Was there a recent naval battle? PzB seems to make some mention of one recently but I don't see it reflected in your AAR here. I'm wondering are you out of synch or did you feel the results weren't significant or what?

A few days ago PZB hit a convoy off of Ramree after it had unloaded I ordered it to run and it didnt and I lost about 20 transports (the two SCTF's guarding the port did depart to Akyab their home base... and a third failed to intercept the Jap TF)

The CAP on the port for fogged in and bombers got through and claimed another 4 transports overall a bad mix of results but not really a major issue

Not happy about it but not really a major incident other than mechanics screwing up but cest la vie thats the game

25 ships here, 25 ships there and pretty soon you are 200 ships short of what you need for your invasion TF.

I take what you say about the Allied super-abundance though. If you were playing as Japan though 3 or 4 losses like that would cripple your entire war effort.

its not an issue because I more or less done with amphib ops in SEAC for a while

(In some ways its stops me from getting frisky to early so it may turn out to be a good thing !!)

The real theatres requiring amphibs are SWPAC and CENTPAC

Sorry, but I think that's a wrong point of view : Allied have massive advantage of material, but losing them without achieving anything is a defeat. If u lose 20 xAKs invading P.M. or Port Blair is good, losing them at Rangoon is not a good thing.

Just my two cents

Sorry to be clear I dont think its good either but its not a major defeat in the grand scheme of things which is why I didnt raise it earlier.

PZB managed (to late) to get a sizeable cruiser force into range of my convoys off of Ramree island - a wasted and risky effort that cost him 2 Battleships less than 3 months ago when it would have mattered.

I lost a few LST's, APA's and lots of xAk's totalling c 25 ships.

I spotted the cruiser force but had a major troop convoy coming round Colombo so most of my heavy assets including Queen Elisabeth and Renown were covering that TF and my DB Sqns and TB bombers were doing the same.

The convoy at Ramree Island was ordered to stop loading and get underway just in case and 3 Destroyer TF's ordered to patrol in Ramree Island

A CAP of P39D's and Warhawks was ordered

Now PZB ignored the valuable troop convoy - GOOD
Hit Ramree - waste of time and bad risk as the transports had unloaded all but a fraction of the supply and a few mot support
For some reason which I am putting down to **** happens the TF didnt leave port and the destroyers all failed to intercept the japanese cruisers no point in whinging about it - its war sometimes things dont work out as planned
Lastly my CAP was grounded and his naval stike got a free hack.

I am not happy about it but nor do I think its anything I can do about it - PZB pulled off yet another risky surface raid against an IRRELEVANT target after the campaign was over - personally I hope he keeps doing it so far its the only time I have won at sea is when he takes these insane risks with his limited assets -this one was especially pointless because the campagn was already over and Ramree's importance has faded.

Remember he did this ealry in the war v Colmbo and lost 3 BB's
He did it again near PH and lost 2 Carriers
He did it a 3rd time (when it actually mattered) off of Ramree and lost a BB
This is the 4th time and he got away with it - Bravo

I have made my own well documented mistakes at sea in this game but this one doesnt even register

PZB abandoned Pegu not a aurprise and has pulled back towards Moulmien the only question - will he pull al the way back or try to stand between the rivers.

I dont really care to much as my next steps in this theatre are mostly about resting and reorganising my troops

I have decided in the interim not to send any fresh Divs to Burma they are better off in India forming a new Corps ready for an Amphib op v Andaman Islands

Port Moresby now operational SBD's and fighters going to hit anything that moves for the next few days.

The sweeps continue at Rangoon I will make him pay in a few days for now I will tolerate this

The 3rd Commando Bde pushed the Japanese tank regt out of the way - The reorganisation continues more and more of my best aircraft are moving to SWPAC this will give me the strength to push through - I need to be carefull to watch out for KB but I have a plan to deal with that and being brutal I am willing to take heavy losses in DB and Mediums to get a few bombs into KB's flight decks - I want PZB to come tangle with my LBA the more the merrier

been taking a long look around in Burma

XXXIII Corps HQ is 100% prepped for Sabang
XV Corps is about 50% for Port Blair
IV Corps 100% for Rangoon
Burma Corps 100% for Mandalay
III Corps 100% for Darwin

I need to perform some reorganisation which will cost a few PP's

Initial thoughts
2nd, 18th British and 14th Indian are all 100% prepped for Port Blair - now of these 18th B rit is in poor shape having taken heavy casualties in North Burma, 2nd British is at about 90% and also in need of some R&R after speaheading IV Corps

14th Indian Div is in good shape at 98%

I will be going through and looking long and hard at all dispositiions

But in general
Inf Bdes and Bns will go to Burma Corps which will operate in conjunction with NCAC Chinese in securing North Burma (It goes beyond my historical credibility to use Chinese Units for Amphib Ops) personal choice but it feels wrong so having taken Rangoon they will be reverting to predominantly Defensive duties ont he flanks. I have no real issue in using them further south but not for amphiob ops.

IV Corps will secure the Moulmien front

The others will rest and re tain for amohib ops but its not my intention (other than Andamabn Islands) to undertake any further major amphib op in 44 in Burma

PzB won't hesitate to go back on the offensive, if he sees an opportunity, so don't pull out too many troops (too soon).

I'm always impressed with the careful control of your Corps and Divisions. I used to forget what division was "atached" to what corps !!!

It is the only way I can keep my sanity I wish I had the PP's to make them all line up nice an neatly

I have a spreadsheet and I try to line them up as best I can.

As the allies you get so many units that you need to be constantly going up in levels.

Arguably

1941 - 6/42 Bns, Regts and Bdes are the main LCU's with Divs rare
6/42 - 12/43 Bdes and Divs are the main LCU's
12/43+ you need to be thinking in terms of Corps everywhere except CENTPAC

I go through and allocate units to Corps notionally - each Corps prepares for 1 - 2 objectives (no more) and is designed to defeat 1 reinforced Japanese Div in bad terrain with 6 forts quickly.

By designing that way I know I can pretty much take any likely opposition at anything short of a major base

At present I am reorganising to allow my strongest units to get ready for the next phase but within a month the focus of thegame will shift decisvely eastwards and southwards there will be a couple of weeks of phony war as I prepare and re organise and wait for enough P47N25's to arrive (175 per month woohooo !!!!) not to mention P38J's etc etc I am coming for PZB and coming hard but not until I have enough units.

The next strike will be in CENTPAC when 6th Army hits the line Islands backed by the first operational Superforts on airfield suppression freeing up my carriers so they don't need to pull double duty.

Andy

P47N25's

You are going to get P47D-25's not the N variation. You have to wait a year for that plane. Also, while you get 175 a month, you only get them for 6 months. Then a dry spell until the P47N arrives. The P47D-25 is a good plane and practically unbeatable with pilots of >80 EXP.

Having seen PZB kick the crap out of my armoured cars and tanks and given the presence of massed tanks in Burma I have decided to re organise my armour into Divisions which will operate together rather than Indpt Bde and Regt Groups

The new Org chart is as follows

Next time the Japanese punch accross a river I will be waiting....

2nd Indian Armoured Div (attached to 14th Army)
Div Recce (3rd Cavalry Regt)
50th Tank Bde
267th Armoured Bde
268th Motorised Bde

This force will assemble at Bassein to train and take on replacements ASAP.

III Indian (Armoured) Corps will reorganise along similar lines.

9th British Armoured Div - Perth
Div Recce (16th Light Cav Regt)
7th Armoured Bde
73rd Indian Motorised Bde
254th Armoured Bde
150th RAC Regt (attached)

A further 2 Divs (1st and 3rd Australian Armoured will be formed from Australian Motorised bdes and indpt regts.

If I can get all 4 Divs into the same place at the same time it should make a mighty shock point

Been planning my next move and revisiting the strategic plan took a long time doing my last turn

The basic plan was to draw forces into Burma and the die. While crippling his economy then delivering a major attack through cent pac

Howevert eh failure of the southern prong and heavy fleet losses have forced me to reconsider

The Burma strategy has succeeded but I could easily break my army against moulmien what I am going to call the Hirohito line with two forced shock attacks cross river with limited flanking opportunities would be a nasty fight

Even if I win my army will be in tatters

Anyway I have a total of 6 corps of troops available

This ex ides Chinese troops and bur corps which will be tasked with defence

XXXIII corps
XV corps
III armoured corps
IV corps
V amphib corps
And a 6th corps with no hq

The plan as such is to use IV and XV corps to sit and eventually. When I assemble a massive artillery Air weapon to try and break through but not get broken. In the proces

All other corps will prepare for various amphib attacks but these will not be launched until and if kb is neutralised

The southern prong will either go east or west of ng still being debated

The real attack remains cent pac but I want to draw more forces east and keep strengthening my. Fleet

I want all fleet carriers to be using F4u1as as I have not been impressed with f6f so far

OK planning SWPAC & SOPAC

7th Army Group is taking over command of operations in SWPAC with 2 Armies under command

6th US Army with 2 Corps and 9 Divisions under command will operate out of Darwin and NE Australia in the direction of Sorong/Ambon so a NE thrust into the DEI

1st Australian Army with 2 Corps under command with 11 Divs will drive out of PM trying to secure Solomons and NG also eventually driving towards Sorong and Ambon

A 5th Indpt Corps consisting of about 9 Bde sized groups will slowly creep forward in Solomons and SOPAC (no risks to ba taken as this is also the garrison force for Fiji/New Cal and New Zealand)

in CBI I have about 38 Divisional Equivalents

3 in India
1 in Ceylon
6 committed to holding Burma

That leaves about 28 Divisions or equivalents for offensive operations

V Amphib Corps (4 Divs) - prepping for Sumatra
XXXIII Corps (6 Divs) - Prpping for Andaman Islands
XV Corps (5 Divs) - Prepping for Java
III Corps (3 Armoured Divs) - Prepping for Sumatra

14th Army (Moulmien Front)
IV Corps (5 Divs)
BurCorps (4 Divs)

P47N25's

You are going to get P47D-25's not the N variation. You have to wait a year for that plane. Also, while you get 175 a month, you only get them for 6 months. Then a dry spell until the P47N arrives. The P47D-25 is a good plane and practically unbeatable with pilots of >80 EXP.

Actually four months not six (3/44 to 6/44). Which suggests that the Allied player needs to manage them carefully. In the north Atlantic the Allies had to deal with the air cover gap. In AE the Allied player needs to worry about the P47 gap when they go out of production in July of 44 and don't come back for a very long time. This is somewhat mitigated by a slew of Mustangs and Corsairs that appear late in the year but there is a gap where Allied fighter production takes a big hit due to the P47 going off line. You will get 700 of them plus another 150 or so in new squadrons but that is it. It will be hard to resist not burning through them.

Andy, just two comments. If you take Java (Sabang) then the Adaman Islands are not necessary. You can just let him keep it. Sabang is the key as it closes the Indian Ocean to Japan.

If Japan holds Singapore and has a lot of airbases (and he will) then you are going to need a lot more than five divisions in Java as it can easily be reinforced and pin a lot of your troops down. I would advise just taking Sabang along with a few supporting Islands and not worrying about the rest. You can bomb the oil in Medan from Sabang but are really too far to get at his oil in Palembang.

I think it is better to seize the Islands off of Java and just use them to bomb oil facilities. Siboret, Batoe Island and a few others. The islands will support large airfields and are hard for him to take back. However, if you go ashore on the mainland in Java then he really has interior lines and unless you pour lots of troops into Java(and hold total air superiority) you will probably face a massive counter stroke. Based on my own game, it is better to just seize the islands, build airbases and then kill his oil fields. Once that is done there is no real reason to go ashore in Java at all, and no real reason for him to try to defend it.

The above is based on my own experiences.

I agree been looking at it pretty carefully as my burn rate was high of the P47D2

Basically I onbly have enough to equip 3 Sqns with limited reserves

In CBI its not to bad as the bulk of the fighting is over for a while

So 3 Sqns of USAAF P47D2s is probably enough as I can back with the RAF Spit VIII's (32 per month) and Thud I's from May (40 per month)

I will need to use up my P40 and P39 stocks for rear area security and training but I can probably cope ok in that theatr

SWPAC will get all the D25's and the RAAF Spit VIII's and P38J's and L's but it could get tight at the turn of the year

The F4U1A and D will equip all my carriers hopefully freeing up all the Hellcats for UMSC sqns (I have lots of Hellcats in pool at present)

Andy

My big problem

Fascinating that the RNZAF gets F4U1D's before the USN :) I assume the model is a proxy for all the F4U's NZ ended up with

I have more or less decided not to commit the D25 piecemeal I need to minimise losses so I am holding them back and giving the sqns equipped with them the best pilots I can find I will not be committing them anywhere in less than 3 Sqn "Wing" sized forces to try and make sure they have numbers on their side 4 Sqns are currenlty repairing in Australia and will be committed when ready

I think so. Once again, the navy's objections to the corsair as a carrier aircraft made a lot of NZ and Marine pilots very happy.
