Wish we could have a button to redirect these arrivals to the home islands instead of showing up in bases that have been abandoned. I don't care where in japan they show up just that they show up where they can be used.

How about sending all remaining shipping to some remote place out of range? Sachalin?

I have moved as many as I could up to Rashin where they will sit out the rest of the war. Tons of fuel sitting in these ships, that I just can't get at now. Shame I may need to base my ASW out of this port to use this fuel.

The AK's still in japan are all very low on fuel or out totally. (ie cheap points for any person who can fly in and hit them.

Hmmh, seems like it slowly at the time to ask you for the lessons learned from this game?  How would you change your late war strategy or long term planning from the outset in your next game?

Given the power that Allied ground units in mid-44 show here, combined with the heavy bombardments and naval blockade of supply routes, I don't think anymore that a "defense in-depth" strategy is benefiting the Japanese during 44-45.   If your huge strong points, and large ground armies like the Naga one with 2 Tank and >>2 Inf divisions get obliterated at almost no cost.  They hardly cost the allies time, and a few divisions and squadrons to dispatch them.  That still leaves them way more than enough ground and air forces to focus at any given point, and to run over Okinawa and several more islands in a matter of weeks.  If I see that ability, combined with the power of concentration of the 4E bombers together on airfield suppression as early as summer 42, I think the idea of fortifying many (remote) places and building interlocking air base systems will only be of minor importance, and maybe actually accelerating allied advance (who will use the thus provided infrastructure).

I think the best strategy for Japan to prolong the war, or even achieve a change, is the same as exerted by the Germans against the Russians, or Napoleon, or Lee:  Offensive moves, ever more counter-attacks at weak allied spots, enabled by continuous detailed recon of the enemy moves.  I think the latter part is actually the most difficult, staying on top of the pictures at all times, and might be costly -- but the benefits are opportunities to strike back with concentrated forces where it can do harm at little cost.  Maybe fortifying only a few key bases (Truk, Singapore, Rabaul, Manila/Clark, Rangoon and a few more) with strong troops and all infrastructure in 1942-43 (if possible, beyond), and keeping all the other troops at hand for large counter-invasions, raids etc would do better?  At least for 42-43 the naval situation will still be fine for the IJN, if handled well, so this counter strategy could be effective.

I salute you for your perseverance in the face of adversity.

But, I must note, that plane losses for both sides seem really low, even compared to the real war, even though combat in AE is generally more intense. I realize that PDU Off might be crippling (and probably should not be accepted for Scen 1), but Japan still should have been able to produce more planes.

I am not sure how many planes I should have been able to build. I have had a few problems with production, for most of the war china was out of fuel at the factories and no matter how much fuel I poured into nearby ports it would not move to those factories. Reading what others had written here I though it was working until they made a change during one of the patches and WITPAE Trackers started showing the factories not producing HI.

1 thing I would do in the future is plan on having a smaller inner defence with more troops on key islands and get as much oil stored on the home island as possiable. problem with this is there are now so many more good islands for the allies to use they don't need to take those key islands anymore. They only send a death star by every so often and they have all those troops stranded there.

As for counter invasions there is maybe two or three islands where they may work late in the war but trust me, you had better have all the CV's you can muster, Subs, BB and LBA in the hundreds and even then it will be a slauhter for your transports as they sit there for days unloading. Where I have seen the allies land 6+ Full divisions in 2 days.

I had some luck during the game raiding his supply lines with SCTF's. This is something I would do a lot more of any troops that you can sink at sea are worth gold. In a stand up fight after 43 every allied trooper is worth 2 japanese.

The main thing is my game may not be a good case study. I think we found just about every issue that could be deemed gamey in the game, but that is what happens when you start a game before patches are added.

1) Fuel not moving between bases
2) Supplies being sucked into Tokyo
3) High alt fighter sweeps
4) Burma being supplied to easy (allied)
5) Search arcs not working ( dont know but may have had something to do with my carriers not spotting Allied carries less than 3 hexs away)

Just to name a few

The biggest problem I had was ME after losing my carriers I did a lot of self destructive things that I now know not to do next time.

ie: don't take on 4 US fleet carriers with 1 fleet japanese carrier.

1) Things I will do next time.
2) Move more oil to the home islands
3) More SCTF raids
4) Move carriers around more
5) Build bigger forward bases (not building them only slows down the Allies by a few weeks. (The speed they build **** is frightning)
6) Push super hard from the start.
7) Attack deep from start to prevent the Allies defending the 4 or 5 bases that matter in the DEI (need to get the oil moving ASAP - ground losses and AK's mean nothing as they can be replaced later the oil can't)

Possibly another useful thought - I've been reading the AAR between Fletcher and Cantona.

Fletcher seems to be having a lot of success against the allied subs. He said that he put in a lot of early training of his air units in anti-sub skills and organising sub hunter-killer groups. He also seems to have a very highly organised Japanese convoy system (something which the IJN didn't in RL).

Staving off the US sub threat is a significant factor.

Subs have not really giving me much of a problem. Yes they are a pain.

I tried a few diffrent thing.

I have highly trained ASW aircraft they get hits but I don't think they are very effective. I still have lots of subs in real close to Japan, shows me they are not scared of the airplanes.

Once I stopped running convoys I have been flooding areas with ASW. I noticed with my subs could take a fair bit of punishment. The idea I have at the moment is to damage them and then catch them with another group near by. Seems to be working have had a few forced to the surface and sunk. They seem to surface if they are already damaged.

for convoys I used two styles.

Fast convoy's: anything that can run about 15 and above with about 2 Escorts per 10 ships.

Slow Convoy Groups: Ships with speed 10 to 12, Send smaller convoys to a rally point and then make them follow each other back to Japan. Use 2 escorts per 10 ships and 1 extra ASW group out front.

Worked well very time consuming and all the ships need to be unloaded before coming back.

I did not really try and hunt his subs as I had bigger problems. A carrier death star will kill way more ships. Also you really dont get any ASW Heavy hitters until late 43 - early 44. Seeing as you can not transfer the crews you spent all the early war years training to these Escorts. I dont see the point.

In my next game I will take the losses caused by his subs until early 44 and then go after him, maybe even accelerate those escorts and start a bit sooner.
I find the ships do better used in deep raids on his transports. The new open water intercepts are Japans best weapon. Make him protect those convoy's at the moment most allied players put a few escorts with 20 - 30 transports at let allied ASW keep the subs away. 1 CL and a few DD's can decimate a convoy in a few days and run for home. Do this once and he will need to put more ships with those convoy's and less at the pointy end.

Here's the quick version of the damage look at those fires. I think it works out to about 100 fires per bomb.

Not Damaged:
Manpower 25%
Resources 16.5%
Heavy Ind 10.3%
Light Ind 16.4%
Naval Shipyard 5%
Merchant Shipyard 5%
Repair Shipyard 9.8%
Armament Assembly 0%

Average of about 90% damage in 2 Days, that will never be fixed. I have turned off all production at these sites and set repair to off as well.

Tip 1: I had a few sentai that I had set to Kamikaze that had a withdraw date. Problem was I could not get the disband or withdraw buutons to come up no matter the base they where stationed at. Stupid me just found out set them back to training and you can withdraw them, seems to be that they can not be withdrawn when set to kamikaze

Tip 2: never put a way point within max movement range of a base where you want a fast transport to run in and run out. I could never work out why my Fast transport where still sitting at a base the next morning. I think the waypoint being near max distance causes the fast transport code to fail. (just my thoughts as I have lost so many ships this way and the waypoint is the only thing I do diffrent.)

Task Force 200 encounters enemy Task Force at 116 , 98 (Kill em all)

This group of destroyers was trying to sneak up on Saipan and Bombard his Heavy Bombers there. I can bet that they are over stacked at both Tiaian and Saipan. This group of destroyers has to return to Japan and refuel and rearm as they no longer have the Ammo to do the bombbard.
