I've yet to have a problem with Kaspersky though i also use Adaware and Spybot to make sure. I've heard good things about Malware Bytes but havn't tried it.

I use Malware Bytes. Very pleased with it. Also have Adaware and Spybot but Malware Bytes seems to be a bit more robust and comprehensive. Use CCleaner too.

dear thread...today i was informed by my wife that my 73 year old mother-in-law cleaned up our master bed room...should i feel violated? thanks...

That depends entirely on what was there that she had to clean up.

What did she find?

i'm not sure which was more disturbing - watching sweaty-vampire-speed sex scenes with mother-in-law in same room, or having her comment on Betty's "habits" while pregnant:

wife: "So Mom, did you smoke and drink while you were pregnant with me?"
mom-in-law: <silence>
wife: "Mom?"
mom-in-law: "Well, I'm trying to remember...let's see...definitely with your brothers...I think I stopped smoking with you."
me: <insert smart-ass comment here>
mom-in-law: "Oh, Kwik...you're so bad!" <laughter>
wife: <evil glare in my direction>
me: "Wow, look at the time...early day tomorrow, you know. G'night!"

If you were born in the 60s smoking and drinking were probably still considered good for your health . . . and if it's good for an adult's health it's gotta be twice as good for a fetus, right?

I was born in the '59 and during the pregnancy my mom complained of being tired all day so the doc prescribed Dexedrine and she said she would be scrubbing toilets well into the night.  I also chewed on lead paint, had a crib that I could fit my head thru the bars, stood up on the front seat while my parents were driving and drank water from a garden hose.  Kids nowadays don't know how good they have it.  Probably should cross-post this to the Geezer thread.

Mom was just a girl working as a translater for Occupation Forces HQ in Wiesbaden before Dad lifted his Luger. Chesterfields was all she could get, that was all they had at the PX: all the Luckys got snagged by the Service Force troopers and sold on the black market. But still, Chesterfields were better than Berliner Juno, and a poopload better than that cigarillo stuff Opa brought back from Spain (hell, there's a story that will tweak your willie if you care to hear it).

About the story . . . call me intrigued.

His name was Walter Tewes, just an ordinary middle class Lutheran Rhineland German, who married Frieda Maria (Omi) who was just an ordinary middle class Alsatian Catholic. But Opa was a sergeant in the reserve army, so like a good German, off he goes to Spain.

Well, he was shot and taken to the hospital in Valladolid. He recovered from the gunshot wound but contracted pneumonia. Not expected to live, he was dumped off the porch and left to his own devices.

So, he called on a vision of his Frieda and seeing her image, he got up and walked. He got up and walked all the way from frikkin Spain, through France, till he got home in frikkin Wiesbaden Germany. I only knew him when I was a youngster. If I had known him later, I would have written a frikkin book about what I now realize was a frikkin epic journey. And this was just an ordinary man trying to come home.

Opa died in 1962. He got home to his Frieda, and to their daughter Inge (my mother), and lived to tell the story to his grandchildren. I will always remember his face, and that special glint in his eye when he toasted through a glass of auslese.

Oh, God, If I could only go back. I never frikkin knew. The things he could have told me, the stuff he could have said. But perhaps, it’s best this way. I remember the man. And I think that’s enough

We never realise til it's too late that our grandads were once young too. My maternal grandad took part in the death march across north Germany in early '45 having spent the majority of WWII as a PoW. I only ever knew him as a gentle car mechanic.

You are most correct. My favorite uncle was a silver star recipient at Remargen where he was one of the first engineers across the bridge. Despite the fact I've interviewed hundreds of veterans for oral history projects (and always considerd myself pretty good at getting them to talk) do you think I could ever get him to talk about that experince?

The last ancestor of mine (that I'm aware of) that actually fought in a war fought at Sharpsburg for the north...and deserted if what my gran tells me is true. Hard to blame considering he was a German immigrant who certainly would have realized what a disaster that army was at the time.

Before that, it was three Scots-Irish brothers who fought in the Revolution. One was a courier for Washington and was killed. The others were captains and survived.

My ancestor, John Lemon, settled in Kentucky on a bend in the river, which became known as Lemmon's bend.

His grandson (Jacob) moved to Missouri where he and his second wife (not my side) had 8 sons who all fought in the Late Unpleasantness...7 for the north and one for the South.

Jacob's grandson went to Montana on a wagon train. I have the log of that journey. Fascinating read.
