I don't expect anyone to really spend any time helping me debug this, but given that lots of smart people read this I thought I'd toss it out in case someone says "Oh, that's probably...". Or, if not that, then maybe at least someone else will say "Hey, that happens to me to!"

This is going to sound weird, and it's OK if you shake your head and say "Boy, he's jumping at coincidences." But I've done a number of structured experiments and the same thing happens.

I have a simple home network, a desktop running HP hard-wired to a router and a laptop running Vista with a wireless connection. Firefox for browsing on both.

I can read all the forum postings fine from the desktop, including the Nohoman Redux...AAR. My laptop also has been able to read all of the posts fine - except Nohoman Redux AAR. When I try to read that, it loads a portion of the posts and the top part of some of the graphics, then goes off into never-never land (spinny circle) and never loads the rest of the post.

Moreover, my home network is now down! Neither my laptop or desktop can access the internet.

After some period of time (haven't really timed it but say 5 minutes) it fixes itself. Both computers can access the internet again via the router.

Like I said at the beginning, I'm not expected folks to make any special effort to diagnose this for me, but if you have an obvious answer let me know. I find it very odd that it appears to be this AAR only, and I can make it happen whenever I want.

Of course, I do have a workaround, I now only read that AAR on my desktop (except when I forget, of course

Well, I don't have a lot of experience in this specific area and haven't used Vista, but my guess would be that you have some problem where your router is not properly handling the TCP/IP session established by your Vista system while it has no trouble with the session set up by your desktop.

The sort of reason that you can see the symptom you're getting with a particular post could be due to something like this:

1. The two different machines, either because of the difference in OS, or in defaults that the network stack chooses based on hardware available etc - end up with a different setting for maximum block size it will attempt to receive (and the Vista machine setting is larger).

2. The router is capable of handling all the block sizes used on the desktop machine but not the largest size used on the Vista machine.

3. The block sizes actually used in a session depend on the applications and specific data patterns, and it turns out that the only time you've seen this particular oversized block used in a browser session happens to be for returning data in that particular post.

4. When the problem occurs, your router chokes and can't do anything until it times out and resets.

You could get another clue to verify that it is actually a problem with the router hanging. You say you wait for several minutes for the problem to fix itself. Try initiating the problem then immediately do a hardware reset on your router and try browsing from both machines again.

So if you had the right tools and were experienced in troubleshooting network problems you could verify the exact problem starting with the protocol settings on both machines and the router. One possible solution if it were a something like a block size issue would be to reconfigure your protocol stack on your Vista machine if you can't fix it with a setting change at the router.

My guess though is that you're using an older router (pre-Vista), in which case you're likely to run into this issue again so it would be better to solve it at the router. The first thing I would check is if your router has a firmware update available from the manufacturer. You could also run some searches on tech forums for that router - if it's a problem with new default settings in Vista breaking this router, others will have run into it and be complaining somewhere. If you can't find a fix that way I would suggest just living with it until you decide to get a new router.

I work for ISP so I know this kind of problems are in routers sometimes.
I myself had this kind of problem (not on matrixgames forum tough) and upgrading my routers firmware solved the problem.
And the fact your connection hangs after u try to read some web page sounds exactly like this problem.

Thanks. These give me some ideas to work from.

The biggest blind spot I had was I was assuming it was the laptop, not the router, because the router was common to both the working and the semi-working computer. I'll do some research on the router.

I'll let you know how it turns out!
