Steve,

I respect you as a person, a player and an opponent very much. Oh, and a THREAD brother too...

I'm on the other side of this argument though. IMO there IS a community value at identifying hitherto reliable partners for prospective matches. It's not a lovefest, Dun and Bradstreet or any of that.

Anyways, 'nuff said. No hard feelings. We'll just have to agree to disagree on the rationale for this effort.

As I mentioned, the idea has the best of intentions.  Then, people get involved.  Not even "real" people, but relatively anonymous internet posters with less inhibitions and manners than they might normally have in a face to face conversation.

Maybe I'm becoming more cynical, like T , or maybe I'm just becoming more "experienced" with the way things work online, but I can usually see these things running off the road from a mile away.

I do think it's a great idea to make it much easier to find committed PBEM partners and avoid the losers.  I just wish I knew a way, other than word of mouth and personal references, to get it done.

Cynic.

Well, for me, I'll continue to sing the praises of good opponents. If someone gets their undies in a bunch about me being complimentary of my fellow gamers, Tango Sierra to them.

Maybe. But a few of you recall the last time I got involved in such a scheme. (My sig banner referes to it). I really don't need my tailfeathers burned off again. Maybe the good advice from USS America,Mynok and Terminus has finally sunk in (but I somehow doubt it, common sense was never a strong point of mine) , but I'll set this one out , thank you.

Steve,
Many of us feel that you were doing the right thing at the time, so wear your burned tail feathers as a badge of honor.

I won't be on Aprezto's list for a good reason. I have yet to start an AE PBEM. I had an opponent lined up to play the Big Babes when it was ready, but he ran into major real world situation before we even got started. My old opponent from WITP, El Cid, no longer participates in this forum. I'm really more concerned with identifying and avoiding the bad actors such as the one you identified and ruffled.

Thanks for the kind words COS , but I just blew it! And my top with it. I'm totally sick of the whole substance of that thread, I find it insulting, demeaning and just plain stupid! In essence someone is saying , "I'm too lazy to research my opponents,so do it for me! Bring it to my chair, and do a credit report and Dun and Bradstreet on them while your at it! And bring me a latte'! And a ice cream sunday while your at it!" And in the mean while ,let's get all kinds of hurt feelings, and overblown love fests , while everyone needs to list all their friends, or people feel annoyed because they aren't on it!

What next? Credit and background checks? If your not on the list are you unworthy?

I don't know how this forum has existed all this time without such a thread (PLEASE INSERT BIG FLAMMING SARCASM SMILEY HERE!!!!!!!!!!).

That's pretty good, Steve. You should post that in the Geezer thread.

I think you guys are referring to different threads. Steve is referring to the original request several days ago from a noob who wanted to know who the "bad" PBEM opponents were. Andre is referring to the new, "worthy opponents" thread that is in the Opponents Wanted sub forum. They have a completely different tone from each other, hence Steve's reaction.

Fair enough. Obviously the respect is mutual.....I've just played that particular dance (from your point of view , generally) and been fried too often, to be able to agree with you ...and I might add..."any more". A year ago I would have been on your side.....and some wiser Thread brothers would have been suggesting that I calm down and don't get involved. The problem Andre, is that things on the forum get out of hand. No matter how well meaning, well intentioned, or innocent. Like politics, blame, scuttled, sunk etc...... Rule number 1, the golden rule, is "Don't ever get personal". Is there anything more personal on the forum than a players reputation? I'm not saying players shouldn't discuss good experinces or bad, just do it in private.

When I was a very young brand new 3rd class petty officer , a older 1st class petty officer congratulated me and said "always remember, Praise in public, punish in private". As soon as he left the room, a very old and gray CPO grabbed my arm, and whispered "sometimes it's not that simple---sometimes you need to praise in private too!....use your common sense and apply what seems appropriate at the time". "And seldom use the word always or never--it will generally bite you in the @$$".

We will have to agree to disagree. But go carefully! Softly ! And watch out that it doesn't bite you....

True Mike, but the fact is I'm not happy with EITHER of them. And my post to that second thread, as well as my next to latest post here will explain.

Have to say, Steve, the underpants might be just a bit tangled up the forum rather than the game. There's thousands of people who purchased the game and hundreds who voted in the gaming polls, but, although some may lurk, almost none of them post here. So what you get is a very, very, skewed subset of players. It's got nothing to do with the game, really, just a very limited number of internet troopers trying to show how big they think their shriveled little winkies are.

You may be right in attempting to engaging them, but I have learned, through bitter experience, that they are best left alone. Arguing with ignorant arrogance beats you every time because they are so good at it. But your heart is pure and your mind is right.

Ciao. J

John, I can easily imagine about 8-10 of us from the forum, mostly folks who post in THE THREAD!!!, sitting around a big table on a patio overlooking some busy beachfront, just people watching.  As we each sip our chilled beverage of choice we will notice something that someone in the crowd does, and with barely a word one of us will say, "yep", and everyone else will smile and nod in agreement.  I'm not sure what this thing is called, but it might be the first signs of "wisdom with age" in me.

Oh, Trade winds!  I forgot, there have to be trade winds there, too!

There's a firm in Ft. Worth (at least there used to be) called Law, Snakard and Gambill (pronounced gamble of course). Gotta be my favorite.

Agree on JWE's point about skewed forumites. It's a logical generalization those that post tend to be more opinionated (and willing to express that opinion) than those that don't, otherwise they'd make the time to do so.

John , as always , your words show wizdom beyond your years. I really wish I could show restraint like you and so many of your wiser than me (that would be anyone her but me). I try , I really do. I say "I won't say a thing"..... "I won't say a thing"..... "I won't say a thing"..... and then , all of a sudden I'm Donald Duck having a fit of apoplexy!!BOOM!

And any common sense dissappears in a hisy fit of legendary proportion! I should be calm like my wife who says "skip the drama and go direct to fire-arms and high explosive!" .
There. Thanks for your kind words and thoughts. There....I'm in my happy place. Ommmmm.
I think I'll pop in on my favorite hippie over at the geezer thread. Flowers and puppies, ......

Quite fine thank you. I "only" have 1,5 week left until it's back to work, but then again, I've had 5.5 weeks of vacation already ...

I'm actually starting to feel a little restless ...

upon hindsight, that other thread is poorly named...it should probably have been titled "reliable opponent"...they are talking about playing someone not likely to quit in the middle of a game, right? for the record, i could be convinced to be highly reliable (maybe not worthy) for a nominal periodic fee...
