Burma
We hit the Japanese advance guard near Pegu for reasonable effect and no loss.

If it carries bombs it flew this turn against Malaca, combined with fighter sweeps we lost a couple of planes, but shot down a lot more and have almost closed the field.

The defences at Malaca held OK:

Ground combat at Kuala Lumpur (49,79)

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 12726 troops, 78 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 575

Defending force 10287 troops, 121 guns, 116 vehicles, Assault Value = 248

Japanese adjusted assault: 325

Allied adjusted defense: 457

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 2 (fort level 3)

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), forts(+), experience(-)
Attacker: shock(+)

3rd HK&S Light AA Regiment
109th RAF Base Force
137/155th Field Regiment

Enemey air also hit the Malacca defences, but they should hold and we may get there in time to clear a route to the rear...

Phillipines
Our P-40's again hit the enemy at Lingayen, causing light damage. Experiance continues to grow but the enemy is massing (around 10-12 units now) and ships are unloading at Aparrii. Manila is building nicely and soon it will be time to withdraw.

The Japanese continue to clean up the southern Phillipines.

Borneo
Miri has stacks of shipping so the air launced several strikes, but Zero's protect the shipping and we loose planes to no effect.

Tarakan now has several Brit BF and forces evacuated from the Phillipines, these are being flown back to the rear.

DEI
No real change, our Hudsons continue to gain experiance from bombing the trapped SNLF at Sorong (we sank all their shipping sevral days ago).

SWPAC
Surprisingly not follow-on air attacks against PM. Our planes don't fly due to damage, but we will be able to evacuate more. Continue to fly in troops, upton an AV of about 170.

A sub attacks but misses a large number of stupport ships moving into Truk.

Pacific

No action.

China
The Japanese continue to clean up.

Analysis
Overall a good turn for us. Kuala Lumpur holding was nice and our massed air did good over malacca.

I expect KB to come back in a few turns in the SWPAC escorting the PM invasion forces. I doubt we can delay much longer here, but I feel the mainland is secure enough.

Fleets are conentrating the the DEI at Koepang, and a US CV is near Perth , with a second to follow soon. With Darwin secure and stacks of fuel and supply we have a solid foundation to work with in this area... unles KB comes a knocking!

Cheers

Well we got the turn and did the moves.

The important bit at the moment is Malaya, after a lot of discussion we have decided to try to get Malaca back. We have plenty of supply at Kuala Lumpur, and should hold a couple of turns. The eneemy has railed forces down the flank, we hope to catch them with air this turn and cause lots of casualties.

There are 3 units there now, but I suspect they are just fragments... a 4th is on the way.

We are trying to cut off the cebntral axis by moving forces behind them.

Wosr case is we loos a couple of hundred AV, but this is unlikley to cause much more delay anyway.

Singapore should make lvl 4 forts soon and has plenty of supply.

The nexty turn will be interesting...

Cheers

Rob

7-8 Jan - Death of a 1000 Sallies...

This turn was all about the air, with lots of stuff flying all over the map.

AIR
In a turn that has the AFB fan boys grinning, and the JFB's holding their groins we done good in the air:

Japanese aircraft
Ki-21-Ic Sally x 25

Allied aircraft
H81-A3 x 22

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-21-Ic Sally: 11 destroyed, 1 damaged

Japanese aircraft
Ki-21-Ic Sally x 24
Ki-21-IIa Sally x 14

Allied aircraft
Buffalo I x 14

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-21-Ic Sally: 1 destroyed, 5 damaged
Ki-21-IIa Sally: 5 destroyed, 2 damaged

Japanese aircraft
Ki-21-Ic Sally x 25
Ki-21-IIa Sally x 103
Ki-43-Ib Oscar x 29

Allied aircraft
Buffalo I x 2

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-21-IIa Sally: 2 damaged

Japanese aircraft
Ki-21-Ic Sally x 20
Ki-21-IIa Sally x 5

Allied aircraft
Buffalo I x 19

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-21-Ic Sally: 9 destroyed, 2 damaged
Ki-21-IIa Sally: 1 destroyed

We also did good hitting the enemy at Malacca:
Allied aircraft
Blenheim I x 5
Blenheim IV x 15
Buffalo I x 15
Hudson I x 21
Wirraway x 3
B-17D Fortress x 14

Allied aircraft losses
Blenheim I: 1 damaged
Blenheim IV: 3 damaged
Hudson I: 2 damaged
B-17D Fortress: 1 damaged

Japanese ground losses:
444 casualties reported
Squads: 1 destroyed, 19 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 26 disabled
Engineers: 1 destroyed, 3 disabled
Guns lost 12 (0 destroyed, 12 disabled)
Vehicles lost 2 (0 destroyed, 2 disabled)

In Burma we hit the enemy advance guard hard again. That poor battalion will be in a bad way at the moment. All good experiance! Now if Chrchill would just send us a few more sqadrons and newer aircraft we could really do good!

Ground

We are likley to loose Kuala Lumpur next turn as they have over 1400 AV vs our 200 there now. Not sure what is at Malacca yet, but at least an Inf regt and the raiders. This certainly was a nice move, didn't realise the next turn they would be able to rail in like that :(

A bit of action in China as they continue to clear out the lines.

Subs
A bit of action, we loose an AM but that is about it.

Analysis
We are in a pause before the next lot of Japanese operations. Port Moresby hasn't been attacked again and should be capable of conducting air ops this turn. KB has probably retired to Truk, the question is will it come back sth or go elsewhere...

The loss of around 30 Sallies will really hurt. In particular this will limit their ability to bomb Singapore, and in Burma. They are obviously saving their Netties... but may need to commit them soon (they are using some in the Phillipines).

We have no indications on where they are going next.

If it wasn't for the Malacca attack I'd have considered that we had done real good in Malaya... but we are now only doing just ok...

Cheers

Subs

Three launches, three hits, three duds :( Even an S boat against the CL Natori fails to go bang...

Burma
No change, still hitting the advanced guard with air, bringing in supply and shipping out fuel.

Malaya
We hit the enemy at Kuala Lumpur with air over the two days against little opposition:

Japanese aircraft
Ki-27b Nate x 2

Allied aircraft
Blenheim I x 6
Blenheim IV x 6
Hudson I x 16
Wirraway x 3
B-17D Fortress x 18

No Japanese losses

Allied aircraft losses
Blenheim I: 1 damaged
Hudson I: 2 damaged
B-17D Fortress: 1 damaged

Japanese ground losses:
122 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 3 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 16 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 2 (0 destroyed, 2 disabled)
Vehicles lost 13 (0 destroyed, 13 disabled)

The Japanese respond, but to far less effect.

Then the attack...
Ground combat at Kuala Lumpur (49,79)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 38713 troops, 323 guns, 32 vehicles, Assault Value = 1434

Defending force 9657 troops, 122 guns, 119 vehicles, Assault Value = 216

Japanese adjusted assault: 735

Allied adjusted defense: 309

Japanese assault odds: 2 to 1 (fort level 3)

Japanese Assault reduces fortifications to 2

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), forts(+), preparation(-), experience(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
599 casualties reported
Squads: 2 destroyed, 34 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 25 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Allied ground losses:
1118 casualties reported
Squads: 17 destroyed, 93 disabled
Non Combat: 24 destroyed, 113 disabled
Engineers: 2 destroyed, 8 disabled
Guns lost 2 (0 destroyed, 2 disabled)
Vehicles lost 29 (25 destroyed, 4 disabled)

And the counter:

Ground combat at Kuala Lumpur (49,79)

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 6521 troops, 87 guns, 51 vehicles, Assault Value = 143

Defending force 49018 troops, 339 guns, 506 vehicles, Assault Value = 1385

Japanese ground losses:
224 casualties reported
Squads: 1 destroyed, 15 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 11 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 2 (0 destroyed, 2 disabled)

Not looking great, but OK... overnight the forts rebuild to level 3 (we have lots of engineers and supply)

Ground combat at Kuala Lumpur (49,79)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 37904 troops, 323 guns, 32 vehicles, Assault Value = 1380

Defending force 7976 troops, 113 guns, 92 vehicles, Assault Value = 143

Japanese adjusted assault: 272

Allied adjusted defense: 123

Japanese assault odds: 2 to 1 (fort level 3)

Japanese Assault reduces fortifications to 2

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), forts(+), experience(-)
Attacker: disruption(-)

Japanese ground losses:
507 casualties reported
Squads: 2 destroyed, 23 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 28 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 1 (0 destroyed, 1 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
1545 casualties reported
Squads: 17 destroyed, 47 disabled
Non Combat: 19 destroyed, 100 disabled
Engineers: 4 destroyed, 8 disabled
Guns lost 6 (2 destroyed, 4 disabled)
Vehicles lost 27 (16 destroyed, 11 disabled)

and again at the end of the turn the forts rebuild... so another two days of precious delay.

Over Malaca we send in the fighters and loose about 1:1 for Buffalo to Oscars, not great but not bad either!

Phillipines

Action down south as they continue to clean up, but Luzon sees no action (our fighters don't fly either). They have 12 units oustide of Clark, but Clark has 500AV and 3 forts... they advance from the south as well... looks like a few more days before we need to pull back to Manila... they are waiting for more force and probably trying to bluff us into falling back.

DEI
No change, they are evacuating out of Sorong, our torps fail to hit the xAK, and our air prefers to continue the destruction of the ground troops:

Afternoon Air attack on Bandasan SNLF, at 82,107 (Sorong)

Weather in hex: Overcast

Raid spotted at 29 NM, estimated altitude 9,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 9 minutes

Allied aircraft
139WH-3 x 3
Hudson I x 6

Allied aircraft losses
Hudson I: 1 damaged

Japanese ground losses:
116 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 8 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 1 (1 destroyed, 0 disabled)

SWPAC

All quiet.

Port Moresby is now operational again.

China
We continue to be forced back, Japanese arty cause large numbers of casualties :( Chusien, is in danger at the moment.

Australia
Two US baseforces and the 8th Marines are unloading in Sydney.

Sigint

Sigint indicates forces moving to Davao in the Phillipines and large forces at Rahaeng in Thailand. Also large volume of radio traffic at Truk, this usually indicates the KB.

Analysis
We have really robbed them of momentum in Malaya, and they continue to be cautious in the Philipines. Not sure if they have siphoned off forces for elsewhere... Maybe SWPAC. KB apparently remains at Truk, it has been ther for a few days... maybe waiting for forces?

Cheers

Rob

11-12 Jan 1942

Subs
The subs are again active, but largely ineffective (we hit 1 xAK near Davao). One of ours hits a mine while searching for shipping near Hakodate... it should get home OK.

Burma
No change. Continue to hit forces building outside Pegu. We have begun the evacuation of Rangoon, the civilian population is going mad, rioting in the streets and digging up the airfield to grow vegetables.

Malaya
Pretty ugly for both sides :)

We loose Kuala Lumpur and all 9 units are destroyed in place.

Lots of air to air combat, overall we do good, but our fighter force is being whittled away. They loos more Sally and Lily's but their fighter force is beginning to be more effective. We are trying to be cunning and hit where they have fewer fighters, concentrating on the ground troops in order to disrupt and slow the advance. Our remaining ground units are pulling back just in front of the advancing Japanese. Singapore is around 80% to lvl 4 forts.

Philippines
the last defenders on Mindanao fall. On Luzon the Japanese are holding off waiting for reinforcements. the question now is timing for us, when do they have the force (or are they bluffing and in the process of deploying elsewhere), and when do we fall back on Manila. Manila has about 700Av, to the south is about 400, and Clark and nth of Manila about 500 each. Forts are at or near 3, with manila heading to 4. I'm evacuating key elements by air, and the occasional ship.

DEI

No real change Moving troops via air, striping fuel and supply in advance and consolidating.

Our bombers at Ambon continue to gain experience hitting ground troops at Sorong.

SWPAC

All quiet. PM almost ready for offensive operations again. More supply on the way.

Australia

US Reinforcements only a turn or two away now, baseforces, engineers and aircraft.

China
Trying to hit where we can, and suffer bombardments where we can't. Tsiaotso falls.

Analysis

No Change

Subs
If only this had come off....

ASW attack near Gebe at 80,104

Japanese Ships
CV Akagi
CV Kaga
BB Kirishima
CA Chikuma
CL Abukuma
DD Hamakaze
DD Akigumo
DD Oboro
DD Kasumi
DD Arare
DD Tanikaze

Allied Ships
SS Porpoise

Lots of sub attacks with no real success, except for :

Sub attack near Pearl Harbor at 182,103

Japanese Ships
SS I-9

Allied Ships
xAP President Tyler, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
AP Henderson
xAP President Taylor
xAP President Fillmore
DD Smith
DD Perkins

A returning TF runs over a sub, she should make port...

Burma
No Change. Forces continue to build up outside Pegu.

Malaya

See picture below.

In the air the Japanese fighter defences are improving, our guys are getting tired, and it is almost time to pull out. Singapore is 88% to level 4 though, so may have to hold in another turn or two to keep the pressure off the fort building.

Philippines
No Change.

DEI

KB (at least part) comes to play north of Ambon, sinking two xAKL at Ambon. Wisely the bombers at Ambon don't fly against KB. We will now flee our surface combat forces and shipping in the area as it looks to become unhealthy!

SWPAC
Offensive ops begin at PM with the bombing of Lae. With KB identified we will increase the fighters and bombers here.

Australia
US forces are unloaded/ing including:

110th US BF
101 USN BF
8th Marines
VMF-211 (Wildcat)
VMSB -232 (SBD1)

Also P-40E arrive.

Aircraft will move to PM. Ground forces to Townsville.

We will flee shipping from Darwin with KB in the area.

Analysis
Keep away from KB! (well at least 2 CV identified so far)

We have an opportunity to strike from PM and get in supply, which we will take.

Cheers

Rob

15-16 Jan.

Ok this is a big, important, interesting and lucky turn!

First as a Cavalry officer Tony is barely literate, and therefore tends not to post here... although he does read it to see what I'm thinking/doing. Last turn we noticed at least part of KB in the DEI. At the time Tony had large surface forces (Brit, Dutch and one or two US ships) at Sorebaya. I had two large SCTF at Darwin. I almost sent mine to join his... but instead decided to play safe and move to Broome. Tony, using his 6th sense (as I've noted before he is a lucky bastard, mainly cause he has good instincts and listens to them), thinks (but doesn't tell me!) that the KB may try a raid on Sorebaya...

Near Sinkawang we also saw some surface forces moving, again Tony listens to his instincts and puts the entire allied airforce in Singapore and Batavia on Naval strike...

Below is the full AAR for the turn, so you can see the resultant carnage on both sides...

I will post the analysis in the next message.

I like having Tony on my team :) Actually team games are good when you can work together and complement each other.

Enemy Intentions
The enemy intends landing at Palembang with strong ground troops lifted from the nth coast of Borneo (Miri and maybe Kuching) with forces bought direct from within the Empire. This is a strong bold move. As a consequence there are at least 3 large AP's currently unloading at Palembang, however the follow-on forces, and surface combat covering forces have suffered disruption from air attacks

In support of that KB has attempted to destroy the known Allied fleet that was based at Sorebaya. This failed when the fleet moved just in time.

Likely Enemy Future moves
He has two options, continue with his operation to take Palembang, or retire.

He is likely to continue with his operation because he has forces at Palembang and he has KB in supporting range. This is our assessed most likely and most dangerous for us, so the course of action we will plan against.

The alternative is he will retire to nth coast of Borneo, and the KB back to the Philippines. We assess this to be unlikely.

We expect KB to rush from its location 6-7 hexes east of Sorebaya to a location vicinity Batavia to try and intercept our fleet from the air, cover the landings with LRCAP. We expect him to do this along the "inland sea"" area, rather than via the Indian Ocean (but we are preparing for both. Likely to also launch air attack on Batavia.

We expect the bulk of the landing forces, with the remaining (or another undetected) covering force to move to Palembang to support and cover the landings.

We expect enemy air in Malaya (who was remarkably quiet last turn) to launch a massed raid on Singapore (which JUST received LVL4 forts!) in an effort to disrupt and destroy our airforce, if not in day one at least day two and beyond.

Friendly Plan
We will "go for it"!

The surface combat fleets vicinity of Batavia (which should be fully fuelled and armed) will drive on Palembang in an effort to sink the invasion fleets. This force is Brit and Dutch CL's and a variety of DD's. While over matched by the Japanese CA's the Japanese fleet has suffered some damage, and largely appears to be out of secondary armament... so while a 50/50 call it is probably the best we can hope for.

On the air side if it carries things that "go bang" it will be launched in an effort to hit the shipping. Singapore and Batavia will not be defended.

The surface fleet will attempt to flee up the straits of Malacca afterwards, heading back is certain death, heading north we may get lucky (depending on the location of the enemy Netties, which were largely based out of Saigon...).

While we are likely to loose most of the fleet this is the best chance we will get. We still have a strong CA based fleet in reserve so the DEI is not completely undefended... In fact that may move back to Darwin now in anticipation of enemy invasions in the east DEI, and then back to Brisbane via the north.

Elsewhere PM is back up and running, and we will move more forces there while KB is elsewhere. 5000 supply should be mostly unloaded by now, bringing the base up to about 30,000 and an AV of about 180.

The big unknown is Mini KB. It is either in the South China Sea (unlikely) or in the vicinity of Truk/Rabaul.

Cheers

Rob

Analysis 17-18 Jan

A resounding success! We largely destroy the Japanese invasion forces and sink some importanat ships. The sunk list is at least the following, with probably many more.

CL 1 (Tama) (2 more badly damaged)
DD 4 (Hasu, Samidare, Asumkumo, Yuachi)
PB 3 (Shuko, Shonan, Fuji)
SC 1 (ch8)
DMS 1 (probable)
LSD 1 (an important one!)
AP 2 (maybe another 1-2)
AK 7
xAKL 1

We loose (so far)
CL 3 (Tromp, De Ryter, Marblehead)
DD 2 (Whipple and Edwards) but have a number damaged.

By going up the "inland" channel to Palembang we avoided the strong Japanese SCTF who were the distant covering force.

Importantly we get AP's and the LSD which will limit Japanese options in the future.

Our ships are now fleeing north...

Singapore is now untenable though so the air will have to pull back.

In the DEI KB remains to protect the invasions of Kendari/Ambon and probably Koepang. As usual when you think of 2 enemy courses of action they choose a third. The allied fleets have returned to Darwin, so I am in a position to interfere with the landing at Ambon... but will have to flee to the Australian East coast afterwards. They should have the intel now that Koepang has the two Indian Brigades.

In the SWPAC PM is open for business, and has been resupplied. Lots of aircraft are arriving in theatre.

Cheers

Rob

Well we have the turn.

We lost 2 CL and 2 DD, have a CL badly damaged and 3 DD damaged, one heavy but should survive.

After the awesome Dutch/UK victory (and the loss of USS Marblehead) the US commander at Darwin is going to attempt to ambush the forces moving to Ambon (which includes at least one CA).

The USN force is:
CA Houston
CL Boise
CL Ceres (UK)
6 DDs (Ford, Parrot. Peary, Pillsbury, Pope, Stewart).

Below is the path we plan to take as KB is off the Eastern side of Koepang. The TF will retire on Brisbane.

This shows the enemy TF in the area and where we are going. Not many subs :(

The Hudsons at Ambon will remain to fight for one more turn then escape.

Cheers

Our loss is acceptable for the destruction of these forces! We loose two DD's to Betty during the day, and sink most of the rest of the enemy TF from the air as well.

We counterattack the force landed at Palembang getting 3:1 odds, but loose more troops than we destroy.

Phillipines
Luzon FINALLY heats up. First comes the air where in a series of combats we loose 3-5 P-40 and claim a Zero, 4 Nate, 5 Lily.

On the ground they attack at Cabanatuan at 1:2 oddds (Fort 3) taking 1600 casualties to our 600.

At Clark they drop the forts to 2 but still have 1:3 odds and take 2300 casualties to 700.

Both lots of ground forces are conducting a fightering withdrawal on Manila

East DEI
This really heats up!

Our planes attack the infasion Tf's to no effect...

Meanwhile KB hits Darwin (didn't realise I'd left so many ships there :(

Weather in hex: Thunderstorms

Raid detected at 40 NM, estimated altitude 13,000 feet.

Again the Japanese go deep with an attack on Lautum simultaneous to Ambon and Kendari!

Elsewhere our subs sink a TK :)

PM lanuches strikes on Lae and Buna.

20 Jan 1942 (day two)

The action is mostly in the easts DEI.

Sumatra

East DEI
Strong surface forces enter Kendari sweeping mines, in the case of DD Amatsukaze she uses her hull... probably won't survive...

They then bombard Kendari for little effect (not that there is much there!)

Analysis

We will probably loose all the ships from the US TF that hit Ambon, but it was worth it!

Between that and hitting the 2 CA off Singapore the Japanese force has been heavily attrited for moderate loss.

I was lazy at Darwin, should have moved the ships out, Tony I'm sorry :(

darwin has no fighter defences (they are still forming at Alice Springs) but we do have some spare strike aircraft...

Joe and Nik tried to cover their forces by hitting the potential staging bases... and almost succeed. In the long run they lost two invasion TF though because while they were striking they weren't covering and we managed to slip forces in.

Their simultaneous ops also spread their forces too thin.

An expensive lesson for the Empire...

Thoughts
The one key div that we have been wondering on its location, the 4th, has at least part located at Lautum. So it appears to have been commited to the DEI.

In the Phillipines we have identified now:

Clark:
1st Formosa Inf. Regiment
48th Engineer Regiment
Kanno Detachment
47th Infantry Regiment
9th Infantry Regiment
20th Infantry Regiment
48th Field Artillery Regiment
9th Ind.Hvy.Art. Battalion
8th Medium Field Artillery Regiment
1st Medium Field Artillery Regiment
14th Army
15th Ind.Art.Mortar Battalion

Cabantuam:
65th Brigade
48th Recon Regiment
16th Recon Regiment
2nd Ind.Art.Mortar Battalion

Landed at Legapasi (but not seen much)

Kimura Det
Kure 1st SNLF
1st Naval Construction Battalion

At Cagayan (but now certainly moving somewhere)
8th Tank Regiment
146th Infantry Regiment

At Rabaul Landed:
144th Infantry Regiment
15th Base Force

Options include continue to fall back on Manila, or reinforce Clark... That will force them to send more forces...

It appears at the moment that they are going to try to bottle us up in the Phillipines, while they send forces elsewhere... we intend to not allow that to happen too much (but not a lot we can do...)

Cheers

Rob

Honestly, that's one of the best jobs Ive seen playing on the Allied side so early... I gues the two-days turn do help, and you were two lucky buddies, but damn that's cool!

Thanks Fishbed, yes we are a bit surprised, we think aliens have abducted the real Joe and Nik!

OTOH this is part of the overall plan, not really fight for anything, but hit back when we can, the threat of that (accompanied by succesful prosecution) will make them go back to being cautious...

But we are basically spent in the DEI for the moment.

Current plans are:

Open a new front in the NORPAC suported by a CV.

Move the remaining 2 CV sth of Java and move aircraft to support the defence of Java.

Continue to build up in New Zealand, then move forward in force to Fiji before looking for opportunities late Aug in SOPAC.

Defend forward in the Phillipines (1 hex out from Manila) as the enemy has split their forces, and looks like they don't have enough to penetrate anywhere.

We know where KB and Mini KB are (East DEI) but we have the following priority information requierments:

Where are the Japanese airbourne units (probably Burma...).

Where are all the SNLF as the 4th Div (broken into 3, with 1/3rd sunk, are in the east DEI) probably massing at Truk for ops in SWPAC (PM)/SOPAC... but they need CV spt.

Where is the rest of the Japanese air forces (about half noted in Phillipines/Malaya).

All the above leads me to believe Joe and Nik where planning something "big" ... but now we have probably forced a delay or a complete replan...

We are still trying to maintain a balanced posture, with fleet units in the Indian Ocean, East Coast of Australia, Pearl Harbour and NORPAC capable of limited offensive action.

Fuel in Australia is our limitation, in particular to support the IO forces.

Cheers

Rob

21-22 Jan 1942

Burma
No change. The Japanese advance guard is moving forward on the remnants of our rear guard. About 12k in supply is unloading the last amounts. We will then load all the fuel we can before the last convoy leaves in a few days. Defence preparations are occurring in a number of locations well inland ahead of an anticipated Japanese thrust.

Malaya
heavy air attacks on Singapore occur, but the damage is being repaired as fast as its being created... so far. We are loosing a lot of aircraft on the ground though. The AV is around 700 with lvl 4 forts. The Japanese are about to take the last base on the mainland that is allied.

Sumatra
The Japanese fast transport in elements of the raiding regiment. The CL Kuma takes two hits from the defenders guns. During the day a few allied aircraft attack the beachhead, and planes attack the retiring FT TF to no effect. On the 21st The allies bombard and the Japanese shock attack. In both cases the Japanese come off the worse for wear, and only achieve 1:1 against forts of 2. The forts are dropped to one though. On the 22nd though they only achieve 1:4, it looks like even with the additional troops Palembang will hold, and the Japanese are exhausted!

Ground combat at Palembang (48,91)

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 4532 troops, 62 guns, 13 vehicles, Assault Value = 137

Defending force 4049 troops, 71 guns, 5 vehicles, Assault Value = 73

Palembang Base Force
224 Group RAF /1

Java

A few sub attacks in the area, still quiet.

East DEI
The heardt of the action at the moment. As expected we loose the Ceres, Boise and Houston to air and naval combat, plus 2 more DD's. Two DD's have escaped though! I tried to get the CA/L to Ambonto act as a floating fortress :)

Elsewhere KB aircraft hit Koepang and Lautum. The landings at Kendari cause more casualties and the base falls on the first attack. At Lautum though things are very different...

Ground combat at Lautem (72,115)

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 5147 troops, 42 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 150

Defending force 2913 troops, 66 guns, 2 vehicles, Assault Value = 74

2nd KNIL AA Battalion
Manado Base Force /1

Again we hold them and the Japanese forces aren't in good shape, even with support from the air. I doubt Nik or Joe have a reserve in the area, but now that Kendari has fallen they can load those troops and send them to Lautum... but that will take a few more days. The intent of Lautum continues to work, it is causing more and more delay and taking their plans out of sync.

Philippines
At Cabanatuan they try a deliberate attack :

Ground combat at Cabanatuan (80,76)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 9957 troops, 55 guns, 98 vehicles, Assault Value = 256

Defending force 13462 troops, 194 guns, 32 vehicles, Assault Value = 498

On the second day about 200 more AV have arrived for the allied side. So we are solid, and the forts went up a level. see the next post for cunning plans....

SWPAC
A24's operating from PM hit Lae and a TF going into Buna (no hits but i think the TF turned back as no additional forces have appeared there). We own this area at the moment.

China
Things are not looking good for Nanning. The whole north central front is about to collapse. We just can't halt them :( I'm glad Tony is playing this, he basically did the same thing to me in our game!

cheers

Analysis
Very happy with what we are achieving at the moment. We have really stolen the moment from Nik and Joe, and though I hesitate to say it I think we have won the initiative for the moment.

Key actions in the coming turn.

Support the ground troops at Lautum with B-17 strikes on the enemy. Fighters have now arrived in Darwin.

In the SWPC I've moved a unit of Marine Dautless's to PM to go with the Marine Wildcat unit and 2 A-24 units. We will continue to hit Lae and up the ante of force they will need to commit to this area. The 8th Marines should be at Townsville in about 2-3 days. they will then be flow in to help the defence as well. With 30k in supply PM will require a multi divisional attack to take it within 2-3 weeks, with KB in support.

In the Phillipines now we have stopped the advance cold I will attack. I will move units (15--200AV) to Iba from Clark, then attack Lingayen. I'm moving another 300 AV from Manila to Clark. We have a chance of surrounding the Clark forces then... See the image below. Supplies are now about 30k. I've tried to get in extra but so far all have been sunk...

Replanning t=in the Phillipines.

After discussing with Tony I have decided to shock attack in 2 turns at Clark to force the Japanes to retreat, rather than try to surround them. Thefore the following orders have been cut

Move 4th Marines from Cabanatuan to Clark (about 90AV but 60 experiance).
Move 300 AV from Manila to Clark.
Cease movement of forces out of Clark to Iba (150 AV).

This should give us about 11-1200 AV vs at most 600 AV on the Japanese side. I will bombard with 155mm guns for two days then with the shock attack we should get 3:1 and force them to retreat... thats the plan anyway!

Cheers

Rob

Ahem...speaking as a northerner (north of the Murray)...don't you think that in view of your sterling efforts to date, that you might reconsider your attitude towards saving us northerners.  After all now that we seem likely to be able to export our Hunter Valley chardonays (plus Bega cheese, Sydney rock oysters) without having to comply with any directives issued from Tokyo, we might just decide to export our valuable products to more deserving markets.  Yes I think it might be time for a nice grovelling exercise - we might even allow David Hussey to replace the injured Michael Clarke, if we are sufficiently mollified.

Hmm interesting and very bloody AAR. Might I ask where did you get those B-17D's at Singapore from? AFAIK all B-17's in the philippines are restricted?
