In fact too bad that KB was just a couple of miles too far west.  Could have been a terrible awakening for Andy's battlewagons, though it probably would also have hurt your air wings if Andy had his CVs still capping them.  Maybe better this way.  Although his amphibious and supply convoys are the strategic target, his carriers probably should to be targeted first.

Now that KB is sighted, Andy will either become a little careful, or will come out hunting.  For a quick moment I thought about suggesting to hide KB somewhere on Java, and what for the right moment to hit Andy's CVs from the rear during his next move (I would bet on a reinforcement/resupply of W, or perhaps more likely now: another amphib ops against Timor or so).  But he will likely have picket ships that will draw your naval strikes, and a make surprise flanking move impossible.  Alternatively, a preemptive strike with the carriers against Andy's supply lines (those towards Port Hedland?) might be an option, but likely also a waste since it will get attrited by allied LBA.  Well, probably might be best to withdraw the CV into the shadows again, though waiting for Andy to exert the initiative ain't striking me as a particularly clever move either.  Really a though problem now...

you are doing very well PzB. you sink some of his ships each turn without losing any of your capital ships. sooner or later it must have an effect to his transport capacity in the region. it was bad luck that your carriers were not in strike range of andys BB-TF. i dont think that he had any sort of CAp flying over his BB-TF. i mean someone who even forgets to add radar! into an invasion TF will not do this kind of micromanagement to set LRCAP on ships out of range of your LBA.

pull the KB back...the next opportunity to strike something with the KB will come for sure since it seems that andy will try to stay at w...whatever and try to hold the base. you are in the better position with heavy LBA in the region, a intact carrier fleet, your highspeed bombardment runs and your light surface forces killing allied transport capacity every turn.#

banzai! banzai! banzai!

Well, one more such operation, and Allies will have no undamaged heavy warships
Use the airforce on ground attacks. Daily BBs bombard (at day maybe?) should quickly disable most of Allied units. I have actually different experiences with naval bombardment. No matter of range, I always hit lots of planes.
Anyway, just try to get little closer, to also use larger DD guns.
Just remember about HQs. Also, some independent AT units can deal with tanks.

Also, remember, that LRCAP over TFs are less effective. I think, over CVs is even less, than over normal ships.

And set some BETTYs on maximum range night attack. Maybe your SSs will catch some retreating cripples.

Oh, about those transport caught by your subs. Are they lonely, and unescorted? Where are those catches?

Use subs to generate sightings near W and put a few units on night nav attack as suggested. The key is getting the night phase sightings so the planes launch. See Capt Cruft's Downfall AAR for his tactics to accomplish this. Subs on transport mission with timid captains don't attack but will radio the airfields.

You could try to slip KB through the Sunda Strait and come at Andy from the West, but for obvious reasons this could be a high risk move. Just something to think about for the right set of circumstances.

Isolate W from supplies and the base will fall. If the SLoC can't be closed, Andy will eventually kick the door open.

Andy has an astonishing willingness to incur casualties. Are we sure he wasn't a Soviet general in a past life?

Turn is finally back to Andy; takes a loong time to set up everything every single turn...need to get a deputy

Thx guys, really appreciate all good advice & input!

Waingapo will be quiet for a little while when Andy replenish his fleets.
Nothing more to hunt back south within LBA range so we may as well move back to Soerabaja to replenish ourselves.
Having that fuel depot so close is a blessing; much better than near Line Islands.

Have used to opportunity to restock Christmas Island with fuel; when enemy subs and carriers return it will be much more difficult restock.
After going over our troop dispositions I've identified another 3 divisions that can be moved to Waingapo; this means moving regiments in to cover for divisions
defending certain bases but I doubt Andy will invade Rabaul or Hong Kong anytime soon. Also looking up another 2 HQs including an Area Army.

_If_ we remain in a favorable position at Waingapoe a ground campaign will be started.
Most of our other bases are fairly well protected and we have most of our air support in place so it's possible to move LBA both north and east if required to.

When I returned some midgets to the pool they just dissappeared so I'm not to keen on moving midgets and without their mother subs that's a complicated process
and in enemy hexes they run out of fuel on their own very quickly.

Our LBA is quickly getting back to strength, but another week or so would do miracles!
Enemy 4Es are hitting Memboro, need to switch Nicks, Tonys and George's to CAP to reduce their numbers.
Think many of the fly at extended range; must be hard to keep operational and supplied.

I've had crack naval bombers on naval night attack for many turns and our subs and TFs have continously connected with enemy ships.
The only reaction have been "RTB because of poor weather". Think range is a bit long, 1-5 hexes is more optimal for night attack me thinks?

Yes, the intercepts are harder to make at night. Cpt Cruft was hitting the enemy about 5hexes off Formosa IIRC.

So, does all your damaged ships safely reached ports?
Japan lost, like 1 Cruiser, and 4 Destroyers?
While Allies "2 Carriers, Battleship, and numerous cruisers, and destroyers"? (actually no CVs, but 2 extra BBs)

Check the morale of air units. I yet have to see reduction in Japan fighter unit, but bombers are vulnerable. You can probably rotate them.
Also, if Allies will try to pump out water, before reaching Perth, it would be interesting, for Yamato, to pay visit in small-port rescuing operation.

They works like planes, when you disband them, it takes some time to reappear in pool. Also, they spent fuel in weird way. Sometimes they just hover in hex, and spent no fuel. You can not refuel them at sea, but sometimes they are refuelled, when your TF was in the hex during turn. Anyway, even without fuel they will attack, and they accumulate damage very slowly (and you can disband damaged).

Yes, more or less Inq. Look at list over damaged Jap ships below.
We lost CA Furutaka early on, a CL at Darwin and another later. So 1 CA, 2 CL and 4-5 DDs have been lost so far.
The list of damaged ships has grown though; good to see the Mutsu and Tone doing so well after taking such a beating.

I have managed to dent morale of Samurai pilots
- I did return the midgets to the pools months ago; instead of becoming available after 14 days they've gone AWOL!

Andy keeps his carriers just north of Broome.
4Es are put on naval attack; they go after a surface combat TF over Waingapoe and don't hit anything but CAP.

Without knowing it the KB had to stay nearly stationary this turn as most ships had replenished during the high speed dash
Ops were sky high, movement down to 1/0...Not sure what would have happened if Andy had attacked.

Had a bad time thinking about it, so much that I couldn't sleep last nigh and had to get up and run the turn
All is well fortunately!

I've noted very little, in your combat updates, about his subs attacking your shipping. Am I missing something or are they not there?

OPERATIONAL REPORT FOR Oct 12, 43

TK Tennan Maru collides with TK Zuiyo Maru at 61 , 84

A handy trick is when everything else is wrapped up bring up the S(hips) menu and click on float damage to sort by float. Anything that's at sea and has float damage has collided, been bombed by naval search, or whatever. You can click to locate the TF and then detach the damaged ship(s) for a return to a nearby port.

Tracker's great too but in terms of looking for collisions, etc. the in-game tools work fine.

That's true Erstad; I try to do it whenever I remeber it!
Especially subs are difficult to keep track off..as well as convoys running awol and low on fuel.

In the post today I included the many ASW reports; it's not like US subs are not active but I try to treat them with extreme prejudice!
My main objective for this turn was two fold:

1. Destroy enemy PT boats - a qualified success
2. Get the KB safely back to port - also a success even though it potentially could have developed into a dangerous situation

Enemy bombers hit Memboro today; poor weather and CAP handled them nicely and we inflicted heavy losses on enemy bombers and fighters. I have long time identified Memboro as a "Schwerpunkt" and we now got lots of engineers in place to repair battle damage. It's only the Allied carriers that can provide relief for the poor invaders of Waingapo!

As my current game is around the same time like yours and Andy´s (3 days earlier) some numbers for you to boost your morale:

You killed around half of Andy´s P38H, two third of his P38G, more than half of his p47, a little more than half of his F4U-1 (out of production now) and F4U-1A started the production this month. Does not mean it will get easier but if you can attrit his top fighters it always good.

(He has huge numbers of B24-D1 left and B24-J started recently production so do not expect to realy attrit his 4E but killing them is always nice as it lowers morale and they take a long time to repair).

The best fact to see the Allied are in severe need of fighters is the fact that Andy uses crappy P-40 in big numbers. The P-40N5 for example is just as bad as the P-40E in 12/41, so who would want to use the P-40E in late 43? Other than training squadrons, none of my units have used any P-40 (except the super charged ones) at that date.

Nope in any game with the Japanese player granted control over production the Allied fighter pool remains pitiful well into 1944-even with only moderate losses. Scen #2 just makes it worse. The Allied 2nd generation planes are better than the Japanese 2nd generation but the numbers more than compensate for that.

WOOOHOO!
So, how many pilots currently reported as MIA?

Some statistics:
P-47 production 56/mth from 7/43 until now 196 produced, already destroyed 158
P-38G production ended 8 months * 20 = 160 produced, destroyed 127
P-38H production 40/mth from 6/43 until now 180 produced, already destroyed 103
F4U-1 production ended 9 months * 30 = 270 produced, destroyed 160
P40K production ended 11 months * 65 = 715 produced, destroyed 369
P-40N5 production 55 from 7/43 until now 192 produced, already destroyed 28

One more Australia airfield sea bombardment (I would reccomend the one, where P-38G are stationed), and Allies will be forced to downgrade to earlier models.

Stacking small airfield with high-service models was bad idea, in the first place. Half of them was probably grounded, because of maintenance, not combat damage.
Whole situation is actually interesting, because there was no attrition war, and those loses are caused in just a several days of heavy battle.

PS. I just realised, that Waingapoe is Australian base. Does that mean, that Andy can put there Australian restricted units?

Do not forget the planes which arrive via reinforcements.
There are around 245 P47 ,215 P38H, 300 F4U-1 and around 180 P38G produced or arrived via reinforcements at mid 10/43.

I don't think he can put restricted units there. The nationality of the base is irrelevant, the command to which it is attached is was matters. When the base is captured, the command changes to one the command of one of the units doing the capturing. As he probably doesn't have any restricted units taking part in an invasion, the base can't have changed to Australian command.

I am not sure that that is the case here. I have captured some bases with unrestricted Australian units in India and Burma and the bases got Australian Command (R).

Very strange, I'd guess that's a bug, but it might be that I'm completely wrong.

so after reading all this allied fighter plane reinforcment and production numbers, we can be sure, that after 1 more week or so of fighter sweeps and naval bombardments andy will be totaly out of modern fighters and must use inferior types against PzBs 2nd generation fighters.

that will make the job not easier for andy.

While I heartily agree that the number of allied plane replacements is pitiful compared to reality, I will say that the number of new groups that come on line do increase the number of ACs available markedly. Downgrading new sqds to older types to drop the modern fighters into the pool is a major way I keep numbers up.
I am nowhere near this date, but I can state that I had 20 P-39s in my pools at one point. I received 4 sqds in 4 days which dropped 100 more P-39s into the pool. Since you don't have to have 25 'other' fighters to downgrade/upgrade the original group, this can augment numbers.
Just saying that just looking at replacements isn't an exact science with the numbers

This I worry has been overlooked in some of the calcs. While production rates to the pool are not that high, the allies get so many new groups continuously. You need to add those into your calcs .... they are not small numbers.

A quick update; a bit behind now...

The question about killing of Allied fighter pools is a mute one, but keeping the T-bolt pool low is a more relevant approach

Last turn was interesting:
Again intercepted the empty mega convoy moving north from Marquesas with a CL and an AMC.
The ships have to little ammo to achive great deeds but we got a handfull more.

At Waingapoe we again fought past dozens of PT boats, mostly out of torps, and sank the remaining transports unloading there.
A huge bombardment closed the fields for the day and destroyed 93 ac on the ground including 15 P-47s and some Corsairs
There were mostly P-40s on the fields, but now also SBDs and 2Es.

I don't think Andy should have anything else than fighters on Waingapoe; it's a size 4 field - easily overstacked.
Trying to gain air superiority with 150-200 fighters plus fielding 50 bombers there is uber optimistic.
Guess the cries for help from that wretched place will bring carriers back soon!

Oh, ah! Interesting. Andy must soon return with his flattops, no way he can hold Waingapoe unless he gets his "roof" fixed. But maybe he will already bring a second wave to take another island? That would mean real trouble.

That was the reason for my "gross estimation life half, more than half" and so on for my first post regarding to numbers. As i have a own game currently now exactly on the same date (14 oktober 43) i can just add my allied numbers to get quite an exact estimation of fighter numbers. Till mid of 11/43 there will arrive further 75 P47 through groups on the East coast which can easily be transfered to the front through downgrading.

In addition the F4U-1A with their almost 80 each month hurt. Overall tide will turn regarding to fighters even when Andy scarifies them like he does currently.

I would try to contain Waingapoe, it is the perfect farming place and even when it sometimes get to lvl 8 it is still no lvl 9 base. Lvl 9 with 600 4E + 2E and a zillion of fighters (even when they are outdated) is a serious problem for any Japanese player. Drop 10 AO with fuel and 10 AKE into the base, park all you battle wagons and PTs at the base and it is almost impossible to take that base out for Japan.

I just really enjoy this AAR with Japan able to put on some fierce resistance in the SRA. I feel a little bit that currently in the game after 6/43 the allied steamroll is much to fast especially if you assault through the SRA. Almost noone currently heads for the Mariannes as it is much easier to go through the SRA (at least everyone expects it).

So good luck and continue your extraordinarily defensive work :)

disagree. Andy has landed reinforcements and forts are certainly going up quite quickly. Ok the situation is unconfortable for him, but once the forts are high up, he can start thinking offensively again. PZB is slowing him down right now, at low cost. Good. But this is just that... HE might need 2 months to clear the situation and get extra bases around, but then all hell breaks loose.
