Does anyone even know where the word "soccer" comes from? Any etymologists out there?

http://www.soccer-fans-info.com/origin-of-the-word-soccer.html

Whether it's true or not is another matter. I seem to recall other versions of the origin as well.

I always figured that it came from the Andy Capp cartoon strips... combining his style of play and how he treated Flo, his wife...

Huh...so an Englishman named Charles Wreford Brown coined the term "soccer" as an abbreviation of "Football Association" (which doesn't make a whole lot of sense) sometime in the late 1800's. But the English never took to the word and continued calling it football. Well there you go...

Thanks anarachyintheuk...or as Charles Wreford Brown would abbreviate...nayuk.

We've got Dempsey and Donovan who are both top players. You'd better watch out for Jozy Altidore as well. He's young and inexperienced but a deadly finisher.

I'm much more concerned that we will be organized on defense. We play a counterattacking style so England will have the possession advantage.

the fact that i'm starting to enjoy watching this dumb game while sitting at the George and Dragon pub doesn't mean i'm turning English.

Death to SOCCER.

i'm a RED BLOODED AMERICAN. I like cars, monster truck rallies and wet t-shirt competitions!

I'm ENGLISH, and I like cars and wet t-shirt competitions. Monster trucks though? I prefer something like touring cars.

Until you can understand the pleasure of a 0-0 draw on a rainy day against Bradford City you'll never really understand football

Dempsey is (IMO) probably the best player you've got. Landon Donovan though runs hot and cold. He's done well in the MLS but hasn't really made an impact when he played in Germany (or England this winter). Tim Howard is a pretty good player as well, the US seems to have several good 'keepers at the moment. There's a decent midfield with the squad they've taken to SA. Not sure about yout Jozy, he was pretty anonymous for Hull last season.

Looking at your squad I can't help thinking it's a decent side, but it's short of that extra 'something'. I'm not sure how the defence will hold up against Rooney, Lennon and Milner. Or Gerrard if he actually decides to play well for a change.

Our right-back is not too good on the defence though...

Isn't Gerrard obligated to suck if Lampard is in the lineup?

That's a pretty smart take, Dixie. I think we got some decent keepers, and the midfield is fairly solid, but we ain't got doo doo for strikers. We can't pass - we just frikkin don't know how. And we can't 'team' it. We don't know how to spread the defense and go outside-in for a shot, or how to bunch the defense and go inside-out. Much as I like our side, I gotta agree, they ain't got that extra 'something'. They are more like reasonable 'clockwork oranges' - don't see any really good intuitive moves.

btw, is it clear that I think Bradley has his head so far up his brookie he's come out the other end and thinks he's seeing clearly?

Hmmm.....maybe it has to do with my former teamates not understanding the pleasure of my inept attempts at kicking the ball that got them unruffled. I was simply doing my part to keep the score 0.

Curiously, Dempsey played college ball at a small school not 10 minutes from where I grew up.

I've not seen our team play in a while. I was much more familiar with the group we took to the last one.

If we play solid defense, we have enough speed and skill up front, even if it isn't efficient or pretty, to counterattack successfully.

Which is why it is taking so long for it to catch on in the US. There's a long standing US attitude that a tie in a sports event is "like kissing your sister".

No, that's an excuse. They'll praise a 1-0 baseball game for being a masterpiece but curse a 1-0 soccer game as boring. Don't worry. Once the baby boomer generation and their stupid prejudices have died off, America will become a football power. Just about every kid born after 1970 has played soccer growing up. It's the 40 and up's that don't like the game. Because they are idiots.

soccer requires beer.

preferrably one with a classic wood bar, old wooden stools and Fish and Chips on the menu.

A few years from now it'll be the USA and China as major teams on the world stage (along with Brazil, Argentina and Germany). They've both got a big pool to choose from and football is taking hold in those nations. They're also both fairly stable economies which means that people are able to spend their youth playing games instead of doing work. Unlike many, I don't believe that any African nation will be a major team for the forseeable future.

D**n ... I flew up this afternoon to visit my parents over the weekend. Normally, I bring an USB stick with the AE installation files with me to install on my ol' mans PC and thus get my daily fix. I just got a turn from my opponent, and just then realised I forgot the USB stick in Stockholm ...

... and I had, of course, done a clean sweep deinstallation of the game last time I was here.

Africa has more talent than the rest of the world combined. They just aren't organized and have no one to do so.
