Hi all,

quote:

ORIGINAL: Terminus

I didn't have to format C:\. The problem was a bad driver, which my old install was unable to repair, so I did a fresh install on the same drive.

Now you lost me a bit...

What exactly happened?

#1
They sold you new PC (everything new) with Win7 and it didn't work or stopped working when you got home so you yourself installed Win7 again on same partition as they did (and as result you have "windows.old" folder)?

This is done by booting PC with Win7 DVD.

#2
You had old windows installation on HDD and they upgraded your old windows installation to Win7 (i.e. retaining old programs and settings but in new Win7)?

This is done by starting Win7 install within old windows (i.e. from working windows system).

I am now guessing that you had #1.

BTW, I always reformat partition when installing OS from CD/DVD boot (because the old system is irrelevant and clean install on empty partition is reccomended).

It worked fine from the time I got it home yesterday until I went to bed last night. This morning, it wouldn't start. I went through the whole song-and-dance about repairing the installation without success, so I went for the fresh install.

I didn't format the HDD because I'd forgotten to backup my "Documents" folder. I've done so now, so if it crashes again, C:\ will be formatted before reinstall.

The only thing I've lost was my FF bookmarks list, which was past due for a clean-up anyway, so it's not so bad.

I wholeheartedly suggest XMarks Firefox bookmark sync program - great utility that will enable you to have same bookmarks (if you wish) on every PC you use and that you never again loose the stuff!

For accessing the unbootable / unstartable windows I reccomend "Live CD/DVD/USB" with either mini WinXP of some Linux distribution!

You simply boot with CD/DVD/USB installation and copy the needed stuff from broken (even NTFS) partition to wherever place you need...

I'd exported my bookmarks from my old PC (HTML file) and had imported them successfully to the previous Win 7 install on this computer. Then, obviously, I erased the backup.

Why wouldn't I?

Either way, take 2, as the saying goes... I'm still happy with my brand new computer, and the fact that I managed to solve this problem myself.

Hi all,

One other thing I STRONGLY recommend is having smart partitioning of the HDD (or HDDs) - I can't emphasize more how important is that and how it is not OK to have just one single partition with everything!!!

1 HDD (or similar "mirror" RAID configurations)

#1
Main partition = 50 GB MAX (this is where the Operating system would be)

#2
SWAP partition = 5 GB MIN (this is where the SWAP file will be = make sure that you choose 64 KB cluster for this one for best performance because IO operation in Windows is 64 KB)

#3
Game partition

#4
Data partition

#5
Archive partition

2 HDDs (or similar "mirror" RAID configurations)

#1a
Main partition = 50 GB MAX (this is where the Operating system would be)

#1b
Archive partition

#2a
SWAP partition = 5 GB MIN (this is where the SWAP file will be = make sure that you choose 64 KB cluster for this one for best performance because IO operation in Windows is 64 KB)

#2b
Game partition

#2c
Data partition

Hmm, sounds like a good idea. It DID annoy me somewhat to have everything just lumped on that one big drive.

Unfortunately 99.99% of people have just one single partition. Same is when you buy PC from small shop or some big vendor (HP, Dell etc.)... this is very bad setup when things go wrong (and they will go wrong eventually)...

With several partitions you simple learn/train yourself to put stuff where it needs to be!

So... instead of using" My Documents" as default (and it is in C:) you put your stuff on "Data" partition, same with Games - install them to "Game" partition!

Also, this gives you chance to have BackUp of your C: partition to, for example, "Archive" partition regurarely (I do it once a week) and you can go back in time if something goes wrong in just few minutes (of course this only works if you have keep your data in "Data" partition and have small C: with just Operating system and other needed programs (but not games that are usually huge and are better to be in separate "Game" partition)!

I'll mess around with the disks later. Now, I think it's time to turn this thing off and go for a walk. Sun's actually shining, and temp's above freezing.

Thanks for your replies, Leo.

Enjoy Kristian!

We will go mountain hiking tomorrow (12+ hours total)... on our near-by mountain (1 km high) there are 60+ cm of snow!

And no problem at all... it was my pleasure...

I'll need something to keep me sane......and prevent me from committing homicide!

So when are you going to break down and start doing PBEM's again?

Hopefully, soon.

I'll look forward to it. Perhaps someday I can get a rematch on our earlier vanilla WITP games?

Can someone help me out?  I need a cup of tea, but Josh has fallen asleep on my lap and if I move he's going to do that crying thing that babies seem so fond of.  Mrs Dixie is asleep upstairs so I need someone to nip over and make me a brew.

Hi Per; at least, YOU could have a drink, if not Martin

I had more than a few drinks yesterday, thank you .

Yesterday evening I hosted a dinner for a couple of classmates from elementary school (I don't know if that's the correct name). We met last summer at the 30 years reunion and found out that we now live in the same city, so "we have to get together some time". We actually did it.

Three ladies plus me. Italian buffet. My apartment has a "faint" garlic miasma and I feel just a tad queasy ...
