This turn requires a strong stomach from any JFBs... with the IJAAF on the ropes at Manila, at least temporarily, I order the CVs to aggressively push into the seas north of Luzon where there is so much IJN traffic. Just as well that IJ defences were like tissue paper at this point as the CAP over the CVs was scarily tiny at a few points. However there was no real opposition so I timed it well. However as the fleet moved across the approaches to Manila they bumped into a lot of shipping fleeing Manila, which meant a CV got to fill a merchant full of holes with the 5" gun, not something you see every day. And for the IJN far worse to come, as a bunch of damaged carriers were caught in the waters NW off of Luzon, too badly damaged to fly more than a handful of aircraft. The veterans of the Sulu Sea fighting. ...all were sunk. A hard day for the IJN. I think there's not much IJN left now actually. I only hope I have the fortitude my foe has when I'm playing Japan in 1944, it must be quite a souldestroying experience. All those cool toys you have in 1942... they are all doomed in the end. And chances are they'll go out with a whimper rather than a bang. "To be a good soldier you must love the army. To be a good commander, you must be willing to order the death of the thing you love." As I feared Manila's air defences are already recovering from the butchery, recovering enough to fear for my tired CVs anyway. But the risk was so worth the reward. I have a tendency to downplay damage to the enemy as I focus on damage to myself but the IJAAF must be in a state of almost total collapse on Luzon judging by this. The USAAF on Mindanao is in dire straits as well, this turn I had 18 heavy bombers ready to fly - about 20% of full strength. The rest either dead or damaged. So I'm hurt bad. But he's almost annihilated. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Morning Air attack on Manila , at 79,77 Weather in hex: Overcast Raid detected at 46 NM, estimated altitude 50,000 feet. Engineer Regiment 26th Special Base Force Tacloban falls, and so at the end of the operation Cebu, Iloilu and Tacloban are all in Allied hands. The engineers are already unloading. The cost in terms of ground units has been negligible, but the USAAF has been MAULED. I think of the order of 120 heavy bombers was lost suppressing Rabaul, and I'd guess almost 100 P38s as well. But massive damage has been done to the IJAAF, and the bulk of Combined Fleet has been sunk. I think the IJ presence on Luzon might be already fatally undermined before the first American boot hits the beach there. My units are exhausted again and morale is in the toilet after this week of high tempo fighting. Some of the fighter squadrons on the CVs have fatigue in the 50s. Pilots asleep in mid air no doubt. I need to disengage the USAAF and USN for a bit of R&R. Thats fine - PT boats and barges will suffice now I think, i got AGPs and barges in position in the Philippines to move things around, the next big op will be Legaspi, and I suspect it'll be easier now after the thrashings given to the defenders of Luzon.
