asdicus,

you most probably tried to load an old save file with the new WitpStaff.
The save file format between 1080 and 1083 changed. You don't notice it because WitpAE compensates for it but WitpStaff does notice it. Therefore

WitpStaff from 1083 can only read WitpAE save files from 1083
WitpStaff from 1080 can only read save files from 1080 and 1079.

If you want to be able to still read old save files, copy (move will not work) your tools/witpstaff directory before patching. With the copied version you will be able to read the old files, with the patched version the new ones.

Also WitpStaff's internal database format changed (that's why you got error message cantona). You have to delete old WitpStaff's databases (easiest by deleting the generated subdirectory) before starting V0.7b (Patch 1083) WitpStaff or you will see the same error message as cantona. Sorry that it appears only in the log file and not as a pop-up window but at that point in time WitpStaff's GUI is not yet intialized.

jcjordan,
yes, the Event tabs is a stepchild. I don't really use it (as I never came to writing an example log file parser which could then be expanded by someone of you). But I really thought I had that date calculation finally fixed. Argl!

Woos, will witpstaff updates (like the .07a update) be separate from or a part of the offical witpae patches?

I started a new DB and when I load a new savegame dec. 7th or 8th - it always ends witp staff immediately!

Historiker,

You need to go to the Microsoft site as per the instructions in the (updated) first post of this thread and install the C++ security patch.

It will work then.

(See post 84)

I had to delete the databases and rebuild them after I installed the beta patch in order for witpstaff to work.  plus I had to get the C++ security patch to get it working the first time

jcjordan,

The 0.7a is part of the 0.7b included in the Beta patch 1. I put 0.7a into this thread because a) several people had problems with the "Unknown Base" problem and to test whether there were any problems in. Note that 0.7b is more than 0.7a

Q-Ball, It might be a too old Java version. I think I upped the requirement from 1.4 compatible to 1.5 compatible (given the fact that 1.6 is out for years now). You might want to install a new Java version if you up to now always ignored the "update available" pop-ups of Java.
Other than that I have no idea because the error you see is before WitpStaff even is given control of the Java VM.

Hanzberger,
please look at post one of this thread to see what to do in case of Integrity Constraint violations and how to write a useful bug report.

Streptokok,
sure you installed the correct MS files/updates? The Java VM complains about the msvcrt.dll which is one of the dlls installed by the file from the Microsoft site.

Thanks for the feedback Woos. I upgraded Java. The error messages I received are gone. WITP Staff will not start however; after "press any key", nothing.

Q-ball, it sounds like you didn't get the security upgrade. Go to the first post of the thread and find the link. I just went through that myself.

Is this the bug report you need? I went in game and don't see anything I can do as per directions in fact that part of the directions doesn't really make sense to me. I'm suppose to alter the game (somehow) so STAFF can work??
Checked the folder, there is a parent ship class, went into that but I really don't know what I am looking at.
The only thing I came up with is that Kaga is the first ship listed if you open up the ship database in game. OK>>>>>>and that means?

Hi-Rather than cycle through 108 answers, I'll ask my question here.

I remember a post early on that stated WitpStaff problems would be fixed in the awaited patch( not Beta). Is this still correct?

Thanks, Hugh Browne

Q_ball,
see witpstaff.log .

Streptokok,
Do you maybe run Vista 64 and thus need the vcredist_x64.exe update? Did WitpStaff work for you before the beta patch or did you try it now for the first time (i.e. did you have the old redistributable libraries before applying Microsoft's servicepack)? You basically have a problem with msvcrt.dll which is somehow wrong and I can't help there.

Hanzberger,
did you change the scenario before playing? Which scenario are you playing? Did you get errors during database initialization?
What happens is that WitpStaff is trying to add Kaga into its database but the "Kaga" class is not there. Since furthermore Kaga is the very first ship in the save file I guess that no class is there, i.e. that you had a problem during WitpStaff database initialization and somehow wiggled around deleting and reinitializing the database so that you now have a half-initalized database (I would be interested in how you did that because in principle WitpStaff should prevent that). Try deleting the "db/" directory you created with witpStaff and Initialize a new database.
BTW, WitpStaff.log is an ASCII file. You do not have to screenshot it.

hbrsvl,
Interesting, who said that? And which specific problem does this refere to? You are aware that WitpStaff is a volunteer project.

Hi all

I have had problems getting WitP Staff to run since launch. More specifically, it has never ran. I am running 64 bit Vista and I have no doubt that this is the problem.

I am looking at starting with a clean install once the non-beta patch comes out. But, I dont want to screw up WitP Staff trying to get it to even run.

I know its a lot to ask, but what do I need to do with a clean install to get WitP Staff to run on 64 bit Vista?

I read through the threads in here and, as far as I can tell, the problems others are having are unrelated to mine. Again, this may very well be user error, and I may just be missing something, but I have spent the last 30 minutes trying to get it to work with no success. Again, it wont even run.

When I do try to run it says:

'Press and key to continue . . .' and after doing so, it closes. No errors, no nothing. It just closes. I dont know if this is related, but I copied this from the WitPStaff.log file:

quote:

config.directory is .
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: Cannot load 32-bit SWT libraries on 64-bit JVM

Again, sorry to be a pain. But I cant get this to run on my own.

Thanks in advance.

Chad

Because they are averages per day, and the production number is the average per month. For example, if you have an engine factor that's a 15, it will on average produce an engine every other day and so you should see 0.5 (give or take depending on what the length of a month is assumed to be)

I get a CTD when trying to load a savefile.
Have installed beta patch and deleted old db and initialized a new.
Am loading a savegame from patch 1083.
I get the various messages concerning units attached to non-existent hqs and such and then the CTD.
With this message left in the DOS-window:

Hi Woos,

there seems to be an error in your Assault Value calculation if I am not mistaken.
It is mostly correct but for example all Chinese units in Hex 82,47 have a higher Assault Value in your lcustatuscsv.csv than in the game. example: Unit 7572: csv-260 game-233

This is with the beta Patch installed and before Turn 1.

Thank you for your very helpful tool.
Marc

Chad,

I really like all the problems the different Windows versions cause.
In principle you have two options:
a) Get the 64bit Version of the SWT library from e.g. http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/download.php?file=/eclipse/downloads/drops/R-3.5-200906111540/swt-3.5-win32-win32-x86_64.zip, unzip it and overwrite the swt.jar file in WitpStaff's directory with the one from the zip file. Although I fear your next problem then will be the .dlls which are 32 bit also.
b) Install a 32 bit version of Java on your computer (should be possible to do in addition to the 64bit version you already have) and use that to run WitpStaff (you will need to edit the witpStaff.bat file by adding the absolute path to the 32-bit java.exe into it).

a) looks easier to me but might not work and you might need to repeat it if a WitpAE patch updates the swt.jar file. Please give feedback on what worked and what not so I can put a summary in the first post.
You knew what you were up to when you selected the 64bit version, weren't you?

Nux,
That must be a bug in WitpStaff, please send savefile etc. (as mentioned in first post). You are going to get my e-mail address.
*edit* You aren't trying to load a small scenario, are you? I still want the save file to have look at the problem, but there is no support for the small scenarios as they have serious problems with HQs.

Briny,
what is the end of witpStaff.log? Please use common sense when selecting what is relevant to that problem (i.e. don't post the whole log file like Nux tried).
BTW just a minor niggle. You didn't have a CTD. WitpStaff and java quit themselve a little bit hastily but didn't crash and even printed log messages. If you want to know how a java CTD looks like, look at post 103 and 108.

Marc,
my AV value calculation is a very rough estimate (I don't know the official formula). I think I just count squads but seemingly there is some additional factor in WitpAE. This divergence is the reason why the "AV vs. garrison requirement" display show an orange warning if AV is in a 5% range around the garrison requirement. The actual AV in game might be different and thus cause a lack (or no lack) of garrison.
