Andy said he call Zone 3 for the Diversion Zone.
I asked if it's a diversion Zone for me or him.....

The troops we have in Oz are the troops available for offensive and defensive actions in SRA and Central Pacific.
Some will be diverted to Burma (tanks and arty mostly). Not sure what offensive missions I can put them to; nothing in Oz for sure.
- Suggestions elsewhere are welcome.

I can take New Caledonia, Noumea and Efate but this will only stretch our perimeter to thin.
- A major hit and run show would be nice. Suva is not an option, to heavily fortified. Not sure Johnston and Midway Islands are worth it.
So what's left then... Not much I'm afraid.

"Diversion Zone"? Where else could the his main effort be? Burma? With monsoons soon to come? Doubt it. Any noise on western AUS coast (threat to Java)? Do you have intel on southern CentPac? I would assume this would be a favorable spot for him because he could place the USN in a mutually supporting position, i.e. move it to East AUS if necessary. Or stage an attack there. That's what I would do. Could you post maps of your perimeter in CentPac? Another though would be Kuriles, but Cannoe has already shown that it takes a lot of forces and CV to go that route.
I'd disengage KB as soon as possible and join it with mini KB at Truk or Palau. Or even deploy both forward. Do you know what naval assets Andy may have in place to interfere with your evacuation? Would he use his CV's? Although he obviously correctly guessed your evacuation route (the Para interdiction), he would probably only try to use as little assets to bind as many of your's including KB if this is a diversion. Sounds to me like leaving a few BB/CA/DD, and sending KB off north for refuel and rest...

Once you can develop where Andy's main axis of advance will be, I would also favor hit-and-run invasions on his weaker spots. Attack where is does most damage to long term logistics and his airfields. And where he will feel compelled afterwards to start a counter invasion immediately, and to leave major troop concentrations to watch this spots afterwards.

Most Jap weaknesses are well programmed in this game and maybe some units and weapon types are too efficient.
- What was established in 42-43 was that even 4Es could not challenge enemy air space without escorts when facing numerous enemy fighters.

Medium bombers sometimes turn back when sent in without escorts, 4E's don't.
6 Forts against 25 fighters ends up with no kills time and time again. They suck up some damage, fly on to the target - bomb it and then RTB.

Well, it's good to know what we have to expect. Afraid it will be very very tough to prevent B-29s from doing whatever they want, even without escorts.

Three incidents made the well planned evacuation of Zone 3 into a nightmare:
1. The Rockhampton garrison becoming stranded because of an hitherto unknown rail movement functionality.
2. A movement error by Andy's troops, moving them into Charters Towers which triggered Andy to use all his heavy bombers to close it down.
3. The unknown invisibility and uber abilities of Allied 4Es. 150 can shut down any base despite having the strongest defense.
- I don't think even Andy knew they were this uber, if he had they had been used much earlier.

The next 7-10 turns will be hard, cleaning up such a mess takes a lot of time and doesn't up morale much.
I will evacuate as much I can with as little losses as possible and make up tally when its all over.

Going to come up with something truly nasty to avenge this

I actually think you prematurely evacuate forces. Before fighting even Allied Vanguards (heck, you just beaten them up once already). It would be better to take a real fight, and then put battered remnants somewhere to rebuild, like Manila, or Java. There should be garrison there anyway, and it is safe enough for some time, and well supplied enough, to get really quick rebuild. After all, Japan is never short of land equipment.

Lets not panic about 4Es. Yet . The real question is: How many planes will be total write-offs? As I understand that is, how it works for now - if plane takes too long to repair, it is written off. There is probably around 50 battle damaged 4Es now. Although operational fatigue looks to be near none. Every day I count similar number of planes, excluding damaged. Aren't 4Es some high maintenance now? Plus, they bombard on low altitude. CAP is flying far too high. Like 15000 ft too high. Lower it, and there should be better results. Anyone know, what is current Allies Lightning, and vehicles production now? Isn't 111 vehicles somewhere around 2 months worth of replacements?

Considering actions so far, I was wondering, where are Japanese battlewagons. Allies try attack by the coast (south of Bowen), a week of bombardment by half a dozen of Battleships, and two dozens of Cruises (plus, in the absence of CD guns, and almost no artillery, you can send your Destroyers at point-blank (HELLO NEW PATCH!)). That should reduce spearhead enough to direct counterattack, if only your Australian bases are big enough to resupply bigger guns. Since base bombardment can cause few thousand casualities on prepared, and entrenched enemy, what will be results on marching army in open terrain? What is best, Allies can only counter it by sending Carrier Planes. They can not even retreat quick enough on ground.

As for future:

With 260 ships at Pearl Harbor, and Midway in Allied hands, it is possible, that there is some close amphibious landing in planning. I don't see any anti-ship Allied planes in Australia strikes.

New Caledonia is worth lots of points, provide several, although exposed to naval bombardment, mutually supporting bases. And it should stretch LOC to Australia even further. So if Japan is still in Australia, it is a good option. What is current points ratio anyway?

PS. I like those numbers at Allied parachute unit. 228? Does that mean, that they are already divided into 228 smaller units? Does USMC battalion even have this total number of squads anyway? It should have eaten all available USMC commanders.

The loss of a dozen heavy bombers is crippling losses for the Allies in 1942. How many do you think they get? If you lose 12 in one day thats a disaster.

Andy mentioned we had a deal about not performing strat bombing in China which in return no B-29s would operate out of bases there...
Must admit that I had all but forgotten any such deal. So no more strat bombing in China.

Well, I'm glad the adventure in Zone 3 is about to end. All the small bases that could be gobbled up by Allies would eventually be the end of us.
I have a battered Guards division rebuilding at Soerabaja and it'll take a year before it's 90-100% again. More losses would mean it would take even longer.
Our only armored division still only has 200 out of 400 motorized support.

No idea how many write offs Andy got. He mentioned that 2 months production was destroyed; if this was in one or two turns I don't remember.
I've considered bombardments but getting within 7 hexes of bases with 400 ac and PT boats is very dangerous. Andy is expecting this and if he has brought in
SBDs and TBDs we could take ugly losses. I could rearm battleships in T'ville using an AKE in the size 5 port. 4Es bombing the ships in port forced me to move it
to the size 3 port in Cairns though, so when we burn our ammo we need to go to Rabaul to replenish.

If you para land 60 men of a Para battalion it will get an auto number like /227 and this does not mean there are 227 sub units

Well well, WC in SA is over; congrats to Spain!
The only undefeated country in the contest is...New Zealand!
- Congrats Al

Good advice, will lower CAP attitude for bomber buster and keep some on high level CAP to counter enemy fighters.
Of course they will do the opposite...but what can I do about that

The good thing about having all US 4E's in Oz is that they aren't in Burma...that said I'm expecting Andy to attack through the SRA in this game.
We have a strong front in Solomons - Central Pac so he will aim for the area Burma - Sumatra - Malaya - Java - Timor - Celebes. All my efforts will from now on go into
reinforcing this zone. Don't think he's interested in Kuriles..dead end.

Andy will be hesistant using his carriers as long as the Uber KB is around, so we have to take advantage of this weapon; unfortunately it's a one shot Charlie and it takes 1-2 months to reload it.

Actually I think it's almost impossible to the Allied player to invade Japan and reach the historical boundaries by 1945-46, especially in scen 2 with all thos extra Jap units.
Another crucial factor is that Allied subs aren't efficient enough and I've never experienced running low on fuel and supplies. This completely revamps the picture and maybe Andy need Uber 4Es to
get anywhere at all.

Without occupying all of Oz, India or PH an auto victory is impossible. So we have to win by hurting and delaying the Allies until the end of the year.
If we do this well enough we get a draw or even maybe a win. Keeping the KB a force to be reckoned with throughout 1944 is key to achieving this, so any plans we develop can not risk this key factor.

This is Cent Pac:

A bit behind as it's midnight before I can get to the AAR.

We hang on to Charters throughout the turn....but it is with some shock I notice the 33rd Div has
entered CT!! What happened? In my inertia I must have clicked CT as target when railing the division from Bowen to
Townsville This is the penalty for rushing turns at night before heading to bed. Last night I couldn't sleep for hours because of the
rush of the turns. Think I need to step back a bit.

This is obsetting, getting stuck in CT now in strat mode is suicide unless we can march out before more Allied troops arrive.
- What is annoying is that while the very same division was prevented from leaving Townsville 10 days ago as Allied troops
entered the base on the very same day as it was scheduled to leave, now was allowed to rail into CT when enemy troops
already were present *sigh*

Andy says this is how the routines have to work in order not to strand railing units somewhere out in the blu.
Seems like all this was programmed to inflict max casualties to someone in particular...

Air Combat

I initiated an air offensive against Katha in Burma. Noticed a considerable build up of forces here and
ordered a large scale airfield attack. Our sweepers found no CAP. Destroying many ac on the ground the raid must
be considered a success.

I skip the usual bombing of Chinese ground troops today. Too much else to focus on.

When looking at the CAP over CT I wonder were the Tojo's are.
- Today I ordered all available fighters on 100% LRCAP over CT and augmented the numbers
with some Zero's from the escort carriers.

Our Zero's on CAP cause many losses to the enemy and I'm quite pleased, but still wonder were
the 95 Tojo's are. Only after the turn I figure it out; another FUBAR by me late at night.
- Instead of putting the fighters on 100& LRCAP over CT I place them on 100% CAP.... :(
This could have been the knock out blow against enemy bombers in Zone 3. All Tojo's were set to lower
altitudes and rested to hit enemy bombers. I'm truly into a series of unfortunate scew up's these days.
Mulled over this for many hours.

A long range counterstrike from Christmas Island!!
This looks promising me thinks; 31 Zero's and 27 Nells is a well balanced strike force.
- Notice one thing; raid is spotted 47 minutes out against 3-14 min when the carriers hit Palmyra.
Jap radar sux and Allied early radar is much better than what it often was in real life.

Initially there are only 18 Wildcats on CAP, but more and more raise as time goes by.
there are still 19 Zero's left protecting the bombers when the Wildcats go after the Nells.
(Think we diverted or shot down ca 20-24 CAP fighters)
- I was thinking that ca 50% of the Nells would be shot down by the remaining CAP, fearing that as
many as 75% would be shredded. Right, 2 out of 27 Nell's appear over the enemy TF and one is splashed by FLAK
while the last launch a fish against a battleship.

I thought A2A had been toned down a bit but for Jap bombers it's just as uber deadly as before.
The weather is light rain and still we loose 95% of our bombers to CAP. I would expect Zero losses to be higher
and bomber losses to be 20-40% lower.

A shredded counterstrike!

We had 45 Zero's and 45 Nell's at Christmas Island with 9 reserve ac and pilots for each group.
Despite loosing 27 Nell's today we still have another 27 left and the island has enough supplies and an Air HQ to enable it to receive replacement ac.
I moved 9 Val's, 3 Kate's, 9 Bettiesand 9 Zero's from Palmyra as well, boosting Christmas Island ac strength close to 120 which is its max capacity.

PzB,

please, could you post a screenshot that shows the current (equipment) status of 33rd Division. And it would be quite interesting if you could somehow document its recovery after one month, three months and six months (assuming that parts of it will escape from Australia).

Thanks!

K

only 17 Wildcats and then 28 on Cap? Where are all his fighters? Or is that just what was in the air at the very beginning of the engagement?

Yes I can do so, the 33rd Div is routed but it's still in relatively ok shape.
It's being loaded on multiple transports and fast transports to get out of dodge within 2 days.

The way CAP works now is that a certain number of fighters is on patrol with more standing by and more on ready state.
Given 48 minute to intercept a strike the fighters on patrol will be joined by stand by fighters and eventually ready state fighters as the battle progress.
- So when Andy had 50 fighters on CAP he only had 17 airborne when the battle began.

The problem from my point of view is that our escort fighters don't manage to engage the enemy fighters that scramble late, so despite of fighting of 20+ Wildcats
the last 30 would just slip past completely and massacre our fragile Nells.

Line Islands

If this is a full scale invasion of the Line Islands and not only a strike things will get interesting.
As I told Andy, I had to provide carrier and fleet support to cover my evacuation of Zone 3 and I remember Andy's outburst when he found out
the KB was in place. He also said he had been preparing for months for this.

Today was actually the day the full KB joined hands again for the first time in 50 days after repairing and upgrading in the Home Islands.
Only the Junyo is still in Tokyo, finishing her repairs tomorrow. She will then head out with the Kongo and 6 destroyers.

I did a calculation and the KB including 6 fleet and 2 light carriers can reach the Line Islands in ca 10 days including 2 refuelings.
There are already fleet oilers taking up position to meet the carriers. The heavy fleet units will take a bit longer as they need to go via Rabaul and Kwajalein.

Still, Andy has 10 days to secure his objectives before we're over him; the clock is ticking
Shortly we will go over our defensive postures in the Line Islands.

Line Islands Defensive Dispositions

Most defensive units in the islands are prepped 100% for their respective bases.
Fanning island between Palmyra and Christmas is building an airfield, should be ready in a few days.
There's a 1500 man naval guard unit and some engineers on this atoll. Plan was to have a seaplane base here.

Canton and Baker Island serves as backup bases within air transfer range of Kwajalein and Line Islands.
There is also a crack inf regiment at Canton; I'm moving 30 long range transports to the base together with 27 Nells and 27 Zero's.
- Also loading up a para unit at Kwajalein and the Amph Bde is preparing at Rabaul.

Let's hope Andy also screws up a few things that will allow us to get back at him.
Question is how many divisions he has prepped for an invasion and how well they fare against our men.

Zone 3

Soon both Zone 3 and 2 will be more or less abandoned.
Falling back from Zone 3 means Alice Springs has to be abandoned. How long we will stay at Tennant Creek before falling back upon Darwin and Katherine remains to be
seen. The goal is to keep a presence in Oz throughout 1942 if possible.

The good thing is that lots of troops and resources now become available for other purposes and the Solomons and New Guinea can be fully manned and the defenses in SRA are also filling out.

As soon as a stalemate can be achieved in Burma I hope to strike decisively against Andy both in offensive and reactive actions throughout 43.
A large convoy with a crack division and a motorized infantry regiment are being shipped to Burma as we speak.
- I also notice that Andy's plan in Burma is to slowly expand the basea and airfields in order to overwhelm us in the air and then explode superior ground forces against exposed troops. To counter this we need lots and lots of Tojo's and 3-4 major sized airfields. I'm working on both...

The bug that troops in non base hexes don't suffer malaria effects is unfortunate for us; large formations can camp in the open and bide their time and opportunity to launch an attack.

Loaded 3/4 of the troops in T'ville today and making an effort to complete loading by tomorrow.
Cairn's is following suit, leaving only one Air HQ.

The Junyo has completed repairs and is heading south with the Kongo and destroyers.
Accelerated the last Katsuragi today and Taiho today, will run low on yard points but there is a CL that will be completed in 18 days
and the Musashi is 2 months away. Need to accelerate the Shinano too, in Scen 2 she's been changed to a Taiho class carrier.

You will not be able to sweep Palmyra. It is your own base.

Believe me I tried to do this many times against you in Malaya and Burma. It wont happen until the base changes sides.

Dang, that explains it.
- Sweeping your own base when infested with enemies is essential.

When I do tomorrow's AAR update we'lll see that Andy's invasion force met a wall of steel and a poor odds!

No idea Al, you should be able to sweep all hexes if you ask me.
If there is any beneficial results house rules should cover it.

NEWSFLASH: US INVADES PALMYRA - FIRST INVASION WAVE SUFFERS EXTREME CASUALTIES AND IS STALLED!

2 marine regiments and an engineer regiment landed at Palmyra today after extensive air and sea bombardments.
Despite heavy disruption and casualties the invaders were stuck on the beaches and suffered heavily.
US troops, initially numbering around 10000 have already suffered ca 3000 casualties.

- If Andy wants Palmyra he will need to re-embark his first wave and send in a second.
After bombarding with all remaining US and British capital ships ammo is probably low and a replenishment run to PH may
become necessary.

Ground Combat

I notice that Andy has landed 2 marine and one engineer regiment - close to 10k troops,
this is 40% than the permitted stacking limit on Palmyra.
Maybe this is one of the reasons for the poor results?

Japs on the other hand were reduced to ca the allowed stacking limit by the time combat was initiated!
Still, Allied adjusted combat value was ...2!?

I did _not_ expect the Kari to return from her trip to Palmyra

Review of Palmyra

Our assault value is down from ca 190 to 130, not so bad taken in consideration.
Disruption is around 80+, but the same would be the case with US troops.
- I noticed that not all US troops were landed, will there be a follow up landing of remaining support troops today?
Wouldn't do so if I were Andy as this would trigger another shock attack.

Next turn will be very interesting!

Line Islands Strat Overview

Ideally Andy should have the capacity to invade both Palmyra and Christmas Island at once.
Now he has to be careful to avoid the angry samurais on Christmas as he supports the Palmyra invasion.

On a side note: I concluded loading of troops from Townsville today.
- A few thousand troops, mostly casualties, remain. Will try to take as many I can to Cairns by barge.
All ships are racing north to cover under the CVE / LBA umbrella just NNE of Cairns.

In Cairns loading of all but one base force unit has completed or is in process.
One unit of Tojo's remain on CAP for protection. Just a few days more and we should have evacuated Zone 3.

Now the Line Island invasion explains his comment about the Zone 3 diversion.  But what division do his two Marine Regiments belong to, where is the rest?  I think he either must have them in the second wave, or he might have them scheduled for an attack on another target, nearby or distant?

How long would it take for Andy to evacuate the landed troops in case his second wave fails?  Could you bring your quick reaction forces from Rabaul and use them to drive the invaders into the sea?  After hitting his navy?
Can KB make it in time, and bring enough heavies?  You could create havoc in the ranks of his CV and BB, if you are lucky and bold now.  He brought some the slow british R-class battlewagons besides the british carriers, so maybe even if he pulls his CV back, you might be able to hunt down the BB and transport forces?  Could you detach mini KB already?

It certainly does; especially in regard to were Allied naval assets are.
- Andy got plenty enough ground troops to both fight in Burma, Oz and perform landings in the Line Islands.
However, he only got enough naval assets to support one major operation.

I now see that he has moved almost all British capital ships to the Central Pacific.
Any operations in the Indian Ocean and all the way to the Solomons would therefore meet very little opposition.

The 9th and 21st Regiments belong to the 3rd Marine Division.
The Third Marine Division was first assembled in September 43 and the regiments fought independently until then.
- So Andy has the entire First Marine Division at disposal, most likely prepped for Christmas Island.
Not sure which other Marine regiments he also may have at his disposal.

Since not all troops have been unloaded at Palmyra Andy first has to complete unloading; this will take 1 day.
- Then he has to consider whether he will perform another attack with his ground troops already on Palmyra.
If he attacks again tomorrow not much will be achieved with the disrupted troops.

So let's assume he attacks again in 2 days after prolonged air and sea bombardments.
- Reloading of the troops on Palmyra will take 2 days, he don't want to overcrowd the island by landing more troops first.
So on day 5 he can land the second wave. This will most likely be more successful than the first wave. Let's assume they achieve
a 1-1 odds on the first day and reduce forts to level 3. Then another 2-3 attacks will be required to lower the remaining forts.
The question is then whether the second wave can capture Palmyra without wearing itself out.

If we assume that the second wave will manage to capture Palmyra after 3 attacks this will most likely require 1 or 2 days or rest in
between the attacks. In this equation it will take another 8-9 days to capture Palmyra, and then the island will be a wreck requiring fresh
engineers to clean up the rubble before aircraft can start using the fields.

My estimate is therefore that the KB should be able to intervene before Andy got an operational air base in the Line Islands.
- Even a size 2 airfield would be insufficient to be a threat to the KB and allow him to make a stand.

The only way Andy can win the battle for the Line Islands is to occupy Christmas Island as well before the KB arrives.
This does not seem very likely and my conclusion for now is that Andy has a few difficult choices to make

The Mini KB doesn't officially exist anymore. 4 slow CVE's and a CS support the evacuation of Zone 3.
- The Junyo is heading for Kwajalein and will need 3-4 days longer than the KB to reach the Line Islands.
Maybe it can play a role finishing of cripples then?

As I said; the KB consists of 6 fleet carriers and 2 light carriers.
This force should be sufficient to stand and fight the Allied carrier force if Andy doesn't retreat.
I will not split it up before a decisive victory can be won though.

By not splitting up I mean not operating independently.
I may well divide the carriers into divisions when we approach the Line Islands.
- Problem is that I don't have more than one appointed admiral with good air ratings right now.

Sounds like we are up to follow some interesting battles in this AAR.  Hopefully KB arrives in time to take a chunk out of his capital ships.  If Andy manages to capture Palmyra just before KB arrives, will you consider a counter-landing to capture his disrupted marine division on the spot, i.e. before it can fortify?

If Andy captures Palmyra and then has to leave his troops will be toast...
A few shuttle bombardments and then we'll land a force to recapture the island.
- Need to start prepping units for this eventuality. Got plenty as we just have evacuated Zone 3!
