Manado

I landed 2 more SNLFs today to take the base (as a recon base).

Not much hapened other than at PM. I took Cabanatuan, killing 942 for the loss of 175 troops.

The I-122 increased sys damage by 1 to 49-93(54)-24(18)-0. That doesn't look good.

SE Fleet

I attacked PM. I had planned on bombarding with 2 BB and 2 CL as well as having 75% of KB's bombers support the attack. As it happened, KB didn't fly and the BB TF left for Rabaul without bombarding. The attack as a disaster. I took 1285 casualties (primarily disruptions - only 1 or 2 squads destroyed) to 573 Allied losses. I'm keeping 4 Div headed to PM for the time being.

SE Fleet

I was pissed at the bombardment TF so I turned them around to bombard anyway. It was ineffectual. They're headed back to Rabaul to replenish. The one and only AKE in the Japanese inventory (4 more are converting) is at Rabaul. They'll be back.

By the way, Kashima is repairing at Rabaul. She'll leave for Truk then the Home Islands in a couple of days to repair the 13 major flot damage. Since I'm talking damaged ships, the I-122 had a breakthrough today. She repaired 19 flot damage. She's now at 48-72(54)-24(18)-0. Banzai!

Another Dutch sub put down a damaged PB attempting to crawl back to Rabaul.

KB is still tooling around off PM. The Marblehead found them and attacked. The attack was ineffectual (Marblehead took 2 minor hits to no Japanese damage) but now Ted knows the composition of KB. The fuel situation is not critical, but I'm heading west with KB. They will pay a visit at Darwin and then head toward Babeldaob, where the replenisment TF is waiting to refuel them. Then KB will fall out of Allied sight while I send them to a port to replenish torpedoes. After that, we'll see. Currently, Ted has no idea where Akagi and Kaga are (sitting at Kwajalein).

Hong Kong

I attacked again today. Still not enough to take the place, but wearing them down some more. I got 1:1 odds reducing the fort level once again from 1 to 0 and killed 362 to 255 Japanese casualties.

Singkawang

I have a surface force of 4 CA and 4 DD guarding here. Next door, at Sambas, there was an Allied ship showing up in port. I sent the CAs to bombard and a shell hit the ship (AVP Poolster). One massive explosion later and the port symbol disappeared.

Beaufort (base to the west of Brunei)

I took it today destroying 1 base force and pushing out the other killing 442 for the loss of 13.

Manado

I took it today killing 529 for the loss of 104. I'll pick up the 2 SNLFs for their next mission (not sure what it is yet).

Good news for I-122! She repaired all her damage today! All that happened at a level 1 port. About 3 more weeks and she'll be seaworthy enough to head back to the Home Islands for complete repairs. She now at 49-54(54)-24(18)-0.

Hong Kong

I may as well start out with some good news. Hong Kong was liberated today! For a total of 152 casualties, I captured 8524 Brits. The best part was that the industry is in great shape:

Manpower: 4(1) - I will not repair the damaged manpower center.
Resources: 60(0)
Heavy Industry: 80(1) - I will repair the remaining HI
Light Industry: 220(0)
Repair Yard: 50(0) - I will eventually increase this yard.

The port is level 8(8) which is good enough for me. In WitP, I always increased this port to level 9. I don't think it's needed here. Now to clear those mines. I wish I had those 7 DMSs......

Philippines

Now for the next bit of good news. Clark Field has been liberated! For 385 casualties, I killed/captured 2208 Allies and destroyed the Subic Bay Defenses (static) and the 194th Tk Bn. That's a fair chunk of AV gone. Anyway, they retreated into Bataan leaving a total of 5 units isolated in two separate locations. I'll destroy those 5 units before moving into Bataan and bombing them into the stone age. I'll get some easy experience for the 5 Air Division.

Malaya/Singkawang

The Nells flying out of Singkawang caught an xAKL sailing alone about 4 hexes SE of Singapore and put her down. That was an odd place for that ship.

The Billiton invasion force left Cam Ranh Bay today. They'll arrive in about 4-5 days. There is a whole load of ships to include 5 BBs and ~8 CAs to protect them.

SE Fleet

Stalemate at Pt. Moresby.

The Lae invasion fleet is about ready to sail from Truk.

Other stuff

I lost an xAK to old damage.

KB did a drive by of Darwin hoping to find some shipping on it's way to rendezvous with the AOs near Babeldaob. Eight ships were found and 7 were confirmed sunk: 2 CM, 2 AM and 3 xAKLs. A TK was hit by 6 250kg bombs. I doubt she'll survive. There were no plane losses.

That's about all the excitement.

Various invasion TFs are enroute to their destinations.

Yeah Bruce. I'd love to see all the little convoys that are going to scatter next turn. I can see only one from KB. It's got 2 TKs and an escort.

What's the sitrep in the Phillipines? You took Clark, and some units retreated to Bataan; where are all the Allies, split b/w there and Manila?

I personally think Clark is the key to the PI, and a wise Allied player would plan the last stand there, instead of Manila. But that's just me.

Q-Ball, it's really strange in the Philippines.  I own all of Luzon except Iba and Bataan.  He has 3 units isolated at Iba and another few (can't remember the exact number) isolated at Cabanatuan (the hex NE of Manila) and I own Cabanatuan.  I want to wipe out those two groups and then send some force to invest Bataan.  I am thinking of sending in to Bataan the 65 Bde and 1 infantry division as well as 5 artillery units (the max per our house rule) and bombarding and bombing them to death.

I took Manila on 30 Dec.  He had already evacuated it.

Production update.

With the capture of Hong Kong, my resource production has once again become negative.  Here's my current monthly shortages of the "Big 3":

Resources:  -85,800
Oil:  -231,900
Fuel:  -101,910

Note that the fuel shortage is just for industry.  Ship fuel usage is in addition to this.

Overall, based on my current reserves & production, I have the following reserves (in months):

Resources:  75.3
Oil:  13.0
Fuel:  7.4

I reserve 50% of the fuel for fleet operations.

Expansion:

I allocated 30k supply for Miri oil expansion this month and 50k supply for other expansion.  20k supply is headed to Miri and 24k of the remaining 50k has been allocated as follows:

10k - Repair yard at Tokyo (to 30)
6k - Ki-57-I (to 12 per month)
7k - Ha 5 (to 14 per month)  This is for the Ki-57-I.  I'm still short 10 per month but there are still some in the pool.  This is a dead end engine so once the airframe upgrades to the Ki-57-II, I'll convert this engine to something else (probably the Ha-35).
1k - Damaged HI in Hong Kong.

This leaves 26k for expansion for Jan 42.  I'm going to save it for a bit since I expect to take some oil producing base this month.  I may need it for oil center repair.

Very interested on this subject... do you think Miri´s expansion is advisable? I´m having a hard time loading there (at brunei indeed), as opossed to palembang (with a fleet HQ based in palembang)

And that 50% fuel for fleet operations is really giving me headaches, mainly the delivery...

Yeah, fuel is giving me headaches already too.  I don't have enough TKs at Truk to keep Kwajalein and Rabaul's fuel reserves above 0.  Definitely headaches.  I've already send some TKs to Truk and need more there.  I'm thinking about 6-8 7950 ton TKs.

And before you guys say anything, no I don't have enough xAKs available right now.  I'm probably going to send some 14, 15 or 18kt xAKs to haul fuel from Truk.  I'd like to use the 18kt xAKs but they're rather vulnerable out there.  It'll probably be 14kt, probably the Toho class.  Each can haul 1760 fuel a trip.  There are 53 to start.  Possibly 20 at first?  I think that'll do it.  I can use the Aden PBs for escorts, probably 10.

About Miri.  Yeah, I think the Japanese player needs all the oil he can get.  I'm working on Miri's port.  I'll max it out eventually.  Right now, Brunei's oil is flowing to Miri.  It's showing one day's production every day.  Currently, I have extra TKs in the area because I don't control most of the oil producing centers.  Eventually, I'll use TKs for the oil (max of 45k per month) and xAKs for the fuel.

Are you sure that increasing Ha-5 production is a good idea? You should have more than enough in the stockpile to carry you over until the Ki-57-II arrives which uses a different engine anyway. It seems that expansion of Ha-35 or Ha-32 plants is more useful as both are in much more demand.

Thanks, sounds like your opponent messed-up the defense of Luzon. Clark is more defensible terrain than Bataan, and he is going to lose a few units before that even starts. Getting units cut-off is a big no-no for the Allies.

I see some players fighting forward like Nemo, but against a reasonably competent Japanese opponent, who doesn't short-change Luzon, the best strategy is to pull everyone back on Clark day one, and abandon Manila, IMO.

Either way though, it's not the tough nut that it was in WITP.

PS: On the ENGINES, I have found myself chronically short of all engines, particulalrly Ha-33, 34, and 35, especially the 35. I wish I had expanded production sooner in my game! Hopefully you have planned better than I did in those engines!

Yeah, I think it was a mistake.  I just did it last turn so I can shut it off next turn.  The Ki-57-II comes in 2 months.  What was I thinking?

AKEs - I converted some Lima Class to AKEs (Capacity 4900). I want to put 2 with TF 2 AOs. Will that be enough to replenish KBs torpedo load and replenish the ships?? Yes, i know they cannot do so at sea, but if in a port together, will it happen??

Recon Aircraft - I see in my game, that I don't have a factory for C5M2 Babs. Since they are Navy, then I have to wait till 11/42 for Irvings?? Are you doing anything to address this and what about your recon plane production?? Any changes here??

The one AKE we start the game with is enough to replenish a BB main armament. Not sure about the Limas. They're the biggest we can convert (I think). I'll check that out tonight. I believe that if an AO, TK or AKE (and all the smaller support ships) are in a TF in port (not sure if it needs to be docked), it'll replenish something that stops in.

I don't think we need any C5M2 Babs. The total build out is 19 with 7 in the pool. I haven't lost one yet. I don't think it's worth converting a factory for so few aircraft.

I'm heading home in a few minutes. We're getting some new carpeting installed and they need to measure today. So, I'll check this out in about an hour.

The Kashino only has capacity of 3000. That gets you Kongo and Fuso class rearm but not the bigger guns on Nagato class. Lima will get you there.

I'm not real good at keeping records for such things but I think two would generally be sufficient, just from vague recollections. I have definitely run into cases where one was not enough to refuel on a single turn (and since I play 2 day turns, that's a concern). Probably depends on how low everything is, if you have to reload AA that seems to take a lot of ops points.

One trick regardless of how many AKEs you have is to split off the most critical units first and make sure they get rearmed.

The other problem with one is it's a single point of failure if it's necessary to an operation. I learned that the hard way

The I-26 used up the last of her torpedoes off the west coast today. She put a torpedo into into the DD Rathburne and 3 into a YP. The YP didn't sink because there was nothing left of her. The I-25 is heading back out to those fertile hunting grounds. It'll probably be a week before she makes it so Ted will most likely run around looking for subs that aren't there.

I moved a rather large force 1 hex west of Sinyang and beat up on one of the healthy Chinese Corps. I pushed it out causing 4325 casualties to 13 Japanese casualties.

I took the unoccupied Tsiaotso. It's a dot hex with industry. I got Manpower 1(1), Resources 40 (0) and LI 40(0).

I destroyed the 8 Indian Bde and 1 Mysore Bn 2 hexes north of Kuala Lumpur, taking 972 captives for no loss. That's the second attack where the Imperial Guards Divisons destroyed it's opponents for no loss (the other was Georgetown).

I landed on Zamboanga (Mindinao) with the 2 SNLFs that took Manado. I'll attack tomorrow.

And now for some pictures......

The Philippines. You can see where I have isolated 7 units. 31 are cowering in Bataan.
