Our AMC posed little danger to the enemy convoy...panic did!

Enemy barges invade Washington Island...next to the Yamato et al that were busy sinking a PT boat last turn

Unbelievable.  Imagine the surface raider had been a CA or CL...

Andy must be fuming after the last two turns.  Even after taking off 1/3-1/2 of the bomber losses as fog of war, you probably treat yourself with a good whiskey tonight...

You should have 3 land based dive bomber groups that are fully resizeable, plus one or two others that will not resize to fit the ship, but can be used anyway. Judy's were my first choice for the CVEs. Nice plane. Better in some ways than the Jill since dive bombers seems to have a higher hit percentage, and with those 250kg bombs, they really pack a wallop. Indeed, during my battle of Ponape, the 250kg bombs were able to score penetrating hits on the Maryland and West Virginia (deck armor 108).

If you want a clearer picture of enemy plane losses, check out tracker, it seems to not use FOW. Either way, that is a lot of B-17s. I have gotten up to 10%+ kill rates, but never that much.

A good Heineken at least

Yep, I got 2 large dive bomber groups at Rabaul; one has been upgraded with Judys.
There are 3 more in the Home Islands, one restricted. Using them to train KB pilots; may place some on the new CVL's when they are converted.
- There is a siz 9 Val unit at Noko Hiva, will check if this one can be expanded.

500kg bombs you mean

My experience is that tracker shows much the same as the air loss menu...
I think the 3-1 in favor of friendly fighters manned by crack pilots caused havoc with the enemy bomber formations this time.

Less action today; enemy air force withdrawn from front lines in Burma.
We bomb Akyab with little effect.

At Fannington Island airfield size will be increased to 2 tomorrow.
36 Oscar IIbs are already operating out of there; will base 27 Helen II bombers here as well to continue suppressing Palmyra.

Surface Combat

The biggest overkill ever; the Yamato and sister nukes a barge convoy...
The comfort is that the convoy was loaded with Marines!
- Was Andy re-embarking these troops from Washington Island or bringing in more from Palmyra?
There are no more ships at Palmyra so I think the first is the case, but why?

This is Trackers stats for Allied air losses during the "Rangoon Raid".
Almost the same as in game air stats; 136 ac lost including 49 heavy bombers.
- Andy should now have learned that the LibII is unarmored and very vulnerable; to be used for search and anti ship duties only.

I've now destroyed some 165 B-17s, someone said the Allies don't get too many of them; how many is exactly "not too many"?

In Scenario 02, the Allied player has the following numbers of B-17s available:

B-17D - 54
B-17E - 223
B-17F - 48
Total - 325

These totals include all B-17s in at-start pools, at-start squadrons, replacement rates, and re-inforcement squadrons. Please note, many of the replacement squadrons and at-start squadrons equipped with B-17s have withdraw dates, so the effective total will be less than shown.

Andy is shuffling his poor marines around... hmmh, maybe soon engineers as well (though none reported lost)?  Maybe he saw that opening Palmyra might be tough without parking his USN CVs there until the damage is repaired and the airfield can sustain its own covering operations, so he thought building an airfield on Washington island could be an alternative?

My gut feeling tells me that if you can keep an eye on the position of the US CV's and make sure KB can safely cover a landing convoy from a hidden position (for the beautiful surprise attack from the rear), you should throw two divisions onto Palmyra now.  The situation might be much worse there than so far considered, and Andy might be frantically rushing to get his CVs resupplied and back into a covering position to resupply/reinforce the island before you can react.  He has been so determined to take it, I doubt he would withdraw the Marines now to safety.

I was cracking up at the image of Yamato and Mush smashing barges until I had a Dewey in Manila Bay "those men are dying over there" moment. US Marines deserve better, but a great victory nonetheless. Truly a sign of Andy's desperation IMHO. The division on Palmyra must be in bad shape.

Whatever he wants with this Island, so far the costs exceed the benefits.

Doh, that's not a few Thx for the info ckammp.
No withdrawals in this game so Andy gets a chance to destroy them all; halfway there already!-)

A counter invasion is an option but it will be weeks before that can be arranged. Let's see what happens in the meanwhile.
No idea what the Washington Island thing was about; don't Andy know that we have our largest base east of Truk nearby?
My only guess is that Andy needed to reduce number of marines on Palmyra before they ate up everything; I remember how overstacking
made supplies dissappear at an incredible rate earlier on.

Aye Cribtop; as Japan I feel that I'm allowed to have less respect for human lives than the Allies.
I won't criticize Andy but it doesn't feel right to throw away people like this.

Anyway; today we reclaimed Washington Island. It was a smooth little operation. Sea bombardment, fast transports landing an elite naval guard unit and a separate
TF unloading supplies. Enemy troops were huge, another 62 squads destroyed. Can't be much left of the 3rd Marines on Palmyra by now?

We're spotting PT boats in the middle of the ocean; it would be possible to ferry them south with AKs and ship them to Palmyra, but again a very dodgy and suicidal tactic.
Hope this isn't the case. I've withdrawn Japan's only MTB Squadron and will recall it to Fanning Island when ready.

Fanning Island has now received 27 Helen bombers; these will now take over the suppression of Palmyra and the naval bombers can switch back to their primary role.
In a long range ferry operation super duper uber long range transports have moved an Air HQ from Roi Namur to Fanning Island in less than a week; only support units remaining.
- Each turn 2-4 enemy Catalina's and Coronado's are reported OPS losses. No doubt the cost of flying to Palmyra.

The Yamato battlegroup returned to Christmas Island (breaking orders) and refuelled and armed. A bit surprised; main ammo on the Yamato's successfully reloaded by our AKE at Christmas Island?
- Looks like Santa lives on Christmas Island and provides all the gifts we need

The Junyo has entered the docks at Christmas Island too and upgraded her Val's to Judys and engineers are welding shut the 2 torp holes in her hull.
In a short time she can rejoin the KB with all but her 12 major float damage repaired. I have also requested that a repair ship is sent to assist in this important work.

In Burma things are quite again; I'm providing all squadrons with plenty of trained surplus pilots, this is a good thing to keep them in the field.

Air Combat

We bombed Chungking again, and Tennant Creek as well as Palmyra.
The Helens made their debut and destroyed a Catalina on the ground.

Slowly I'm replacing all Army bombers with the Helen II; all old bombers are relegated to training or ASW duties.
It will be very convenient to have only one type of Army bomber.

Good luck with the CVs, PzB! He is anchored to Palmyra. A sort of reverse Guadalcanal for him, IMHO.

Yeah, long time Andy can win this one, but there is also a chance that we will loose all of his teeth about Palmyra.  He starts to have a fixation for this island...  Well, strategically he'll need to clear or isolate it, but he is not very concentrated and focused on this target. Too early, too little.

Thx; this is the time we need to be both prepared and aware.
- One mistake now and we may loose both the Line Islands and most of the KB.
- Play it right and we may yet not have seen the end of the beginning!

Capturing the Line Islands was like crossing an invisible barrier; this is now the Gateway to the Pacific!

Only had time to look at the next turn;

Ordered several subs to intercept the expected path of the enemy carriers and the I-121 returning from patrol was given a slight course correction.
- She intercepted perfectly placing a torpedo into the huge carrier Lexington

This must be getting on Andy's nerves, we've torpedoed most of his carriers by now.

Still no carrier battle; the question is if we should continue to sit it out or seek battle.
I'm more in favor of the first - if Andy decides to relieve Palmyra we engage when the timing is right.
The alternative is to leave Palmyra to us and provide more railway men for Burma as someone said

To me it depends on how many CVs he has vs how many are in KB. If you get to a 2:1 ratio (counting CVLs as 1/2 a CV) go for it, otherwise continue to attrit him. Be careful about hitting him when he reinforces though. You don't want half your strikes hitting xAKs while he has only your carriers as a target.

All that said, his strategic position is poor vis a vis yours. Trying to use range to pull a Cap&Gown is a valid plan, but pick your spot such that only his CVs are in range, not any transports. Easier said than done.

The risk of an offensive carrier battle (in contrast the back-hand surprise) is much higher, even discounting (usually poor) LBA involvement in defensive plans.  However, while waiting time plays for allies, it plays against Japan in terms of CV clashes:  He gets so many CVE, CVL, and CV very soon that he will have numerical superiority at all times.  He then could afford to loose a major battle at a later time and would not even be slowed by that.   Plus, the AAA upgrades, the new fighters and new bomber types will make them much deadlier and harder targets as well.  Japan must simply search decisive CV clashes as early as possible, and defeat the USN piecemeal before late 43/44.

Now you could make a difference if you manage to win a major CV clash -- Lex damaged, and Saratoga out of the picture!  With KB still hidden, and him in the uncertain, cards are quite good. The only thing necessary would be predicting where he will move his CVs next turn, and plan a (7-)8 hex strike:
- If it engages, great!
- If it is out of range, withdraw again and hope to be unspotted.
- If it was out of range and spotted, draw him back into the line islands..
I assume he's route could be directly back to Pearl now that he was spotted, has seemingly brought no convoy to cover, and even has Lady Lex torpedoed...

That is indeed true; I tried to come up with an estimae of enemy strength.
- The Sara and Yorktown are definetly out of it and this leaves;

Lexington - 90ac
Enterprise - 90ac
Hornet - 90ac
Wasp - 76ac
There is 1 or 2 Brit carriers present:
Indomitable and Formidable carrying ca 60 ac in total

By this time of the war Andy will have received another half a dozen CVEs (we've sunk 1) which means 6x30 ac at most.
In all some 580 carrier aircraft in 6 fleet and 6 escort carriers.

That's my best guesstimate.

The KB has 7 fleet carriers, 2 light carriers and 2 escorts carriers; 11 flattops carrying ca 615 ac.
In addition we have ca 200 ac in the Line Islands.

Counting CVEs as CVLs this means 9 Allied vs 9 Jap carriers: we do have an edge since Andy has more CVEs but the odds still only slightly favors us.
We also bring 7 battleships to act as bomb magnets.

No reason to rush it in other words; no significant reinforcements will be added to either side until June-July 43 (Essex - Taiho as well as some CVLs and CVEs.)

I agree Janh, but we should not forget that Japans main aim for the rest of the war is to keep a fleet in being. This fact alone will be enough to slow down the pace of the Allied offensives and
counterstrikes. If we loose 5 carriers now even the loss of 6 enemy carriers will not be worth it in the long run. A battle fought now must be fought on such favorable terms that we either win a clear victory; if this isn't possible we shouldn't pursue battle at all.

The next turns will again be decisive - will Andy stay on the battlefield or yet again head back to PH?
Each time Andy turns back we're given a chance to further improve our positions in the Line Islands and prepare to recapture Palmyra.

I would recommend changing everyone to follow TF 4 and/or 5. You don't want an air combat TF in the lead. A surface force should be in the lead. Maybe even put some BBs in the surface group.

putting a torp into Lexington is great, takes a hell a lot of time to repair that beast due to the huge displacement. I had her damaged in my PBEM too and it took approx twice the time to fix similar damage an Essex class CV had.

I'd like to echo c&g's wisdom.

And make sure that the TF commander is not too aggressive to prevent the surface group from reacting towards the enemy, you want to maximize your range advantage after all.

I did all that before completing this turn; a surface combat TF is now in the lead
- The picture was taken after the TFs  converged.
The lead guys are often the ones that stumbles accross subs so no capital ships in the lead group.

Quiet turn; enemy force withdraws towards PH.
Looks like things will continue like this until the ownership of Palmyra is firmly decided one way or the other.

Had to scuttle the AV that was hit by a scout bomber; caught fire and burned to cinders.

Each time the bombers on Fanning Island fly to strike Palmyra a variety of Zero's from Christmas Island and the KB decide
to escort despite being set to completely different altitudes. This is hopeless as it wears out my fighters, cause ops losses and reveal KBs position.
- No way to fix it unless we lower range or move KB away.

This turn 3 groups of Zero's failed to follow the Helens while 40 fighters did...together with the designated Oscar escort

Lost a DMS to subs this turn; in return we sank an old DD scouting NE of Palmyra.
We also put another DC in an enemy sub.
- On 2 occasions enemy subs tried to torpedo our AR ship heading into Christmas Island, quite happy non of them managed to hit it.
So now we've increased our repair facilities.

We also bombarded Palmyra, inflicting further casualties and damage.
Enemy long range patrol planes continue to fly into Palmyra, think they're based at Hilo.
It this continues enemy patrol plane stocks will become depleted.

There are now ca 9850 enemy troops reported on Palmyra.
I still fail to see why Andy wanted to land his best troops in a place he couldn't get them back out from unless going toe to toe with the KB and Line Island LBA.

No sign of the enemy; increasing our search and scouting efforts.
Have also replaced 27 Kates with 27 Judys on one of the escort carriers.
Much better, would have prefered to do the same with all Kates on light carrier, escort carriers and the Junyo.
These ships have way to few torpedoe sorties and 500kb bombs carries quite a punch.

Over the next few turns more base force units and engineers will arrive at Fanning Island.

3 quick updates; not much happening.

A Chink division crossed the river north of Shwebo to cut our lines.
I think 99% of the troops massacred themselves against our reserves.
- Planning to attack and pursue back accross the river.

I will bring a full sized division prepping for Palmyra to the Line Islands and unload it at Christmas Island, rest it and then
consider whether we should wait or continue with our invasion despite of not being 100% prepped.
- Another question is whether we should really land a full sized division or try with our Amph Bde first.

Andy is slowly extracting parts of the 3rd Marines by air; doesn't this mean he will be evacuating all his healthy troops
while the damaged ones are left for last? Somehow I think a quick assault against Palmyra may yield results.

Yes, you need to strike quickly. Strike quickly or never...

Preparation, in such a fluid situation is over-rated.

Despite me having 60-70 fighters on LRCAP over Palmyra huge numbers of Catalinas and Coronados continue to pick up
troops from Palmyra; recon says numbers are down to a little over 4500 now.
- The annoying this is that we can't prevent this from happening despite having complete air superiority.

The airfields are closed but I notice some C-87 Liberatos keep flying in supplies?
This aircraft type is not supposed to be operational until 8/43

Not a very likely scenario; with our fleets at Palmyra the Catalina's would have been hard pressed to find places to land and pick up troops.

There is now a vast fleet of Allied subs around the Line Islands; our ASW units work hard to suppress them.
Enemy fleet is still at PH.

The sitzkrieg continues until one of the sides are ready to move again.
Otherwise rather quiet.
