Victory

From a purely French Point of vue i feel offended

Didn't I hear somewhere that the French were restoring a Napoleonic war era frigate?

I was a Chief Petty Officer

WIth my previous post in mind, I'll also admit that this draws an almost complete blank for me ...

i must admit that i hate all of you: i was most of the time a simple rank soldier, obeying orders from pettys officers.
And then suddenly i was officer (well, in fact "reserve officer") and still suddenly dismissed (for wound).
So i don't know exactly what to think

Well...some of us have been civvies all our lives. The only officer we've known is a woman, and there's not a Marine gunny out there who could stand up to her.

That's OK Eric. I hate you too! I was selected for a commissioning program, but they closed the program before everbody signed off on my paperwork!

If right, it is probably a private initiative. I don't think the actual governement will put much money in culture.
Hmmmm, stopping talk about politics, or i am going frenzy.

By floats , we mean on real water! She wasn't nailed to her dry dock (like Victory) or made part of the lawn (like Mikasa).

Hmmm, we also have nothing left from Mers-el-Kebir

damn brit's ...... (kidding, seriously, kidding, no offense intended)

Yeah and they just tried to sink one of your "boomers" (SSBN's). OK , they did it demolistion derby style (colliding with it). But I think for the RN old habits die hard!

Eric, I would bet a case of beer that the occupying English forces after the first abdication would have commandeered any floating French warship. After all, they were built much better than the British ones and they certainly couldn't have such nice ships running about with Frenchmen on board.

Just don't forget the most important words for a female officer ..."yes Ma'am". It's the military version of "Yes dear".
Bon Appetite!

And would be , until the unruly ex-colonials got into the fray! Especially the 44 gun frigates!
There must have been quite the pushing match to see who got HMS (Formerly USS) President!

The 36's were'nt bad either , just somewhat less lucky. Sloops and brigs were also well built , but except for America (Rev war vintage and badly built---rush job!) there wouldn't be any USN Ships of the line till after the 1812 war, so none were captured.

Victory is at Portsmouth, correct?  If I am remembering correctly, then I also have been there.

Mikasa is a wonderful visit. But be sure to bone up on your Japanese! Very few signs in other languages. The only other ship of her era still around to my knowledge is USS Olympia.

You are the backbone of any military (Excepting the Swedish,Russian, and Israeli----at least to my knowledge) you are an NCO. Be proud of it! Nothing happens till an NCO makes it happen! Officers order, junior personnel carry out the orders, but NCO's make it happen , and happen correctly! They are a cross between nursing home attendants (for the officers, especially senior ones) and babysitter/nursemaids (for Junior personnel) and most of all , nannies for the junior officers!

I have somewhere a book (in english please !) about the war on see at the age of sail.
I don't have the details in mind, but the number of ships having changed flag after a battle is really big !

Almost forgot about HMS Belfast. That was cool too. HMS Unicorn? not the maintenance carrier?

Mikasa, i believe, is the only surviving Pre-Dreadnought "era" battleship after the standardization setting HMS Royal Sovereigns, same as with Texas for the Dreadnought "era". (yes....technically any ship before or after Dreadnought is a pre-Dread, or Dread if post....but era wise...the types also defined a classic period of instant recognition among battleships due to standardization of features.

anyway....the above blah blah is why the Texas/Mikasa really sparked my imagination for a visit as those eras are my favorites. Visiting the Missouri and Massachussets, while awesome since they are BB's (my fav class) simply could never compare to the uniqueness of visiting the Texas in '99. HMS Warrior, the first ironclad, was similar given her place in history and her uniqueness. I'm not as smitten with the wooden era so Victory and Constitution were less thrilling but all are enjoyable of course. I wonder/doubt if i'll ever get to Japan though.

The Unicorn I was referring to was a 36 gun frigate. Also HMS Tricomlee. Both were still under restoration last I heard....and that was a while ago.I had the good fortune to see HMS Warrior when she was still a coal barge , awaiting to begin restoration. Amazing what has been done!
