I have very few options and I dont like committing what little I have on a hunch.

He has committed KB and Mini KB to a SWPAC/South DEI including heavy gas guzzling BB support

The time factor is significant because the first 30 days are when the allies are at their absolute weakest.

He has used this time to isolate Malaya - fine and to hit Ambon and Ternate and take Rabaul quickly.

I dont know but it feels like either a massive bluff or a PM/Darwin/East Australia offensive.

I have lost the TF that passed Rabaul heading SW but I would bet its en route to PM which is very weak.

Not sure what to do my gut says this is real but Sigint has said nada. Not sure what to do.

I have mined Darwin and ordered 3rd Motor Bde to the end of the rail line in case I decide to reinforce other steps I need to think abouit

He grabbed Ambon early on me, too. Take a look at our AAR to see what he's likely to do.

I had a look Herwin but couldnt see it.

He para dropped onto Andaman Islands this turn.

I am now totally confused.

Andaman Islands would indicate an India or Ceylon strategy but he is going to methodically in Malaya for that I think it could be a diversion I guess.

So much force committed to Ambon still makes me think Timor/Darwin/Bali but no sign of heavy unit LCU's yet and he is hung up on Ambon so it might be a total bluff or really an attack on Perth.

String has me a bit confused - I am reinforcing Darwin as thats the most likely candidate but I would feel a lot better about it with some sigint confirmation

He did that to me, too. Get your garrisons ready in Ceylon and Northern Australia. He likes to use the KB aggressively, and he likes to capture forward bases early by coup de main. Once Singapore falls, he will move very fast.

18th Brit is now about 50% of two Bdes unloaded those big xAP's are a pig to unload as they cannot dock.

Ambon still stands which is good so we will see what happens next

Well last few days have been interesting but not overly productive.

String raided Darwin when Ambon file and caught the convoywith 18th British Div unloading.

So he knows the Div is at Darwin, he knows I have now defended Darwin so he will go to Perth - bet on it.

I would rather he was int eh dark as to where the Div was ah well.

p.s. most of the Div got ashore in one piece the more I think on it knowing String he will now abandon the Darwin attack (if he ever intended to go there and it wasnt me misreading the tea leaves) and go elsewhere Perth probably maybe Townsville/Cairns or maybe his target all along was India.

I love guessing games

6th Aus Div will move to India and stay there if I get a chance in the future I will swith it with 18th British Div.

18th Div is my one ready reserve and I hate that he knows where I have committed it - really really not good.

Anyway cest las vie - in this game I am abandoning New Cal and PM to their fate troops are digging in on Java as fast as they can we shall wait and see what happens

the only good thig is the Buffalos defending Darwin were shredded but they took 10 KB aircraft with them every little helps....

Ambon held on just long enough for my army to get ashore in one piece I now have 500 AV at Darwin - with 200 more en route I doubt he will invade I suspect he will somewhere else

His style reminds me of Slim. Be prepared to counterattack.

OK looks like he is hitting Darwin.

Lots and lots and lots of TF's at sea all heading the direction of Darwin - best guess 18th British Div is in for the fight of its life.....

Armour can make the cross Australia journey reasonably quickly.

So far 3rd Motor Bde is en route and 22nd Recce Bn's armoured cars are almost there

As soon as I am sure he is hitting Dawin 1st Motor Bde will also leave to move cross country to the sound of the guns.

The next echelon of reinforcements will be the Cavalry Bdes and at least one of the Indpt Armoured Regts

I will update on the garrison and my view of its chances tonight.

My main worry is lack of airbases Katherine is only level 1 and I cannot get it up quickly enough to be involved as I have no dedicated construction engineers.

I am sufficiently worried that I will probably air bridge the NZ Construction Company straight into Katherine

It feels really weird to be in a fight to the death already its only just hit Jan 42 !!!!

Actually this is about as good as it gets for the allies. A main Japanese thrust at the one base where I have decent forces.

I am diverting refugees from Singapore they were going to go to India I think I will send them to Perth instead just in case.

The only question is how much force can 18th British handle on its own I have level 2 forts (94% to lvl 3)

The Division is at about 70% but with a full complement of Infantry.

I have 4 Bns of Australian troops there as well.

19th (A weak Militia Bn)
2/4th MG
Gull and whats left of Sparrow

Its not a lot

At least Curtin cannot complain that the British are not committing to help Australia.

22nd Recce bn is about a week away from Tennant Creek but it only has about 20 Armoured Cars.
3rd Motor Bde is probably 2 or 3 weeks away its is a significant unit.

Thats all the help that 18th Brit can expect.

The only question is how many Japanese Divisions can a single British Division stand up to....

I am currently covering Fenton and Katherine as well as I dont want paras taking them.

I will need to be canny if I am to cling on at Darwin and remember that he can almost certainly reinforce quicker than I can.there is also a base North of the southern railhead I will need to garrison it just in case he tries to do a deep envelopment.

Look at Slim's invasion of Burma. He relies on his tempo overwhelming you. Your goal should be to force him to commit so you can run a guerilla campaign. His supply lines will be tenuous.

In about 40 days the Queen of the Desert makes a reappearance at present I have 12 Matildas in the pool - in 40 days I get twelve more enough to equip 3rd Motor Bde that unity will spearhead the relief of Darwin the only question can 18th British and the odds and sods of the Militia hold on until they get there.....

I am worried about my LOC an attack on Normanton driving south could dislocate my relief effort especially if it was a recon or cavalry unit that I would need to hunt down.

I will need to watch my loc paras and recon units are my main worries.

Below is the reason to be carefull with the Australian Militia Divisions

As you can see the current TOE is very dependnet on the 2 Field Regts and the Vickers MG Bn as well as Bn level MMG's there are no LMG's in this structure.

Almost no AA protection, no combat engineers and damned few ordinary ones....

Basically good AV when begind prebuilt forts with good aircover but not units you want to get into a battle of manouver.

The upgraded TOE is better its more or less a 9 Bn CW standard with a larger proportion of Combat Engineers than a similar Indian Div but without the added 10th security Bn that was never adopted by the Australians.

Good AA units not to many not to few, some 3" morters to back up the jungle guns that help with the short 25 pounders and a full RE Field Park Company to back up the Combat Engineers.

Takes a while to get there though and you will struggle to bring all 5 Militia Divs up to this standard (actually I think all 5 will prove impossible)

Now take a look at the bottom panel only 1 !!! modern arty piece the rest are WW1 vintage 18 pounders, understrength without even a full set of small arms for the infantry squads low experience.

Not in great shape - Australia will quickly make good these deficiencies but not yet.....

Notice the reduced number of A/T guns not something the Australians really needed for jungle fighting

OK my CD guns and mines were dissapointing at Darwin didnt achieve much and he unloaded the best part of two reinforced Divisons in a single day.

Thats a lot of firepower he was obviously going for overkill.

I am not sure if 1 reinforced British Div can stand up to 2 full Japanese Divs I need to reinforce as quickly as possible.

I can add a composite Bde of Australian troops (19th and Gull plus 2/4th MG Bn) but meas taking a risk on my LOC to parachute assault

22nd Recon Bn is about a week away

3rd Motor Bde probably two to three weeks away.

I suspect this battle will be resolved int he next 5 days.

Question - Japanese 8" and BB guns can they re arm at Kendari/Ambon or will they need to go further north.

Fuel can he have enough fuel in theatre yet

I suspect this battle may well be resolved on logistics - he may have struck before he can sustain the operation - its my main hope at present.

Andy

String has pulled in 2 Regts of 2nd Div, the full 38th Div and a Regt of 56th Div. thats quite a lot of force to commit so far out on a limb. If I can hold him off this could prejudice his attack on Java later
