Alright, I've done my trolling for faux antipathy amongst the Brits bit for Independence day.    Now I can wish everyone in the United States of America a real happy Independence Day.  Enjoy, celebrate and remember.

Happy 4th of July to the US forum members.

Or as George W. Bush said:
quote:

We join in celebrating one of the great achievements in history, when 56 brave souls pledged their lives, liberty, and sacred honor to declare that America deserved to be free. More than two centuries later, it can be easy to take their act for granted. However, we must remember that the men who signed the Declaration in Philadelphia took an extraordinary risk, and all who fought in the Revolution showed tremendous courage. Their example has inspired generations of Americans to defend our freedom, including those who serve on the frontlines in Afghanistan, Iraq, and elsewhere this 4th of July. As we celebrate this weekend, I hope all Americans will take a moment to honor those who have made our freedom possible, and to renew our commitment to building a democracy that lives up to the ideals they advanced and the sacrifices they made. May God bless America.

Thx Historiker, Sprior, Grollub, et. al.

Glad to see there's no hard feelings, Simon.

Well, you still work for us and speak English (after a fashion)

While I'll agree with you on the English bit (it is a fine language for all its idiosyncracies), you can't still be sore about being under Eisenhower, can you?

I wasn't under Eisenhower It's more the fact that you fight our wars for us (after the hard bit is done)and give our Z-list 'celebrities' somewhere to live

Hi all,

Interesting bit about that George prat from Wiki. Penitence and remorse a natural and inevitable process, eh?

George III is often accused of obstinately trying to keep Great Britain at war with the revolutionaries in America, despite the opinions of his own ministers. In the words of the Victorian author George Trevelyan, the King was determined "never to acknowledge the independence of the Americans, and to punish their contumacy by the indefinite prolongation of a war which promised to be eternal." The King wanted to "keep the rebels harassed, anxious, and poor, until the day when, by a natural and inevitable process, discontent and disappointment were converted into penitence and remorse".

It's strange isn't it, that the other people are always more likely to give in to penitence and remorse than your people? Even when experience has taught otherwise No matter who the other people are...

Hope you're all enjoying your day over there, don't do anything to daft though

One can only wonder what could have happened if someone else was head of state instead of George III...

Don't you mean 'zed' list?

Interesting linguistic nuances...do you refer to your 'also ran' celebrities as "z-list" or 'B-list'? Here it's the latter.

Terror From the Deep, £2.24!

I remember playing this back when I first started playing PC games.  There's still not much out there to match it IMO, the devious aliens, the incredible tech tree, the fact that anything from memory is better than anything new....

Hi all,

BTW, we went to see "Bodies Revealed" exhibition today... quite fascinating (my wife is medical doctor so she saw even more in that than me)...

Leo "Apollo11"

Is this the whole plastination exhibition? Heard good things about the various renditions of this. A little too grotesque for the kids yet (ages 6 and 3), but would be interesting.

Yep... plastination...

BTW, that exhibition is pure anatomy - no "bizarre" positions...

My wife (medical doctor) told me that such graphic 3D models would tremendously help medicine students when learning anatomy (and various other medical stuff)!

P.S.
The thing that impressed us both are the intricate 3D maze / network of blood vessels only - it was something to behold!

The exhibit has been on tour for a good many years. They considerably "toned-down" some of the displays after early controversy.

You can borrow some of the extra wovels we have in the swedish alphabet. We have three extras that we put after the "Z". The last one is "Ö" (An O with two dots above)

Steve, there are several different exhibitions...

The most controversial one is by German anatomist (and pioneer of this) Gunther von Hagens called "Body Worlds"... that one tries to be "artsy"...

Something that even the most over-protective of "helicopter parents" wouldn't object to. For most people , it's "why bother?".

Well, off to my "traditional old-Maine 4th of July dinner". Salmon pie with egg sauce, new peas, new potatoes, corn on the cobb, American pale ale, followed by strawberry short cake (or sometimes Indian pudding!).

Hi Leo,

Your wife is right. We've been using plastinated / formalin-fixed specimens for years on the veterinary educational front. I can imagine that such models would be very useful for teaching human anatomy as well. The vasculature tree display is most impressive.

Absolutely! But not chocholate. Nor vanilla (sorry Leo). Indian pudding is kind of a British style pudding made with molasses.
