Loking at the units still on the map the fight for aerial supremacy will be at least as hot as the shipping war. I need that Jet event to fire soon....

I am really enjoying reading these! I have a question though: I am trying to figure out how to get the game again. I bought digital download a while back and then deployed to Iraq where I had to fomat my PC. I really would love to play this game again, how can I download it without having to buy it again?

I believe if you registered the game or perhaps still have the email receipt you can download again. After you looked into these possibilities, then contact Matrix's customer service.

Due to more than one major blunder I choose to resign. The first was losing a huge portion of the Russian army in Maikop. The second one involved a major loss to the US Pacific fleet. I hope Art posts the rest so you can see for yourself.

Final thoughts
I don't know why but I kept forgetting to invest in ASW. Because of that my DD's were behind the curve and the result was to much Allied tonnage at the bottom of the sea. On the other hand, my early penatration of the DEI was looking good. While Japan camped at Pearl Harbor, the US went low and managed to get a nice foothold in the DEI. This move cut Japan off from some of its resources. The US then stationed plenty of fighters nearby to provide CAP. This was working good for a few turns but then I moved a little to close to Japan. It turned into a turkey shoot because I miscalculated Japan's counterattack strength. If I remember right, I lost 5 or 6 out of 8 of my CAG. To add insult to injury, the remainder was completely cut off without supply. The following turn would have sent the rest of the entire Pacific fleet to the bottom. Any further resistance to Japan's empire was squashed. There was not enough time remaining to build a new CV fleet to make any difference. Because of my miscalculation Japan would have the rest of 1945 and 46 to do as she pleased. Rather than play out the next 7 turns with nothing going on in the Pacific I choose to resign at this point.

Back to my first blunder. Backing my southern army into Maikop seemed like a good idea at the time, but it soon became apparent that this does not work well under the map we used here. I decided the map needed some revision because of this. What we have now in version 1.02 of Deluxe AWD addresses this weakness. If we had been using 1.02's map, the Russia army in Maikop could have directly linked up with the army in Stalingrad, and I could have shifted units back and forth between these two territories as needed. But that was not to be the case in this game. After losing such a huge army I had to postpone building my planned fighter screen and instead switch back to an almost exclusive infantry build. This did save the Urals from getting overrun, but left Russia wide open to aircraft bombing. This was a constant drain on Russia's economy, but at least I stopped Germany at Stalingrad. With Russia's economy in ruins, because I lacked a fighter screen, there really was not much hope that Russia could conquer Germany within a decent time frame. My hopes laid with the US's early penetration of the DEI. I was about a year ahead of schedule there since I never had to bother with Guadalcanal, Rubaul, or Truk. But once the US fleet got hammered the clock was no longer on my side, or even talking to me for that matter. Both Germany and Japan were in too good of a position to hold out till 1947. Hence my surrender.

I hope Art chooses to post the remaining turns since they are pretty interesting.

Fall 1943 – After a long “happy time” the first Uboat is sunk- It took 6 DDs and an auto hit to sink the elite boat, signs of a turning tide? 8 remaining boats will keep up the pressure. Heavy bombardments of factories in W. France.

The Wallies have heavily upgraded their CAGs but they are still behind the Japanese ones in EV and AA. A safe bet a good portion of Allied RPs will go there in the next few turns...

Few movements by the Russians, Germany pulls back from Voronesh and reinforces Belorussia. With all rail leading into Minsk destroyed and no direct reinforcements an opportunity for an attack at favourable odds looms in Winter unless Jesse pulls the Minsk Army back. Edit: at least it seemed like an opportunity...

Not much action from the Japanese either, they pull their Navy back to the Yellow Sea and wait for an opportunity to strike at the advancing Allies.

Winter 1944 – As it seems I was blinded by the Russian snow. Jesse pulled out a good one trapping my Belorussia Army. Unfortunately all my HBs are also sitting in the pocket so I will need a turn to supply it – if the troops survive an attack.

The US Carrier fleet has advanced into the Gulf of Siam, invading Java and French Indochina. In addition, Shanghai was retaken by the Chinese. All together terrible news for the Axis...

As most German troops find themselves trapped, the African adventure has to be aborted and all available troops are moved to Romania, Hungary and the Maikop group moves West. After the invasion in Summer 1942 Russian troops will clear the Caucasus from any German occupants in Spring 1944. I am curious if there will be anything standing between the Red Army and Berlin next turn... The Kharkov group receives full advance supplies just in case Jesse cuts it off too. But the prospect of reestablishing connection through either Kursk, Kiev or E. Poland to the besieged troops left me with little choice than to take another chance.

This turn already Axis production has dropped down to 42 due to another Allied air strike on E. France. 10+ HBs and TacAir blast a region to pieces turn after turn now.

The Allied CVs are not protected by Fighters for one moment and promptly the Japanese Fleet reacts, attacking with several HBs and TacAir as support. The result is very encouraging. The US CAGs got confused by the land based aircraft and allowed the Japanese CAGs to hit and sink half of the Carrier fleet! The counterstrike was just a small payback leaving the CV/CAG count at 4/4 for Japan and 5/4 for the Allies. The Japanese superior CAGs really made a difference, aided by 2 autohits by land based bombers...

The remaining US CVs being quite exposed I do to Jesse’s fleet what he did to my troops in Russia – cutting them off. Japanese BBs form a ring between the CV fleet and any supply source. Java and Celebes are retaken by Japan to further isolate the US fleet. I hope Japan has just gained a few more turns...

Spring 1944 – As Jesse gave up at this point the game came to an end here. With the situation in Europe yet undecided but somewhat leaning towards the Allies due to most of the German Army trapped and possibly destroyed in Russia Jesse felt unable to defeat Japan in time for an overall Allied victory.

I concur with Jesse that while the Russian map we played on was already much harder for the Axis the new changes (as in V1.02) will balance the areas better and allow for a tight battle in Russia instead of athe usual Blitz encountered much to often particularly in GG4.040.

In our game several times auto hits comprised the spice in the soup (admittedly in favour of the Axis at times). Much like historical ups and downs there were tragic misery and heroic successes but at a level where such adventures of luck feel not too powerful.

I think our game has very well demonstrated that you may never feel safe as several times exposed units got cut off or nearly so. Not sure if the stock game and the GG mod allow for a similar variety of moves and suspenseful events.
Overall an excellent mod and welcome addition to the pool of AWD scenarios.

I hope Jesse continues to polish AWD deluxe until we might end up at AWD FOREVER or something...

Thanks for the AAR Arthur, very illustrative, I really must try this scenario, I might give it a try against the AI to get the feeling for the new map and then ask somebody to play.

Good AAR, especially to tell us never forget to bring bullets and foods with your troops.

Bump.
Hopefully after reading an AAR and with the new patch that allows pbem++ people will become interested in this game again.
