on this...ass sells. You can keep your magical musrooms (unless you're in CA-then there's a 'first mover' advantage for magical mushrooms), as there's little hope of feeding a hungry world with memories of magical smells and ye olde memories.

Actually, the guys themselves referred to themselves with that term. But, again, that was JH days, so we're obviously not dealing with mental giants.

Cant say I agree. Its a sad thought for me that my kids and grandkids might never know what chicken soup is supposed to smell like on a cold, snowy day.

Yep, I prefer my little pleasures to what feeds the masses, but what you gonna do? Like Winston and Julia in 1984, you'd like to hide, have sex and drink fresh tea with sugar, but the world's reality is pseudo stew and victory gin.

At 8am, my opponent informed (via SMS) that I had a turn in my inbox ...

This game is dangerously addictive ...

Of course, I had some incentive to get up and do my turn - I had to set up my CV sneak attack on Truk. With both KB and Mini KB in DEI, I thought it was time to send a message ... . It will be very interesting to see the outcome when I get the turn back later today ...
