Invasions

I surely notice the abscence of the Jap amph bonus!
We unload only a portion of our troops and equipment today and take some coastal battery hits.
Nothing serious but we need to stay on station for 2 more days before we can think about capturing Gerladton!

Good thing; opposition is weak and only a small base force to support enemy bombers. Half the Banshee's should be
damaged or shot down by now.

Is it better / faster to unload supplies from ambibious type TFs in small ports than as cargo type?

Not sure if we should invade Port Augusta or / and Adelaide direct.
It's really painful to get ashore and it will most likely take a week to gather our troops to get moving toward Adelaide.

Melbourne and nearest nearby size 3 or bigger AF is 9-10 hexes away from Adelaide, so we should mainly have to contend with local air attacks while some mediums and heavies will stage from Melbourne.

Hmmm, this is a difficult decision!

Yes, always use amphibious for missions to bases with low level ports.

AP's and AK's help as well, use only xAK/P's and you may not be able to unload heavy equipment in very small ports.

Change in Plans

With the enemy 27th Division at Geraldton that front will become a holding action; a rear guard action will secure Carnarvon.
Andy is going to need a lot of firepower to drive us back.

To counter this the following actions will be taken:
- I'm actually a bit pleased with this development!

Question... Is this a kesselschlacht operation wherein allowing him to bring formations into the Perth region will merely bring them into the jaws of your envelopement and destruction or do you not have sufficient forces at hand for this?

I'm just asking because depending on the type of operation you want to run it may not make sense to cut the railroad at Kalgoorlie quite yet.

Yes, in a way that's how it will become; the challenge is that if Andy reinforce Western Oz to heavily I will have problems diverting enough troops to capture Perth and at the same time put the lid over SE OZ. Everything hangs in the balance I guess!
- The railroad won't be cut in another 2 weeks or so, Andy is making an effort to open the road to Alice Springs and will soon kick our paras out of the roadblock. Think I should be ready to capture Alice before he can reinforce though, our reinforcements is just a hex out.

See you are posting on both threads Nemo, loose lips shink ships you know so pls be careful with giving advice both ways!-)

Ok, some more pain around Geraldton as we finish unloading and start to move our ships back home.
We loose a handful today including a Mutsuki class destroyer that had to be scuttled after taking a 1000lb bomb
down the chimney.

The main event was the interdition of an enemy convoy - unescorted - by 2 fleet destroyers and a light cruiser.
Oh come mayhem!-)

The Yamato arrived today, will be laid up as a luxury hotel for the top brass including compartments for 500 Geisha girls!-)
Now I'll let the naval construction points grow a bit before finding a carrier to accelerate.

How many carriers have you accelerated already? In my game I've expanded the naval production a bit and halted all of the submarines, and as a result after Yamato finishes then only the Shinano and the CVL' that arrives in '45 shall remain unaccelerated.

I'm mostly just asking a couple of questions, not giving any meaningful advice ( I have stated the utterly bleeding obvious a couple of times ). I know how to OPSEC but if you are uncomfortable with me posting in both I'll desist. I don't mind.

The rule I try to follow is - pick one of the following:

01 - Read both (read only no posting)

or

02 - Read and Post in one only - but do not read or post in the other.

This avoids even unconscious hints carrying over from one side of the AAR to the other.

If I read both I try to post only about general stuff, especially if the author is asking for general advice or rules/technical advice. When the subject is specific situations, I only post if I haven't read the other AAR for a long time and truly haven't a clue about what's current.

YMMV

While I agree pretty much with what you've both said I'll point out that asking PzB what sort of operation he's trying to run is hardly giving any intel away.

ANY operation is either a diversion/delay, an attempt to gain territory or an attempt to kill enemy forces ( or some minor mix of the three ). Let's not over-react with the, you can't post in two threads thing. You can't post strategic advice etc in 2 threads but is someone seriously saying you can't ask a barn-door question like that?

That's good etiquette Joe! These are important turns in the game, so it's important to keep Andy guessing.
You all know what's being discussed in Andy's thread, so I'm sure you're playing it safe Nemo.

I accelerated 2 Katsuragi class carriers today; will follow the development of naval construction points.
- I don't have many subs to turn off, only those that have started their production run can be turned off.
Also love my submarine service and wouldn't like to loose a single boat

When the Hiyo, Ryujo and Musashi are completed I should be able to accelerate the Shinano, Taiho and remaining Katsuragi's.
NB! In scen 2 the Shinano is a Taiho class carrier and the left over steel is used for another few light cruisers.

Ok todays main news: We finished the convoy of AKL's and found another large cluster of unescorted ships south of the KB.
Andy told me his AKL's had run out of fuel; this must be the case with this large convoy as well, fleeing head over heels as we came to pay them a visit! I didn't know about this convoy so it came as a surprise - another 20 ships sent to Davy Jones locker for the cost of 1 Kate bomber....

The only drawback is that we spent way to many torpedoes; I now have to turn them off again and only turn them on when I expect to engage enemy carriers. I really need a switch for these precious weapons 1. When enemy ships are spotted use only bombs against non-navy vessels. - If there are incidents of mistaken identities that would be fine...but wasting the Empires long lances on dead in the water targets is poodoo!

Invasions

Ok we're invading Carnarvon; just a minor enemy presence her, but it has the potential of holding numerous airfields.
The importance of this base increased as we got bogged down further south. Now this is our supply line and retreat path if it should come to that. I will also build airfields and provide air support from here.

I'd be interested to know if your heavy equipment unloaded at Geraldton with those xAKs.

Also, Kates don't carry long lances.

I'm a bit surprised KB isn't out of sorties completely with all the fighting. How are you resupplying?

easily explained I guess, CLEAR terrain (or desert?). Artillery is a killer in a clear hex, no matter which side. It has been toned down (or at least should have been toned down) with the latest patch as there was a bug enabling every artillery unit firing at EVERY unit in the enemy´s stack. I still wouldn´t want to meet a dozen artillery units in a clear hex after the patch.

I don't buy the arty casualties; we've dug in for over a week in the Geraldton base hex which is a built up town and irrigated? hex. Too few guns and too heavy casualties still.

KB got plenty of sorties, have hardly spent 20% of total - just not too many torps left.
Resupply is with the replenishment TF, when troops are ashore we need to RTB to replenish strikes.

Most heavy equipment was unloaded at Geraldton, some was lost and I'm moving a 65th Bde remnant back to base as we
withdrew out ships before all was unloaded. Looks like Andy has moved 2 of the 3 divisional regiments out of Geraldton - they're heading south.

Tomorrow we're landing at Esperance; was spotted by enemy AC today. It's a size 3 port and we got an LSD, AP's and AK's.
Hope we manage to unload in fashion this time.

Thx Venividi, hope it doesn't turn to exciting!-)

Do you have real APs? Or are they xAPs? If they are real APs, where did you get them? I went looking to see if any of my xAPs would convert, I didn't find any.

Are you planning to land in non-base hexes?

What do you mean real AP's? With AP's I mean troop transports, Japan doesn't have anything else and nothing convert to APAs!?
- Yes, I'm planning to land over a broader invasion front like in Normandy from Port Augusta to Adelaide area.

My fear is that I will be stuck unloading for 2 weeks while getting bombed and attacked so heavily that all troops suffer 50% casualties and get bogged down. - Even that is ok if we can capture our targets.

Just to clarify, an xAP is a passenger liner. An AP is an actual naval vessel that unloads much faster than an xAP. An APA, of course, is even better.

Japan does have a number of AKs to start with and some xAKs can be converted early on. In June a whole lot of xAKs can be converted to AKs. I have found the AKs unload very fast. I have a special amphibious TF of AKs and LSDs. The only problem with using AKs rather than APs is that disruption accumulates twice as fast: 2 per day rather 1 per day.

When moving 120k troops you have to bring all your tubs....including some AK-t's but not that many.
We will have to go in and win the day with numbers me thinks, just hope the price won't be to heavy.

As an invader , you don't get the port facilities to help landing imo, so unloading from ambhibious TF's will be the same rate everywhere unless you capture the ports then they'll help enormously.

as for advice ?? sorry i can't help and i suspect no-ones ever tried this post the japanese landing bonus expiring, maybe just have to suck it and see.

CAP - I have seen some Japanese xAK's that convert to non x AP's. Not noticed any xAP's being able to convert mind you , I have v limited exp as Japanese however so could very well be wrong.

It is too late now, but I found that if possible, xAKs are better than xAPs because of the shallow loading. The more deeply you load, the longer to unload. Of course, you already know that.

Fighting in and around the outskirst of the town I guess, after a week there would be trenches and some fixed lines.
Each gun claiming 10 casualties; that means a direct hit with each round.

Yes I know Rob, capturing Adelaide would be a must early on but the causalties from continued coastal arty rounds would wreck a lot of ships and troops. I can land 4 divisions there, the question is if we should go for 2 and land the rest in nearby towns with less defences, then we would be able to get our bridge head and race to the support of our troops in Adelaide.

Today we went ashort at Esperance, looks like a Marine Battalion is there; if they stall an engineer regiment and a full inf div I'll turn about and go home!-) Dropping some para's to disrupt the base to the north, don't want a wagon load of troops on the beaches tomorrow.

Geraldton is until we build the base to the north we just captured...
KB has provided air cover over Esperance; at 10 hexes only level bombers from Perth can hit us so I feel reasonably safe to remove it now as we have already started landings and established a weak enemy defense.
