Andy has gone on vacation to the States; still brought a laptop and is intending to continue to send turns...will try to convince him to take a vacation from AE as well

Not had time to update the AAR so we're 5 days behind..will catch up in a couple of posts.

No, haven't seen it! It's not like we're not engaging in heavy air to air combat, the challenge is that 400 enemy fighters sweep a target before the bombers go in.
We return the favor and no one wants to place the majority of their fighters on LRCAP over a base that can easily be swept. So we have a stand off until Andy got time and capacity to go for Rangoon base cluster.

I don't have a chance to strike on land in Burma because Allies got more air and more ground troops than we do, local counterstrikes and defense is all we can do.

Well, Manila and Davao can both be main fleet anchorages - think that should work out well.
Lots of transports going to all these areas with reinforcements now; I can't prevent Allies landing in any single given location with overwhelming force but this won't matter unless they win sea and air supremacy (first - after). So we can delay them and counterstrike. Plan is to put a small garrison on every single island, 10 av modified with forts and jungle = 50 AV. This requires a regimentan combat force to defeat. There will be no free bees, just resistance, delay, counterattacks and frustrations!

5th through 7th of February:

We start a bombing campaign against Allied ground units in the open terrain near and at Prome.
Allied air forces sweep and pummel most bases in central Burma. At Prome with 4 forts our troops that are statinary with lots of AA guns still take heavy casualties from air attacks.

Andy is moving his vast force from east of Ramree Island into the clear hex north of Prome. A very dangerous move as this makes him vulnerable.
Our fighters can sweep his hex and bomb his troops. A tank brigade moved ahead and entered Prome, shock attacking in the progress and taking heavy losses.
4-5 enemy divisions are attacking our tank division combat group to the north east and we're just barely hanging on. Reinforcements are moving in and our air force is bombing enemy troops to reduce their combat efficiency. It's touch and go whether we can hold here but falling back a hex won't matter for the strategic situation.

Looks like Prome will be a decisive battle, if we have to withdraw from this hex there will be no way to save Rangoon as Allied troops will trickle in through the left flank which can't be defended since it's in the open.

Strange; 20 of our Franks were suddenly on CAP over Prome - checked ALL Frank units and not a single one was within CAP range

Seems like aggressive fighter unit leaders can decide to set out to defend a base on their own...with not so good results.

This turn I decided to try our low naval attack and torpedo bombers at Ramree Island.
Numerous attacks by crack pilots failed to score a single hit against the elusive enemy destroyers there.

We also bombed enemy ground formations and counterattacked enemy forces at Taung Gyi and Prome.
At Taung Gyi we mauled the defending force and will continue to exert pressure here to force Andy to divert troops.
- At Prome we routed an enemy tank brigade and HQ; this hurt him a bit.

Our ground attacks on Allied ground units in the open have been effective but now more troops with more large AA guns arrive and make the attacks more costly.

Ground attacks on Prome; Allied and Jap increase, it's a cauldron of death there now...!
2 more Indian divs shock attack into Prome and take heavy casualties but not as heavy as they should have been.
- We have 2 fresh divisions in the jungle hex east of Ramree Island. One of these divisions will march to Prome.

We have to succeed in reducing the Commonwealths ground army in Burma.

Number of sorties shows, that sides have comparable number of airplanes (and I am not sure, if it includes Russian units). Japan even had advantage, when (probably) Allied CVs were in port, so you CAN have more planes in theater.
And if you are going to strike on land, you must rout enemy in first attack, because longer you are stay in clear, the more damages you will take.

But look closer, there are more, and more P-40Es. Allies are short on planes already. When Hurricanes IIb will show up, it will be time for counterattack (and they will have hard time to actually shot down armored planes).

Also, sometimes you hit more squads, than HELENs bombing, nice!

Damn VACATIONS!

I have checked reinfocements schedules, and discovered, that Japan just received over 120 new fighters in ONE DAY!
It seems, that in next months you will receive 300 new planes per month! Have you enough pilots to man them all?

Also, it seems soon, Allies will get around 150 new P-40 models in Aden, but then there is no extra fighter groups for few months. You can expect the last boost of Allied fighter power, and then you should be able to break their back, before monsoon. Keep the pressure.

Andy is back from his vacation and the war is rolling again!
Third page, were shall it all end

We have thousands of fighters, but only 1/5 is modern George, Jacks and Franks.
As you can see from attached screen, got plenty of training units. I've not deployed squadrons with outdated fighters, just waiting for our factories to catch up and we will be ready.

Problem is that each side sends out sweeps and keeps major air bases at 6-8-9 hexes away from main enemy fighter bases; sweeps at that range against strong CAP is quite painful!

Ok, 2 turns: Was very annoyed at first one! Air Air Force was ordered to hit enemy troops at Prome with all they had to support a ground attack.
Clear weather but almost none (except from 1 small) strikes went in; allied strikes were all over the place as usualy

- Our attack at Prome with prepared troops in clear hex thus failed.

In return our tank division NW of Toungoo was finally pushed back.
We did well in the air though, sweeping enemy hexes and setting a CAP trap over Port Moresby.

Somewhat better this last turn! Our counter at Taungy Gyi finally succeeded and a large Chink corps and a regiment were routed with heavy losses.
Our belated air strikes also went in and hit enemy at Prome while subs claimed a merchant and a destroyer.

The enemy ground threat is looming bigger and bigger in Burma, never seen so many troops march through a jungle before; supply problems and malaria? Nope...

So we're stuck in my least favorite theatre of war for another 3 months or so.

Have you been seeing any American Divisions or armor in these stacks yet? I'm curious if Andy has released any restricted west coast units to support this theater, or even more interesting if he brought SoPac or SWPac units over.

Yes, I noticed the zoo of different colors flying in the basin as well. Obviously there must be some US troops around besides the Commonwealth and Chinese. But Andy apparently doesn't want to commit them yet. Either he is waiting to funnel them in once he finds a crack in your line (or gets whipped...), or he keeps them in readiness in case they might be more useful elsewhere ...

Mostly Commonwealth and Chinese troops so far.

This turn we both had planned surprises; I had moved the KB just SSW of Rangoon to strike on enemy shipping at Ramree Island and
provide support for ground strikes against enemy army at Prome.

Andy sent his fightes to sweep Rangoon and his 4Es to hit the airfields there.
In Rangoon I had set most of our fighters on escort or sweep missions while the bombers were ordered to hit Ramree and Prome.
If weather had been ok all these units would have been airborne, but severe storms grounded them...so when the 4Es arrived (did of course fly and obliterated all 9 of Rangoons airfields
despite of weather being SEVERE STORMS. Both sides lost 100 ac in air to air, but we also lost 200 ac on the ground, mostly bombers. Losses in pilots were not to bad, 33.
So no disaster, but Rangoon is closed.

How the heck can 4E bombers hit small parked airplanes in severe storms *shakes head*.

KB presence was probably a surprise and could trigger a US invasion in Central Pacific.
Zekes provided support for Rangoon and claimed many kills - got so many replacement units for KB now that I can as well use them.

Both me and Andy now got dilemmas.
How will Andy react to KB presence? We can strike on ships, airfields and ground units.
How should we handle our air resources when Rangoon is closed with 96 AF damage?

My biggest headache is the inability of our bombers to attack the enemy ground troops at Prome, Andy could march them over 2 clear hexes and a river without me being able to
get enough strike planes airborne to hurt them. So with 3500 enemy AV in a clear hex that can be pounded to rubble by air power we have "only" 1300 AV plus 4 forts.
Leaving Prome will leave a strip of open hexes down to Rangoon.

The War in Burma will continue tomorrow (unfortunately)

Oh, in that report I see the 32nd Infantry Division - that's a US div, and normally is in SoPac or SWPac. Plus the 4th Marine Reg. is in there too. In the scheme of these stacks not huge I guess.

The reason I ask is because I am wondering if he is putting all his eggs in one basket or if he WILL push a little elsewhere. (Like centpac, while KB is away, the allies will play).

Wouldn't be a bad thing to get Andy to focus on the CentPac, we got plenty of space and islands to trade for time there

Plan is to move Combined Fleet to its new anchorages in the PI archepelago, showing the flag in Indian Ocean is more of a symbolic measure.

A bit dissappointed that KB didn't launch more strike on shipping at Ramree Island though, numerous targets and only a couple of small strikes.
Using the opportunity to send in 3 smaller surface combat TFs to sweep Ramree and then 2 fast battleships and 4 heavy cruisers will attempt to bombard.

Andy is pretty sure he got air superiority now, and maybe he does but most of our fighter units were intact after yesterday's attack on Rangoon, mostly some Tojo's and bombers that took a beating. So I've moved them to the surrounding bases with a higher CAP% - still ~700 fighters so Allies better not come in light next time

Our bombers will continue to "try" and hit Prome, it will be difficult to maintain our position there and the jungle starts to look tempting again.
That means Rangoon will be in a very tight spot...the hored of Allied troops and planes is very difficult to stop.

Hey, this is Feb 44 and the allies do have a hoard. However the consequences of '43 are huge.

The allied naval arm isn't the all powerful hammer that it usually is. Yes, by the fall he will have again regained superiority in naval air not only in numbers, but more importantly quality. However, not the +2x that the allies normally enjoy. You are in a position with the KB and LBA that when he comes in via the CenPac that he is coming with only a slight advantage on his first attack. Attrit even a couple of CV's and he is in trouble. Attrit a couple with each landing and he won't have the muscle to make it to Okinawa. He gets 8xCV in 44 and 9xCV in 45. I'm not counting the CVL/CVE's here.

The timetable of the game doesn't give him time to push via land from Burma. Sure, he has the muscle to eventually walk all the way to Fusan, but he's only got 2 years left. You are fighting exactly how you need to in Burma. Force him to take a month to move his lines 6 hexes. At that rate, he won't even be in Hanoi at game end from India.

That leaves north from Darwin. This is where his LBA can support his landings. End of March '44 he really starts to get 4E replacements, about 15 new groups of B-29's every 3 months or so along with about 100 4E's per month (all types) in production. So, sometime mid-April is when I would expect his move here.

Be watching with interest to see your counter to his 4E masses.

True Pax, but now it's 1944 and Burma

I know we can't hold on to everything but I had hoped to keep Rangoon through monsoon season in 44.
Seems impossible to stay in clear base hexes no matter what though...

We don't deploy more forces to Burma than we can afford, the buildup of Cent Pac and SRA are well under way but
of course, many army division had to be sent north.

This turn Andy swept and bombed Bassein and Pegu, the bases surrounding Rangoon.
With only 100 and 120 bombers both bases are now closed, and this was achieved in heavy rain...
So there is no way of stopping the 4Es.

Allied losses were high this turn, 122 bombers and fighters lost in the air.
We lost a similar number but 80-90 of these were on the ground and "only" 20 pilots KIA.
- Hopefully Allies lost at least 100 trained pilots.

So it's a costly move for Andy, now he's clearing the way for his Army in Prome.
Guess he wants to bomb our army there heavily and undisturbed before attacking.

We hit his troops and caused 500+ casualties from the air today and our army in the north
routed an Indian regiment. So yes, we preserve and delay - the air force's sacrifice buys
the army time

The navy successfully bombarded Ramree Island and eased a little of the pressure from there.
So in total not a bad turn but Andy did what he wanted to do, close 2 bases with 2 attacks.

Yes, but you are doing great. At least that's my opinion.

Nice to see your Frank and George holding up so well against the Corsair. Trading 1:1 and you're getting another 0.5 4E on top of that. Nice.
20 B-24's, that's 10 days production gone in one day. Very Nice. And as you say, he lost a lot of good pilots today.... and yours continue to gain skill/exp. That's a long list of +10 kill pilots.

I know we're not in big trouble yet, but Allies can probably afford these losses and it's a little disheartening to see such a strong position ripped open by only a couple hundred 4Es..!

A big majority of Allied losses was that large Beaufighter formation that came in alone and got butchered.

Since the Burma railroad isn't completed in this game I can only rail damaged air units betweeen bases in Burma, the congestion in Moulmein is quite painfull...Have had to move out the undamaged ac and withdraw the damaged ac and pilots to avoid complete chaos. Will be great fun to reorganize our air units.

I'm expecting heavy attacks on Prome now; will try to counter with what we got!

Our division between Prome and Toungoo is forced back; it was supposed to reinforce the division forced back yesterday but arrived too late.
Now both divisions have been routed to Tungoo, making the Prome position untenable.

Allies have so many troops that even 2 divisions in each frontline jungle hex can't contain them.
This means that only a shorter frontline with a stronger concentration of troops will become necessary.

I will delay the fall of Rangoon for as long as possible; the first step is to move out non-combat units like air support and base forces.
Port Blair - Victoria Point - Bangkok area is the next series of strong air bases; have to keep out of enemy fighter sweep range from the Rangoon area when the time comes.

It is pretty hard to close airfield for CAP (Remember what happened around Java recently?). IIRC formula is "less damage, than 50+5*airfield size". So for lvl 9 it needs to be below 95% to still be operational. Also remember, that you can CAP/LRCAP from every lvl 1 airfield.
Also, try to disperse your bombers. If there will be bad weather over one base, the other can launch.

147th(Sep) Infantry Regiment have similar name to those Alaska garrison units. It can be one of them.

LOL, i didnt play this game for a while, app 2-3 years (who can remember anyway?!) but i wouldnt be nervous about Burma theater (probably i missing something in this Allied Edition, but me too thinks you are doing just great against Andy McHammer)...

Even if Rangoon falls (both you and me knows that Rangoon cant be defended) you are still in good position. IMHO, you should already start think about your strategy "what after Rangoon falls?"

1. Rangoon will become Allied hub both for endless supply and jumpgate for attacks on:

a) nearby and more distant IJ AFs
b) overland offensives towards MOulmain and Rahaeng
c) amphibious attacks on your exposed wing (Tavoy? Victoria Point and Malaysian peninsula)

So i would send additional (ground) units to Burma theatre, but using them (preparation points) for line Tavoy-VP-etc-Avuthia?! instead of sacrifying them for 1st defencive line). By the time he managed to "liberate" Tavoy and Moulmain you will get real "Gustav line at Bangkok" and buy several months, imho...

AS long as Andy doesnt know where is KB, he will not dare to attack too far from his LB umbrella (i hope). So, you should be safe in southern part of Malasyan peninsula (but keep an eye at Sumatra, he could do something crazy there), as long as he doesnt get noumerous brand new CVs or he become sure where are you keeping KB (not that we imerial samurais have many choices in 44 then keep KB at PHI, right? ;) )

As long as you can keep Bangkok and Singapore you are safe from "Allied virus" spreading through "inner circle", the heart of our empire.

If you delay him at Tavoy and Malasyan peninsula, then Bangkok you will won the war.

As Gary Lineker used to say:

Thx for the support guys and good to see you here again Pauk!

- Not sure you would have been so confident if you played this Burma game, Allied concentrations are huge.
And yes, I'm strengthening the flanks and as long as KB rules the waves an amph op would be most welcome!

Andy knows that KB was near Rangoon a few days ago, so now we need to make it dissappear again.
We may win on point one rainy day, but a phyrros victory beneath bombed out base hexes isn't very appealing.
The next big big thing is to crush Allied sea power one more time, that would be the nail in the coffin.
Until then we just have to slug it out in Burma and prepare the other fronts for action.

Rest assured, Rangoon et al have been thoroughly closed, just look at todays bomb rain.
Even though one base operates at minimum capacity damaged ac are not repaired and will be destroyed on the ground.
I do keep my bombers in different bases, seems to be jinxed by weather

A ground assault north of Toungoo achieves a 1-1 odds and our smaller LCUs takes a heavy beating.
Massive air assaults in Rangoon area. We continue to reorganize our air armies in the rear areas.

Burma

The northern part of the front is made up by smaller regimental size LCUs that won't last in major ground battles against larger sized units.
Seems like we have no choice but falling back to a line just north of Rangoon; if we are to hang on to this we need to get ~2000 AV in each hex of the front.

Obviously i was misguided by the promises of Gods of AE who all were determined and kept yelling all around the forum, "AE will make Burma overland offensive impossible"

well, you have no other choice than relocate/relase divisions from other theaters to
Burma. It seems pretty clear (at least for me) that Andy put his cards there.

And wow for you, you are member of this forum for more than a 11 years. I really think that Matrix should/must reward you with a, lets say, a free copy of the War in the East!

Yes, supply makes it very difficult to maintain an attack in Burma. And in reply to Pauk above, Andy appears to using mostly Indian units for the heavy lifting and they are larger than US divisions with a good replacement rate to start which increases every year. Thus I suspect mostly Indian cards are here at the moment.

Hey PzB.
Hope I will soon have a scanner of mine, drawing silly stuff eludes me for months!

Hey, just wondered: how developed are the enemy defenses in southern India? Is there any real allied air force presence over there? Any naval asset?

Just saying, if you already have an idea of how Ceylon is defended, and if it isn't much, well I'd gladly invade the place, or some other place along the coast. Because he probably believes you forever on the defensive, because you most probably don't have a huge navy facing you, and because it would be kinda fun, don't you think? You definitely lack any side theater where Andy could use his precious 4Es, and setting foot on Indian territory sounds like one he could pick. It's all about using few resources for big results.

With all this stuff in Burma he is probably running low on troops in the backstage.

Another thing: it's been a long time since you've last been seen raiding his rear in the Pacific. Any plan to dispatch a small CVE TF to look for trouble on the open ocean lanes?

It's been a long but fun haul indeed, I've found it more and more challenging to find time to write an AAR as work and family easily may suffer.
But the great people and interest in WitP makes it difficult to stay away

- Unfortunately the game against Al (Wobbly) is more or less on hold for a period as sleep deprievation over difficult strategic decisions takes its toll

My slight addiction to a certain tank game and pull towards War in the East make me wish they would invent cloning soon..

But back to da game; Unfortunately I've sent a lot of reserves to Burma and many of our divisions have now been routed without many replacements coming forth.
If I wish to send in more troops they will have to come from strategic bases like a) Victoria Point b) Medan c) Java
The division in Singapore is currently rebuilding and I've sent the Bangkok division north to anchor the right part of the front.

The large Brigade in Rangoon will switch places with a division in need of R&R and move to the front.
Except for all these mentioned available reserves the only large size LCUs available are Brigades that I currently assign to the Marianas, PIs and SRA.

With the allied army near Prome wouldn't it be time to abandon the positions near Lashio and Taung Gyi? If the allies break through and get to Pegu there would be a sizeable haul of prisoners waiting for them.

Taung Gyi is easy to "abandon" with a fast road leading south; for now I'm content with marching some troops south.
Remember that we tie up quite a few Allied troops in this region and pose a threat to the Allied flank.

Lashio and the northern line is held by 3 single regiments; alone they can hold a division worth of troops each.
If I withdraw them they will have limited value. They also keep a small window of opportunity open for our isolated division further to the north.
A small relief force will try to open a hex side for it to escape.

A behind the line tank regiment has now also moved to the west coast just south of Akyab. This combined with our division and troops in the north may reduce the flow of supplies to Allied troops. Can anyone confirm / repudiate this?

The next big question is to what degree we can manage to stabilize the front south of Prome.
I would really like to stall Andy for some time there!

I don't think I would commit any more reserves to Burma. It's '44 now and you're getting deeper into it. The allies have all the advantages; more power per squad, 4E's, and more reserves coming online. Putting more into Burma is falling into Andy's plan. He likes ground combat, his strength is in India, and he still has no Navy; so he has REALLY nothing else to do.

I'm with Fishbed. If you can come up with a low cost operation that would force Andy to react with greater forces, this would be a good time to do so.

Otherwise, you are simply in a trading space for time. With his 4E's, really no position can be held indefinitely irregardless of the terrain. [Personally, I thnk this is an area the game model still needs a tweak (higher fort levels, >6, should be almost immune to standard 500lb bombs), but that is for another thread.] That said, your current layered defense is what you need to do and keep doing for the next 2 years of game time. Start prepping your next 3 or 4 defense lines now and keep going. Gotta a lot of war left yet.

Don't get depressed over the withdrawals. That plays into Andy's hand. You're doing great. Just remember, he can't win like this, he can only progress. It's taking him more than a week to advance 40 miles. At that rate, he doesn't get to Singers until '45. That means the HI in '48.

That would put you somewhere near DECISIVE VICTORY or higher.
