Watching BBC News, today's hot topic is young drivers who don't have insurance.  They interviewed one **** who said that he got caught driving without insurance.  His justifaction was along the lines that he couldn't afford the cost and it was up to the insurance companies to charge young drivers less   If you can't afford to insure your car then you can't afford to drive, it's not optional...  I had to make do with being poor for a while so I could afford to insure my car to get to work to pay for the insurance

And you you went to school uphill both ways barefoot in the snow, lived in a cardboard box etc. I just joined the navy, from bed to place of work is less than 100ft.

I've just played through an interesting 4-5 days against the AI.  The IJN turned up in the Indian Ocean and started bombing the **** out of everything they could find.  Eventually the RAF CAP managed to shoot down enough Kates and I felt safe enough to send in the RN.  3 days of combats later, Force Z sank the Akagi (and maybe Kako) and several DDs along with some slight damage on the other carriers.  On the downside every one of my TB squadrons has been gutted.  Most of the squadrons are down to a couple of a/c left and my Beaufort sqn had all of their planes destroyed.  Most of the Fulmar units are in the same state and although the Hurricanes did OK for themselves on defence they suffered more on escort missions.  PoW, Warspite, Royal Sovereign,  Dorsetshire, Mauritius, Exeter, Dragon, Ceres, Abdiel, Encounter, Vampire and Vendetta are all in need of repairs.  The cruisers and battleships are going to be out of comission for months with the repair facilities available   Several tankers and transports were sunk as well in the first few days.

Overall, a nice little victory.  Plenty of the KBs pilots won't be returning to Japan, or anywhere else

What do you do to force surface engagements? Simply React 6 when near the enemy?

Did KB run out of torps and/or bombs?

The KB had been sat in the same hex for the past couple of days, so I sent the surface forces to that hex using waypoints. The waypoints were set so that if the KB did move then there would be a chance of an intercept although the first combat took place in the original target hex at night. After that it descended into chaos I did have the (4) surface forces on max react which I think helped to get them into combat once the KB's damaged ships scattered.

I've since got recce reports that a BB, I'm sure it's a cruiser though, is still in the area so Formidable is being sent to finish her off

They were still dropping torps on me right to the end, although I'm not sure if that's because 1) they get unlimited torps, or 2) because they'd been dropping bombs on Colombo, or 3) several raids turned back without dropping weapons (in that case do they keep the weapons?).

I think they actually ran out of sorties/aircraft. The last few attacks were by no more than half a dozen Kates with a decent Zero escort. My attacks on the last few days were coming up against a CAP of 30+ Zeroes each time.

EDIT: Checking the save reveals:
Kaga, 15x Zero, 1x Val, 0x Kate. 42/45 torps left and 657/675 sorties
Shokaku, 11x Zero, 1x Val, 1x Kate. 43/45 torps and 545/561 sorties
Zuikaku, 17x Zero, 1x Val, 5x Kate. 41/45 torps and 546/561 sorties
Akagi, SUNK!

That doesn't sound too dangerous
But it also reveals that the AI apparently has (nearly) unlimited sorties and torps.

I didn't bother checking on their locations, but I feel safe sending my single carriers out into the Indian Ocean to mop up even if they are nearby Having said that, it only takes three torps to effectively kill a carrier...
Their gun ammunition has been expended, and one of the carriers has lost their visual lookout device. Looks like the sailors had their specs smashed in combat

At this point the massive loss of IJN pilots is the major happy point, the loss of a carrier is a bonus. Good job my Cats saw them coming in plenty of time. I massed as much of the RAF as I could spare from the rest of India (7 Hurricane Squadrons, 1 FUlmar Squadron) and disembarked my carrier fighters with my carriers kept out of the way for a few days.

Just was out running for 18km. I really had to slow myself down all time not to run faster...
Seems I'm quite motivated, no?

If my dive and Torp bombers can't destroy the carriers on their own, I try and us an RTS style rush tactic with CA and DD Spam.I rush in, hit carriers of 1 round of surface battles, then I make a dash for home base.

I figured that my surface forces would have a better chance to reach the carriers than the Swordfish, Albacores and Fulmars

Yep, in my last coral sea game as allies, dive and torp bombers didn't do squat.Only got 1 bomb hit in the whole game.I was able to get all my CA's and most of my DD's in surface combat with the carrier's and their escorts, both carriers were burning by the end of the day.

Throw tbds in there too. Always thought the side-art of those planes would be more accurate if rotated 90 degs clockwise with flames shooting from the tail.

Same here. Don't quite have the rainman logistical abilities to hit the gc yet. Up to 10/42 in the guadacanal scenario. The scenario shows the difficulty in accumulating fuel/supplies and transporting them where needed well. Aircraft capacity may be another matter . . .

Time to restart the GC then. And after I'd just masterminded the Royal Navy's greatest victory since Matapan (I know it's only 12 months, but still...)

The change list for the first patch is quite impressive!  Our little AE dev friends have been busy.

yeah ... yeah, ain't it just. We supposedly had Beta testers, but as Termie says, it was earplug city. On the Nav side, we had some good ones (Brady, Treespider, Mike, etc.) but they were spread so thin .. so, so thin.
