As to staying back? Why, wouldn't this be a perfect time to disrupt the amphibious invasion ( if that's what it is ) with an 8 range CV strike on the amphibious TFs once they reach whatever their target hex is. All you'd have to face then would be LRCAP from the CVs - which would be light. Sure it would fatigue your airgroups but a nice 8 hex strike ( which can be achieved with some positioning and "follow non-reacting TF with CV TF" orders ) followed by a night-time surface combat strike into the hex being invaded would probably yield some very nice results.

You are discounting the role of spill over CAP from the main carrier force. If you want to see just how effective that spill over CAP can be, just look at my AAR and look at my strike on the Wotje invasion force. The spill over CAP was incredible!

Well, one always has to play the odds. My position would be that even with spill-over CAP you can achieve more ( the threat to any island lies in the invasion TF and ground troops not the CVs ) by hitting the invasion TFs in the island hex at lower risk ( LRCAP + spill-over CAP is still likely to be less than maximal CAP over the CV TF ) and with greater certainty of avoiding a retaliatory strike ( using the 8 hex advantage to put yourself 8+ hexes from Allied CVs whilst being 8 hexes from their invasion TF ).

Is there risk from bad die rolls? Sure, but you plan to minimise that whilst achieving a balance with effectiveness. I think that the plan outlined above is effective, should face less CAP than a strike vs enemy CVs, should have more effect in protecting the island that's being invaded ( in general ) and should keep one's own CVs safe. Even if there is total failure in 3 months so long as your CVs are safe you can try again with a bunch of fully trained new pilots - so long as you keep the flightdecks safe, which is what this plan prioritises.... and which I think is the right thing to prioritise.

You may draw the line in a different place and that's certainly your right. We all have different views.

Um, think you misunderstood me; I'm holding back the bombers on Christmas Island for now.
Carriers still not in range.

9 Betties have been set to attack at 29k feet with 80 Zero escorts up to a range of 9 hexes.
Intended as a high altitude sweep to reduce enemy CAP strength.

2 surface TFs (4 DDs and 4 E class DDs) will move to Palmyra to disrupt bombardment groups which I expect to come in tomorrow.

10 subs already in vicinity so 27 crack Nells on night attack and another 12 subs almost there.
More details later

A quick listing of the last 3-4 turns;

Enemy force closes on Palmyra and launch heavy air strikes.
We ambush medium bombers over PM but despite a super heavy LRCAP only a small part of the fighters engage.
I brought the heaviest air artillery I got for this ball.

The Burma attack again suffer twice the casualties as the enemy.
I'm beginnign to believe that the one with the most big divisions will win in the end.

A few surprises for Andy this turn; Invasion of Luganville, surface intercept at Palmyra and a strike on the invasion force.

- I used 100 Zero's to escort 4 Betties at 29000 feet. Had hoped to get a sweep effect; the bombers went in and Zero's from 4 groups
all escorted...were are the uncoordinated strikes when you want em! This was followed by a second similar strike in the afternoon.

We shot down 16 crack CAG Wildcats but lost twice the number of Zero's.
Still a promising tactic mean to wear down the enemy CAG units. The Allied carriers continue to pump fighters and bombers against Palmyra
and our 4 brave "E"scorts are sunk at Fanning Island.

Found out why I was so confused about fighters being able to sweep non base hexes....they can't sweep non base ocean hexes

The KB elements are slowly drawing closer and this turn I expected the Allied bombardment - invasion fleets to enter Palmyra.
It would then take a further 3 days before we could attack.

But this turn wasn't as expected!

Enemy continues to retreat; We're close but KB and fleets do not have enough fuel for a further pursuit.
We need to:
a) Wait were we are and meet with replenishment fleets
b) Go to Christmas Island to refuel

The first option is the most likely one..our subs will have to provide the parting shorts in Line Islands # Part III

To be continued...

Yep, really intense these turns!

Not sure what Andy's plan was; think he launched the Palmyra II operation when he saw the KB hitting Luganville and miscalculated the time it took
a) to capture Palmyra b) for the KB to get to Palmyra. Actually the distance from Luganville to Palmyra is a bit shorter than the distance from Truk.

So this turn I decided to gather the KB and its supply train to perform a full refuel and wait to confirm that Andy really is retreating.
If he wants us to follow him we're not taking the bait. Our 15 subs now got a chance to score a few hits on the way back to Pearl.

Last turn we lost a flee oiler to subs and 3 other ships without escorts were also torpedoed as they were moving away from the combat zone.
Andy has therefore planned in advance and put a huge sub fleet between Baker Island and Palmyra - Christmas Island.

If this battle is cancelled we have some advantages;
1. I can upgrade all Val's to Judy's - currently only 1 carrier is equipped with the new dive bomber.
2. Soon dedicated CD gun units will be ready and I'm sending the first straight to Palmyra together with loads of mines and a couple of new ACM's

One thing that's certain is that it's not going to get any easier for Andy to take the Line Islands back.
I know how badly he wants them. We have also blunted his first build up at Luganville and Efate.

So yes, our haggis friend might be frustrated enough to raise the threat level from "Pissed Off" to "Let's get the Bastards".
- Scots don't have any other threat levels. This is the reason they have been used on the front line in the British army for the last 300 years.

You are fighting for the line islands? And sacrificing a precious CD gun to do it?

If he's frustrated and gets a little crazy,  that's not too bad.  Could cause him to lean a bit too far out of the window and make mistakes.  And Japan really needs to exploit mistakes and victories as much as possible if it wants a shot at "not loosing" the war.

I wonder what Andy was after.  Either he suddenly got a bad feeling, or really good intel about KB.  Maybe he was taken off-guard by Luganville.  Excellent move, really couldn't be better conceived.  You should have something like that in your pocket every time Andy moves.  He would be forced to split his forces to secure against that. And forces securing the rear areas are as good as defeated forces.

Well, curious how this continues.  Whether Andy truly breaks off another major operation, or whether it is a just another ruse with his CV's lurking somewhere...
Anyway, I bet Andy will go for a different island next.  Christmas, Marquesas, Solomons, but I would be truly be surprised if he would try Palmyra three times in a row as primary target.

Of course I am; if Andy doesn't recapture them I'm going to use Christmas Island as an advanced sub and scout base for the rest of the war and has already stacked the place with rice & honey
Think I've explained my reasoning for fighting for the Line Islands earlier; the one thing that is for sure is that I'm going to fight for the place as long as we have air and sea supremacy.

The biggest challenge with CD guns is to place them somewhere that will be invaded. The Line Islands will be bombarded many times over before this war is over and I think it will be worth the sacrifice.

Janh; All Allied carriers are near Palmyra, that's confirmed so I decided that the Luganville operation could be carried out without carrier support.
The 10 Rufe's aboard our seaplane tender did an excellent job and has shot down 5-6 B-24's and 2 Hudsons and prevented them hitting anything but water.

I now hope Andy will be forced to divert carriers and resources south - maybe splitting up his force as you say; this will put him further back.
By now MacArthur will be screaming for attention towards New Guinea and the PI's while the admirals jockey for Roosevelt's support to advance through the Central Pacific.

If Andy wants the Marquesas he can have them if he pays the price it costs to invade; will divert more time and resources.

Comment from Andy's last turn (which I will open tonight)"
"Could be a very interesting day tomorrow will you keep on coming or will you turn and run":

From this I gather that his withdrawal was a ruse and that he now has backtracked towards Palmyra.
- That's ok, he will have to cross the path of a dozen subs and as stated the Combined Fleet has stopped to...combine and replenish

If Andy is still committed to the invasion we should consider a strategy;
Keeping close to Christmas Island and the LBA there is probably the soundest strategy.

As far as you can, try to keep KB (and the oilers, as they give away good hints!) hidden from his fleet and subs. Cap & Gown has shown how powerful backhand strikes and conserving secrecy+surprise are. They will allow you to pick the fight, and the first attack. The crucial moments.

KB, oilers and fleets combined and refuelled; no sign of enemy attack force.
Force reports 600 ac ready for action.

Yeah, just browsed that C&G has launched some nice strikes! Unfortunately Andy doesn't cooperate well enough to organize a similar party here
We did get some decent results today; 5 ships torpedoed including a battleship.

Had ordered a massive air bombardment against Kalemyo today as I noticed that Andy marched its garrison south.
Non of the 150 bombers sortied...grr, our para unit landed though and we achieved a 3-1 odds and only the 3 forts saved the size 4 AF WNW of Shwebo.
Was only a small construction unit there; NO WAY it would have prevented our elite paras from capturing the place - the jungle defensive bonus awarded non combat units
is too high at times. No doubt Andy will land half a Chindit Bde tomorrow and nuke our troops, but it will be time before he can get rid of us and open up his supply lines again

Now 20 enemy untis oppose our assault; not sure we can get through but since we still have 3-4 divisions to throw into the fray I'm not going to stand down yet.
The para assault on Kalemyo is a new opportunity.

Defending force 45440 troops, 988 guns, 770 vehicles, Assault Value = 1509

Japanese ground losses:
4845 casualties reported
Squads: 53 destroyed, 285 disabled
Non Combat: 119 destroyed, 161 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 8 disabled
Vehicles lost 28 (3 destroyed, 25 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
2629 casualties reported
Squads: 62 destroyed, 84 disabled
Non Combat: 102 destroyed, 117 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 3 disabled
Guns lost 5 (1 destroyed, 4 disabled)
Vehicles lost 73 (36 destroyed, 37 disabled)

Hmm, you seem to be wavering about the assault again, let us look at the figures.
IJA losses in terms of unadjusted offensive AV: 53 squads, 3 vehicles = 56 AV lost. THe disabled ones can repair.

Allied losses in terms of unadjusted AV: 62+10+1+36 = 109 AV.

So, you outnumber him and are causing more casualties today than you lost. Of particular notice is the numbe rof non-combat squads destroyed and damaged. To me that looks like you took a regiment below 50% ready squads today and converted a lot of that Regiment or Bde's disabled units into destroyed units. So, I'd say that is a UK or Indian Regt/Bde wiped out by today's fighting.

Even if you can't push through causing such heavy losses to small numbers of units ( wiping out a regt of 100 combat squads and 300 non-combat squads ) vs spreading the same damage among multiple divisions will greatly reduce Andy's offensive punch for the next year as his replacement rates for combat squads are just far too low to rebuild multiple shattered Regts/Bdes.

Also, would you consider a major concentration of IJA bombers on this target, even if only for a week or two. All you need is to achieve a solid 1:1 once or twice and you'll be well on the way to breaking this concentration., With sufficient disruption of his few divisions a 1:1 needn't be unachievable.

My many smaller sized units; regiments - brigades start to approach the 50% casualty limit and now and then one of them are smashed down to almost zero undamaged squads + lots of destroyed.
Last turn I noticed that 2 more enemy units, unsure what size, reinforced the enemy stack.

The question is to which degree we wishe to smash up our own units; don't like this kind of WWI trench warfare tactics
Reinforcements will be arriving soon; a full sized (70% combat ready) division arrived last turn and boosted AV back to 4000AV despite the reduced and wrecked LCUs.
A full sized reserve Bde from Singapore is unloading at Rangoon while the Guards tank division and a fresh div released from China (470AV) as well as a full strength mobile regiment (180 AV) and 2 more regiments
are moving forward.

Will see what effect these reinforcements will have over the next couple of weeks!

you really have to be cautios with smaller (non div) sized units. I had a couple of tank units or inf bgd 100% destroyed in one turn after doing deliberate attacks. You move in, the unit is at 100/100, order one deliberate attack with a 2:1 superior force and end up with a tank unit or inf unit with 100av being destroyed. No squad left, no chance to rebuild. These whipe outs in one day haven´t made the ground combat model better IMO.

Surface Combat

Lots of surface action near Luganville - Efate.

Our cruisers finally engaged this Allied TF as it returned to Luganville; yet another inconclusive one.

So we sank 2 PT boats, a transport and scored hits on a CL and 2 DDs and took only superficial damage in return.

Andy didn't even care to provide an escort for Castor

It's not only small LCU's that suffer; today a major major division was completely routed.
Ref the very high number of disabled squads.

I don't truly believe in a frontal assault here anymore; I will attempt to close Kathia as an airbase.
That combined with the capture of Kalemyo and a trust into the enemy's rear should improve our position.

All week I've been struggling to find time for the daily addiction turns; now I'm finally home alone and all set with booze and beers - what happens?
No turns....

Great!

Al is probably having his rice pudding while Andy is visiting his crumblies.

Guess I'll go and get myself another serve of my @Hot@ chili con carne speziale; of course served sizzling hot with ice cold pints of Heinz :-)
Did you know this about chili?

Now you're sounding like a Texan! MMMM, Chili. One bit of Cribtop trivia - I like food so spicy it would probably kill most people. Habanero, scotch bonnet, Thai peppers, bring 'em on!
