If you go there, I wouldn't bother with Tennant Creek.

Why not take Normanton a week earlier than Darwin, every allied player expects an attack on Darwin , taking Gloncurry will make Darwin untenable . Unless you fear his air power.

Phase II - Part 1

Booooring! In AE everybody are attacking Northern Australia.

Northern Australia is far more important for the Japanese than India IMO.

Lol, maybe I should change my plans to entertain you better!-)
- Australia in itself is not the only target and Andy has to defend it and doing so will be challenging for him for quite some time to come.
Think it will take some time for the full plan to get into effect and to see what we can get out of the strategic situation.

Yes, most likely I can go in the main door at Darwin, but I got some troops to spare for the other bases.

In AE you have a handful of realistic options:
1. Something including India / Burma
2. Australia
3. New Caledonia, Fiji, New Zealand and the Pacific islands
4. Pearl Harbour
5. Aleutians - Alaska

Both 1 and 4 are quite extreme; Aleutians - Alaska is truly a bore.
A combination of 2 and 3 opens a lot of interesting possibilities.

While I can see 1,2 and 3 being a good idea for the Japanese, 4 wouldn´t make much sense to me (I wouldn´t really care in a PBEM as an Allied player) and 5 is the worst of all as I can´t see any gains from doing it as the Japanese and I can´t see any problem for the Allied in losing it either.

Indeed, options may seem limited - even more so if you're really critical.
Taking PH could cost US a lot of hardware and delay an advance in the Central Pacific, still the risk and potential cost to Japan could be severe.

True, but I just found out that Andy is defending from Katherine - he may bring in more troops here, doubt he can stop me even from behind the river but it will take time for me to get ready to kick him out, I would love to capture those troops though. While we land, advance and prepare - the landings in Normanton will take place. Bringing some fast tank units to spearhead the advance and blocking the supply / retreat routes from Katherine.

Not sure how fast it will be to advance from there, not the greatest roads - think it will be hard for Andy to defend the area, can't take troops out of Cairns unless he wants me to swing in from PM!

- Not a lot of airfields in the area, need to expand the ones I take asap.
Not sure Andy is in a position to launch heavy strikes from Cairs, we'll see!

Invasion of Darwin went ok - some large coastal defensive guns; 6 and 9.2 inch.
Didn't cause to serious damage, had the Nagato and Mutsu bombard the defenders.

So the bulk of the army is ashore, opposition: No enemy LCU, just fortress and base force troops.
Paras landed on the dot base beyond Darwin.

Will now secure Derby and move on to Normanton and the Pacific Island.
When these operations have been completed there is other business to attend to; troops on Java (now being reinforced) will be ready for deployment together with the reserves at Truk and Kwajalein.

- NB! Absolutely no use of KB against ground targets.
The grunts on the ground have to manage on their own and with what LBA support we can provide.

Things are heating up a bit as we invade Normanton!

Another Guards division arrived at Camhran Bay today - will move it first to Java and then load it up together with the rest of the troops there as they complete their Bandoeng assignment. These troops make up our reserve and can be committed were needed. The Guards Tank Division when it arrives in 3 weeks will be sent to Burma and together with the 1st Imp Division make up the core of the defenses there.

In a few days the carrier Junyo arrives and will soon sail together with a new CS and 4 destroyers to join the Fleet carriers.
The Hosho will be sent back to the Home Islands to continue her role as training carrier - decided that we needed all available guns for Phase I.

Forgot to mention: Moved KB carriers to support Normanton with a heavy LRCAP and made an exception from the rule of no ground attacks. Since there are so few and weak enemy LCU's at Normanton I will give our grunt a helping hand in blowing up that Cav Rgt. - The hope is that we can gun down the remainder of those dive bombers since they don't go into production for some time yet.

Enemy air attacks were stronger and more potent that expected; especially since 32 Banshee dive bombers from Cairns
were able to get through our to weak and pretty impotent LRCAP put up by the escort carriers. Even the B-17's landed hits; 8 transports hit - 2 sank outright. Not good :-\ At least our troops and supplies were ashore.

I am not going to bite with the Indian trickery. I'd love you to attack India.

Impressive training of ASW, you must be at about the top end of their ability to learn through theory now though?

Maybe we got a deal Mr Wob!-)
Can train individual skills to 70, and even with 2 individual skills at 70 the total exp may still be less than 70 and this leaves room for further improvements me thinks.

Also set all fighters in KB to LRCAP - this caused ALL naval fighters (Claudes and Zeros) to be set to 40% LRCAP.

I never put carrier fighters on LRCAP to defend the carriers. Just use CAP 90.

The LRCAP was for Normanton - selected all fighters in KB and it resulted in ALL Navy fighters on map was set to the same LRCAP ratio!

Tomorrow the Junyo arrives, together with the light carriers she will lead the close support Carrier Division.
Need to free up the KB for more important tasks.

Disrupted

I'm not getting wise about how ground combat works; last turn I attacked at Bandoeng with 2200 AV - only crack troops with the best leaders, 2 Army HQ and plenty supplies. Modified assault value was some 700
- Losses weren't heavy but units like this division went up from 15 to 84 in fatigue and disruption.

Ok, moving Southern Seas HQ south to Palembang - with it's 8 hex range it will provide a support bonus to our next attack.
Let's see if that does the trick! Got a fairly high prep for Bandoeng.

Need to figure out how to crack this little nut!

Should test it a bit more first, but it wasn't tempting to repeat it in game as I had to manually adjust all units.
- If someone wants to try to re-create the issue try to toggle ALL fighters in TF and HEX to different LRCAP settings and check your other naval fighter units.

Did you use TF or hex? That might be critical to determining if it is a glitch or not.

Bandoeng is mountain so you're going to struggle there. You'll just have to keep punching. Rest, pound, rest, pound. No easy way through that stuff. Makes it pretty clear that the Japanese need to land centrally and take the mountain redoubts early then spread to the island's ends.

Think I clicked both buttons, first chose TF but meant to use the HEX button.
Just need to click a lot of try to re-create it.

Ready to hit Bandoeng again tomorrow, if still a hard nut the 6th Guards Div and a tank regiment will
join the fun. Phase II part 3 will commence in 3 weeks and does not include the Bandoeng troops, in 5-6 weeks they
have to be rested and ready for part 4 though.

The Junyo arrived with crack pilots and will be heading out soon together with a seaplane tender, 4 destroyers and 2 heavy cruisers. Looking forward to organize things a bit, ships and troops are whizzing all over the map. One challenge is to find enough cargo ships and tankers to get all fuel, oil and resources moving from the newly occupied territories. Offensive actions require so much supplies that only 1/3 to 1/2 of the ships can be freed for this purpose.

Does he get experience with each bombardment - and do those troops need more exp?

It's possible, but didn't think the Chinks got a large replacement rate for their troops.
Not going to fight them in urban areas unless I have to as long as I can trap them elsewhere.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Mar 31, 42

Nothing of interest to report...need another turn to unload the Southern Area Army at Palembang and rest the troops at Bandoeng.

Found that the 40 LRCAP issue was worse than I thought; not only naval ac got this setting - ALL my fighters got it and had to go around the entire map resetting them. Lost a couple of handful of ac from this and many units have high fatigue like this one:

Aren't there some clear all buttons on the land-based and naval-based air screens?

Couldn't find one when I looked...would anyway have meant that I would have to go over all fighter units to adjust them.

Highlight from the next couple of turns:

Severly reducing enemy's fighting capabilities at Bandoeng but our strength is still reduced from 2200 to 7-800 each time we attack despite all my best efforts. Forts down to level 1 - expect to finish this within 2 weeks.

Will try not to disappoint the JFB's Cribtop!-)

Oz is such a huge continent, so we'll do as old Heinz recommends again; boot'em, don't spatter'em!
When Andy makes a stand on the coast he will be bypassed, bombarded and forced to surrender - and that's how we'll keep going until we got em cornered. He will need supplies to keep his troops fighting and bombers operational and the hunting grounds should be rich!

If we are outmanouvered we have to be ready to pull back, no die hard stand and fight orders; no way out for Andy on the other hand, he will have to stay and fight.

Since Andy is pulling back both sides are building up their strength, when the face off finally comes it will be bloody!

Some action in Burma;

If Andy goes onto the offensive in Burma in 42 I'll be tempted to land a powerful army behind him and attemtp to trap him.
Only time will show if this is realistic.
