Why is there not a historical basis for the long lance torpedo as an effective weapon?

It was a fast, long range, and deadly torpedo, that surpassed in terms of capability most Allied torpedoes.

Although later on there would be some countermeasures developed against torpedoes, I do not believe there would have been enough effective ones in place even later in WWII. In a confused night action, torpedoes were often deadly.

If the Japanese player is in a better position than the Japanese historically were, and are more able to use their torpedo assets later in the war, well then that's part of the game.

Admittedly, the production of torpedoes in RL was more limited than is modeled in the game, but that said, this is a game where changing production schedules is allowed.

Oh John is very good no question.

My next step will be a full court invasion of Timor I have multiple Divs ready but I need to re organise send my cripples home and sort it out

Main conclusion is I need to dedicate more of my modern CA's to SCTF's leave my Battleships at home but that means lightening the AA protection of my cvarriers

Reality is there are ways to adjust I just need to use them

1. use a lot more PT Boats to fight it out with his small TF's (I was being carefull not to overuse them but in Warangai and environs its perfect locations for them)
2. Free up more modern Fletcher and Clevelend class ships for small HK SCTF's maybe even a couple of Baltimores stop using BB's in the role of escorts

Its irritating but I will need to weaken my Carrier Screens to deal with it

Mines, SS, night attacks, SCTF of just one ship ( CLs with agressive captains?? ), and, of course, SWARMS of pt-boats....

4 ship SCTFs of Fletchers with good captains and a good TF leader are very very effective against anything he sends at you other than his heavy cruisers. The 5" upgraded naval rifles with radar have great penetration and will knock hell out of CA Aoba class ships and less, they are very fast and able to dodge the worst of the long lances. They have functioning torps now themselves against the BBs in bombardment runs. And they are very hard to hit during the day by his naval bombers.
They will soak up torp salvos before they get to the targets.
The only targets they can't handle that way are the heavy cruisers - above Aoba. These are nimble, very experienced and very hard hitting. I found they could put too many 8 inch rounds on the DDs and even the advanced 5" round still bounced.

Locate them in the slots down which he advances to attack you beachheads. Use 2 TFs of 4 DDs and 2 of PTs on each of these egresses with patrol orders and 2-3 hex react orders. That way he is lit up when he gets to Waingapoe and your less nimble but heavier hitters can make up for their lack of training. They may also turn some of the TFs around due to lack of ammo or damage, such that those that battle through are not able to fight for long and there aren't as many waves.

I also find 4 ships DD TFs very good as naval bomber targets in a 'spread out the weight' role. There is no doubt you'll lose quite a number, but they are very nimble agianst torpedo attacks, which are his best weapon. His divebombers are the problem with this tactic - but still definately worth it to stop him targetting your main invasion, bombardment and carrier fleets. Remember also to use follow orders of these little TFs by the bigger ones so that the small TFs are likely to be hit first.

Last couple of days have been interesting

KB steamed out and sunk some Transports mostly cripples I thought about going after them but decided not to.

In general I need to rearm and requip my carriers

I have about 30 PT boats operating at Warangai now no bombardment in last two days and the base is fully open and up and running.

I have lots of P38's in Australia but 2 engines and horrible service rating means I need to keep them back.

P51A's and other small production run aircraft are starting to arrive - very limited usefullness aircraft must have pool density to be used as anything other than one shot weapons.

I lost about 25 aircradft yesterday when LR P38's and Heavies tried to bomb memboro.

Forts on Warangai are climing nicely at present fort lvl 3 (50%) bad terrain plenty of supply full prepped and 1800 AV I am feeling reasonably secure

Trying to reduce the number of damaged aircraft on Warangai I want to rotate a couple of sqns back to Australia rest take on new pilots and aircraft and be ready to fly in after the next nuke bombardment.

Next ops will be against Timor

Darwin is now up to 20k supply so I am hoping I will shortly be comfortable on that side as well which will really start to open up possibilities

OK PZB came back and nuked Warangai again. Not to bothered be destroyed about 90 aircraft but they are all sustainable types mostly P40's - I am using P40's because they are expendable....

He had to fight through many PT Boats but the achieved nothing.

I have decided to take 12 Fletcher class Destroyers and 4 Light Cruisers (3 x Royal Navy and the Pheonix) ie mostly Torpedo armed ships - given them my best captains and Admirals and formed then into 4 small flotillas these will move to Warangai to support the PT Boats and Submarines.

These groups will be hard to hit and the Royal Navy Cruisers have very high night exp and the Fletchers the nasty nasty 5" guns.

Next time the Jap DD Group comes calling they should meet a nasty reaction.

I estimate 5 days before the supply will be unloaded at Darwin and the next wave is loaded and ready to go.

Operations are also underway in other theatres while PZB is focused on Timor
With Darwin now fully operational the Divisions there are getting ready for next operation

Interesting that you use your best ships for CV TFs. I do the exact opposite. I want my New Orleans CAs and Fletcher DDs in surface combat. For CVs I use Portlands, Northhamptons, Pensocolas, Mahans, Sims, and a couple of other DDs I can't remember right now. I have found 2 New Orleans and 4 Fletchers to be a very good surface combat TF when you put a good TF commander in charge and good ship commanders.

Yup well my approach didnt work so it sounds like you are right.

Mu problem is using inferior ships has cost me well no more next time I go in these little 1 - 6 DD TF's PZB likes will run into ots of allied version of the same

Now that's what I'm talkin' about! Fire with Fire - Allied Admirals are behing you sir (especially those that know what it's like to be on the receiving end of a PzB blitz) - 'salutes'

Yeppers, been beat on by PzB for many years( since UV days ). Another SCTF that works for me is one Brooklyn CL and 2 or 3 Fletcher DDs. A Brooklyns guns will take out all Japanese CLs and most CAs. I have found that small SCTFs are the way to go, I like to keep mine to a max of 8 ships.

The single biggest issue I have in game is me

I am not a detail freak if a turn takes more than 30 minutes summit is wrong I dont want to manage ship captains, pilots in sqns etc etc I used autoconvoy a lot in WITP I want to use it in AE because I dont want to mess about with rear area convoys so when it doesnt work I create mega convoys to minimise the work on me and sure enough a raider hits it and half of them collide

Its just not my thing dont get me wrong same on land stuff - I take a base force I expect it to have a radar set I dont bother checking it get to the end discover its a weiord US one with no radar etc etc

Basically AE is a very different beast that WITP

Joe said to me once that the burden on a player in AE as the allies is broadly equivalent to the Japanese in WITP I now believe him.

I am not and never will be a detail freak and AE forces you to be one which is part of the reason PZB keeps findiong chinks in my armour.

e.g. Pilot trainign fro the 1st 6 months I ignored it expecting my pilots to arrive trained at normal level and able to hit the broad side of a barn and be competative - it took me 6 months to figure out I HAD to play the pilot training sub game to be marginally competative

I am playing allies for gawd sake micro manage pilots thats for the Japanese detail freaks not me....

So part of the challenge for me is to try and play the game in such a way that the detail doesnt freak me out but remain competative

defacto most of its my own fault I was one of the designers and didnt realise just what we had done to the complexity levels

I kinda had a handle on it from the land side but the air side especially is now so nuanced thats its hard to keep up.

Anyway PZB came back today at Warangai and nuked it again before my flotillas were in position

2 days in a row its been nuked and its stilll open....

Darwin is now fully operational so my 2nd 100+ Heavy Bomb Group has moved in that gives me 100+ 4E at port Hedland and the same at Darwin - when I hit Timor I will at least be well supported.

Generally things are going ok at present I would like a few more destroyers in theatre and a few less cripples but in general I am in good shape

Next wave will start loading in about 3 or 4 days

There are also about 150 Mediums at Broome/Derby and about 200 land based SBD's and TBF's floating around as well as strong P38 Fighter Sqns

P38's have such a lousy sevice rating that I am not committing them to Warangai

I also have several P47 Sqns reapairing replacement aircraft and a few P40/P36/P51A/P39 Sqns also repairing aircraft and getting ready to rotate into Warangai

My next invasion will be a mutli Divisional landing on Timor

What are you doing to prevent him from nuking Darwin? What naval protection do you have in place? You know that he loves to nuke 4Es.

Well the first of my small groups arrived on station last night and even with the best admirals and captains got their arses kicked

PT Boats not getting it done either they are just targets no real threat

Fortuantely the AF remained open and cost Japan over 100 aircraft but naval was a defeat Pheonix Gp is going in tomorrow

Andy - don't forget, you are one of the Devs, and it was you Devs ( as a team ) who changed the air model between WitP and AE...

I lost less than 10 aircraft...

PZB lost 200

But i am the one with my carriers up **** creek and my invasion of Koepang now a non starter.

Warangai is lost no way I will be able to hold this is a disaster.

3 Fleet Carriers are crippled, 2 will sink,

Warspite is down, 2 CVE's sunk and 4 other crippled.

And I retaliate with sweet FA.

I cannot even bring myself to do the right thing and abandon my cripples - I shoudl but I wont and cant wrng decision but I am so pissed now .....

Despite my aircraft ranging to 10 - Hellcats, Avengers and SBD's are restricted to max 7 hex range

japan gets to hits to 8 anyone who says this game is an AFB's wet dream has never played it.

Really really pissed off at present.

The whole CAP was a complete fiasco achieving absolutely nothing.

Guys in case my bitterness gets in the way just for the avoidance of doubt this whole campaign has been a supreme achievement by PZB yes I made a lot of mistakes (to many) and yes I have been unlucky but don't anyone think that John has not played an exceptional game he has been outstanding and rightly deserves what he has achieved.

He has beat me up three times in a row and this is by far the most decisive he is an exceptional player and I have failed to make the transition from defence to attack and he has spanked me left right and centre even when I cantch him by surprise.
