I personally would've used a CL. Those ones are quite expendable.

Not a lot to say my units are starting to fall apart under the aerial bombardment - not to worried about it from my perspective but later in the game could cause major problems for a Japanese player

Apart from that when Mersing falls Singapore will be in trouble not much later

I sent 11th Indian Div to Mersing and they arrived in time to stop the Japanese advance.

So Mersing holds for now but the aerial barrage is fierce

Mini KB are south of Java heading for the gap between Timor and Java

Lexington and Enterprise are not far away so I have a decison to make but I may let mini KB pound on the Dutch and suffer some attrition before fighting.

The committment of 11th Indian Div to Mersing basically means I cannot hold my chosen defence line.

As The IJA gets closer to Malacca I will probably need to pull back to avoid being cut off but at least I have stalled the offensive at Mersing

OK unless PZB reinforces the Mersing attack has been held for now.

As both 8th and 22nd Bdes are now on the rail line to Singapore I will begin to pull out the other elements of 9th Div from the Mersing front in order to consolidate 9th Indian Div.

The attack on Rabaul started today but I didnt detect them so none of my bombers flew <mutter> I am now pulling out of Rabaul as I cannot hold it once he is ashore

AVG took a beating over Rangoon but is still in the fight.

Concentrating various B17 squadrons into Burma in case I get a chance to retaliate

MacArthur is going bunker on us and has run for bataan at full speed as i want the protection of the big guns..

Big KB has went missing - always a worry I need a sub screen north of Fiji I will need to begin pulling subs back to screen my bases to support my air search assets.

Closing in on New Year a couple of turns have passed.

OK what has happened.

1. Mini KB has turned back just as Lex's CAG gets brought up to strength - they didnt go after Java so my ambush was cancelled.

2. PZB is using paras to accelerate down the malay peninsula and is landing more troops at Mersing.

Mersing is losing its usefullness once his forces link up I will be cut off I have ordered a fighting withdrawal out of Mersing by III Corps - moving in Combat mode and slowly should ensure I dont get bounced out.

3. Air Combat over Rangoon has been brutal and I have temporarily conceded air superiority I will be back but will wait a few days to repair my tattered squadrons.

4. The first of my real reinforcements has arrive 232 Sqn with 16 Hurricanes at Aden and 7th Hussars Armoured Regt.

5. I am now in full retreat across the map III Corps will join the rest of Malaya Army in Singapore and MacArthur is heading for Bataan - both are about a week earlier than I would have liked but so be it.

6. In Burma I now have 5 Indian Bdes and the full 1st Burma Div added to that Chinese Divisons are in Burma and resting given enough time they will become stronger. At present each Division is little stronger than a British Inf Bn.

3 more Combat Divisions and the reserve Div of the Chinese 5th Army are en route to Burma but it is unlikely they will arrive in sufficient strength to achieve much.

7. The first wave of reinforcing units is arriving in the South pacific - The focus of the reinforcements is Pago Pago, Suva, Tahiti and New Zealand - Over time each of these locations will get stronger

USS Hornet has arrived as well which gives me four fleet carriers

What has become 100% clear to me is that Bn sized forces hadve no place in the fighting - they are there for rear area garrisons but are of little combat utility as after one fight they ttend to be shattered.

Unfortunately I have lots of these Bns but few larger formations.

I need properly constituded, organised, trained, well led Divisions not hordes of disorganised Bns - this fragmentation of my fighting power is one of the main difficulties in resisting the japanese advance and reflects the lack of teamwork and cohesion in allied forces.

Andy, I think the top two issues for the Allied Leadership are the experience differential and generally low morale. When combined with Japanese air superiority, any Allied defense is a house of cards. A couple of days of sustained air attacks followed by a shock attack, and out come the white scarves.

I have stopped worrying about what target a unit is prepped for until I get it trained up to its national limit. If a unit starts with 100 prep points for Las Vegas, it is going to stay prepped for Las Vegas, even if headed towards the front, until its experience reaches 60 in my man's Army! I would rather have the general increase to experience than the site specific prep advantage, particularily during the fluid first six months of the war. If a unit is under 100 prep points and on the front line, I will generally leave it in combat mode (if it has engineers) to help prepare defenses, unless its morale is low (<50) to begin with--in which case it gets R&R.

I rebuild as many of the brigades as I can, but a few decent BNs make good rear area airfield security forces. A good BN reinforcing a base force is a tough nut for an IJA Airborne unit to crack.

Yeah I am digging in for all I am worht in various locations and I agree dont change prep points.

PZB is giving me some free training at mersing and my orderly withdrawal continues I estimate 6 or 7 days before I can get out of th eMersing hex (the cost of a slow withdrawal with no risks) it takes a long time to perform a tactical retreat.

I am keeping weather eye on how long it takes him to push his spearhead forward in case I need to expedite my pull out.

Thank god for the Canandians is all I say those Flower class corvettes are worth their weight in gold

I expect Singapore to fall about Mid January - you could add a week to that without the the Mersing Gambit

If I get bounced out of Mersing maybe take a week off of that estimate.

Without the extra 5 Bdes that historically were sent to Malaya its hard to see the defences holding the Japanese out to long

Well so far the RCN has covered itself in glory

Prince Robert and the two Corvettes seeing off that Japanese Heavy ruiser and then the other corvettes doing everything they can to keep PH safe.

I may transfer a few more and a few RN DD's from India to West Coast to beef up my Support Groups

Last game I was able to do ok v IJN subs this game they are running rampant and I will need to adjust.

At PM I now have a reinforced Division digging in. (The Birds) 30th Aus Bde and PM Bde plus a couple of attached units.

More will follow when I have time.

Between North and West Australia I now have 4 USAAF Heavy Bomber Sqns in theatre and training or searching plus one medium Sqn of Marauders so so far so good.

Still desperately short of fighters in Oz I have exactly 19 Buffalos spread across 2 RAF Sqns at present but the USAAF and RAAF Sqns will start to arrive in numbers soon I hope

The real question I am grappling with is where will PZB exploit all have pluses and minuses??

1. PM - I expect a serious attack on PM at some stage
2. New Cal - I expect him to take New Cal whether he will try to hold it not sure as its exposed
3. Fiji - Maybe but he would need a lot of force and its a long way.
4. CENTPAC islands - As a raid I would be suprised if he didnt
5. North Aus - Half expecting this one
6. West Aus - Again half expecting this one
7. East Aus - na dont really see this one to much firepower
8. India - again its weak but I am ready for it so I doubt he will try it
9. Ceylon - maybe
10. Hawaii - na hes to smart for that one
11. NZ - maybe

1. PM - If he is serious he can probably take it but I ntend to make sure that he has tp mean it and it wont be a short fight - I will have between 1 and 2 Divs plus CD units AA and other forces dug in and waiting he may be able to take it but it will hurt.

2. New Cal - New Cal as a raid has real possibilities he knows I am not rushing troops in there from KB's flyby so I would assume he knows its weak but unless you are going all out for Fiji or New Zealand its not worth trying to hold. So a raid yes to keep me off balance but if he commits large forces there I know he is actually going for NZ or Fiji.

So lets deal with them

3. Fiji - I only have a reinforced Bde there so if he wants it enough he can probably take it now but Pago Paho is strongly held and so is tahiti so I dont know maybe - within a month I will have a full Div on Fiji at which point it becomes harder - still doable but harder.

11. NZ - I dont see it I have c 2 Divs there already plus plentifull armour with more to come and its a long way south so Fuel would be a real bugger and I would fight for NZ tooth and nail so it would be at a long LOC and I have enough in place even now to fight it out - I could be wrong but NZ feels like a sep to far - I will honour the threat though and have already sent 8th Marine Regt there on board QE plus recombined all my NZ Bdes which are resting and recovering strength.

4. CENTPAC islands Canton yes, others maybe taking somewhere like Palmyra or Johnstone or Midway - yes why not but dont expect to hang on to them they are all to close to PH for long occupation - maybe as a strategy to draw me out but I doubt he would push it.

None of them can take a decent garrison and between Subs and LR Bombers I can stop him cold. So yes as a raid to be a PITA but not as anythong long term - probably more of a trap for me

North and West Australia - its probably where I would go North Australia is weak especially now and could be taken and its hard to recapture - not as difficult as stock but still hard - Darwin gives the SRA some strategic depth and is a real possibility because I cannot afford to reinforce to the level required to stop and attack and its close to his fuel reserves.

West Australia slightly further but same basic logic I am weak (c 2 bdes) and I cannot commit large forces to defeat him on thebeaches which means he gets ashore.

Still reasonably close to his fuel reserves.

South and East Australia - I hope he does try it. I am keeping most of the armour and good infantry in these regions its where my fixed aviation support is - its where I have good internal LOC's please try it - pretty please :)

India a raid maybe but I dont think total conquest is possible or practical it would leave him to exposed everywhere else.

So my initial view is no but you never know

Ceylon on the other hand has real possibilities its cut off my garriosn is not to strong (1 Div at present) it have 3 or 4 potential landing spots so yes that one is a maybe

As we are playing Scen 2 the key determinant will be where he commits 21st Army thats the extra force the japanese get in this scenario thats the forces he can afford to lose on an expedition without hurting his defence....

OK last day of the year and I have mistimed it at Mersing he has reinforced quicker than I can deal with it and the disruptuion levels and fatigue of my main combat units is such that when the inevitable shock attack goes in tomorrow I will be retreated nothing I can do about it - irritating but not a lot else I can say

The airborne artillery and his ability to reinforce at will because of my subs in ability to interdict has cost me dearly.

I underestimated the speed with which he could assemble 20,000 men into Mersing

p.s. 1st of Jan 42 so at least I didnt lose Malaya in December 41 !!!

MacArthur is now in his bunker on Bataan with 1800 AV so it should take a while to get them out of there.

Percival is in deep do do and is about to get 2 Divisions retreated out of mersing.

Andy;

PzB will always look to outflank and attack the weakest point. I know I am preaching to the converted, but to hell with Mersing. Malaya is always doomed, you can only look to give yourself an extra day here or there. your plight may be to my benefit, but I doubt it. John and I have started down the road again, so I am reinforcing Mersing (honestly you just don't have the troops). This time I know you wont be picking up the pieces, but, I am watching and learning a master of the allied OOB fight a master of the 'Jab bash'. I hope to learn alot.

Yeah but I let him I am only really annoyed about my underestimation of the speed he can reinforce.

It takes so long to get forces like 22nd and 8th Indian Bdes onto the rail net that determines how long you fight anywhere outside of Singapore.

The main thing that has suprised me Effectiveness of his air force from high up in disrupting my army.

Tips I would give to anyone fighting in malaya

Leave no base ungarrisoned thats on the rail line - the Malay and ISF Bns are pretty much useless in a stand up fight but they can stop paratroopers from landing and taking bases away from you. You need to make your opponeent march his force down the west coast.

Do not fight in the air for Singapore until you have to - if you sense an attritional air fight coming run away UNTIL you need to fight.

Had I not gotrten my air force shredded pre Mersing I would have given PZB a nasty time over the Mersing Landing as it was only the Vildebeestes were combat ready and a great job they did as well but it wasnt enough.

I should have pulled out earlier but been ready to come back when the decisive moment loomed.

Mine Mersing as heavily as you can

Dont get POW and Re[pulse trashed keeping them as a viable threat will make him think twice about Mersing.

The reality is this will cost me Singapore maybe a week early so its not a disaster just irritating

Tell you what though PZB learns quick - I thought he was going to take forever to get to Singapore - this does feel like a frustrated end run that he has gotten away with because I trashed my AF

Every allied player needs to learn to watch for Para detachments capturing rail line bases - DO NOT LEAVE ANY UNGUARDED.

Also leving LCU's on the rail line in non base hexes stops strategic mode and forces him to clear them use these tricks keep him off the railway as long as you can.

I basically committed to the immolating Air Battle over Malaya before I needed to ..... that was my fundamental mistake - with no ships in port and me not planning on fighting for Singapore i didnt need to waste my AF there as early as I did.

Right another discussioon PP's

I face the perennial allied players quandry.

PB5Y's have the range to carry troops and evac them a long way....

But my PP's are short.

I can either free up green but combat ready forces for th esouth pacific and PM or I can spend them rescuing fragments from Bataan and malaya......

Not a nice choice to have to make....

At the moment I am mixing and matching.

I used PP's to pull out the Loyal Bn and the Punjab Bn from Malaya because thats a good set of replacements I can use when disbanded to help bring other units up to strength.

When the end is in site I will do a mass evac of Singapore to pull out everything I can but it will be the square root of nothing probably

Until then I am saving for 27th and 40th US Divs as I need them is SWPAC area ASAP...

Starting to detest subs need to get a few more flush deckers converted to APD's

An RN Care package is en route in the shape of 4 RN DD's which will lead USN ASW flotillas.

A drastic step but looks like the only way

main things today were no shocjk attack at Mersing which will allow at least 12th Indian Bde and 3rd Cav to get out of the hex before being retreated - he should have bounced me right out to stop me running.

If he doesnt attack tomorrow I may get most of my force out intact.

This would be a real bonus.

All I need is another 24 hours and my troops will be back and running for Johore /Singapore.

At malacca he tried to take it agin by coup de main but my policy of leaving no base uncovered paid fruit again he will have to either wait for follow forces to kick my unit out or de train at Kuala Lumper and march down the road - either way it buys me time and thats all I can ask for.

AVG is now back at rangoon and ready so lets see what happens

Castor obviously I was lying in your AAR apologies but a little false intel never hurts

The true numbers

are level 2 forts and about 300 AV in three weak Bdes at PM for now

PM Bde is almost concentrated
30th Bde is there in full strenght
The three Bird Bns are there
and a single NZ Bn

So basically a weak Division at preesent.

I am almost ready to ship in 3rd motor bde and 8th Marine Regt (offloading at Aukland at present from QE

Additionally I am sending the CD Regt from Sydney so forces are rising but are not yet as strong as I intimated in your AAR .....

lol and the last five minutes I was going through an older turn looking around at what I could have brought there this early to really get it to 500av and your high fort level until I realized that I wouldn�t have been able to do so... I would have needed another two weeks to really bring substantial force there but KB and the invasion showed up. If KB is coming around then it can wreck a ground unit with one or two ground strikes so IMO a determined Japanese player can take out everything up to 400 av "easily". Only with 600 av I would feel more or less save but then I would think that if the IJN can move in one division, why not moving in another one?

In WITP I�ve always thought PM would be a death trap for the Allied (and in all my Japanese games it definetely was), no matter what the Allied brought there. The more the better for me as the Japanese. With my inexperience in AE (well, who really is experienced with AE yet?

) I thought it would be doable but I guess there�s not much difference from the deathtrap it was in WITP.

I will be up to lvl 4 forts 500 mines and 900 AV within a month the question is will I get a month

If I get a month then I would think its 60:40 that I can hold as he would need to pull in 6 Divs to win
