After seeing what a handful of stringbags (British torpedo bombers) could do to my battlefleet (sink 3 battleships and torpedo a light cruiser)
I must notice that the effectiveness of torpedo bombers on both side of the fence is rather high

Yes, the Japs have more potentially dangerous torpedo planes but I haven't sunk many Allied ships with these planes in any of my 2 AE games (April / October 42). Obviously they're not able to wipe out fleets despite Japan's superior position (much better than it ever was in WWII).
- If you protect Allied ships with 10 fighters this will be enough to turn back most unescorted Japanese torpedo bomber attacks. The Nells is Japan's answer to the Sherman tank...one hit and it blows! The big problem with 4E's is that you need 100 fighters to shoot down 10 and the bombers always get through. Combined with a high low level ship attack hit % 4E's can be made into uber weapons.

If the devs reduced hit probability for all torpedo bombers in the game I wouldn't mind, but there's fine little to do about it otherwise.
- As I said before, if you wish to play a challenging game as Allies you don't find an unbalance in the game and use it to break your opponent.
Nell's and Bettie's don't break the game, neither do Kate's but they can seriously hurt you in 42-43 unless you're careful, especially before you reduce the KB.

Yes, I've used Jap Betties and Nells in WitP to slaughter poor Al's british battleships in port at night , but we've all learned from these experiences and tried to address the worst abnormalities.

In general I see your points CT, but sometimes I think you drive things a little fast and a little too far.
I'm the typical "centre of the road" guy that is looking for balance. I notice things that I think require tweaking but I seldom conceive them as broken.
After seeing 10 Sally's out of 70 shot down by flak in one mission I will continue to evaluate their efficiency in different settings before making up my mind.

Nice find!  Yes the Privateer's probably caused much damage in 44-45, most likely against coastal convoys and poorly escorted / protected ships, however the list don't break down the claims into types and it's also impossible to verify these claims.

You should also remember that it's far easier to achieve good results when the enemy already is on his knees and broken.
In 42 Japan got elite torpedo bombers and achieve fairly good results as long as the Allies are reeling. Just observe how their efficiency sinks as pilot quality decrease and opposition increase.

I don't mind seeing such Privateer's in AE in 44-45 that is a threat to single ships and coastal convoys.
What I hope not to see is B-24s (not Privateers) in 42-44 wiping out whole naval squadrons and completely upsetting the game balance.

which you wouldn´t in my PBEM because that is restricted with a hr. To go back to start, what I wanted to do is to warn you about USN heavy bombers - aka Privateers - and USAAF medium bombers on low nav attack (if Andy trains his crews to do so).

Appreciate that CT! I was a bit confused as to whether you mean the Privateer (PB4Y-2) or the PB4Y-1 Liberator.
In your example that knocks out a CL and 4 DDs it is the PB4Y-1 that is in action.

I agree that the Privateer and B-25 should be a potent weapon by 1944, but it should still not be able to hit agile and fast warships from 1000 feet.
It will be a good question to ask both Al and Andy what will be their view on using the Privateer as a low level naval bomber.

I would tend to disagree, though the mechanics of the game may not match historical results - because B-25s could and did shred destroyers from almost wave-top heights with their multiple .50cals.

BTW that squadron example looks like the average ship target was 500 to 600 tons. Tiny by AE standards. Must have been slow and with no or virtually no AA.

Thats what I thought as well. Probably a lot of fishing trawlers in this list...

I think it is a function of experience more than anything else and do not feel that torpedo bombers are that deadly. I just had a two day battle where I had over 100 torpedo bombers attack numerous warships CAs and DDs in various TF with only one hit. They all had torpedo skills in the 50 to high 60 range. Average but not great. Avengers have better torp dud rate than Allied subs but it is not that good. My beauforts have better but they got no hits. I am betting that Andy hit you with very highly trained pilots with very good torpedoes. Your old BBs are not that fast and don't have very good AA protection and you had no CAP. The results were great for him but not unreasonable. You gave him an excellent setup and he got an excellent die roll.

I am beginning to think that avengers are better used vs ships as level bombers.

Meanwhile my pilots are slated for some more training.....

Mmm, much food for thought and it's hard to draw any immediate conclusions.
- Let's observe how things work out in the time to come.

KB's Kate pilots are also very experienced, this also applies for the original batch of Betty - Nell pilots, but I will never get more of these.

I've mentioned my 2c about Privateers to Andy and asked about him.
Since we got a general rule against 4Es on naval attack below 10k feet I'd be willing to consider different rules for a given number of Privateer squadrons trained
for naval combat. A few units to begin with for test purpose perhaps.

FYI: When changing squadron size for air units onboard carriers I experience that the mouse pointer dissappears.
Have to Alt-Tab in and out for it to come back and when I did this twice the game crashed...Anyone else with similar experiences?

Andy says that he epxeriences crashes when he change HQ many times.

No, but I have plenty of crashes. No particular action involved. If you are clicking exactly at the right time when the screen is sort of blinking - like it is getting back focus although it never lost it - then it crashes. If your click is a little off in time, then you just get a hesitation. See the thread in Tech Support. I know they worked it pretty hard but must not have made any progress or it would have been in the patch.

I've never experienced what you describe witpqs! Seems like different operating systems react differently to AE.
Guess these little quirks can be very difficult to get rid of.

Increased sub activity off Home Islands; immediate measures taken to discourage further...intrusion of Emperial water!-)
We hit a freighter with a dud torpedo, same goes the other way and little bang for the buck.

I get these lockups too. It seems to have something with WitPAE losing the focus just as you click on something. For me the program just freezes up and then ends. It can be very frustrating.

only got crashes when I fiddle around in my CV TFs and the squadrons aboard the carriers, therefor I´m always saving before entering a CV TF. Had the disappearing cursor twice or three times perhaps. A nuissance considering the number of turns so far.

It is when resizing air units aboard carriers that I experience the dissappearing mouse syndrom.
Must remember to save before doing so. Never experienced freezing up or "blinking" screen when clicking around.

2 seaplane tenders have converted to CVL's. Repair time is 300 days
It's not possible to accelerate this convertion, is it? If i put the ships as prioritized or critical in the shipyards
it still says 300 days until completion. Damage is 10 sys and 10 flotation.

Lots of action today - again!

Enemy convoys are trying to reach Akyab - Ramree Islands.
A rather suicidal mission if you ask me. We send many transports and their troop loads to the bottom!
- I have moved in 40 Betties to reinforce the small Nell unit that has been attacking coastal convoys in the area.

The only annoying thing today is that sweeps went in after our vulnerable torpedo bombers had attacked.
This cost us some ac and in total we lost 30 to the enemy's 18 ac today, but we sank 6 vessels; 4 loaded transports, 1 escort and the large PG (Soerabaja, 5800 tons with 20cm guns).

Obviously Andy is serious with his Ramree Island adventure. I'll be happy to oblige him and fight such a battle this close to our MLR.

The situation on Oz is also tensing up and I'm preparing to leave Tennant Creek, don't want to get entangled and trapped there.
Our Army will combine closer to Kathrine.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Nov 03, 42

As you can see Andy has now airlifted an aviation engineer battalion to Ramree Island using Catalinas!

Check the settings for your video card as appropriate to your version of Windows. What you want to do is turn off any hardware acceleration features.

If you have already done that, it's a matter of figuring out what is running in the background and turning it off if you can. Some security programs can be real hogs.

I get these lockups too. It seems to have something with WitPAE losing the focus just as you click on something. For me the program just freezes up and then ends. It can be very frustrating.

I have yet to have a crash of AE since I got it last fall. Praise the lord.....

It's kinda difficult to know which background programs that may be causing problems in AE..if at all.
Not sure I've turned on any graphic accelerators. It says "PhysX acceleratos enabled". Can always try to turn it off but my problems with AE are quite limited.

The Tony is in production; I've got a limited production run. Will upgrade to more capable models later on.
For now I will use the Tony as a local interceptor above major bases.

Lots of action again this turn.

We projected some serious air power over Ramree Island today.
Andy tried to put a CAP in place but met over a 100 Tojo's there!

I hope this will be somewhat discouraging and allow us to dictate terms in Burma for another few months.

Was a but surprised when the defeated troops at Ramree Island retreated, thought it was an island.
- As Andy said, most casualties were probably caused by crocodiles when crossing the swamps over to the mainland!
Also notice how few enemy squads were damaged, most were destroyed.
There were also parts of 2 engineer units and we managed to win the fight with inferior numbers. Our bombing efforts no doubt
had a severe effect. Still think Andy should have lifted in more ground troops if he wanted to keep the place, I was seriously in
doubt whether we had enough troops even against those present now. If we had failed the troops of 2 para units would most likely have been lost.

Noticed that movement is somewhat borked; put our troops in China on march mode and when about to exit the hex
all but one units halted as more enemy units entered the hex. Annoying...

Action intensifies in Burma as the enemy army moves out of the jungle and into a clear hex north of Magwe.
My guess is that Andy will try to protect his army and Jap bombers are vulnerable so I try something new.
- Large number of fighters put on escort at high altitude and the bombers ordered to attack the enemy from 25k feet.
If there is a CAP present we should get an altitude advantage.

I'm very pleased with that we removed Ramree Island as a factor last turn.

The Army in Burma is now very strong, 5500 AV in total for all units.
What I want is a strong counterattack that can drive back the enemy and stabilize the front and allow me to
withdraw some units. From mid 43 I will have to fortify Sumatra and Malaya and consider whether Burma is defendable.

What's your thoughts on a prolonged defense in Burma?
- How much, how long, risk and advantages

is all but futile.

Niiiice. 500 fighters in production. If you could upgrade it to 600-700 until July/August Japan will outproduce Allies through 1943.
Also you are short on Vehicle Replacements (I hope nothing in China suck it?), and Merchant Shipyards, so if any CVE is speeded up, it is probably first ship to turn off, so triple cost for no bonus.

Burma:
Giving up Burma means supply for China.
Supply for China means 4Es in China, in range of HI.
Also, once there is one supplied Burma base on other side of jungle, Allies in one month roll over into Singapore, thus closing all communications in DEI.
So it means end of oil supply.
Every island Allies catch must be supplied. Asia will get supply from India, so Japan can do nothing with it afterward, while islands can still be cut off by fleet, or long range planes.
So the answer is: DEFEND INDEFINITELY. Burma falls, in a month there are Allies in Singapore, and offensive in China.

So far Allies were unable to get CAP in India/Burma with more than 20 planes, so I don't think they can muster something bigger now. Why don't you LRCAP Allied units? Last "adventure" at Ramree Island could bag at least 10 planes loaded with troops. Transports must fly with supply for this 25 units stack, like crazy.

Plus, aren't Japan got recently Night Fighters unit? Not that they are any good, but there won't be anything better. Also isn't it time to get independent Val, and Kate units up front? With level 2 airfield in Mandalay it is perfect spot for new shorter range VALs. Goodbye Chittagong fleets.
I was recently thinking about AA units. They are dirty cheap, and HI floods with them. They seldom works, but at least 4Es will not bombard without ANY loss. Oh, and where are new A6M3? They should perform good on sweeps.

Australia:
You DO realize, that armored punch in Australia, is at the end of supply reach? Actually this road hex, north of Tennant Creek, is out of Allied supply range (if roads from Normanton are trails, not secondary roads). And since supply at this distance is delivered, like once every three days. Actually I had same situation at Burma. Supply was available, but after first day all units were short, so Allied Tanks are all short on supply, and that considering, that Allies were able to somehow suck few dozen thousands in Cloncurry (which get waste at small base anyway)

Conclusions:
Long way, and only 2 roads, which are pretty close. Cut off supply. 3 fast units could get 20 hexes area, and it will be looong to retake.
Attack this stack. It will increase supply usage even more.
What is actually garrison size at Normanton? Maybe small amphibious assault again? After all, Andy made this mistake in Burma once.

General strategy:
For sure, most Allied fighters are in Burma. Those Spitfires are probably Australian, maybe even some Canadian units are in place. American for sure, so...
Allies must cover, except Burma: China, Australia, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Fiji, Pearl Harbor and West Coast. I'm guessing in most of those places there are only Permanently Restricted units, and in the rest no more than 2, so...
PH is strong with AA, but what with West Coast? Fighters there, if even exist, probably fly training mission. And Japan short term goal should be...
Catch Enterprise during repair. After all "Loose lips sink ships". So is it in PH, or WC?

Uhm shut armament production off and increase vehicle production by 50 points or so. You are also producing insane numbers of planes and engines and have only a miniscule HI reserve.

Good advice! Armament production can indeed be turned off and vehicle production increased.
I have stopped production of many ac and engine types and only switch them on when pools run low.

Merchant shipyards have run low because I accelerated 3 CVE's - I can switch one of and halt a few cargo ships.

The question regarding Burma is whether it is possible to hold it and if I hold it with large troop concentrations there is a risk that Andy
will invade Sumatra and-or any of the coastal bases south of Rangoon. Therefore I need to a) Keep KB nearby b) find more troops to strongly
garrison Sumatra and Malaya. Getting cut of with 5500 AV in Burma would not be kewl....

I have placed long range CAP over Ramree Island and the "stack" many times; results have been dissappointing.
One time 6-7 Oscars were lost, probably due to enemy LRCAP.

First night fighter units haven't appeared yet..so we're fumbling in the dark.
Most of my AA assets are already in Burma, Andy bombs from 10k and up and doesn't suffer much.

The smaller Val and Kate units have been deployed to the Solomons; some have been increased in size and are being used as training formations.
Instead I have 78 Nick fighter bombers in Burma, need to train low level naval attack before these guys can hit the barn door though.
- I don't like loosing good naval bombers against minor shipping targets, these pilots should instead be transferred to our carriers when experienced enough.

Trying multiple sweeps over Chittagong tomorrow and got 40 naval bombers ready to strike.
A naval flotilla will also attempt a hit and run strike.

Hm, didn't know that about supply in Australia. Tennant Creek has been abandoned and Alice Springs will soon be recaptured.
Will it still be difficult for Andy to supply his troops moving towards Kathrine and Darwin?
The plan and hope is to make a stronger stand here, the clue is just that we can't be defeated - then enemy armor will pursue into Darwin and make an evacuation
impossible. No matter what happens the last thing Japan can afford is to loose 2000 AV in Northern Oz, then the DEI will be left undefended.

It's all but impossible to figure out which port a certain ship is repaired in on the WC. I can't exactly afford to send the KB in to bomb one based on nothing but a guess and a good luck charm!-)

Air Combat

Today we bombed the "stack" from high altitude; we didn't cause too much damage but encountered no enemy fighters either.
CAP losses were like nil until a formation of Sally Ic showed up, suddeny 10!! bombers fell out of the skies from their max altitude of 28210 feet
- Andy thought this could be a bug caused by the altitude 28210 being conceived as 210 feet... (I set all other bombers to 30k feet, forgetting that Sally Ic got a lower
max ceiling). This explanation doesn't hold up when we see that another Sally Ic formation bombed from the same altitude the same turn without suffering flak losses.

- I was discouraged by the high defensive modifiers provided last turn and this time the tables were turned. Despite an AV of some 4100 we got an adjusted AV
of more than 7000 and the Chinks got nuked

Chinese losses were 24324 casualties including 510 destroyed and 1045 disabled combat squads, 563 destroyed and 424 disabled support squads, 23 destroyed and 43 disabled engineers, as well as 36 destroyed and 14 disabled guns.

So we achieved our goal (weaken Chinese Army) even though we needed a little help.

I would not use Nicks for anti shipping strikes, these are your best anti 4E fighters. Saying this as a 4E user. If I can motivate myselve to play transport tycoon in the Pacific at some point then I will surely put lots of highly air skilled pilots into these fighters and put them in places where 4Es can reach me but P-38 can´t (or where P-38 aren´t around). You can also use Lillies, Sallies or Helens for low nav attacks. The limited number of twin engined fighters would be too valuable for me to use them against anything else than 4E "busting".

Regarding your question about supplying his troops at Darwin, well I´ve got 2500 av at Darwin and they´re supplied from Alice Springs in my game, the bases in between are all out of supply. No problem at all for me to do so. I´ve got the castor troy edition though and am also not experiencing any of Andy´s "supply problems" in Burma either. And no, I´m not aware of a special trick to pull supplies to units being 20 hexes (or what is the distance between Alice Springs and Darwin) off their next supply depot.

Nice shock attack of the Chinese, lost 2.5 months of inf squad replacements in one turn... probably takes 4 months to get the disabled ones out of disablement state again.
