Here's the situation around Riga. As some of my troops are reducing the infestation along the river ( the Soviet river crossing defenders ) the rest of my troops are fanning out going as far and as fast as they can to recon, set up defensive positions, and generally harass the Soviet army. I see several Soviet aircraft at at least three airfields and I'm wondering if I should do some airfield attacks. The Soviets have regained their shock values and the airfield attacks would incur higher losses than happened in the first two turns so I'm not so sure it would be worth it to attack his aircraft since I will eventually have fewer than he has anyway. I did do an airfield attack in turn 6 and incurred 30% losses in my ME-109's and even though the Soviet aircraft were all destroyed, that seemed like a high price to me.

I'm leaving gaps between my recon scouts because Elmer has a habit of moving into them and it's easier to finish the surround on those units and destroy them.

The mopping-up is done in the Minsk area. Now those troops, and there are lots of them, can now rest a bit and head east to Smolensk.

I may want to rethink my habit of leaving gaps between my recon units. One of my Inf squads got too far ahead of the main body and got surrounded and attacked in the Soviet turn 7. Not much damage was done to the regiment but now I have to go to it's rescue instead of surging ahead moving to the east. I haven't moved anybody yet in turn 8 so I'm thinking I can rescue it or at least get some supply to that hex.

I did it again. I flew my 2nd Brandenburg unit to an enemy airfield that I thought might be empty and nope, it had an enemy unit in that hex evidently. It was a calculated risk and I lost this time.

Larry, the kill ratio on infantry doesn't seem very good for turn 7, I make it roughly 11000 Germans to 20000 Russians. Is this about normal from your experiences in FITE

So um.......the picture below shows the FITE turn 7 cumulative losses the Axis had ( lifted from my AAR which covers the FITE game I had with Curt Chambers )which as you can see is MUCH less than D21 Axis losses. I'm thinking the scenario designers moved the 'bloodiness' lever max to the right and as a result the combats are MUCH more deadly. Or something. Anyway, yes, I agree that the losses to both sides is MUCH higher than in FITE. But the effect seems to happen to both sides so I'm not complaining much.

Maybe one of the scenario designers can post something here to give us some idea what's going on. Hint, hint.

Well, not 'max to the right', but 1.5-2 times the factor of FitE. The FitE setting is the default setting, which some consider to be improper for this scale. I did all the research that this obscure topic would allow, and came to the conclusion that the setting in D21 is the proper one for this scenario.

Opinion time? The lower loss settings (default) in FitE are the main cause of the pbem stalemates that we frequently see. This is certainly not a conviction of FitE, I think it is safe to assume that the setting was left at the default due to its' complexity, and the paucity of information concerning its' implementation.

Thanks for that speedy reply Steve.  You're the cats meow.  Your explaination works for me.  It'll speed up the destruction of all the Soviet units I can find.  By the way, this AAR will suffer slower posts since I'm doing the super-detailed AAR for beginners at the same time I"m working this.  Stuff will still get posted and everything but the document I"m working on for beginners is really really time consuming.  I'm doing document 5 right now.  You can find the other 4 at this url:
