Hi all,

Sorry for the delay. Things have been slower due to work being really crazy for Faber.

The main area of interest has been in western Australia.........

----------------------------------

Australia -

On the evening of 23rd October my Cruiser fore heading for Port Headland detected ships on Radar! it was a Japanese Surface force headed by the BB Kirishima. It turned out to be a lot of huff and puff for little results on either side. I crossed the T but missed with a lot of shot and the Japanese closed but missed with lots of Torpedoes. DE Bulmer was sunk and CA Australia left with high SYS damage (made Perth 2 days later).

Both forces withdrew.

On the 24th Allied Command decided to send the big boys in....BB Revenge, Ramillies and Resolution left Perth arriving off Port Headland in the early hours on 26th October. Carnage ensued as the Japanese ships tried to suspend unloading and get away. By the end of the night at least 10 enemy ships were reported sunk (SC/PB/AP/AK) with a similar number damaged. Mission accomplished.

Port Headland is now my play thing by air. 4E based at Carnarvon can close it down at will. 12 enemy units are reported there now. Absolutely fine by me. More prisoners.

Status quo in Northern Aus.

---------------------------------------------------

CBI -
Quiet in China.

In Burma action occured on 112th Infantry Rgt postions east of Akyab on 25th and 27th October. Massive bombing raids (100 LBA escorted by 64 x Hurri) preceeded attacks by 26th Indian Bde on the cut off Japanese. The 27th saw progress as over 1/10th of the reported Japanese force was reported killed or wounded.

In the air about 10 x Zero and 10 x Friendlies were reported lost in the air.

----------------------------------------------------

Other areas -
Just 3 more weeks until all CV's are repaired and ready for action. Then we begin moving for a CentPac offensive

----------------------------------------------------

Submarine Warfare -
Just the 8 duds/misses

SS Sealion reporting sinking AK Muroran Maru with 2 torpedoes off Wakkanai.

SS KXIII damaged AP Palau Maru off Phuket.

SS Stingray was sunk with all hands off Malacca by enemy surface forces.

re: Australia

Do you know what forces are at Port Hedland? If mainly AA, BF, etc., are there any plans for an amphib assault on the base? Putting pressure on Port Hedland/Broome flank may cause Fabertong to shift forces from Katherine.

Hi all,

Hi ckammp - not 100% sure there. Ther's at least 1 x BF, 2 x rgt and 2 x AA Units. That leaves 7 units un-accounted for! I would guess there's a couple of ENG units there too as recent bombing raids by 4E have seen damage repaired relatively quickly.

Port Headland is exactly the route I plan to take. It will be far easier for me to take this as supply just doesn't trickle through enough overland for an assault through Katherine.

I have a lot of forces preparing for the invasion (will detail in due course).

--------------------------

CBI -

Further offensive action on 112th Infantry Rgt positions east of Akyab sees a further 600 Japanese casualties sustained.

--------------------------

Australia -

Port Headland was raided by 4E from Carnarvon on 29th, 30th and 31st October. P38F (with DT's) escorted them on the 29th meeting 40ish Tojo's and 15 Nick's. The results were surprising! 10 x P38 were lost for no enemy loss in the air! 7 enemy fighters were destroyed on the ground.

The 30th saw the 4E's (60 of them) attack without escort and the results were much better (go figure). 2 x B17 were shot down but 17 enemy fighters were destroyed on the ground and the runways were partially closed.

The 31st was better still with 2 fighters shot down and 13 destroyed on the ground for no loss. The runways are closed for now and my boys need a rest. No flights planned for the 1st November.

Brit BB force is en route to bombard Port Headland (ETA 2-3 days time)..........

---------------------------

Submarine Warfare -

4 x Dud/Misses (including against an AO and CL Abukuma).

Only success reported by SS Sealion damaging the oil laden TK Takane Maru NW of Hakodate.

Looks like with his CV losses that you will grab alot of bases easily now. A decisive Allied victory will be achieved.

Hi all,

Hi cookie - I can but hope! It will be a long tough struggle though untill I gather more CV's.

-------------------------------

This month has been a very quiet one overall with my CV's repairing and forces preparing for upcoming CentPac invasions. The only real action of note has been the capture of Akyab and the 4E offensive starting against Port Headland.

November doesn't see a mass of reinforcements. Only BB Indiana, a CA, CL and 3 x SS's are the highlights. By the end of this month all my my ships will be repaired and ready for action though

------------------------------

Points:

Allies: +580 points
Japanese: +341 points

Bases:

Allies: -2 (+141 points)
Japanese: +2 (+147 points)

Planes:

Allies: +146 lost
Japanese: +199 lost

Troops:

Allies: +35 lost
Japanese: +26 lost

Ships:

Allies: +2 (+13 points)
Japanese: +33 (+610 points). A lot of these are from the surface engagement at Port Headland.

---------------------------------

Sub Kills:

As expected for some reason I had appalling luck this month. Only 9 out of 61 submarine attacks either damaged or sunk an enemy ship

Dutch Boats:

PB - 3 (1 mine) (+1)
AK - 24 (+1)
TK - 3
CM - 2
DD - 4
TB - 1
DMS - 3
E - 1
APD - 1
ACM - 1 (+1)

------------------------

British Boats:

DD - 1 (mine)
AK - 1
SC - 1
PB - 1
TK - 1 (+1)

-------------------------

Fleet Boats:

AK - 43 (+3)
SC - 3
AP - 1
PB - 5
TK - 2
CM - 1
ACM - 1
E - 1
APD - 1
DD - 2
CL - 1 (Kashima)

------------------------

S-Boats:

AK - 10 (-1)
AP - 1
CM - 1
PB - 2

Hi all,

Australia -

308th BG B24's flew their first mission against Port Headland on the 4th. About 20 enemy Tojo's are on CAP daily and the airfield heavily damaged every day by either B24's from Geraldton or B17's from Carnarvon. Few heavies are lost (3 in the last 3 attacks). About 25 Tojo/Nick have been destroyed on the ground.

3 x Brit BB's visited Port Headland on the evening of the 2nd. Despite having spotters little damage was reported.

Rest of Aus is status quo with little happening.

Troops are still preparing for the invasion of Port Headland.

-----------------------------

Submarine Warfare -

Something surprising happened on the 1st November! A Japanese Midget Sub managed to penetrate the defences of Pearl Harbour and hit CV Hornet with a torpedo! A tremendous effort. Luckily damaged is slight (2 SYS, 2 FLT) and will be repaired within a week.

On my side normal service resumes with 3 duds.

Only success is reported by SS Growler reportedly sinking the empty AP Teifu Maru inbetween Tokyo and Iwo Jima.

Sneaky penguin...

Do you give your subs patrol zones with 1, 2 or 3 border hexes? If multiple, how many hexes apart? React = 1? Do you care about shallow waters/base hexes? Hand picket sub commanders?

Just curious, your getting much better results with subs than everyone else, it seems.

Hi all,

Hi VSWG - I vary sub deployment between 2 and 3 border hexes dependent on where they are patrolling. For example near Balikpapan it's a narrow straight to the east so I use 2 border hexes there.

As to total number of patrol hexes that varies as to where they are patrolling aswell. Anything from 6 hexes in total to 18. Always with react of 1 though to give them a chance to react. Don't overly care about shallow or deep water hexes. Mainly because some areas (like SRA) are mainly shallow water hexes so you have little choice. I always hand pick commanders as well. Those with the highest naval rating and secondary to that high aggression.

----------------------------------

CBI -

Little going on here except the annihilation of the remaining Japanese troops cut-off east of Akyab. A further 2000 men perished over the past 7 days.

Few aims here over the near future as recon and SigInt indicates a large amount of Japanese troops are based throughout Burma. I'll just carry on building up the frontline bases for now. I will attempt something small soon though.....

----------------------------------

Australia -

A little fortunate timing for the Japanese on the 7th November as Yamato TF neared Carnarvon and sunk 10 x AK, CL Birmingham and 2 x DD without loss. AK's were carrying supply. Bad luck as the next day 3 x Brit BB's arrived to provide cover. That would have been fun....anyhow.

Port Headland is virtually closed now. About 20 enemy Tojo's remain but they pose little threat to my 4E when they bomb (2 out of 3 days).

Ships and troops are beginning to muster in Aus for the upcoming invasion of Port Headland.

----------------------------------

Other areas -

BB North Carolina will be finished AA installs in 4 days time. That part of the USN will then head from seattle to San Francisco to join up with Lexington (repairing battle damage from CV battle). We'll then embark a few troops and head to PH to begin the assault on CentPac.

----------------------------------

Submarine Warfare -

8 x dud/missed attacks but better success towards the end of the week.....

SS Tunny reported sinking AK Misaku Maru with a torpedo near Sapporo on the 7th.

SS Wahoo sank AKL Tientsin Maru with a torpedo south of Okinawa on the 8th.

SS Tunny sank her 2nd ship of the week on the 11th - AKL Genkai Maru also near Sapporo. She was then heavily damaged by LBA and is returning to base.

SS Pickerel blew up AKL Kuramasan Maru near Wakkani on the 11th.

SS S-33 blew up AKL Hoki Maru wioth 2 torpedoes off Toyohara on the 11th.

Hi all,

Been a busy few days of the war....not so much on the frontlines but behind them things are beginning to move. In the US Seattle has been emptied with naval units moving south towards San Francisco. 3 more days until Lexington will be ready to sail. Tomorrow orders will be given for troops to embark transports at San Fran. We then head to PH.

On the other side of the Theatre 2nd British Division is en route to Australia along with 22nd East African Bde from Mombasa. These forces will both be used in the upcoming invasion of Port Headland.

-------------------------------------

CBI -

Still quietish here. I will begin small operations and air raids will commence along with the attacks on Port Headland and in CentPac. This will stretch the Japanese as much as possible.

-------------------------------------

Australia -

The Japanese are doing well in the air battle for Port Headland. They flew in more fighters and the numbers seems to have tipped the balance for now. There's about 600ish Zero/Tojo/Nick's on hand and with the high maintenance of the 4E's it's tough to get more than 30-40 to fly every day or 2. Even then I'll lose upto 3/4 of them which is not ideal with only 15 x B24 being produced a month now.....in fact that reminds me.....I find it shocking that (looking at numbers) the only LBA in production for USA right now is 15 x B24 and 20 x B25C......that's it as far as I can see....I can only dream what Faber produces per month....anyway I digress

So Port Headland. I think Faber has several ENG units in place as they're repairing damage quite quickly. That coupled with the numbers of fighters on CAP and the maintenance rates of my 4E led me to launch a sweep mission of 2 x P38F Sqns on the 15th using DT's....the results were not encouraging....7 x P38F were lost for a reported 2 x Zero and 1 x Nick. Surely P38's can do better than that! They were damn effective in PTO IRL.

As such some additional forces are being brought in......3 more 4E sqns and a P38G Sqn. The 4E will rest until fully repaired and then a more concerted knockout raid will be launched to take down enough Japanese....hopefully! ETA 5-7 days.

An enemy CV force is patrolling NW of Port Headland. Has to be mini-KB with Junyo and co. Brit CV's will take care of them.

Lots of other material is zooing across Aus from Port Headland invasion forces, to Engineers being flown into Exmouth, to construction forces upto Cooktown and Portland Roads, to a furhter FG being deployed across Aus for CAP, to another Spit Sqn upto Carnarvon for CAP.

------------------------------

Submarine Warfare -

4 x dud/missed attacks.

The good run continued on the 12/13th:

SS S-33 blew up AKL Ina Maru with 3 torpedoes off Shikuka.

SS S-31 reported sinking TK Yuho Maru with a torpedo in Shikuka Harbour...she paid the price though being heaviily damaged ASW assets leaving the scene. She sank on the 13th with the loss of all hands.

Weirdly enough SS Tunny (damagaed by LBA bomb) sank on the 14th. I say weird as she only had 54/60(41 minot FLT), 2 damage but some damn unlucky die rolls meant the flooding kept going up and up and she sank. The first Gato Class sub to be lost.

For those interested I've lost 12 subs to date in the war (4 in Aus port attacks in mid 42).....the same ratio as happened historcially.

SS Pickerel sank AK Takegawa Maru with a torpedo off Toyohara on the 13th.

On the other side SS I-11 heavily daamged the vintage PG Soerabaja approaching Carnarvon (escort for 50K supply convoy) on the 13th with a torpedo. She limped into port for emergency pumping.

SS Grayling was moderately damaged by enemy LBA off Sasebo. It might be that enemy air is becoming more of a threat. Will keep an eye on it.

Hi all,

Australia -

Relatively quiet here as my 4E rest and repair. More and more forces are stationed in Perth for the invasion of Port Hedland and the expansion of Exmouth. We're now just waiting for the forces to arrive from Columbo and Mombasa. ETA 3-4 weeks before invasion I would say.

Recon of Port Hedland shows approx 90ish enemy fighters are stationed there now. Will be a tough fight.

---------------------

Other areas -

Forces, supply and fuel are embarking at San Francisco. A vast armada will then head for PH. ETA 2 days.

A submarine had detected a Japanese TF approaching Noumea on the 18th. I had a local Surfce Combat TF stationed at Norfolk Island for this very opportunity. I ordered my ships to intercept and that they did on the 20th to great effect. La Triomphant performed brilliantly accounting for 4 of the 5 enemy ships:

Night Time Surface Combat, near Noumea at 115,160, Range 3,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
PB Kyo Maru #11, Shell hits 10, and is sunk
SC Ch 17, Shell hits 8, and is sunk
SC Ch 18, Shell hits 15, and is sunk
xAK Hokuriku Maru, Shell hits 4, Torpedo hits 2, and is sunk
xAK Kiyozumi Maru, Shell hits 4, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk

Allied Ships
DD Preston
DD Ward
DE Sands
DE King
DE Lawrence
DD La Triomphant

---------------------------

Submarine Warfare -

3 dud/missed attacks

Hi all,

Things are beginning to stir......On the 23rd over 330 ships left San Francisco for Pearl Harbour in 7 TF's....there they will join another 150ish ships and final preparations for upcoming CentPac invasions.....details in due course.

-----------------------------

Australia -

A quiet period as my 4E repair and receive maintenance in western Aus. Over 140 Japanese fighters are now reported at Port Hedland.

Ships are beginning to arrive in Aus for the Port Hedland invasion. Still a lot more to come though (150ish) and it will be at least 3-4 weeks before anything starts here in terms of invasions.

In the interim my 4E will try to regain air control over Port Hedland once they're repaired and ready.

------------------------------

Submarine Warfare -

6 Dud/misses (2 against TK's).

SS Pike blew up the large PB Suyozai Maru with a torpedo near Formosa on the 22nd.

SS Tuna sank PB Heizan Maru near Wakkanai on the 23rd.

On the 26th SS O20 (carrying mines for Singapore) blew up the small CM Tsubame with 2 torpedoes after laying her eggs off Singapore Harbour.

Later on in the day SS I-176, patrolling off Carnarvon, evaporated AM Lark with 2 torpedo hits.

Hi all,

The buildup continues in Aus and with ships heading to PH.....the main areas of action (other than the regular Japanese milk runs bombing Chinese Troops) have been under the sea:

5 Dud/misses.....

Only success reported by SS S-23 sinking PB Mikitade Maru at Shikuka on the 29th.

On the other side SS I-11 was reported sunk after being attacked by British DD's patrolling off Carnarvon.

Hi all,

November 1942 was another buildup month...the main action involved 4E gaining air supremacy over Port Hedland and then losing it whilst they had to have R&R. A small surface combat force sank 6 enemy ships at Noumea. The other action was, as per norm, from under the sea. On the Japanese side their main highlight was sinking supply ships at Carnarvon by Yamato TF.

December sees P40E's arriving in China and PB4Y's in the US. On the seas the highlights include the arrival of CL Cleveland, 3 x Sangamon class CVE and 3 x Gato SS. Also pleasing to see is the Fleet Boats receive the newer version of Surface Search Radar. Interesting to see if more attacks occur.

-----------------------------------

Points:

Allies: +481 points
Japanese: +572 points

Bases:

Allies: -1 (+122 points)
Japanese: +1 (+257 points)

Planes:

Allies: +143 lost

Ships:

Allies: +16 (+155 points). Mainly from the supply TF sunk by Yamato TF at Carnarvon.
Japanese: +27 (+179 points)

------------------------------------

Sub Kills:

A much better success ratio this month. 13 out of 42 attacks were successful.

Dutch Boats:

PB - 3 (1 mine)
AK - 24
TK - 3
CM - 3 (+1)
DD - 4
TB - 1
DMS - 3
E - 1
APD - 1
ACM - 1

-----------------------------

British Boats:

DD - 1 (mine)
AK - 1
SC - 1
PB - 1
TK - 1

------------------------------

Fleet Boats:

AK - 50 (+7)
SC - 3
AP - 2 (+1)
PB - 7 (+2)
TK - 3 (+1)
CM - 1
ACM - 1

-------------------------------

S-Boats:

AK - 12 (+2)
AP - 1
CM - 1
PB - 3 (+1)
DMS - 1

Speedy,

Just a reminder that the fleet subs when they go for their radar upgrades will change over from using Mk-10 mines to Mk-12 mines. You might want to use up any remaining Mk-10 mine stockpile before the upgrade. The Mk-10 ceases production at the end of December 1942.

Not entirely sure about this, but don't the old S-boats continue using the Mk-10's?

Thanks for your reply. Haven't hand-picked by sub captains yet (too few PPs, to many demands...), but maybe I should do it anyway...

Looking at that map of western Australia, there's an inland dot base east of Geraldton, Meekatharra, that's just 10 hexes away from Port Hedland (same as Carnarvon) and can be build up to a lvl 9 AF. If it's not too late it could be useful as another large AF since Carnarvon is overstacked.

I'm quite impressed that you get points for the Yamato sinking your ships. Deep cover agent placed in charge of the big girl?

Hi all,

I've hardly used my Fleet or S-Boats for minelaying missions. Must have 100's left in the pools....

VSWG - Changing commanders could help.....all the factors add up. You say you have limited PP's? I have over 2500! How come you have so few?

Only problem with the inland base is getting enough supplies to it. I preferred the coastal route as ships can physically bring supply to the base. Exmouth is currently being built up and will have a runway built within a week or so.

Mynok - tut tut Mynok You've clearly mis-read the format

Question - PB4Y's: I assume these are meant to be used as long range naval attack planes?

---------------------------------------

Australia -

22nd East African Bde has arrived at Perth. They'll disembark and enjoy Perth for a bit whilst awaiting the arrival of other forces.

My 4E's at Carnarvon and Geraldton are almost all ready for action. Probably another 3 or so days before all machines are ready to go.

BB Prince of Wales has finally repaired all battle damage sustained at the start of the war and is leaving Cape Town for Australia.

----------------------------------------

CentPac -

The San Fran ships and men will be at PH in 4 days time. BB Indiana is also scheduled to arrive at the same time from Balboa.

Forces will then disembark and rest for a couple of days before re-embarking in assault formation for upcoming offensives.......

----------------------------------------

Submarine Warfare -

4 dud/misses.

SS S-23 had an eventful day on the 1st. She damaged troop laden AK Tateisi Maru with a torpedo east of Toyohara and then later in the day obliterated the 99 tonne SC CHa-19 near Shikuka.

SS S-35 also attacked the troop carrying freighters and left AK Mantai Maru listing and heavily damaged.

SS Shad reported sinking the Gozan Maru class freighter Shinkoku Maru off Donggala on the 3rd.

SS Sculpin also reported sinking a Gozan Maru class freighter on the 4th - Bisan Maru off Sendai, Japan.

I have had good results with the PB4Y on nav attack (USN heavy bombers are excluded from our no 4E nav attack below 10000ft rule). These bombers are my equivalent to the enemy´s Betties and Nells, while I´ve got only 6 or 7 squadrons (means 84 bombers) employed and the enemy probably fields a couple of hundred torp bombers. I´m using them with 70 lownav skill crews and they usually chew up freighters if they get in range, but I haven´t seen a freighter in range for months.

If these bombers aren´t restricted by a house rule then I would reserve them for nav attack only, just too precious for attacks on bases and that´s what the USAAF heavies are for. At some point you will find out though that the heavies are far too few and without any USAAF medium bombers that can be used you really are lacking bombers (or space to put them onto as each of the heavies accounts for two medium bombers in regards of ac stacking).

Speedy, you must be slipping in your old age. I would have expected a "dumbass" from you over this one.

Hi all,

Hi Castor - Thanks. Results sound interesting. I don't use 4E on Nav Attack but thinking that PB4Y should be exempt since that's the role they had.

Mike - What can I say? Must be getting sloppy in my older age

---------------------------

CBI -

Main point of note here is the arrival of 26,000 tonnes of supply by convoy at Akyab. This makes Akyab fully open for action. Still be a while before we move in strength here as the Japanese have a mass of force throughout Burma.

3rd Tank Division on the move in China. Wonder where she'll end up.......not much else happening here at the mo.

----------------------------

Australia -

The gates of hell opened against the Japanese at Port Hedland on the 9th December. The day started off with 72 x P38F/G sweeping over the Port Hedaland area. Over 70 x Tojo and 20 x Nick were reported in the skies. Battles were intense with the butchers bill including 12 x P38 and a reported 16 enemy fighters.

81 x B17 then appeared on the scene and deposited hell on the Japanese controlled airfields. A reported 35 enemy fighters were destroyed on the ground. Then over 30 x B24's added to the carnage. 2 bombers were lost due to mechanical failures.

The following 2 days saw the battle continue....battle only in name as no enemy fighters could take off from the battered runways. A further 40 fighters were destroyed and the base is now closed. A a Submarine and Mine Tender were reported sunk in the small port.

Estimates indicate 120 enemy planes have been destroyed for about 20 friendly over the past 3 days. The 12th will be a rest day before we keep this up.

This has gone about as well as I could expect.

The British 2nd Division will arrive at Perth on the 12th.

We now have to await remaining transports and supply freighters from Cape Topwn (ETA 2 weeks) and the Australian 4th Division from Adelaide then we begin operations.

--------------------------

CentPac -

All CV's and invasion forces are now at PH. The troops have disembarked and we're waiting for 8 Cruisers to install 40mm mounts (ETA 12 days). We'll begin loading up in 10 days time (destination secret for now).

I will be 2 x BB down as I forgot to turn off the modification for 2 x Wee Vee class ETA for completion 210 days....grrr.

--------------------------

Submarine Warfare -

8 x Dud/misses

The only success is reported by SS S-44 sinking AK Unkai Maru #3 with 2 torpedoes near Wake Island.

On the other side we've had a lot of cat and mouse games around PH. At least 3 enemy subs have been engaged by ASW forces. Many misses by Japanese subs but DD Craven broke in 2 with heavy loss of life on the 8th December. No reported sinkings of Japanese.

SS I-29 was reported sunk by ASW forces near Columbo on the 11th.

It's only April 1942 in my PBEM. So far I've used every PP to buy restricted "stuff" (planes, base forces, LCUs, ...) so that I can plug the holes in my feeble early war defenses.

I never had a problem with setting the "get supply" arrow to max in an inland base. After a couple of turns (not always the next turn) the requested amount of supplies (and often more) did arrive.

Hi all,

Hi VSWG - thanks. With my coastal bases built up now though there'd be little point in developing the inland base. Thanks for the input though with regard to supply pulling!

------------------------------

Australia -

The subjugation of Port Hedland continues daily with B24's from Geraldton on 1 day and B17's from Carnarvon on the next. 54th/A Division was also targetted one day and the port facilities on another (claiming an SS and an ACM). Port Hedland is totally surpressed and can remain so. About 30 abandoned and damaged enemy planes have been destroyed on the ground.

The final forces are heading to Perth including many empty transports and freighters along with the fully repaired BB Prince of Wales (3 days out).

Engineers have constructed a small runway at Exmouth. Need a small harbour built then freighters can dock and bring in vital supplies and engineering vehicles.

------------------------------

CentPac -

4 more days and all repairs and upgrades will have been completed on much needed Cruisers at PH.

Troops will begin embarkation in 2 days time. The next post will break down what is heading to where....ooooh the suspense

------------------------------

Submarine Warfare -

A bad run of duds/misses - 10 (including 4 against Tankers and 2 more (4 in total now!) against TK Gen'yo Maru. Grrr.)

The 17th was a good day though as 2 subs hunted a TK convoy east of Cam Ranh Bay. Furst to attack was SS Truant heavily damaging the empty AO Tsurumi with 2 torpedoes. No confirmed sinking but I suspect she'll go.

Later on in the morning SS KXV fired 4 torpedoes at TK Manei Maru. 1 hit leaving her dead in the water. She followed up with 2 more fish 1 of which hit and put her down.

Interesting tidbit. ACM Chimo blew up at Los Angeles during as mine accident!

Speedy,

Just a reminder that the fleet subs when they go for their radar upgrades will change over from using Mk-10 mines to Mk-12 mines. You might want to use up any remaining Mk-10 mine stockpile before the upgrade. The Mk-10 ceases production at the end of December 1942.

Alfred

Not all of them upgrade to the MK 12 in 42-only a little more than half. Many (including fleet boats) will still carry the Mk 10 until later upgrades in 1943 so you do not have to worry so much. Besides the Mk 12 has about twice the killing power of the Mk 10. It is almost as powerful as a long lance. Deadliest Allied mine.

Speedy, you sould be using some subs to mine. Say about 5% of your force. Best use is to lay a few mines in places where you expect Japanese subs to transit or other important ships like tankers or warships. I don't mine harbors much as they always have an AM on hand. Your small minefields will degenerate fairly fast but you will get some kills. I have gotten about half a dozen Japanese subs this way (as has my opponent with my subs). Move your fields around as once he loses a ship he will just sweep the hex. And as said, the MK 12 mine which come on line late 42-early 43 is a wonderful thing to have. One hit will put a carrier in the yard for four months.

You get MK 13 air dropped mines in big numbers starting January 1. They are a lot of fun but can only be dropped at enemy ports

Hi all,

Thanks crsutton - interesting. Didn't know that the Mk-12 was that powerful! I will have to keep an eye on this and maybe start doing the odd Mk-12 minelaying run. How do the air minelaying missions work. It's only for 4E right?

-------------------------

Australia -

The buildup continues at Perth. We're now just awaiting 40 ships (AK/AP/AM) to arrive in 2 TF's. They're about 4/5 days away.

In the meantime B24's and B17's bomb Port Hedland daily keeping the airfields closed and spreading the love to the defending troops as well.

For those wondering still status quo in the center at Katherine. Both have roughly 1500AV there.

I'm starting to buildup bases in NE Aus (Cooktown/Portland Roads) for future potential operations and support on New Guinea.

-------------------------

CentPac -

Troops are staring to board AP's and AK's in preparation for the first offensive in CentPac. Thanks to Alfred and his earlier calculations I have divided the troops amongst the optimum number of ships to ensure maximum disembarkaton on day 1.

Here's the roster for Operation Swift:

1st USMC Division
2nd USMC Eng Rgt
1st USMC ARM Bn
1st USMC Para Bn

Now.....as I keep you in suspense.....where do you think I'm going to invade?

ETA for set off is over the next 3-4 days.

---------------------------

Submarine Warfare -

7 Dud/misses.

SS Silversides sank PB Lushan Maru off Wakkanai on the 21st.

SS Truant heavily damaged AK Nitiyo Maru east of Quinhon on the 21st.

SS KXVI blew up AK Tatumiya Maru off Groot Natoena on the 23rd.

On the 24th SS Trusty achieved my first sub vs sub kill of the war whilst traversing the Malacca Strait to Columbo to refuel. She spotted the already damaged SS I-29 (damaged by ASW forces off Columbo recently) and a torpedo sent I-29 to the bottom. Well done.

2 of my subs have been damaged by ASW forces operating near Singapore. Both are returning to Columbo for repairs. SS Swordfish is touch and go if she'll make it.
