Its in the works, but will be a while. In conjunction with planning work for it it I am also working on redoing the other two scenarios partially, accounting better for available shipyards and other factors, for both sides. This should make some of the ship arrival dates less "haphazard" (like the ~1 DD a month we see now for the IJN), as I'll look at each individual ship in more detail. I also want to fix up a few of the discontinuities, like the presence of 15.5cm/60 CD guns when that weapon never existed in this mod. Some of the ships may see design changes too, most likely including changes to subdivide certain ship classes partially, and even more flexiblity for conversions. I may also look into revising ammo values and armour values to account for certain factors that are currently absent.

Along with this I'm planning on a few alterations for both air and land OOBs. Chances are I will get a 'beta' version of CV Variant out based on the current Enhanced BB variant, and then once the bigger version of Da Babes mod comes out, look into using that (with their permission of course) as a base for a new generation of scenarios. This will likely only happen around summertime, depend on when it is available of course. If I decide to start earlier then I will simply use the lite version and port any changes to the newer one.

If theres anything you'd like to see from the CV Variant, let me know and I'll put it up.

I hope to use CV Enhanced vs John III or in a 2x2 PBEM with us as Japan vs 2 Allied opponents to be named. I'm getting killed in our practice game of Guadalcanal as the Allies. A SC TF based around 2 BBs attack all four of my CV TF. Lesson - keep a SC TF with your CV TF when trouble is just around the corner.

So, I hope to be one of the first to take the CV mod out for a try.

Ah, in that case I'll do my best to get it out as soon as possible. I cant make any promises as to when since I'm going to be travelling for the next week or so, but hopefully by the end of the month.

And yes, SCTFs can do a number on CV's, I very nearly had the same happen to me in my BB Variant game.

Also, if you're planning on playing John III as the Japanese in CV Enhanced, I sincerely hope you're prepared for a beating given what I've seen of his games both here and on the WitP forum!

As for artwork, I can post some later tonight, but really its not a case of "big, brutal" CVs, but rather a LOT of them, and with some pretty serious AA for the Japanese to boot.

And with a lot I mean being able to bring close to 700 planes from 8 carriers over PH on Dec 7th if you bring all of Kidou Butai to play.

Besides being John's friend, I know his style very well, but giving him that many "toys" at start will make my job more difficult.

Rather than posting art work, I would rather see what the CV OOB is for both sides at start and through 42 will be.

Ill put up a list shortly, standby.

On another note, I saw your post in his recent AAR - if you do decide to use the CV Variant, I would be more than happy to create a modified version along the lines you proposed anyway. There is already a reasonable USN TF in the South Pacific like in BB Variant, and Kidou Butai begins in 2 TF's anyway for greater flexibility.

JAPANESE CARRIER OOB 41/42

2 x CV Amagi Class - Available Dec '41
36,000tons / 31 knots / 84 aircraft

2 x CV Shokaku Class - Available Dec '41
23,000tons / 32 knots / 81 aircraft

2 x CV Soryu Class - Available Dec '41
27,500tons / 33 knots / 90 aircraft

2 x CV Hiryu Class - Available Dec '41
27,500tons / 33 knots / 90 aircraft

2 x CV Junyo Class - Commissioned Mid '42
29,500tons / 33 knots / 96 aircraft

1 x CV Taiho Class - Commissioned Late '42
32,500tons / 32 knots / 75 aircraft

In addition, there are 2 CVLs;
1 Ryujo CVL / 15,000tons / 29 knots / 36 aircraft
1 Shinyo CVL / 16,500tons / 31 knots / 42 aircraft
Plus another 2 due to arrive through '42;
2 Junho CVL / 23,500tons / 30 knots / 60 aircraft

There is also 1 CVE;
1 Hosho CVE / 7,500tons / 25 knots / 18 aircraft
Plus another 2 due to arrive through '42;
2 Unyo CVE / 14,000tons / 23 knots / 27 aircraft

There are also conversions possibilties, which could amount to up to 6 more CVLs (~40 a/c) and 8 more CVEs (~25 a/c). I strongly recommend using a house rule to limit the number and availabilty of conversions.

UNITED STATES NAVY CARRIER OOB 41/42

2 x CV Lexington Class - Available Dec '41
37,500tons / 33 knots / 92 aircraft

2 x CV Wasp Class - 1 Available Dec '41 (1 stationed in the Atlantic - Arrives Mid '42)
16,500tons / 32 knots / 72 aircraft

3 x CV Yorktown Class - 1 Available Dec '41 (2 stationed in the Atlantic - 1 Arrives Early '42)
21,000tons / 32 knots / 86 aircraft

4 x CV Essex Class - 1 Available Dec '41 (3 Commisioned through '42)
27,500tons / 33 knots / 90 aircraft

The USN gets the following CVLs in late '42;
2 Independance CVL / 10,500tons / 31 knots / 30 aircraft (Cleveland conversion)

In addition, the USN begins with 1 CVE;
1 Langley CVE / 12,500tons / 16 knots / 28 aircraft
The USN also gets the following CVEs through '42;
1 Long Island CVE / 12,000tons / 16 knots / 16 aircraft
4 Sangamon CVE / 10,500tons / 18 knots / 31 aircraft
5 Bogue CVE / 9,500tons / 16 knots / 28 aircraft

The USN also has the opportunity to add via conversion a further 3 CVs (2 Lexington, 1 Iowa), 13 CVL (7 Omaha, 2 Wichita, 4 Cleveland) and several CVE.

SUMMARY
The situation in the pacific assuming no losses or conversions at Dec '41 and Dec '42 for the various navies is;
IJN 8 CV / 2 CVL / 1 CVE -> 11 CV / 4 CVL / 3 CVE
USN 5 CV / 0 CVL / 1 CVE -> 10 CV / 2 CVL / 11 CVE

'43 is when the party starts for the USN.

Some updates on the CV Variant;

Work on the IJN BB's, CV's and CA/CL's is done, and I should be done with the IJN DD's and SS's later tonight. With no Long Lance some of these units look rather different, which should make things interesting. I've also finished work on all the aircraft changes for both sides.

Things left to do include the USN changes, the RN changes (far less significant than the USN ones), and then the additional changes to both sides airgroups and LCU's.

I'm looking at having the scenario out early-mid next week if everything goes well.

Here's some Japanese artwork;
BB Ise (Post Fast BB Reconstruction)

BC Fuji

BB Yamato

CV Junyo

CA Tone

Maybe you will find this stupid, but I enjoy very much just looking at the stats and the picture of these new ships...
Waiting to start a whole new Japanese campaign, any advice for air production JuanG? Or I should explore it myself

Scenario 46, the Enhanced CV Variant is out!

This Scenario is version 12 - however, this update will not be made to the other scenarios due to ongoing work to revise them more completely. Some of these revisions made it into this version of the CV Variant, but the more extensive ones (armour and ammo reworking, etc) did not.

Scenario 46 - Enhanced CV Variant (Version 12)
RAR - http://www.fileden.com/files/2009/8/1/2529503//AltWNT_Scen46_v12.rar
ZIP - http://www.fileden.com/files/2009/8/1/2529503//AltWNT_Scen46_v12.zip

Ship Artwork (Version 12)
RAR - http://www.fileden.com/files/2009/8/1/2529503//AltWNT_ShipArt_v12.rar
ZIP - http://www.fileden.com/files/2009/8/1/2529503//AltWNT_ShipArt_v12.zip

This scenario should be rather different to the others, as the Japanese have some serious advantages from the start here. Of course, things get interesting in '43 when the allied carriers start showing up in large numbers, not to mention the amount of planes they get! Whatever the case, carnage is sure to ensue!

Thanks for the great work, JuanG. I would like to play it one day, but I'm not sure that I have the time for another PBEM, and, as I want to take command of Japanese Empire this time, finding opponents might be problematic (looking at ship availability, this scenario seems to be quite hard for Allies).

Nice work, but FatR has a point, not really a scenario that many allied players will like to play in a PBEM, a well it's the enhanced version for a reason.

Well, the allies still have a clear advantage after '42, but it will be somewhat harder than stock. However, while the IJN may look potentially powerful, they will not be able to build everything in the construction que unless they expand naval shipbuilding by some 500 (~35%) points, which will leave the economy weakened in other areas, and the Japanese really do not have much to spare here because of the HI needs of the extra pilot training.

However, it is intended to be harder than stock and as you said, it is the Enhanced variant - this scenario was intended to be the hardest for the allies when I started planning these.

Then again, considering the allies get 19 'Essex' type CVs and 5 Midways here, its not like they're short of firepower towards the end of the war either.

One of the issues may be that comparatively the allies are too strong in the BB Variants (atleast in terms of CVs), something that will change slightly once the new set of scenarios is done.

I would however have no problem in playing the allies in this version if anyone is looking for a game.

There is a new version of this due later today with a few minor bugfixes (like the F4U-4 group in '42 getting moved to '45 as intended).

Just extract the files to your AE folder - just make sure you also grab the art files for both the ships and aircraft, otherwise youll be looking at lots of empty battle screens.

I'm going through the scenario to try and catch any bugs, before I upload a "final" version here later today or tommorow. Ill base your 2x2 one on that.

Hello Juan,

I see your post on ammo. I am talking to jwe about this and may have some calculation for you soon. There is three different algorithms and two more shooting subroutines for every algorithm so it is not very easy but we can give a helpful showing of the play area if you are ok with matrix mathematics, and not the game company but how the play field is arranged

MO

This would be very much appreciated!

Thank you.

Updated version 12b of the Enhanced CV Variant is out.

This will be the 'final' version unless someone finds more bugs with it, atleast until I can finished development for the Mk2 AltWNT scenarios. I will be looking to release these all at once, or maybe as pairs BB/CV and BBE/CVE. I am also looking at doing a 'stock' variant again to include some of the 'new' features, such as ammo and armour revisions. I -may- also do an 'enhanced' style stock scenario if you guys would like.

I am also looking into writing a 'original' (or atleast somewhat different) AI script for these, as well as providing 'AI friendly' versions for both Allied and Japanese sides. Because of this, future scenarios will probably be numbered as follows - 4x for PBEM variant, 5x for Allied AI variants (IJ player) and 6x for Japanese AI variants (Allied player). So 42, 52, 62 will be the BB Variant in various formats. I am looking into some of the ideas used in the Ironman scenarios to give the AI a slightly stronger edge.

I am also trying to document everything this time. Its not one of my strong points, but I will do my best. When the time comes to release these I will probably open a new thread for them, as this 13 page monster may not be the most user-friendly since half of it is design proposals from before anything was released!

Here are the scenario files;

Scenario 46 - Enhanced CV Variant (Version 12b)

Nothing major;

-Corrected the F4U-1D group that was arriving in '42 to '45 as intended
-Corrected spelling of USS Intrepid
-Moved CVL Shinyo to Badeldaob Air Combat TF, she was left in Hiroshima by accident in the last version

JuanG,
Thanks for thi high quality work you have put into these mods.

What is the projected time frame for MkII? I'm only asking because I want to start a PBEM as sonn as my life settles down and I was wondering if I should wait for MkII.

If anybody is playing the Ultimate BB, I'm curious as to how it is playing. While it goes into the realm of fantasy, I always thought that a game that started out as more of a surface combat war like War Plan Orange but evolved into a carrier war would make for interesting game play and present the player with a very different set of problems to work out.

For now, I'm trying out Ironman Allied to get familiar with changes to Japanese production since my days with WITP RHS.

Juan many thanks again . CV Enhanced is indeed very hard as the Allied player . Lost Hornet and Enterprise on 7th/8th December because the KB stuck around a while . C'est la vie. Great work.
