Down further south, I was dismayed to find that my large stack of units at Rybilov had reset themselves to defend with no destination. Previously, these unit had been moving to Voroshilov and had already moved almost 40 miles. No idea what caused this but now I have to start moving all over again. BTW the same thing happened with my units at Manila that were moving to Clark.

Had you set them to "follow unit"? Sounds like the same bug as in WITP as there the follow unit order also is "semi-broken". If it works, you´re lucky, if not you´re unlucky. I never found out why it works sometimes and why it doesn´t work other times.

Yes, I had set them to follow unit.

Turn 43 18 Jan 1942

The soviets sent a group of DDs to bombard Kanko. However I had some Japanese torpedo and gun boats there that foiled the bombardment. I lost one gun boat but no big deal. As the DDs retreated back towards Vladivostok they steamed across my submarine picket line and I had an RO boat put a torpedo into one of the destroyers.

The ships sunk screen says that I sunk the destroyer but I don't think so. One hit, heavy damage but no fire, and only one hex from vladivostok. At least she will be out of action, hopefully until after I take Vladivostok or at least until I bomb her in drydock.

Not much on the air front. I skirmished again with the AVG at Moulmein and minor skirmishes with Soviet aircraft over Korea and Russia.

These are definitely not Chinese troops that I am fighting at Ulan.

Finally, here is a shot of the Haruna in the repair yard at Kure. Thanks to the damage to her main battery, she will take 112 days to repair. Now you know what happens when a ship takes significant damage.

What about setting her to "critical"? Does it change something?

I don't see any significant changes when set to Critical for large damage.  Though it might bring it to the front of the repair queue when there are many ships in the port.

Yes, changing to critical isn't worth it. Those damaged guns barrels just take a while to change.

Turn 44 19 Jan 1942

Another slow turn while my forces prepare for the next wave of attacks.

I have finished capturing most of the north shore of New Guinea. Next turn my second wave lands at Rabaul covered by the KB. Still no sign of his cruisers or carriers.

seydlitz,

great stuff as always. Was wondering at your thinking behind the West Coast the sub patrol locations? It seems the SF convoys will be further to the North while the LA and SD convoys will be well to the south.

I also had my Manila troops reach Clark and I will be launching a combined attack there next turn. I knew that they had arrived because I got warnings that I was taking damage from partisans because I did not have a sufficient garrison there. I did not even realize that I needed 150 points worth of garrison in Manila.

BTW,
Mark, my opponent, has asked me what people are saying in the AAR thread relative to his defense and gameplay. If you have any comments then I will be sure to relay them. I did suggest that he read Aztez' AAR and post over there since both are suffering the allied pain in China.

After all the frank factories repair I should be able to make decent progress. When I went to check the factories this turn for the screenshot I saw that I had most of them on do not repair and I just corrected that issue. Luckily most of the Frank factories are small. I believe it was some of the other factories that I expanded to 120.

Now awaiting my next turn from Mark.

seydlitz, are your Frank R&D factories repairing? Asking that because out of 12 factories that should produce on average 20 Frank R&D points each, after 15 turns i have only 2 repaired

I have plenty of supplies coming to major Japan cities, support (dunno if relevant) is more than adequate.

According to manual R&D is produced only if a plane would be produced, so basically in my case i am not researching anything and i am prob. wasting supplies.

Frank's are reseatching quite well (in my games at least). Especially fast goes research of engines, even NE turbojet repairs 1 point per turn, maybe I should start researching jet Ki-201 Karyu and will have it at the middle of 44 ? :)))

For whatever reason it still looks like they are not repairing in any understandable or reasonable fashion. Not sure why as I have made sure that supply is available in excess of what is needed.

according to this post Franks r&d factories repaired:

quote:

ORIGINAL: vaned74

Checked that too - on smaller factories. Ran a test earlier today - set up 20 small factories of size 2 each (all damaged). Factories were set for Ki-84-1b (avail 45/03) and game date was 1941. Ran 30 days - repair rate was still about 0.0017 per day - 2 plane production points repaired.

Decided to change the game date to April 44 (less than 1 year from original plane availability date). Ran 30 days - same repair result.

Really tends to mean that airplane research for Japan will be a very slow process indeed if partially damaged factories don't contribue R&D. Ok by me - if Allied production is fixed then Japanese plane R&D shouldn't really merit much benefit unless very significant resources are dedicated to it (like pushing almost all your factories to R&D thus denuding yourself of needed production while awaiting your R&D result).

I dont think that repairs of r&d factories goes as intended. Hard to tell what goes on with the supplies, does it use 1k even if factory stays damaged? Its even harder to predict when Franks would be available for production.

A couple of questions. Did your opponent abandon Manila or what happened to it?

Another one regarding soviets. How is your opponent handling his artillery?

I know you stated there has been few major ground assaults here and there. Very curious since those howitzer guns do seem monsters and used properly could change a balance of an ongoing combat.

Keep up the good work!

No, we fought for Manila. I captured it a few turns back and all of his units there surrendered. I just ran the current turn and took Clark. This forced his remaining units back into Bataan. I will post the recap later today.

Regarding the soviet artillery, I have only had to engage a couple of units in each battle so far, so it's not been a factor. I will have to fight it when my troops get to Voroshilov but at least I also have my huge stack of artillery with me.

Looks like a pretty agonizing campaign against Russia. They're tough on the ground. When do you expect to be done? It looks like it'll come down to one decisive battle? The Russians will have to hurl their back bone into a big battle sooner or later, once it begins to crack in that battle they're done for. Well, it seems to me that they don't have a whole lot in terms of numbers, but the units they do have are really tough, correct? I'm really curious. I've never had experience against Russia in AE or even in WITP.

This is a really interesting AAR. You really put alot into your plans.

It looks like this will be about a six month campaign at least. The Soviets have a lot of units in AE and most of them are good units. This is definitely not a walk in the park or even a sure thing for Japan. This fight is turning out to be more difficult than all of the other campaigns that Japan undertakes early in the war.

hi seydlitz!

congrats to this unconvential strategy. im really looking forward
how this developes.

how much effect does the winter have on your advance?
would it make sense to slow the op tempo till the temperature and
weather gets better or does dely only make the russians stronger?
