Some good news: First major Tojo formations sweep Akyab and massacre the enemy.
At least 33-3 in A2A, that's 10-1

I made 2 things to achieve this;
a)upgraded the largest groups with 36 and 48 ac to the new Tojo fighter.
b)filled up the units with crack pilots; the first unit that went in has a lot of 75-90 exp jocks.

Andy will struggle with these wasps in the time to come.
Now I need to place enough of them in Burma and Oz to keep air supremacy for another 6-8 months.

We also continue to harass the enemy armor moving up from Geraldton. Without air support they're very vulnerable
even with the KB heading away. Got reserves on the way to Carnarvon to boost defenses; think we can hold here.

In the Central Pacific Andy move west and intercept the crippled Ryujo and sinks her with 7 bombs.
The 2 escorting destroyers are also sent to the bottom. The reduced KB flees east and is already 13 hexes away from the enemy carriers. Think we should get away now, fortunately we fuelled not long ago.

Hm, the KB will most likely go home for some R&R now; US carrier strength is very weak and this is a good time to upgrade.
In the next year we need to Keep KB at Truk as a watchdog to prevent Allied offensive. No more Oz adventures.
- The surface fleet will try to harass enemy convoys in the Indian Ocean though, don't think Andy has a single carrier there.

All in all, a good escape. The pilots saved are worth their weight in Gold (which at $1,220/oz is saying something).

Two words - Mega KB. It hurts to give up the fast raiding capability of Mini-KB, but they just have trouble in a stand up fight.

PzB, IMO the most important thing you have to do in Burma is to focus on your jungle bases South of the Mandalay area and build high fort levels (level 6 preffered). I´ve got my Allied offensive going into Burma in 11/42 now and without having any supply problems (the supply routine isn´t working outside of bases) I took Shwebo (clear hex, fort 4) against four enemy divisions in just a couple of days due to having 3000av, lots of tanks and a 100% preparation. Also got a 2000av Army around Prome (which I took after the enemy abandoned it) so in total I´ve got 5000av marching around in Burma and my opponent is on full retreat. As my fighters are shot out of the sky by Tojos just like Andy´s last turn I´m more or less not using my airforce at all, while my opponent used a couple of bomber daitais to bomb my ground troops. But this doesn´t make any difference. You can effectively bomb a single unit in clear terrain but you can´t harm an entire Army, not to talk about the nil-effect in non clear hexes anyway. My advice is to focus on non clear terrain hexes and build up your defenses there, forts are your friend. IMO you can not defend Burma in open hexes against the Allied when they get ample supply through the jungle. And if a couple of divs get routed just once, your house of cards can collapse in no time. And I´ve only sent 5000av, which is by far not what I could have sent. Air supremacy in Burma means nothing for the Japanese, all that counts are supplied LCUs.

Hi PzB! Long time fan here. I have read closely both, this, and Your last AAR with Andy Mac (partly).

I have a question: did Your MiniKB took previously any air attacks, in current raid? Because looking at screen it expended almost half of its AAA ammunition. I actualy thought, that it was repaired in one of earlier patch, but if just two attacks from equivalent of 2 carriers expend THAT MUCH, I can see repeat of my WITP experience, with loosing most of ammunition at 1942 PH raid in one day.
Also I realised, in previous screen of Hiyo, that it expended half of bigger guns ammo, and only one unit of 25mm, and since all Dauntless dived, as I am guessing, they were in 25mm range, so it should expand at least 1/3rd of larger gun ammo. So does MiniKB had previous encounter (I am guessing even in naval battle it should disengage without shot), or actually all that ammunition expense is result of those 2 attacks?

I have strange feeling, for a long time, that there is something wrong, with small caliber AA routines (even since WITP), as most of AA Japan power lies in this range, and still Allied looses are very light, even against very strong AA fire.

PS. Oh. And what happened with those pilots on sunk carrier? In my last WITP game, I got one (fighter) unit back, after several months, with all experienced pilots, but with Home Defence HQ.

True Cribtop, but I'm not convinced Andy is not pursuing; no sign of the enemy.
- Ordered a small TF to shortcut home and another to trial Mini KB by 3 hexes to get an early warning.
Taking a long detour to stay out of trouble. Can still only field ca 15 bombers.

That's good advice Castor. I've become increasingly aware of how many troops the Allies can mount in Burma early on by reading other AAR's. Guess this is just as unrealistic as the supply issue, the inability of the Oscar and the superiority of the Tojo. Hard to get it all right so we just have to adjust accordingly.

I've uploaded a map over Burma; currently we got ca 3000 AV in total in the theater and the armored division will move to Rangoon again soon; been trying to get its full complement of tanks but it refuse to fill up with Type 97 or upgrade to the new Type 1. That's another 366 AV and for the time being as many troops I can spare; some 3350 in total. It will be hard to fight 5000 or more Allied AV so I'm building airfields in depth and bringing in more and more ac. Will be throwing them all into a prolonged battle when the time comes.

So let me know; were do you think we should defend?
- Mandalay is a clear hex but there is a river to the north. Same with Shwebo.
I'm building forts in ALL Burma bases; most got 3 forts by now with the main base in the clear hex (forgot the name) got 5 forts and building.

My plan is to pull back from the frontiers, leaving a garrison and placing the troops in strategic move in Rangoon or other base and then intercept the enemy's main trust in a mobile defensive battle while concentrating the bulk of our troops (ca 3000 AV). If we fight in favorable terrain and with forts and with air superiority I hope that we will be able to prevail.

Hi Inqistor; nice to hear from you and that you've been following the AAR's!
It's true; ammunition spendage is off both in regards to surface battles, bombardments and AA.
The Mini KB had not been under attack before the clash with the Allied combined force.
- Majority of ammo for AA guns is spent; the destroyers got 2/12 rounds left for their main armaments.
Strangely enough the Junyo havnn't spent much.

The pilots belonging to the sunk carriers have been saved and transferred to pools.
I estimate that we saved ca 60-65% of all pilots from the Mini-KB. Some air groups have been lost but I don't think there will be a shortage of units; crack carrier pilots will always be worth their weight in gold as Crib says.

Ok we got something to celebrate!! Andy has turned his armor north of Geraldton around and abandoned his advance on Carnarvon! This means that our shattered army can be evacuated to Java to rebuild; freeing up garrison units there.
- This is a major victory for sea and land based air power over a strong enemy ground force.

I see a major concentration of enemy armor south of Townsville and is expecting a push here or against Alice Spring next.
Trying to build an equally strong defense in this area as in Burma. Our Combined strength between Alice Springs and Townsville should be much the same as in Burma (3500-3750AV).

Transferred all damaged carriers into one TF and placed the pilots in reserve via the undamaged carriers.
(Didn't work if there weren't an operational carrier in the hex to effectuate the transfer).

Allied carriers spotted NE of Christmas Island by long range Betty bombers!!
You know what they say...Being paranoid doesn't mean they're not after you...!-)

- So Andy hasn't given up. I got the Mini KB screened by a surface combat TF in case he gets to close this will take the heat.
I'm detouring wide; got a replenishment group we can fill up from later, so I think we'll be ok. Got ca 45 operational fighters and 16 bombers and we are in range to transfer Zero's from Christmas Island if necessary.

Hi PzB, greetings from London. Excited to read about the deployment of your first major Tojo formations - good idea to use them in concentration with crack pilots to increase the impact. Kind of like the 'big wings' formations that the RAF employed at one stage in the Battle of Britain I guess. The hunt at sea is a real nail-biter!

Hi Richard! Yes the air belongs to the Big Wing formations
Until next gen Allied fighters appear in similar numbers we will have an edge.
- If Andy brings his AF close to the front he will have to stand against such heavy sweeps or risk being bombed by 1-200 mediums.

Not a lot to report; no sign of US carriers near Line Islands.
I've dispatched some surface units that are low on fuel to close towards Christmas Island while taking continued
evasive manouver with the remaining carriers. Got a replenishment TF around so no immediate risk of running out of fuel.

Enemy armor continue to backtrack towards Geraldton.
A massive enemy buildup from Brisbane and north indicates that something is brewing.

Hi I noticed that you made this statement in one of your post during this AAR.

At Midway the Japs evacuated most of the pilots from the carriers

Is this a true historical fact/statement or is this something related to another WITPAE or WITP game. If this is ture could you provide a link. If Japan actually rescued most of their pilots from the Midway carriers then this would be a big change to what I thought happend in terms of Japanese pilot loss as a result of the Midway battle.

Thanks,

Kevin/Sath

Read it in a book, have to review my library to find it

According to this source: http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/AAF/USSBS/IJO/IJO-1.html
40 pilots were saved from the Kaga (50%).

It would be logical that those not killed in the air or during the bombing attacks would be evacuated ASAP.

A most interesting turn!
We harass Perth, sinking a dozen enemy ships and bomarding the city and airfields.

In the Central Pacific a picket destroyer and patrol boat is sunk by enemy CAG.
The Mini KB is pulling away though and reinforcement Zero's landed on the Junyo.
We now got something like 50 fighers on the 2 remaining carriers.

How is it that you are able to just waltz into his harbors without some kind of reaction? Is he not spotting your TFs? Spotting you but not reacting by getting his ships out of harm's way? I don't get it.

Have to ask Andy...
- I was spotted outside Perth but no attacks from 8 hexes.
Think I destroyed most LBA when I hit Geraldton earlier on.

The 4 Brit destroyers was indeed a paltry defense force.
I had expected him to flee head over heels.

There is no CV TF anywhere near Perth. I know Andy doesn't have any CV's in the area and can operate with impunity if I manage to suppress his LBA.

I mean on your CV TF. Your cv was 1 day sail from Perth for several days and he continues to use port in Perth.

Hi PzB

I have noticed, that Aircraft losses are pretty close for both sides. I understand, that Japan have horrible operational, but since you regularly destroy lots of Allied planes on ground, I find only two explanations:
-either this is FOW, and Allied losses are much heavier
-or Allies are already better in Air-to-Air combat (almost impossible, they would need now, like 3:1 already, and I don't see their advantage in reports)

So, could you specify exactly, what is whole campaign Air-2-Air current ratio?

Will be a break for a few days; on my way to Germany for the annual boys trip :-)

Milman; with no carriers to support him Andy didn't have many places to hide his remaining ships when KB arrived.
He moved in a lot of LBA only to see me torch em all in Geraldton! Perth is a key hub for shipping to and from Oz and India - Africa, will always be a convoy coming or going.

Iniqistor: A2A see a slightly better than 2-1 odds for Japan by 08-42 (1300 kills to 600 losses).
Ops losses is something like 800 Allies to 1100 Japs.

Back in a week or so!

Finally a turn; busy days in May. Turns will be unregular out this week at least.

Andy is still intent on pursuit in the Central Pacific. No sign of his carriers this turn; we got a lot of ocean to play around with
and I've divided the replenishment fleet to have multiple options even if full speed is required. With a little luck we should be able to stay out of trouble.

Visited the Wilhelm Bauer type XXI submarine in Bremerhafen port!
- This is the only surviving type XXI boat in the world. In May 45 it was scuttled and stayed 12 years under water until raised and put into service
with the Bundesmarine until 1970 as a test boat.

It truly revolutionized submarine warfare; can stay submerged for 48 hours on slow speed, max speed of 17-18 knots submerged and 16 surfaced.
Half the boat is batteries. 6 forward firing torpedo tubes. Only surface armament is 2x2 20mm flak guns in turrets on the conning tower.

Isn't the Type XXI the boat that was fuel cell powered and arguably the first true submarine (as opposed to submersible torpedo boat)? She sure is pretty.

The XXI was the daddy of all post war diesel designs, especially the Soviet post war sub fleet (forget the class name .. Echo ? ). I had no idea there was even 1 left in the world. amazing to see one in RL PzB lucky man you .

EDIT .. apparently it was the Zulu Class :- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zulu_class_submarine. also the Whiskey class attack boats. Just discovered that France had one operational untill 1967 (just shows how advanced they really were)

Yep, it was a revolution more than an evolution. Some 190 boats were being readied by the end of the war.
The battle for the Atlantic could have entered a new and deadly phase.

Here's another shot;

Here's U-434, a Russian Tango class from 1976 that can be found in Hamburg.
- This boat looks very similar to the XXI type, only bigger. The bow planes for example can be retracted exactly as on Wilhelm Bauer.

Nice. Boy would I love to see her myself. My understanding is that a lot of the piping for the sub was outside of the pressure hull. A serious design flaw. Still revolutionary.

BTW, your bombers are not doing significant damage to the Allied armor. My allied tanks seem to take very little damage from any sort of Japanese bombs. You are knocking out support units though which has some effect. Just not killing tanks.

Had planned to see the U-995 as well, a Type VII. Thought it was in Hamburg but discovered somewhat late that it's actually in Kiel!
The U-995 was in service from 43-45 in the arctic. After the war it was taken over by the Norwegian Navy and kept in service for quite some time.
- Later on it was sold for 1$ to Germany and the boat is now laid up in splendid condition.

Hamburg: the U-995, the U-boat Memorial

Tomorrow it's back to reality again after 2 weeks with days of, travelling and family visiting.
Turn rate will probably continue to be rather slow as the weather is greaT!

Yeah, I know that damage isn't to serious but it was obviously enough to make Andy turn his men around.
Hopefully he's low on some types of tanks and machines.

Still quiet; the Mini KB is almost ready to refuel form replenishment tankers.

We bomb and harass targets in Oz and Burma; Andy is no doubt building his strength for his coming offensive - towards the end of the year?
The question is how long we shall retain a strong presence in Oz. No doubt we delay Andy's offensives towards New Guinea, Solomons, Timor etc by holding Oz.
We just have to ensure that we don't loose too much doing so. The pay off is partly the fact that we have to fight a lot of units that are tied to Oz.

Our only major ground reinforcements over the coming months is a series of 120 AV garrison units. Will place them in strategic bases to form the nucleus of island garrisons.
Will have to complement these with troops from Oz when the time comes to leave.

Recon indicates that an Oz offensive will be launched out of Bundaberg towards Townsville and the coast.
- Should be able to notice if Andy sends a major force towards Alice Springs.
