Then you're welcome to drop in for a bite and chill anytime
Been increasing my chili dosage for 20 years; the Chinese chef now calls me "the one who cannot be broken"

Heh, the staff at Mongolian BBQ here in Austin would give me a salute and intone "spicy guy" with a sort of "he is the one" reverence. We must be cut from the same cloth.

Back in the day I used to eat with the locals in Udon Thani and Phuket and eat spicier than anyone in the local villages.  Now?  Ketchup is about as spicy as I can go ...

So... looks, like Rufe is THE BEST BOMBER BUSTER in Japan arsenal!

Attacking below 1:1 is kinda pointless, but if you could scrape enough troops to attack through Myitkyina, and lay siege to last base south of river...
Jungle combat bonus is big enough to march there just enough forces to not allow Allies counterattack. Since attack will go from north-east, and south is in Japan hands, there will be only one hex needed to cut off supply completely.

Allied troops don't have many negatives now in battle, but extending their supply lines, and daily bombardment, should soon change that.

My wife doesn't stand hot food and she's learned the hard way not to taste spiced dishes
If faith allows we should arrange a WitP session over a uber spiced meal!

Good idea Inqistor; will probe and bomb enemy positions in Burma and try to find weak spots and reduce enemy supply levels.
This turn we bombed Kathia heavily. If we can close Kathia and Myit Andy can't fly in supplies. Does anyone know whether supply flow is disrupted
by heavy base damage?

A small miracle happened this turn; a midget sub penetrated into PH, attacked and got back out again
That's a first time in 50 attempts. Of course the dot over the i missed; the midget attacked a huge tanker...and missed

Even a small dozen Rufe's on CAP to cover a landing is a valuable asset when attacked by long range bombers without escorts.
If the attackers are not shot down they are usually disrupted and - or damaged which will ruin their bomb runs and increase the chance of crashing on RTB.

Think there's a small bug here; the Zero A6M3a got 2x20mm guns too much!

So it's a limited offer!-)

Allies need clear airpath between Pearl Harbor, and Fiji, to fly planes directly. There will be much new units in few months, so surely there will be another Palmyra attempt.
Question is:
How hard will it be to build airfield at Washington Island? There are islands close enough to Palmyra to allow even short-range army fighters to LRCAP.

And obviously you are missing the point, that 3 RUFEs get better results, than 30 TOJOs
How, the heck, they are able to shot even enemy fighters? They have worse flying characteristics, than CLAUDE! In my game they are massacred against any opposition, even SINGLE fighter.

I also think that Andy will come back to the Line Islands; I don't want to add many more combat and support troops to the region though.
Washington Island? Have to take a look at the map and find out were it is first

I never said 3 Rufe's better than 30 Tojo's...I said that a a handful of Rufe's on CAP makes a big difference if the alternative is no CAP at all.
Tojo's have fought evenly with the Beaufighters that have been sweeping Luganville, just have to get the drop on them.

The Rex float fighter will be an interesting addendum; with heavy firepower they will be efficient against enemy bombers.

Not much to report in this weekends last turn; I put an LRCAP over PM but enemy heavies hit Lae and Madang.
I'm slowly bringing in more base force units and Air HQ's to New Guinea - New Britain - Solomons region.

I tend to agree that the Line Islands and Marquesas are a strategical must for Andy.  Unless the direct line of communications with OZ is secure, he cannot effectively fight down there.  Imagine if he would loose a naval battle in the Solomons now, and had to transfer the cripples past your Netties to the West Coast... a long long way.

But Andy could take a slap first at another base to draw out your carriers, while only feinting an invasion.  Or invade, but immediately follow up with a major Line Islands operation.

I think Andy was scared at 2nd Palmyra after he only could guess the location of KB (where the AO sank), and saw what happened in C&G's AAR in the exact same situation.  I think he needs to know where KB is, before he risks a strike.   Or he is just playing for time, making you burn fuel, and waiting for more of his carriers to arrive.

Yes, that's much my reasoning too Janh. Andy's repeated attempts at securing Palmyra and the Marquesas shows that it's a thorn in his side.
The Line Islands is actually both a buffer zone to the Marshalls and Carolines as well as a break water to the enemy's build-up in the South Pacific.
I'm constantly bringing fuel and supplies to the forward bases to enable the Combined Fleet to operate freely.
- Also inclined to believe that Andy lost hear and withdrew his invasion forces before committing himself; hi did the same near the Marianas in our first game.

Each time Andy sorties he bring most of all Allied combined fleets.
This usually leaves us rather short in surface combatants. A bit uncertain if we should counter this by gathering more of the Combined Fleet
at Truk, Rabaul and Kwajalein. Currently we have 1 battleship, 4-5 heavy and 3 light cruisers as well as 20 destroyers and a CVE in the SRA.
Feel that we need this force to form fast strike forces, support evacuations and counter-invasions.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Feb 05, 43

Again a quiet turn; our sweep over Chittagong claim 6-7 enemy fighters without friendly losses.
We have bombarded in Burma over the last couple of days with mixed results.

- The thumb rule for jungle combat is that defender's AV will be doubled while attackers AV will be divided by ca 2.5.
If the defender got 1500 AV it will be adjusted to ca 3000. In order to achieve a 2-1 odds the attacker thus needs ca 8000 AV.

Our fast transports have completed the withdrawal from Luganville; a small garrison is left behind.
No further sign of enemy activity near the Line Islands; it's probably time to return to Truk to upgrade all our Val's with Judy's.
Next month production of Jill's will commence.

I've been pondering over how to deploy our land combat troops prior to the massive Allied offensives that I'm expecting from 43-44.
A few considerations:

1. Atolls; these are mighty hard to capture even when defended by only a small garrison with strong forts.
-> Will place naval guard units or similar on most atolls; key atolls will have 5-6000 garrison troops.
The plan is to delay the enemy and cause as many causalties as possible thus allowing LBA and the KB to counter attack.

2. Major LCUs: should only be deployed in key strategic areas that should at all cost be denied to the enemy.
-> Rabaul, Truk, Marianas, Luzon, Singapore, Java and similar.
If placed in favorable terrain with enough supplies it is possible to tie up and wear down sizeable enemy forces.

3. Scattered presence: I'm pondering on placing small garrisons and supplies on strategic places. This may be bases that will come within fast transport and para drop range
of the enemy. By placing a 20 AV garrison with 3-4 forts it will require a more dedicated effort from the enemy to establish himself e.g. on a size 1(7) airfield base.
-> Any landing by less than 100% prepped invasion forces will suffer serious casualties.

Key: Powerfull counterattack forces.
We need to establish at least 2 strong strategic response forces: One in Marianas-Truk-Rabaul region and one in the SRA - Java?
-> A fast amphibious force must at all times be ready to load and deploy these forces.

Combined Fleet: Should at all times be positioned so that it can provide a strong offensive and support any counterstrike.
-> Truk is a good place for the Combined Fleet.
-> Fleet oilers; can be divided between the 2 strategic response force bases at Truk and Java.

Air Force: Strong LBA units should be available to both strategic response force bases at Truk and Java regions.
-> Key: Build defensive hubs. Multiple built up bases with a major Air HQ in the center that can support torpedo bombers.

If we at all times adhere to these concepts and rely on a dynamic and mobile defense and offense we should be able to make life difficult for Andy.

"The first and most important rule to observe...is to use our entire forces with the utmost energy.

The second rule is to concentrate our power as much as possible against that section where the chief blows are to be delivered and to incur disadvantages elsewhere, so that our chances of success may increase at the decisive point.

The third rule is never to waste time. Unless important advantages are to be gained from hesitation, it is necessary to set to work at once.
By this speed a hundred enemy measures are nipped in the bud, and public opinion is won most rapidly.

Finally, the fourth rule is to follow up our successes with the utmost energy.
Only pursuit of the beaten enemy gives the fruits of victory."

- Karl von Clausewitz

No turns tonight so here's a few screens:

Score chart for those of you that's interested.

We're ca 21k points ahead; 35 to 14k points. This means Andy has to close a small gap to avoid an autovictory by 1/1 44.
This means that if we gain another 5k points in the 10 months remaining of 1943 Andy will need ca 7k points to get below a 2-1 odds.

Industry

I have halted a huge number of subs in construction as well as a couple of CLs to enable us to accelerate 4 carriers.
As you can see we're running a small surplus of naval construction points and a small deficit of merchant points. Not sure why but I've been constantly low on merchant points
even after halting a large number of merchants.

I've halted armaments production; the surplus seems very stable.
We're now building up a HI reserve, currently at a little over 500k. Should increase this to at least 2mill or so by mid to late 44.

Vehicles production has been sharply increased as well.

Carriers and Carrier construction

Currently we have the following carriers:
6 Pearl Harbour carriers
1 Junyo class carrier
2 light carriers
3 escort carriers
1 training carrier (not for operational use)

Current total: 7 fleet carriers, 2 light carriers and 3 escort carriers.

2 light carriers converted from CS type ships need a further 200 days to complete.

Under accelerated construction: All to be completed in 43 stretching from July to December.
2 Taiho class carriers
3 Unryu class carriers

A further 2 escort carriers will also be completed by mid 43.

We're therefore looking at a potential carrier force at the end of 43:
12 fleet carriers
4 light carriers
5 escort carriers

The last carrier reinforcements to arrive in 44 will include:
3 fleet carriers, 1 light carrier and 4 escort carriers.

Unless we loose any carriers Japans max carrier strength can grow to 15 fleet carriers, 5 light carriers and 9(1) escort carriers.

You get gobs of merchies added to the queue later on. You'll have to increase merchant yards to see them.

Just remember Clausewitz had no clue about naval warfare. Never crossed his mind. Some thoughts

"The first and most important rule to observe...is to use our entire forces with the utmost energy.

As long as it doesn't guarantee you get killed. Men are easier to produce than ships.

quote:

The second rule is to concentrate our power as much as possible against that section where the chief blows are to be delivered and to incur disadvantages elsewhere, so that our chances of success may increase at the decisive point.

The decisive point in the Pacific War is the exact area where your enemy will be the deadliest. Count the cost before you hit him right in the spearhead.

quote:

The third rule is never to waste time. Unless important advantages are to be gained from hesitation, it is necessary to set to work at once.  By this speed a hundred enemy measures are nipped in the bud, and public opinion is won most rapidly.

A truly apt point....the Japanese must act like ancient light cavalry once the Allied juggernaut is fully formed. Move in and strike then run away to fight another day.

quote:

Finally, the fourth rule is to follow up our successes with the utmost energy.  Only pursuit of the beaten enemy gives the fruits of victory."

Only when the enemy has been thoroughly routed is pursuit germane. Pursuing the remnants of pickets and skirmishers is sure to run the pursuers into a maelstrom of destruction.

Of course all good strategies need to be revised before put in use.
For Japan tactics will change character from 43 to 44 to 45...

Ordered a slight increase of merchant yard production.
Also stopped Tojo, A6M2, Betty and Nell production.
With 250+ Tojos' in the pool we have a viable reserve.

The Oscar IIa has converted to the IIb and we're now only producing Helen IIs medium bombers for the Army Air Force, ca 105 per month.
We're not waiting for the Jill TBD (03/43), A6M5 (5/43), George (7/43), Frances (8/43) and finally the Frank around the end of the year.
Not succeeded in accelerating research; when I change a research type from one type to another all ac are damaged and they barely turn into prototype production.
- There should be a chance of accelerating the George; these research ac will then all convert to the Frank.

I'm still combining division and brigade sized LCUs. Plan is to relieve as many of the smaller garrison units from major bases as possible and replace them with
regimental sized LCUs. The smaller LCU's should be used to garrison secondary bases and I just can't get enough of them.
- A full sized reserve division has just arrived at Rabaul.

In Burma I'm still reorganizing troops.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Feb 06, 43

Quiet turn again; we loose 2 destroyers at Luganville.
I was expecting the Allied surface group to return and sent the troop ships back to Rabaul without the last damaged squads and
sent 2 fast transport groups to pick them up. The large group got away but the last train out got caught.

Been a quiet weekend as I've been away;

The last couple of turns have seen little action.
On February 10th 175 bombers hit Imphal as we're trying to close down the place.

Enemy para's tried to recapture Luganville but our rearguard was strong enough to deal with them.
Australia is also completely quiet; strange that Andy isn't interested in any offensive action there

Andy has all but closed down all operations; no doubt to receive new advancted fighters, rethink strategy and gather fuel and supplies.
The KB is 2-3 days away from Truk were it will enjoy some much needed R&R and upgrade all Val's to Judy's.

PS! Japan needs 3-1 in points to win an auto victory on 1/1-44, not a 2-1. There you see how updated I'm on points and scores; no chance for an auto victory in other words.
It will be a long slog

Andy's using Mohawks in 43 ? you really must have trashed the allied fighters over Burma. Congratulations. I would imagine from your perspective that quiet= good .

As ever good luck and Banzai !

I suspect that's the bottom of the barrel with green pilots just to keep an air presence and that this is the quiet before the storm.
No doubt Andy is hoarding 4Es, P-38's, Spits and Corsairs for his next offensives...

But yes, quiet is good

Been little time to update the AAR lately!

The one interesting thing that's been taking place is that the Allied carriers have returned to Palmyra.
We've tracked em with planes and subs and no transports have been spotted so I assume it's a raid.

This turn enemy CAG bombed Palmyra; in return we launched a small Betty strike escorted by 80 Zero's.
Again to shoot down as many enemy elite CAG fighters as possible.

At first I though the Betty's had stayed home and the fighters pressed on but suddenly the Bettys appeared.
So while 14 enemy fighters were reported lost we lost 7 Betties and some 30 Zero's.
- Without a dedicated sweep option over open sea hexes it's very difficult to get at the enemy CAP before the strike comes in.

I've increased the defense of Palmyra with more mines and an engineer unit; a para unit can be airlifted in if required.

Last turn we bombed Chungking; recon indicated large amounts of enemy ac there.
A vast number of enemy fighters opposed our attacking force; obviously many enemy units were on training missions and we got through without suffering losses.

In total we destroyed some 15 enemy ac, not much but it could have been much worse after stirring up a wasps nest.
Don't think Andy has many places to move his Chink AF so we will of course continue to sweep and bomb Chungking to keep the size of the Chinese AF down to an acceptable level.

Enemy carriers continue to hover around Palmyra without launching further attacks; still no sign of enemy transports.
I'm not keen on being baited by Andy so let him play with out subs until a purpose reveals itself. Having the KB run across the Pacific for nothing isn't tempting.

Also tried sending a surface group towards Colombo; an escort carrier TF provided CAP. The force was however spotted 2 days sailing from Colombo so I decided to abort the mission.
Pickings would have been slight anyway.

Have upgraded many of our best ASW ac groups with Lily's and Helen Is; these ac carry 250kg bombs instead of small 60 and 100kg fire crackers.
All older type Army bombers without armor will be delegated to this kind of duty while we slowly replace all Army bombers with the armored Helen II.
- Using one type of main bombers makes a lot of sense; production wise and operational wise.

Over the next week or so we will receive 2 new light cruisers; these plus more than a dozen Shimakaze and Akizuki class fleet destroyers is a welcome addition in Scen 2.
These supreme ships will function as carrier escorts, flotilla leaders and provide added punch in surface combat.

This was a fun turn!

We returned to Chungking; since the Tojo's can't sweep from max range (8 hexes) I ordered the Oscars to perform a ground attack
escorted by 42 Tojos. Since we didn't need crack fighters sweeping the enemy to beat em it worked well. Ca 25 enemy fighters shot down.

We also sent sweepers over Calcutta; the enemy's main air base in India. The long range meant I only could use Zeros, Oscars and Nicks.
The game is overly intent on separating sweeping squadrons from each other; still we did well. Ca 30 enemy fighters shot down.

We also put a heavy LRCAP over Kalemyo and gunned down dozens of enemy light bombers and fighters.
In total we destroyed close to a 100 enemy ac today, loosing about half that number in return.

I'll settle for such results anytime in 43!

Enemy carriers also pounded Palmyra again; we're just taking it for now.

YEAH! Our nimble little plan about engaging the enemy carriers of Palmyra with modest forces succeeded

a) The I-5 (RIP) sent 4 torps against the Saratoga and 3 hit; the last causing a fuel storage explosion!
- The carrier is heavily damaged and may sink. Unfortunately the I-5 was sunk, a posthumous Bushido cross is awarded to the entire crew.

b) We ambushed a CAG strike over Palmyra and shot down 39 bombers and 9 fighters without suffering friendly losses!

I considered letting 5 fast KB carriers race towards PH but decided against it; we have a 50% chance at sinking the Saratoga and even if she survives she will be out of the battle
for a long time to come. Loosing such a critical resource at this time will cost Andy; the pendulum now swings in the favor of the KB.

In scn #1 you only get 1 Shimakaze. I would love to have more of those guys. They have a max speed of 38 knots and so can stand off a long way from a target (10 hexes) for a fast in-and-out. They also get surface search radar fairly early on for the Japanese. Having a Desron, or even a Desdiv of Shimakaze's would be sweet.

No trace of the Saratoga today..she's a tough ole lady; not sure even 3 torps and a fuel explosion is enough to put her permanently out of action.

I hit Warspite on a bombardment run in my last game. Not saying minis are great but it seems using them as defensive "monitors" is the best bet.
