Status: offline 		I notice there is not armor. That seems strange. One would have thought that self-sealing fuel tanks would be standard on all liberators, in fact all planes by this point.

Ah, so they come in with a squadron, not from the build/reinforcement queue. That explains it. Need to be careful with them then, since their are no spares for a while!

there are some British Liberators with a huge range of 29, carrying radar and 8 250lb bombs with an armor value of 0. These drop out of the sky like flies if they meet enemy fighters, I´ve lost 6 or 7 out of 10 against the same number of Tojos. Have never used them ever since. This showed me how important armor of at least 1 is. The bombers got a durability somewhere above 60 but this doesn´t seem to help.

Talking about RAF Liberator GR.III's? They were naval patrol bombers and not supposed to duel it out with Japanese fighters. Their purpose was to fly naval search missions and hunt subs.

yeah, these are the ones. Thought these would be patrols but I didn´t expect them to drop out of the sky like Nates when facing Thunderbolts.

Half-hearted attacks can be invitation for a disaster. But else, as long as you know where Andy's CV's are, I would also vote for a direct counter-invasion without loss of time. Similarly valuable could be a carrier raid between Pearl and CONUSA now -- maybe Lady Lex is traveling back home now (with the rate of 4 hex that his CVs made last?).

If you are LRCAP'ing then maybe the distance is great enough that there are few fighters on station at one time?

Really? I'm going to have to check my ranges and reports to see what I can.

I've been able to move troop cadres off an island as my opponent is landing with CV air attacks coming in and not lose a plane. But, you know, maybe he did not have any CAP overhead. Have to ask.
EDIT: But I am still surprised I was able to do it. I would think CAP leak would have been enough ... the CV's were only one hex from the beach and I know he had CAP on his CV's as I lost about a dozen Nettie's going in. Did get 2 torp hits though. ;) Good enough for me. (low bar. )

Thanks for sharing this ... I might well have been under a mistaken impression ....

Status: offline 		OK, so clearly we (my opponent and I) have both had some REALLY lucky die rolls with respect to our transports.  Since he is NOT a regular visitor here, maybe I can use this NEW knowledge to my advantage ... I need it.  He just put 2/3 of my KB into the yard last night.  Don't think I will lose any, but I'm down a lot of CV's for a couple of months (or more) ... Bad day for the IJ at the office yesterday in my "world".

Status: offline 		LRCAP was 4 hexes away; used Oscar IIs and Zero's. Between 20 and 30 were constantly in place.
There were also a TF with a CL and destroyers circling the atoll. No way it would be possible to set down to pick up troops.
Now there's only 3000 troops left....

Don't think we need a full division to recapture Palmyra anymore. Will divide the assault division into 3 parts and send in one in ca 3 days.

Not sure it will be possible to make game fixes to this, a house rule is most likely required.
- No troop lifting if enemy is in _clear_ control of sea and air space. Dropping of paras would be an exception.

The last few turns has seen little action in the Line Islands except for air evac.
We have however built Fanning Island to size 3 and unloaded a small coastal battery unit there and increased supply storage.
The first KB unit of TBDs has been upgraded to Jills.

In Burma the story is different; Andy has moved his main air base to Madras - Calcutta was obvious not safe.
Last turn an army crossed a river into Kalemya; I had ordered the tanks there to attack in order to support the expected shock attack.
- Only the tanks attacked, obviously there is no shock attack when crossing a river through a hex side you controll yourself.
After experiencing so many (and unwanted) shock attacks when crossing river I expected it.

The initial attack with tanks didn't too to bad and caused more enemy casualties than friendly.
Air attacks were inefficient and 3 forts had been built. This turn the combined Army (3100 AV) attacked; our AV was as usual halved and unlike last
turn enemy AV was adjusted from 1000 to 1800. We still reduced forts from 3 to 2.

A full size Oz division is on the road to the north - had half way expected it to move into Kalemyo this turn and a small para unit tried to move behind the base.
Since the Oz div didn't move the small raiding unit was squashed. Odds are good but we need to replenish supplies; pretty sure we won't be able to destroy the defending force
before the Oz div arrives but this still gives us a good opportunity to destroy more enemy troops.

We still have a reserve left that can thrust into or behind enemy rear areas behind Kalemyo.

Status: offline 		According to Andy Palmyra airfields have been open all the time but for 1 or 2 turns.
- I find this next to impossible. One thing that intel with 9/10 detection has constantly shown between 65 and 100 field damage, this kind of intel seems to be notoriously unreliable.
Another thing is that the base was utterly wrecked when captured and how can the few engineers attached to the Marine Div first fix 100 port damage and then open the fields in a few turns?
Finally we've been bombing and bombarding the place really hard.

Status: offline 		There are over 100 Combat Engineers in 3rd Marine Division, so in theory quick repairs are possible, but it is obviously only colonialists propaganda. Get there forces ASAP, before he begin flying fresh units. There should be only disabled squads left. Most artillery is on the ocean bottom, so any armour would be devastating.

Bold move with "Schwarzkopf left-hook" attack in Burma. If successful it will destroy all forces, and effectively end future offensives in theatre. It even open gates to India.
Although, tanks makes in jungle only 3 miles. get them on road immediately.
I would suggest gathering several large SNLF units, to quickly transport them by air, when bases in northern Burma fall. Getting Imphal will not complicate supply situation much, because supply movement cost in jungle is not that great. But extending front, by getting weakly protected bases, by air, and quickly getting there few units, will shake whole defensive position. If only base will be caught with substantial supply, it could be another point of local offensive.

Now, as for CV battle. Japan is facing more challenges with time, in that matter. Obviously the sooner the better. When Allies have planes from war beginning, Japan have huge advantage. Then they upgrade their AAA, their fighters, then attack planes, then torpedos begin working.
Currently, Japan gets new attack planes (good idea, with rearming CVEs first), and Allies will soon get HELLCATs, which will definitely end Japan advantage. So, if there should be battle, it will be better, before HELLCATs appear at all.

PS. Using enemy supply, to create barge fleet, and invade nearby island is quite brilliant idea. But this could be also excellent evacuation method:
When you know, you will lose island in next attack, just create barge fleet, load troops, and retreat. Better to lose possibly, only part during evacuation, than all by surrendering. Plus, maybe bombarding fleet will react toward already escaping barges, and came out of protective LRCAP umbrella? Plus creating barges lowers amount of supply enemy gets after conquest.

Status: offline 		I vote drop the paras in Kalemyo. Halving his AV even once could be the difference at the right time (say, when forts are at lvl 1) and this battle is a potential theater killer for Andy. Great job in Burma.

Speedy, I think PzB is more after killing of hordes of Andy's troops rather than securing specific forward bases(?). I agree with the idea to be ready to plant some paratroopers on the line of communication IF this would enable the capture of a large number of forces Kalemyo. It wouldn't harm and forces Andy to fight those as well before trying a reinforcement. Obviously that would have to be well coordinated timewise with the attacks on the stack at Kalemyo, because Andy will just bring in a couple more divisions to clean up the paras and reopen the supply route -- but hopefully there is nothing left to be supplied at that time... Very good move PzB!

Status: offline 		Hi PzB - I've wondered about the 100% airfield damage before.  From what I have seen I I've come to the conclusion that routine gets confused by runway and airbase damage with the result that if, the airbase is heavily damaged (+ a bit of FOW) the percentage can still be very high even though the runway has little or no damage, so I wouldn't pay much attention to the damage levels shown - but I'd guess you've already come to that conclusion.

BTW the port gets repaired last, runway first and airbase second, so airfields can be opened very quickly with lots of engineers.

Status: offline 		I'm afraid we're verging on a thread hijack here, so I'll hush after this post, but my understanding of PzB's intentions are to take Kalemyo, thus trashing the units there (destroy was a poor choice of words as I agree they will be able to retreat, but retreated units are damaged enough in AE that they require lots of rehab).

This in turn will (he hopes) swing the balance of power in his favor such that he can eject Andy from northern Burma with further damage to the Allied army, thus setting Andy back by quite some time. When Andy returns with re-built armies, he will face troops in the jungle along the Tojo Line, forcing Andy to confront the reduction of attacker AV and doubling of defender AV in defensively favorable terrain. All of this adds up to inability by the Allies to exploit the Burma front until very late in the game, if ever. I rate this as a good success because in AE other Japanese players have been forced to retreat quite early on (late or even mid 1942) to a line near Rangoon because of the difficulty of defending the open terrain in Central Burma combined with the ability to supply troops through the jungle caused by the supply algorithm.

You're all right in one way or the other!
Capturing Kalemyo won't win us the war in Burma and enemy troops will most likely be allowed to retreat - our tank unit moving in from the flank will need another 22 days to close the pocket!-)
- But as stated, destroying the enemy units at Kalemyo will deplete the enemy armory further and give us a chance to trap or unhinge the allied left flank.
I'm also an opportunist; knock down one door and suddenly you find not one but two new doors behind the first one.

Ah yeah, I remembered the other way; that port repaired first.

We outnumber the enemy in Kalemyo 3-1 and are inflicting heavy causalties with our regular attacks.
Soon most of the enemy units will shatter. I have observed that Andy has moved his air force to Madras, we also spotted convoys unloading at Madras and troops moving east.
My assumption was that this would be reinforcements - and these would most likely move to Kalemyo via Imphal.

So I used this intel to intercept the enemy's rear in order to:
a) cut of rail supplies to Imphal and beyond
b) delay the arrival of enemy reinforcements

After careful considerations it was decided to launch 2 para units against Tezpur.
The paras achieved a 2-1 odds and only forts saved the base; annoying but we now have a potent force blocking the enemy for some turns.
This very turn an enemy unit was observed in the hext west of Tezpur.

If Andy, as I think he has, has moved his AF to Madras he will struggle to move enough ac towards Calcutta in order to interdict and bomb our annoying little force.
If our honored opponent wanted to capture Burma and make life miserable he managed to do so - for a while. Now I'm trying to return the favor!

But there were more interesting events today!
First we had numerous sub attacks; 2 enemy subs were reported hit by depth charges while our light cruiser Tama at Palmyra took a hit that didn't cause serious damage, a PB was also hit and
will most likely sink.

After all this activity enemy carriers appeared WEST of Palmyra!
The launched 2 strikes on our damaged CL and destroyers and sank the CL and a DD.
Our CAP over Palmyra claimed a dozen enemy ac.

This is very interesting; what does Andy want to achieve with this attack?

We had a full scale one sided carrier battle from 8 hexes with support from LBA today!
With the "Z" Flag flying from the top of the mast Nagumo led the Combined Fleet against the Allied Fleets.

I will divide the battle into different parts.

PART I: Prelude

In the hours before the battle the fleets manouvered and several sub-asw attacks took place.
2 Jap subs were sunk outright, one in Pearl Harbour trying to launch a midget - the midget is still at PH..
1 enemy sub was sunk, "sub breaking up sounds heard". Another sub was damaged.

Near Palmyra an AG was torpedoed and sunk, the enemy supplid another squadron of PT boats to the island one of which hit a mine.
A cargo ship was also sunk near Suva.

Status: offline 		OK, excitement has been built. Now don't let us die of suspense.

(Damn lucky to be able to hit from 8 hexes like that. No way to know just where the allies would be during the turn.)

PART II: Morning Strikes

The first strike to go in was 9 Judys with a strong Zero escort from Palmyra meeting 119 enemy CAP fighters including Sea Hurricanes.
Half the Zeros failed to appear and the raid took heavy casualties and failed to break through the enemy CAP.
- If nothing else it disrupted the enemy CAP and weakened it before the KB strikes arrived.

The KB's first strike totalled 172 attack ac and 130 Zeros.
Attacking from 8 hexes mean that only 6 Jills carried torpedoes, all Kates carried bombs.

Only 98 enemy CAP fighters were left, a reduction of 21.
The Zero's handled most of the CAP and only ~10 bombers were shot down by fighters.

I was biting my nails as the bombers went in, the Luck "E" escapred...as usual but we set the WASP on fire and hit the Indomitable and Hornet with single bombs.
The Indiana took a torpedo while the South Dakota took 6 500kb bombs that put her on fire. 5 cruisers and a destroyer were also hit!

The attack was made in heavy cloud which reduced accuracy.

Then 5 Nells with a heavy LBA based Zero escort came in and swept away the rest of the enemy CAP and put a torpedo into the Indomitable.

A second KB strike then went in: 54 Zero's, 22 Kate's and 41 Judy's.
Only 4 enemy CAP fighters were present and were swept away.

The Indomitable took another 2 bomb hits (incredible tough ship), the Wasp took another bomb, the Hornet 3!!!! which lit her up like a christmas tree.
The Indiana took a further 6 bomb hits, the South Dakota 2 while the heavy Cruiser Chester also was hit.

The CLAA San Juan was sunk and the Indomitable ate another torpedo, still no heavy damage...amazing!
More importantly the Hornet was reported dead in the water.

The final morning attack saw 9 Nells score 3 hits; one against the CA Portland and 2 against the South Dakota which severly damaged her.

What a start, we have the enemy at our mercy and half the day is still left
We severly damaged 2 carriers, 2 battleships, sank a cruiser and damaged another 4 heavy cruisers and a destroyer.

In total I didn't observe more than 4 enemy carriers: Enterprise, Hornet, Wasp and Indomitable.
Don't think Andy brought his CVE fleet and both the Saratoga and Lexington were missing from the line of battle.
- This is perfect, we outnumber the enemy 2-1!!!
