Shaun,

In light of the issues with scrubs in real player associations, can you just eliminate the generation of scrubs in real player associations? In other words, import the real players and don't generate any other players. I realize that in some seasons, mostly the early seasons, that would leave teams with under 25 players. But, we could tune the injury and fatigue settings to compensate for this.

I don't think I'm alone when I say I'm tired of seeing scrub players get drafted before or play in front of real players. And in many cases, the real players have better ratings. I tried to manually remove the scrubs from my 1901 association, but I don't think the game liked the rosters to be under 25 players. As the game advanced to spring training, the first few AI teams signed the remaining real players leftover from the draft, then the game stopped responding. I assume it was in a loop trying to sign players to get the rosters up to 25 or 35 players, but there weren't any players available.

I wish I had a ready-for-play solution to this, but fictional scrubs, especially pre-1920, are a necessity. In 1912 the actual Red Sox had 27 players listed, and some of these guys had less than 50 AB or 10 IP.

I feel badly for you guys who like the deadball era, but it's gotta be an extremely difficult time period in which to get realistic game results.

The only current options I can think are to (1) institute early draft entry and (2) use 35-man rosters. This would at least reduce the number of created scrubs.

Dave,

As a workaround, you could try letting the game do its thing in the initial setup and then, right before spring training, take over each team and sign real players to fill out their rosters and cut scrubs in the process. After 2-3 seasons of this, you would be in pretty good shape with only a few scrubs left on active rosters. Leave the scrubs in the association to form the free agent pool.

I'm in favor of eliminating scrubs from fictional player associations. I can understand the need for them in historical associations as KG stated, but there is no need that I see to have them in fictional player associations. I have seen big problems with scrubs being drafted each year in the amateur draft. It makes no sense to pass up legitimate players in the draft in favor of 30+ year old scrubs.

That will only happen if a team is dangerously low on funds.

Okay, that makes sense but in the testing I've been doing, scrubs are being selected in the amateur draft by teams that are only using 30%-50% of their total finances. Between 15%-20% of the draft picks are being used on scrubs by teams with no financial constraints.

I guess I don't understand why scrubs are a necessity in any season or era. The xml can be edited to change injury frequency, injury severity, fatigue, complete games for pitchers, etc. Maybe the answer to this problem isn't to add scrubs, but instead to make era specific xml files. The problem for me is that I can't manually eliminate the scrubs either. I think there might be a minimum required roster size. Shaun or Steve will have to answer that.

I tried that, but in a different way. The problem is I don't think the game liked the rosters to be under 25 players. In 1901, and other deadball era seasons, if I eliminate scrubs, most rosters are under 25 players, and many are under 20 players. I'll have to try KG's recommendation of using early entry. I'll also have to see how Wrathchild has built his deadball era associations.

There are definitely scrubs in mine, even with early entry on. Some of them even get signed. They never seem to get used, though, and get released a few seasons later when someone better comes along.

Thanks for the info. I'll try early entry to see what happens with the league.

Another issue in this area has bugged me for quite a while. I have problems with "real player scrubs", actual MLB players who import during setup or off-season. If the player happens to have only a few appearances/at-bats during the import season, he imports as a scrub and stays that way.

I'm not sure how much of a "career snapshot" the program considers when importing a player and assigning their initial ratings. Perhaps someone can shed some light on this for me.

In my current assn, Mariano Rivera imported as a mediocre starting pitcher and has stayed unsigned. He'll swim in the free agent pool until he retires, after never making it to pro ball. I guess he's playing in Japan or in an independent league.

I hope this doesn't come off as too critical. I've been pleased with almost all of the recent changes. This is a great program getting even better with each release!
